How has your summer been so far? We hope you’ve carved out time to enjoy the activities and people that bring you joy. To spend quality time with family and friends. To hike, bike, read, camp, raft, golf, eat good food and maybe even listen to some great live music. Have you made memories or are you realizing that summer 2022 is quickly slipping away without much to show for it? Whatever your situation, summer isn’t over yet and we have some pretty terrific ideas for August. We give you the scoop on the nation’s only lemonade tap room, explain how a local dog trainer got his start and introduce you to a mobile veterinarian. We offer some ideas from a custom landscaper on how to make the most of your outdoor living space and give you a sneak peak into a Colorado-based company making portable campfires that can be used even during most fire bans. We discuss the local farmers' market scene and introduce you to an artisan who crafts gorgeous horsehair pottery. We have story about a local program that pairs kids in need with bicycles that need a home. And… for those of you who haven’t wandered around Colorado Springs’ far north corridors lately, we explain why you might want to visit this fast-growing area for some serious entertainment. Summer will set before we know it. Get out and make some memories!

LavaBox: The Safer Way To Enjoy a Fire
16
M UST SE E | SPORTS + R ECRE ATI ON
The LavaBox was born on the river. During forest fire season in the heart of the Rockies, a group of raft guides and kayakers got together for one of the last trips of the year. While trying out a “portable” backyard fire pit, someone joked about putting the behemoth on a raft. Everyone laughed—but it sparked an idea. What if you could put a fire inside the most used piece of gear on the boat: the humble ammo can? Raft guides need rugged tools and ammo cans find their way on rafts (and battlefields) for this reason. “They are so tough you can light them on fire… so we did!” said LavaBox founder and chief eruption officer, Josh Thurmond. “The rest is warm—and safe—history.”
AMMO CANS ARE COOL! It’s simple. The LavaBox is a portable campfire that lives in an ammo box and runs off propane, just like a grill at home. No smoke. No firewood. No charcoal. No ashes. No sweat. Why ammo cans? “We chose ammo cans for a bunch of good reasons!” Thurmond said. “First, they are ultra-tough. We are hardcore outdoor people and we like tough things. Also, they are steel. Steel will eventually go back to the earth so we wanted to choose something that would recycle at some point. Second, they are super portable. They are far easier to pack than those round pits. They fit anywhere, really. Plus, they have a lid so you can just close up the mess and pack it away. Third, they are iconic! They are one of the most recognizable pieces of gear out there. The cool factor is very high!” Plus, they’re mostly water tight. A bit of water may leak in at the valve holes, but they’ll float. “You’ll have enough time to recover it if you flip your boat, but save the beers first,” the website indicates. Noted.
CAMPFIRES EVEN DURING FIRE BANS In the last decade, the Pikes Peak region has suffered the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires. Dozens more
wildfires have devasted other areas of beautiful state during that time. Let’s face it–Colorado tends to be a bit of a tinderbox. But Coloradoans tend to be outdoorsy. Campers. Hikers. Anglers. Climbers. Rafters. Backyard grillers. Fire pit aficionados. Building-s’mores-over-a-smoldering-campfire types. Fire bans put a firm crimp in that outdoorsy lifestyle. Enter LavaBox, the portable campfire allowed even during most fire bans. From the simple Naked Tabletop Vol-CAN-no to the Krakatoa FireBreather, these ammo cans bring the fun.
HOT, HOT, HOT Denver-based LavaBox launched in 2020 and has grown exponentially since then. “Our growth has been tremendous!” Thurmond said. “We have grown over 1000% for the last two years and there are no signs of slowing down any time soon. We will be releasing more amazing products in 2023!” The closest retail location at the moment is at Spirit of 1876 in Castle Rock, but Thurmond said they’re actively looking for retailers in Colorado Springs.
MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE The good folks at LavaBox are proud of their products, but perhaps even more of their philanthropy. They donate a dollar from every box they sell to Team River Runner, an adaptive and veteran adventure paddling program. “We have been able to give thousands of dollars to Team River Runner already and we plan on giving much more,” Thurmond said. PASTRIES, CINNAMON ROLLS, SCONES + MORE Snowberry Bakehouse: Preparing Baked Goods for Springs Coffee Shops ARTICLE BY KAREN MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY SNOWBERRY BAKEHOUSE / ASTON CLOW Snowberry Bakehouse... Like a subtle whispering as you’re ordering your morning coffee, it’s the pastry sitting freshly in the case, awaiting your tastebuds. A mouthwatering cinnamon roll tempting you. A scone whose recipe has been perfectly repeated for the last fifteen years, waiting to be paired with your americano. But what is Snowberry Bakehouse? Where is Snowberry Bakehouse? We hear the name, we know the flavors, but this elusive bakery is unmarked and yet somehow familiarized with our coffee experiences in the Colorado Springs community. But many of us we’ve never seen it. Why? Because Jen Denman, owner and operator of this savory/ sweet bakery, and her team of three are nestled inside Building 3’s roastery in the Lincoln School of the Old North End. While Jen and her team work six days a week to prepare and deliver their delicious gifts, most of us have not connected the dot.
COFFEE SHOP CONNECTION Snowberry primarily interacts with coffee shops— “the core four,” she calls them—“Story Coffee, Kairos, Good Neighbors, and Building 3.” Jen shares the experience of primarily hosting a wholesale client base, meaning the coffee shops are her clients even more so than those of us indulging in her treats. Jen appreciates the satisfaction of knowing that the long hours of preparing baked goods, delivering them, and understanding that the first and last bites are equally enjoyable is the heartbeat of her business. The treats she makes contribute to the success of these local shops. She takes pride and finds joy in making a good product. “We know it’s good, well made with quality ingredients, and done by hand. Someone enjoys what we made by hand.” The hard work derived from a passion for food feeds into the ecosystem of entrepreneurial passions by way of healthy B2B partnerships, and we love that.

