When people think of golf, several significant names spring to mind: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and more. Nicklaus is a six-time Masters champion, with Woods on his heals with five wins — Palmer and “Lefty” Mickelson have four and three green jackets, respectively. Pikes Peak links pioneer William K. Jewett, originally from Long Island, came to Colorado Springs at the cusp of the 20th century. Constructed in 1898, Patty Jewett Golf Course is recognized as the third oldest golf course west of the Mississippi, and named after William Jewett’s wife. Jewett, himself, passed in 1935 and was posthumously inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in ‘96.
PUBLIC COURSE “I’d like readers to know we’re a public golf course because our gate sometimes throws people,” says Patrick Gentile, the golf division manager with the City of Colorado Springs. “Also, that the City’s golf enterprise is self-supporting — we collect no tax dollars, and we collect no sales tax from the City. That is a unique feature set up by William Jewett back in 1919 when he deeded the course to the City of Colorado Springs.” Gentile’s role is to oversee the maintenance and operations with the City’s golf enterprises, which includes Valley Hi Golf Course in addition to Patty Jewett. Highly experienced, Gentile has worked within the golf industry for 39 years — starting at the Broadmoor with their maintenance crew, and eventually
managing irrigation across their fairways. Gentile began at Patty Jewett 27 years ago as the golf course superintendent, and within the last decade, he’s overseen both the historic grounds and Valley Hi. Patty Jewett has a total of 27 greens. Their 18-hole course is a 72 par, with an additional nine-hole course available for play. The course is home to several events, including the Pikes Peak Amateur, which is held the third week in July and has been ongoing for over 70 years.
NEIGHBORHOOD HUB Patty Jewett is more than just a golf course, it’s also a neighborhood hub with the Patty Jewett Bar & Grill operating as a restaurant offering to the Old North End and Colorado Springs as a whole. The eatery is managed by veteran restauranteur and hospitality consultant Greg Howard, who’s held leadership positions with the statewide Colorado Restaurant Association. “Greg Howard has done a really fantastic job with the food and staff at the Bar & Grill,” Gentile says. “It’s not just the golfers who feed into this place. It’s the neighborhood and community. ART + HISTORY Canyon Road is Santa Fe’s must-see art destination. More than 100 galleries dot this square-mile area, making it one of the world’s largest concentrations of art galleries. Don’t forget the museums. The New Mexico History Museum details pre-European contact through the Atomic Age. The New Mexico Museum of Art features the works of early Santa Fe masters. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum highlights her iconic desert flowers and bleached bones, as well as works by her inner circle, including Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams. This area, known as Museum Hill, also showcases Native American, Spanish and world history and art at the museums of International Folk Art, Spanish Colonial Art, Indian Arts & Culture, and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. The Palace of the Governors, built in 1610, is the oldest Capitol building in the United States and has served Spanish, Mexican and Territorial governors. CHURCHES At the east end of the Plaza sits the Romanesque Revival-style Saint Francis Cathedral, built in 1869. Just south of the Plaza is the Loretto Chapel. Its wooden, spiral “miraculous staircase” uses no glue or nails—just wooden pegs and perfect carpentry. Farther south, San Miguel Mission, completed in 1626, is considered the oldest Catholic church in the United States.

When Sean Hennessy was sitting in his third-grade music class, he zeroed in on the shiny brass instrument being passed around the room. The moment that trumpet was in his hands, his destiny was realized. Inspired by the soulful melodies of jazz and the bright tone of the instrument, Sean took everything about his passion for music seriously.
TRAVELING TRUMPET Just three years from the day he first pressed that trumpet to his lips, he made his concerto debut with the Colorado Youth Symphony. He went on to perform at Carnegie Hall and the JFK Center for the Performing Arts. The melodies had a lure on his heart and even as a youth, Sean intuitively knew the powerful impact music can have and the emotional connection it inspires. Mentored by Thomas Wilson of the Colorado Philharmonic and a protégé of jazz luminary Wynton Marsalis himself, Sean Hennessy had the tools and talent to become a gifted trumpeter and composer, so he did just that. Pursuing his passion through higher education at Northwestern University School of Music and later USC’s graduate program for Film Scoring, Sean eventually found his way to a Hollywood studio,
where he expressed his talent through the unique musical facet of film scoring and composition.
