Holidays & Giving

Stephanie Barr | stephanie.barr@citylifestyle.com

We are squarely in the middle of holiday season. Anyone tired, already? Consider this issue of the magazine your official permission slip to slow down. Parties are fun, but maybe you can't make it to every single one. School classroom events? If you're feeling overwhelmed, sign up to bring paper plates instead of the strawberry-and-marshmallow Santa kabobs. Gifts? Shorten the list, if it's stressing you out. In other words, try to leave yourself some margin this holiday season. Leave time to sit by the fire, call an old friend, read a book, take a walk in the snow or watch your favorite movie. Leave a little time for some feel-good activities, if that would add sparkle to your December. Volunteer. Foster a shelter animal over the holidays. Or instead of buying one more gift, consider donating to your favorite charity. Did you know that many nonprofits offer monthly giving programs? Sign up once for a set amount and let auto-pay do the rest. Some charities actually prefer monthly giving – the steady donation stream allows for easier budgeting throughout the year. And hey... a Lifestyle Letter wouldn't be complete without a quick plug to read the magazine! We have so many terrific articles this month. Read on to learn about our very own North Pole, a fourth-generation chocolate shop, a beloved stationery store, and local artists. We also have the low-down on a pair of outdoor gear stores – one old, one new. Off-roading more your thing? We have you covered. We give you all the details about the return of an old sport to the Pikes Peak region. And finally... we have a salute to the first responders who will be working this holiday season, while the rest of us are celebrating with friends and family. Happy Holidays to you and yours from the team at Colorado Springs Lifestyle!

POLO’S GRAND RETURN TO COLORADO SPRINGS HORSES AND HUMANS TAKE THE FIELD IN FEBRUARY

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HAMERSHOCK PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE BROADMOOR

Six horses roaring toward each other at 30 miles per hour, each carrying a man or woman with a long mallet, trying to hit a tiny ball across a field. It’s hockey on horseback – fast, precise and a little bit dangerous. “I’ve flown airplanes and gliders and done a lot of things I thought would push me to my limits,” said Nicholas Francoeur, a Space Force officer and polo player. “I have found nothing that provides the same thrill as polo.” “It’s not just about how well you can play, but how well you can play on the particular horse you’re on,” he said. “When you’re out there, you feel the horse breathing. There’s this connection between you and this horse. … That animal agrees to have you on its back.”

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

THE SPORT OF KINGS, COLORADO-STYLE After a nearly century-long hiatus, polo is returning to Colorado Springs. And not just any polo – winter polo, outdoors at Norris Penrose Event Center. That means it could be snowing. Or muddy. Or windy. Or rainy. Who knows? It’ll be the Front Range in February – the uncertainty is part of the fun. Coloradans are accustomed to skiing, snowshoeing and other outdoor sports in winter. Why not polo? One of the world’s oldest sports, it’s been around for thousands of years. Traditionally, polo is a game played by high society and the military. The terms are at first a bit intimidating: pony goals, tail shots, chukkers. But… if you’re a newbie to the sport, no sweat.

“You don’t have to ever have been to a polo match,” said Davis Tutt, director of operations for Colorado Sports Corporation, which is partnering with The Broadmoor to present the event. “The announcer will explain polo for the uninitiated, so everyone should leave with a better understanding of the sport.” Tutt said they’re trying to bring a new sport to the rodeo crowd – “people who are used to more of a laid-back, equine event.” To that end, tickets will be more affordable than at many polo events: $35 for general admission. And the Colorado Springs version will be played in a smaller arena, with three horse/human teams on each side. “We’re really just trying to get people close up against the action,” Tutt said. “You can do it on dirt. You can play in the snow. You can get dirty.” He added that there would be “elevated,” winter-themed concessions and halftime entertainment.

BRINGING BACK THE OLD Polo has a tradition dating back more than 2,600 years to Persia. Modern polo originated in northeastern India in the mid1800s, according to the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Florida. From India, it spread to Europe, South America and Australia and beyond. The sport eventually made its way to Colorado, with The Broadmoor serving as a premier polo center in the early 1900s. Resort founder Spencer Penrose was an active player in the polo community and installed four 900’ x 1800’ polo fields and stables for over 400 horses on the Broadmoor campus. A Broadmoor gentlemen's polo team competed nationally. And as interest and attention for outdoor sports continued to grow, local enthusiasts organized “The Broadmoor Polo Association” along with “The Penrose Polo Park.” CONTINUED > D ECEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

During the Great Depression and World War II, however, interest in polo waned and the Broadmoor polo auditorium was eventually converted into an indoor ice arena for figure skating. Over the last half-century, polo has seen a resurgence and today, there are more than 275 polo clubs registered with the United States Polo Association, according to the Museum of Polo. There are three registered polo clubs in Colorado: Denver Polo Club, Aspen Valley Polo Club, and Colorado State University Polo Club. Winter and snow polo were first showcased by a Swiss polo team in 1985. Today, polo on snow with cold temperatures is played across the globe from Aspen in the U.S. and Cortina in Italy to Tianjin in China. And beginning February 2023, The Broadmoor will again join the active polo scene by offering the Winter Polo Classic on Feb. 25. “You know what’s in these days? Old things,” Francoeur said, citing the popular retro fashion brand Aviator Nation. “I think we can do that with polo, too.”