Goods are prepared for pickup between 8:30-11:30 am and slots fill up fast. With an ever-changing menu, you will have a chance to enjoy some more technical treats, as well as visit the bakery—if for nothing else than a deep breath of a bakery’s fragrance that adds such a touch to a life well-lived. The Tale o f Tw o Ta i l s MEET PIKES PEAK PREMIER DOG TRAINER, FERNANDO GONZALEZ
ARTICLE BY BY KRISTIAN DEPUE PHOTOGRAPHY BY REN CREATIVE/ABIGAIL ROSE The seeds were planted for Two Tails Training a decade ago when founder Fernando Gonzalez made it his goal to win over a friend’s rescue bait dog. A “bait dog” is sadly a punching bag used by dog fighters to train their game dogs. “I didn’t know anything about dog training, period—but I knew I was just going to be patient and present,” says Gonzalez. “Week after week, this traumatized dog would see me. In six months, the pittie went from trying to attack and kill me to being possessive and protective of me.”
SELF-TAUGHT Gonzalez is primarily self-taught: reading, studying and practicing, with years of trial-and-error to get to where he is today.
22
P E T F R IE N D LY | PR OFESS I ONAL S E RVI CE S
“I began working with a variety of dogs over and over and over again,” says Gonzalez. “Right off the bat, I was dealing with severe anxiety, human-aggressive dogs, and I was dumb enough to try. I look back at some of the things I did and think, ‘I was so stupid.’ I really could’ve gotten hurt.” But learning through experience taught him that one-on-one training is principle. “I learned very quickly that what works with 99 dogs doesn’t work for the 100th. They have different personalities and temperaments— some need a bit more TLC and some need sternness.”
STRUCTURE + LEADERSHIP Two Tails gets its name from when a happy dog wags its tail so fast it looks like it has two. Two Tails believes in structure and leadership to create structure and peace. “Dogs need direction, rules and obedience,” says Gonzalez. “With those, they end up having a sense
of purpose and fulfillment. They need to be mentally stimulated. It’s part of their inner truth. Even myself, if I don’t have structure—if I’m not waking up early to go boxing or work out, and if I’m not eating well, a disastrous domino effect happens, and quickly.” Having the owner commit to Gonzalez’s training is paramount, and he invites those interested in his services to do their research first. “I’m a very open person and I’m active on Instagram. A lot of people are sent my way, but I still make them go through my social media to make sure what I do vibes with you because that’s important. At the end of the day, it’s more about the owner vibing with me than anything else.”