BACK TO COLORADO But as a Colorado native, those majestic Rockies eventually pulled him back to his hometown of Colorado Springs. While Sean continued to compose orchestrations for film, he felt deeply that the greatest impact you can have with music was through live performance. Sean scouted out a wildly gifted group of musicians and the Hennessy 6 Jazz Sextet was formed. A unique combination of bandstand and orchestra, the Hennessy 6 members compose all original arrangements and are a brilliant showcase of musical virtuosity. “It’s our greatest wish to share our heart through music; that’s how we choose to make an impact,” Sean explains. The world was a different place when Mike Callicrate graduated from Colorado State University with an animal science degree in 1975. His college courses had prepared him to embrace economy of scale and help industrialize the meat industry. He eventually set up a state-of-the-art 14,000-head feedlot in Kansas. “I was cutting edge,” he says. In a perfect world, ranchers ranch, meatpackers pack the meat, retailers sell the meat – everyone has a niche and the different businesses complement each other. But as the meatpacking industry consolidated again and again, there was less competition. Four packers now control 80 percent of the market–a situation that has put countless smaller, independent ranchers like himself out of business, Callicrate says. Discouraged, Callicrate decided “this is not a business I want to be in at all.” He and a group of ranchers sued. A federal jury in 2004 awarded the ranchers $1.28 billion in damages after it found the country’s largest beef packer used illegal cattle contracts to artificially hold down the prices it paid them. A judge later overturned the decision. CONTINUED >

A NEW MODEL By that time, Callicrate had switched gears. Rather than continuing to fight a system that he believed was stacked against small ranchers, he decided to build an alternate path to consumers. In 2000, he formed Ranch Foods Direct to market his own cattle. Since that time, he has been transitioning his Kansas ranch to a multi-species, regenerative agricultural model, using natural methods to improve the health of the land and livestock and people. That means no performance enhancing drugs while raising the animals and no fillers or chemicals in the meat. He also added an on-farm slaughter facility to reduce stress on the animals. “My whole life is about opposing concentrated power,” Callicrate says. He thinks the industrial model of agriculture has failed and is unsustainable, whereas local/ regional food systems not only feed locales around the country, but also help those same areas thrive economically by keeping revenue local. Ranch Foods Direct’s two retail stores market and sell their high-quality meats here in Colorado Springs along with offering other local, artisan food products like Sawatch butter, Sourdough Boulangerie bread, heat-and-eat meals and soups, cheeses, prepared items like jams and salsas, a produce section with Colorado grown vegetables and fruit and a handful of other items such as handcrafted soaps and charcuterie boards. And the prices? “I’m not too sure we’re any higher,” Callicrate says. “We have our own supply chain. Our prices are very competitive with the big box stores.” They save costs by eliminating the middleman. They raise the animals, harvest them on-site at their ranch in Kansas and sell directly to the consumer.
BUILDING COMMUNITY In addition to space on their store shelves, they also provide workspace and on-site storage for numerous other local businesses, including Axe and the Oak Distillery and Goat Patch Brewing Company. Mountain Pie Co. operates a commercial kitchen out of the Town Center Drive location,
churning out thousands of gourmet meat pies each year: Steak & Ale, The New Zealander (steak and cheese), Pork Pueblo Green Chile, White Wine Chicken & Rosemary, Spinach, Mushroom & Feta and more. If you eat a meat pie at a local restaurant, there’s a good chance it’s from Mountain Pie Co. And the meat in the pie? That’s Callicrate. Owner Matthew Campbell says his goal is to scale and grow his business “responsibly and wisely. If you grow too fast, it’s not necessarily a great thing.” One step at a time, working with others in the community. Callicrate agrees. “These are the kind of enterprises that make communities thrive,” he says. “It’s all about building community. … I think in helping others, you help yourself.” Walking into Ranch Foods Direct is a bit like traveling back in time to our great grandparents’ era, when food and goods were produced within the community for the community. Less packaging. Less transport. Less waste. Jobs were local; money stayed local.