PIKES PEAK LEMONADE: SUMMER + SUNSHINE
ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY MAUK
24
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Lisa DiDonato moved to Colorado Springs after 40 years of marriage. She and her husband Ches were looking to do something different. They quickly found there was a strong local farmers market scene and started attending regularly. In attending the farmers’ markets, she would see patrons wandering around with iced coffees. Lisa had always wanted to open a coffee cart but recognized that the coffee scene in Colorado Springs was already pretty saturated. So she sought out a healthy alternative for the active outdoor lifestyle of Coloradoans.
LEMONADE STAND Lemonade is typically synonymous with summer and sunshine. Boasting an average of 300 days of sunshine in Colorado, lemonade would be a perfect beverage to incorporate into the local scene so there was something for everyone. Pikes Peak Lemonade was born when Ches built Lisa a lemonade stand and they started setting up at farmers’ markets about eight years ago. Lisa is originally from Grand Junction and, paying homage to her roots, her first lemonade was made using organic lavender from Palisade. “I am very much a savory instead of a sweet person,” says Lisa, when asked about how she comes up with her unique flavors like Raspberry Thyme, Rosemary
Grapefruit and Hibiscus Lemonade. “Ches has had to taste a lot of things through the research and development process,” she laughs. “We also take ideas from our customers, though. Customers have the best ideas.”
PASSION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Organic cane sugar and all real fruit are the base for this lovely product. Their passion for the environment led Lisa to start out with Mason jars, metal lids and paper straws to encourage reusability. Guests can also bring in their own jars for a discounted refill. About five years ago, they started their first storefront in downtown Colorado Springs. Lemonade might be where it started, but that is not all they have to offer. Lemonade concentrates, cocktail mixes, simple syrups, wine slushes, cocoa products (Colorado Cocoa Company), root beer, kombucha and more are some of what patrons can find. A few years ago, they opened another lemonade stand on the east side of Colorado Springs. As it stands, they believe they are the only lemonade tap room in the nation. ART IN NATURE DKS CUSTOM ENVIRONMENTS ELEVATES OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES
28
O UT D OOR LIV IN G | HOME + DE S I GN
Artists paint landscapes for good reason. Done right, landscape is art. And that is exactly why DKS Custom Environments exists–to help homeowners and business owners create art in nature.
OUTDOOR LIVING From simple to elaborate, DKS specializes in creating outdoor living environments. Sometimes, that’s a water feature. Other times, it’s a boulder, retaining wall or outdoor fireplace. Whatever the need, the pros at DKS can transform your landscape into a work of practicality and beauty. Owner Lee Sellers’ father served in the Air Force, so he spent time overseas growing up.
“I just kind of liked everything that was outside,” Sellers said. Landscaping was a natural fit, but it’s been a progression. Years ago, homes were more affordable, leaving more money available for landscaping. Clients bought a home, then often did their landscaping all at once. These days, clients frequently tackle their outdoor living projects one at a time, Sellers said. For his clients who prefer to build in stages, he suggests starting with hardscapes, gas lines and other projects that won’t put up roadblocks for future projects. “You can always put in trees and bushes later,” he said. “Get the hard stuff done.”

AMAZING PROJECTS What would take your outdoor living space to the next level? What do you dream about? • Decorative concrete: The look of granite, slate, stone or brick at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. • Outdoor spa: Create a stunning deck to surround your spa. • Swimming pool: Think of it as a work of art. • Water features: Capture the magical power of water with ponds, waterfalls and fountains. • Custom outdoor BBQ: Create any size or style to fit your lifestyle and budget. • Custom outdoor fireplace or fire pit: Bring warmth of indoors, outdoors with natural gas or real logs. • Masonry/hardscape: One of nature’s most durable commodities. • Retaining walls: Enhance any structure and the surrounding area with natural stone and veneer.

• Patio, putting green or playground: You don’t have to do what your neighbor does. Make your outdoor space yours.
TRICKY SPACE? NO PROBLEM. Sellers’ eye for design and attention to detail have landed him numerous awards over the years, including the prestigious MAME award three times. House on a cliff, but want a backyard? Sellers loves a challenge. “My favorite projects are when the yards are kind of multi-level,” he said. “It looks like a big, hilly mess. … How do we build them a backyard? That’s the fun part!” Website: dkscustomenvironments.com Facebook: @DKS-Custom-Environments106404644359238/ Instagram: @dkscustom

Urban Tails Believes Seeing a Vet Shouldn't Be Stressful for Pets
Mobile Vet
Brings Services to You ARTICLE BY SYDNEY E. NELSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY URBAN TAILS
34
H OU SE CA LL | HOM E SERVI CE S
“It is our goal with this model to provide an environment where both the patient and owner are reassured and relaxed, eliminating so much of the unnecessary stress that comes with a trip to the vet.” -DR. ALEX ARANGUA
Most Coloradans would agree that pets are an integral part of Rocky Mountain living. Who doesn’t love a furry climbing buddy as you trek one of our 58 glorious fourteeners? A sidekick for those afternoons full of sunshine and craft beer on a brewery patio, or a purring companion on a cold winter night? For as often as we involve our pets in our day-to-day life, a trip to the vet can be a trying and unavoidably stressful endeavor.
A NEW WAY OF PRACTICING After spending years working in a clinical environment, seasoned veterinarian Dr. Alex Arangua saw a need for a different way of practicing; a way that would benefit both pets and owners. In 2019, he opened Urban Tails Mobile Veterinary Clinic in Colorado Springs. Providing an array of services and even minor surgeries in the comfort of your home, Urban Tails has a priority of not only making
their furry clients comfortable but their owners, as well. “It is our goal with this model to provide an environment where both the patient and owner are reassured and relaxed, eliminating so much of the unnecessary stress that comes with a trip to the vet,” he says. With more than 36 years of experience, Dr. Alex explains he has noted a major transformation in pets’ responses and behaviors when they are treated in their home. “Clients are amazed by how easy it is to control their pets when they are not confused and overly stimulated by the new environment they are exposed to in a regular veterinary clinic,” Dr. Alex explains. “Our exams are stress-free, and clients enjoy seeing the ‘behind the curtain’ work that goes on.”
visit, “There are more accurate vitals, pain assessments, and we can see your pet in their natural environment, providing huge benefits when coming up with treatment recommendations and meeting behavioral and environmental enrichment needs.” Urban Tails’ services include preventive care, medical care, emergencies, senior care, at-home pet euthanasia, palliative and hospice care. They typically see pets Monday thru Friday from 9am to 5pm. After-hour appointments are sometimes available. The success of Urban Tails in just a few short years is not only a testament to the passion and caliber of their carefully curated team but also a demonstration of the many advantages of caring for your pets in a way that benefits them the most.