NEW VENTURE Callicrate now is working to take those local partnerships to a new level in northern Colorado Springs. “We are looking at a possible site to build a new-concept, local/regional food market, where many food related businesses can co-locate and own a share of the real estate,” he says. It’s about culture. It’s about opening the doors to someone else and letting them experience mom’s home cooking. Cooking that has been passed on through the generations; and now it’s being passed on to you. It’s about taking the time to do it right. Teasing the flavors out of the ingredients before moving on to the next step because that is what sets it apart. In a season of hurry and instant gratification, it is rediscovering timing and patience in order to hand over a plate truly made with love and care. It’s about service. This place exists right here in Colorado Springs, except the “doors” are a window and “home” is a food truck called Huevones.
CULTURE + FAMILY Gerardo Arreola moved to Colorado Springs from Chicago, and brings with him his Mexican culture and regard for food. The whole dream in moving here was to start a food truck and share his family’s culture and food with the community. His team consists of two special ladies. Mekayla is Gerardo’s sous chef in the kitchen and partner in life as they navigate starting a food truck from scratch in a new city wielding social media as their connection
to the community. La Jefa–the boss–is Elia, his mom. Gerardo gives her all the credit for his love and passion for food. She infused culture and care in teaching him about food and family. She is sure to slow him down when he tries to rush and reminds him to follow his dreams. Thank goodness for moms. His brother, Jesus, helped him find and fund the truck to start up. And Gerardo reminisces on spending time with his father and uncle learning and apprenticing as a butcher. It truly is a family affair.
FOOD IS ART It’s a small space to work with, and sometimes the menu is based on what is available, fresh, and organic. “Food is art,” Gerardo says, “and sometimes the best art comes from limited resources.” There are a handful of things on the menu at any given time, but his patrons will always find fresh buttermilk flour tortillas and salsas. “Everything else above that is a bonus,” he laughs. Whiskey is a drink that demands time; it is simply not itself without age and intention. And though it might strike some as rough around the edges, it contains complexity that begs to be recognized. Kentucky and Tennessee get a lot of credit for Bourbon and whiskey here in the United States, but craft is making a resurgence and Colorado is taking part.
CRAFTING WHISKEY Perhaps more than taking part, they are taking names. And awards. Lots of awards. As one of the first whiskey distilleries in Colorado Springs, Axe and the Oak has been making a name for themselves at spirit competitions locally, nationally and internationally since inception. They pride themselves on using locally sourced ingredients and distill their spirits right here on the east side of Colorado Springs. Among their offerings: Colorado Mountain Bourbon Whiskey, Incline Rye Whiskey, Pikes Peak Hill Shine, Citra Gin and First Stake Cask Strength Bourbon. The history of whiskey reads largely of self-sustainability. Whiskey was a way of managing a previously unusable surplus in order to mitigate waste while enterprising and providing for one’s family economically. Axe and the Oak started with five friends sharing life around a campfire. At that time, co-owner Casey Ross was on the road touring with his band. He was looking for a way to spend more time at home with his family and still be a part of something he was passionate about. He has always worked with his hands, so he figured he would have to return to his automotive industry experience. By the end of the night, the seed had been planted to consider whiskey as a viable career change.
GRAINS, MASH BILLS, BARRELS, PROOFS Whiskey production has always been a handson-process. Growing the raw materials, barrel creation, distillation, tasting, and refining recipes all require intention and a mastery of one’s craft. Each facet supports the other and all are necessary to arrive at the final product.