Colorado Springs native Wendy Iaconis has a passion for pottery and has been designing and creating stunning wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces for more than 20 years. She spent her early days showing her pieces at festivals and events, but as the demand for her unique and expressive pieces grew, she eventually opened her very own studio: WLR Pottery.
“I remember being part of a group tent that was selling pottery at a local art festival,” she said. “It was so much fun and super rewarding. I loved talking with potential customers and sharing knowledge about our craft. Shortly thereafter, WLR Pottery was born.”
ARTISTIC EYE Seeing Wendy’s unique pottery pieces makes it easy to understand how her artistic eye sets her apart. “My pieces are reflective of the very earth from which they are shaped,” she said. “I find tremendous joy and inspiration turning a ball of clay into an artistic vessel that someone will use and enjoy.” After receiving formal training in ceramics at the University of Denver, Wendy has continued to refine her pottery skills at workshops and conferences throughout the US and internationally, striving to expand her knowledge and gleaning further inspiration. “I think I have a simple, delicate look to my functional pots that is enhanced by my glaze colors. I also enjoy making pieces that are a little more unique; tea steepers, travel mugs with locking ceramic lids, and microwave popcorn bowls to name a few. I think my horsehair pots are pretty unique, as well. I like to use the longer-tail hair strands that I can continuously wrap around the pot and my firing technique creates a beautiful, highly contrasted surface.”
PROMOTING COMMUNITY
WLR POT TERY
Wendy shines through her artistic ability, but also thrives on contributing to the community as evidenced by her enthusiasm for engaging with customers at events and festivals along with volunteering at schools. “I volunteer at School in the Woods for their annual tile project,” she said. “I love working with the kids, often helping them explore beyond their comfort zones.” Luckily for Colorado Springs residents, Wendy and her work are here to stay. “Colorado Springs is our home, and the art community is amazing,” she said. “I have met the most wonderful people and artists through my pottery making and feel very lucky to be a part of the arts here. And it just keeps getting more exciting!” You can find Wendy’s brilliant work at Gallery 113, Kreuser Gallery, Poor Richard’s and Reserve— her gallery in Woodland Park. If Every Kid Had a Bike...

KIDS ON BIKES EMPOWERS KIDS TO LIVE ACTIVE LIFESTYLES
ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIDS ON BIKES
Owning and riding a bike is a rite of passage. A kid’s first taste of freedom and responsibility. I asked my nine-year-old what it feels like to ride her bike. “I was so scared to learn to ride a bike, but now that I can ride, I can do much more. It’s something I can do with my sister and my friends,” she told me in her childish stream of consciousness. My seven-year-old had a similar perspective, “It showed me I can learn to do something I have never done before. It makes me feel brave. I know I am getting stronger and doing something healthy.”
BIKES ARE EXPENSIVE But a bicycle is an investment, and for some families, it’s simply not in the budget. In 2005, Paige Carmichael and a handful of friends founded Kids on Bikes to provide kids the resources to live healthy, happy, and active lives. These friends felt that the opportunity for every kid to own a bike should not be dependent on their socioeconomic status. At the time, there was a marked increase in childhood obesity as well as a decrease in daily physical activity. These friends came from a world where kids rode their bikes to school and around the neighborhood to explore.
SCREEN TIME VS. OUTDOOR TIME “Today kids spend more time in front of screens than they ever have in the past,” says Kids on Bikes Executive Director, Daniel Byrd. “There is a direct correlation with that having long-term effects on physical and mental health,” he states when describing the urgency behind their mission. “Kids need the opportunity to be active every day,” he emphasizes, “we have even heard from teachers that kids with more energy do better in school after having biked there in the mornings.” The intricacy and intentionality behind the programming of Kids on Bikes are impressive. Their team has researched neighborhoods within Colorado Springs that would benefit most from their services. They then fundraise and establish what they call community Bike Libraries. These libraries are re-purposed shipping containers that contain not only refurbished bikes but also helmets and basic
tools and parts to fix those bikes, should anything happen to them. Additionally, there is an appointed community leader assigned to each library who is trained to provide specific programming and support for that area.
EARN-A-BIKE PROGRAM Kids on Bikes currently partners with 17 community schools for their Earn-a-Bike program, as well. Kids are selected and local leaders are trained to walk alongside those kids as they participate in the program. At the end of the program, kids have the opportunity to earn not only their bike but a helmet, pump, bike lock and patch kit, as well as the knowledge and skill to utilize all of their new tools. Curated community bike rides are one way to get involved with the organization. Another is The Pedal Station, located on Bott Avenue. It's open seven days a week to take bicycle donations. “We are the best place for a bike to get a second chance and make sure it doesn’t end up in a landfill,” Byrd states as he goes on to explain how every possible part is salvaged from a bike that might not seem road worthy. As a non-profit organization, they take monetary donations, as well. "For every dollar spent, the organization is able to return $2.72 to the community in the form of social impact; it’s a good investment for those looking to make their donations count.” “We see no reason we can’t have every kid in the Pikes Peak region have access to a bike,” he says. "They can start now and develop a lifelong passion.”
GET INVOLVED Community involvement will be key to achieving this goal. There is something for everyone to do to aid in achieving the mission to inspire and empower kids in the Colorado Springs community toward a healthy and active lifestyle regardless of any socioeconomic constraints. We can all feel the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces as we collectively pedal toward a brighter future. Website: kidsonbikes.net/ Facebook: @KidsOnBikesCS Instagram: @kidsonbikescos