CRAFTING COMMUNITY When Axe and the Oak expanded and started looking for a space for a tasting room, Ivywild School presented the perfect location. It was an opportunity to be involved in the environmentally sustainable restoration of this historic building and enhance a void left in the neighborhood. Ivywild School was built in 1916. In 2009, it was one of seven schools in the city scheduled to close its doors due to declining enrollment. Some local businesses took an interest in this part of Colorado Springs history and in 2011, the building was declared an urban renewal site. Partnering with nearby residents, these businesses set to concepting and remodeling the school for a new role in the community. Today, Ivywild is home to four eateries, a brew pup, a barrel house, an artisan cocktail and coffee bar, an emporium and Axe and the Oak Whiskey House. Casey Ross and his team moved in in 2016, took every minute of two months

to renovate the space by hand. The tin on the wall came from Casey’s great grandfather’s barn. The bar top was made using wood that survived the Black Forest Fire. The handrail was used in a fashion show that Casey salvaged from his travels to New York. The fence around the outdoor area is handmade, and the cutouts from the fence were used to make the coat rack on the inside of the building. Various whiskeys as well as gin are staples in the custom tasting room. The team is adding Colorado Mountain Wheat Vodka as well as Dream Stream Barrel Proof Gin to the tasting room in May to give their bartenders and patrons a few more options. The City of Colorado Springs partnered with Axe and the Oak to create a specific vintage for the city’s Bicentennial celebration. Part of the proceeds of the Dream Stream Gin will go to supporting Colorado Parks and Wildlife. As Olympic City U.S.A. is home, the Axe and the Oak team are proud
to sponsor several local athletes in biking and cycling. Adding to the list, this year they are excited to sponsor a few drivers in this year’s 100th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
CRAFTING CONNECTION This space is a place to slow down, tell stories, to listen, and to be heard. There are no televisions anywhere in sight. But patrons will find corn hole, tables, and conversation to be shared over live music and craft cocktails. Regular events are hosted as well as a chance to bring people together over a common interest. This is no ordinary car race. This is the 100th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. It’s tough enough to imagine racing the curving, paved road up America’s Mountain in 2022. Consider the pioneers who first tackled the summit in the primitive racecars of 1916.
RETURN TO FULL SPEED The 100th running will be one to remember, featuring a full lineup of racers and the return of Fan Fest, a beloved downtown celebration, on June 24. “We are pleased to once again host Fan Fest, our prerace street festival in downtown Colorado Springs,” says Lisa Haight, PPIHC event coordinator and historian. “Look for our 15 top qualifiers in the OPTIMA Batteries Fast 15 Alley and join them for an autograph session. The popular FMX motocross jumpers will also return.” More than 30,000 people are expected for the 10-block, rain-or-shine street party.

Sponsored by Gran Turismo, the Hill Climb is the second oldest race in America. Often referred to as The Race to the Clouds, this invitation-only event is scheduled for June 26. “The 100th Running is a banner year,” Haight said. “With so much history behind us, it’s important to honor the past and remember that we stand on the shoulders of those who created this race, saw it through some lean years and broadened its scope around the world making it the spectacle it is today. This year, we welcome six King of the Mountain winners back to competition and induct eight notable individuals to the PPIHC Hall of Fame.” Drivers will travel from Japan, Luxembourg, Peru and nine other countries, as well as 17 states to participate.
THE CLIMB Visualize 156 turns winding along a 12.42-mile course that climbs 4,725 feet. The finish line sits at 14,115 feet CONTINUED >

above sea level. The thin air closer to the summit can sap power from internal combustion engines and slow competitors’ reflexes, requiring every ounce of gray matter. In 2022, about 80 drivers will compete in six divisions.
Every division is fun to watch for its own reasons. If you’re looking for the most level playing field, however, check out Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama, the only single-model division. Every car is a Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Competitors this year include George Hess III from Colorado Springs and fourth-generation racer Loni Unser, who will be racing #92, the same number her grandfather and father sported. Porsche got its start in 1948 and its cars have competed at the Hill Climb since the mid-1950s. “Shortly after its inception, they were already halfway across the planet” competing at PPIHC, said Joe Brenner, general manager of Porsche Colorado Springs. In fact, Porsche and the Hill Climb are so inextricably linked that the local dealership hosts its own Driver Meet & Greet leading up to the big event. This year, it will be June 22. “It’s a little more intimate” than the downtown Fan Fest two days later, Brenner said. “There’s no face painting or balloon animals. … It’s more a conversation with the drivers.” In 2022, Porsches make up nearly a quarter of the field. “It’s somewhat a testament to the core values of Porsche,” Brenner said. “It’s not just about performance. It’s about reliability. It’s about the over-engineering of the car.” When other cars start to chug climbing to extreme altitudes with thinner oxygen, Porsche remains a viable racecar, he said. “If you’re a climber, this is Everest. This is the ultimate challenge.”
FINAL NOTE Tom Osborne passed away unexpectedly in 2021. The former PPIHC chairman helped raise the race to new heights.