Fa r mers' M a rket s: A Su m mer Must Do! Produce, Jams, Tortillas, Tamales, Flowers + More
The history of farmers’ markets traces back over 5,000 years. For this long, farmers who sell direct to consumers have been productive enough to have survived cultural growth, refinement, economic downturns and escalations. A person’s desire to connect with the grower and to experience food with some dirt attached, flowers with incredible fragrance and the buzz of like-minded humans has remained untouched.
IN COLORADO... Here in Colorado, we are surrounded by ranches and farmland that supply about 250 markets across our state. Many of us toy with the experience of farming with our raised garden beds. May we be blessed with a rich experience of harvest; however, the labor and love of a farmer for the fields is a special calling. Why not make a Saturday or a Sunday morning tour and visit several farmers’ markets or visit a different one each weekend? There are so many to explore and experience, each with its own character and feel.
BLACK FOREST We love a stop at Black Forest’s Backyard Market. There is a sweet community here, games for the kiddos, a coffee truck , and fresh flowers all around. This one always feels like a great family outing with lots to do for everyone, including cute photo ops. Black Forest is changing every day and we are loving the community factor.
OLD COLORADO CITY Next is the market at Old Colorado City in Bancroft Park. You’ll want to make a day of it with flowers from Sweetwater Flower Market, produce galore, jarred goods, fresh tamales, chiles and tortillas. You’ll be wiping drool from your mouth and eager to bring home all of the goodies with you. Oh, and there’s a playground for the kiddos!
OTHER MARKETS Some other weekly markets are at Cordera Farmers Market on Sundays, Colorado Farm & Art Market (by the big carrots parallel to I-25) at Margarita at Pine Creek on Saturdays and Briargate Farmers Market on Wednesdays near Gold’s Gym. Click the link below to find others scattered throughout the Pikes Peak region. Website: coloradoproud.com/farmers-market Facebook: @COProud Instagram: @co_proud

What used to be a sleepy little pocket of the Pikes Peak region has exploded into a major hotspot for entertainment, shopping and dining. Just hop off I-25 at Interquest, Northgate or the brand-new Voyager exit and prepare yourself for the treasures of Colorado Springs’ far north. Situated between the major metropolitan areas of Denver and Colorado Springs, this area has seen massive growth in recent years.

“You’ve got this amazing corridor with lots and lots of traffic,” said Tracy Doherty, communications director at Nor’wood, the developer for much of the Interquest corridor. That traffic has brought with it lots of commerce, transforming the Interquest-to-Northgate zone into a lively entertainment hub. We don’t have enough space to list everything in Interquest Marketplace, Polaris Point and the surrounding area, but here are a handful of reasons to wander north at your earliest convenience: CONTINUED >