WHAT TO EXPECT Colorado State University Polo will provide the horses, and the players will come from around the country. Francoeur is expected to be among them. What will the audience see? “They’re going to see horses that are passionate about the sport,” Francoeur said. “They’re going to see players who almost need that sense of speed. ... You’re going to see an audience that is a little shocked.” He promised fun and excitement for all ages and said part of his goal is to get the Springs’ large military community out to see something that is such a part of its heritage. Tickets range from $35 to $50. Websites: coloradospringssports.org/winter-polo-classic/ + broadmoor.com/ Facebook + Instagram: @thesportscorp + @thebroadmoor Francoeur's Instagram: @nichofpolo

Tucked into the foothills west of Colorado Springs is a magical place: The North Pole-Santa’s Workshop. If you look closely, you might spy the century-old Ferris wheel or the towering candy cane slide peeking through the trees along Hwy 24.

66 YEARS OF SANTA In the 1940s, former Walt Disney artist Arto Monaco sketched a young girl’s vision of Santa Claus’ home and village. Those drawings turned into blueprints for an actual village – a dozen alpine buildings including a home for Mr. & Mrs. Claus, workshops, a reindeer barn and more. The original village opened in Lake Placid, NY in 1949. A few years later, an identical village was planned for the foot of Pikes Peak, with the 25-acre theme park opening in Cascade, CO, on June 16, 1956. George Haggard, one of the original investors, eventually owned the park with his wife. Children came from all around to visit. And those who couldn’t? Haggard brought The North Pole to them, visiting orphanages in Oklahoma and Texas. “He loved that sort of thing,” said Haggard’s granddaughter, Austin Lawhorn. “My grandmother was more of the boots on the ground.” Lawhorn’s father, Tom Haggard, eventually took over the family-owned business and now, Lawhorn and her brother also help run it.

NOSTALGIA, NOSTALGIA + MORE NOSTALGIA This park is not Disneyland or Universal Studios and it’s not trying to be. “We are really a vintage park,” Lawhorn said. “We have our own magic here.” Kids can touch the same always-frozen North Pole that their parents did. They can mail a postcard from the post office, stamped with the “North Pole” postmark. They can visit Santa in his quaint cabin every day the park is open. (Bonus: While Santa’s Helpers are happy to take pictures that you can buy, you are welcome to take your own for free.) After 66 years, some of today’s visitors are the great-grandchildren of the wide-eyed youngsters who visited Santa’s Workshop in the 1950s. And today’s kids? They love going down that candy cane slide in potato sacks just as much as their grandparents did. “The world is changing, but their hearts aren’t,” Lawhorn said. “The things that they find fun? That doesn’t change.” Never been and just want to check it out? Go on a non-peak day (calendar on the website) – it’s free admission to wander around, enjoy the village and visit Santa. Simply purchase a wristband, if you’d like to ride rides. “Santa is the heart of the park,” Lawhorn said. “You don’t need to spend extra to remember your trip. … We’re not trying to nickel and dime. We’re just here for folks to enjoy themselves. We want people to keep coming back to us.” CONTINUED > D ECEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C OLORA D O S P R I N G S

21

VINTAGE + ANTIQUE RIDES It’s no small task to maintain more than two dozen vintage and antique rides and traditional log buildings. “My father likes to refer to himself as a dinosaur,” Lawhorn said. “We are always refinishing, refurbishing, painting.” Sometimes, the refurbishments cost as much as a new ride would have. But it’s all about preserving nostalgia here. The North Pole has its own fiberglass guy and a super-secret paint shop hidden beneath the Sugarplum Terrace. Other projects, they farm out to local experts like Bradley’s Machine Shop and Reblitz Restorations. “It’s a labor of love,” she said. “The rides that people like the most? They’re the old ones – old, classic ones.” Rides like the century-old Carousel featuring reindeer, the Candy Coaster and the Christmas Tree Ride. Ready for a visit? The park is open through Dec. 24, then will reopen in mid-May. “We are traditional, old-school family fun,” Lawhorn said. “I think we are for the young and the young at heart.” Website: northpolecolorado.com/ Facebook: @santasworkshop Instagram: @northpolecolorado

“As we break it in with stories and adventure, which we have sealed with wax each spring, it will withstand our use and with in-store tailoring, then lovingly be passed to another who will enjoy it during their life’s explorations.”

Fjallraven tucks itself into places that have an understanding of the way that the outdoors enhances life; cities where the greatness of the earth’s wonder is appreciated by the humans who occupy it. They resonate with spaces that are filled with those who behold the beauty and awe of the earth, her majesty. At the core of Fjallraven, they honor the grit of exploring our world, and its breathtaking nature by preparing us to traverse it comfortably. They serve as a resource of knowledge for taking care of where we explore.

EXPLORE + PRESERVE The individuals who make up the team and uphold the mission of the outdoor gear company walk alongside the individuals that make up the cities where the stores exist. The employees, all the way up to the top, support those who dwell here in Colorado Springs; the ones who are doing worthwhile work for the growth. Fjallraven strives to elevate existing local brands and support the community

while supplying nature lovers with what we need. Fjallraven values creating events for educating people on how to better explore and preserve. Their effort is to create synergy with the cities they love, like ours, with our love for adventure and quality items that last while we find that beloved dirt beneath our boots.

BREAKING BREAD During the last snowfall of spring, while Fjallraven was opening its new store in the Shops at Briargate, there was a group of curators creating serious beauty in downtown Colorado Springs. The heart of the evening centered around gathering people from different types of lifestyles and careers exchanging smiles and stories, bonded by their love for COS and the natural beauty that hugs us so effortlessly. Enamelware camping plates against a glass vessel laced with repurposed moss; delectable oysters nestled into sustainably sourced mugs that each guest kept. A notion that the dinners they host upon

arrival to a new city are their sweet way of breaking bread with a new community— Fjallraven expressing their desire to add to the thriving nature of our home.

HERITAGE CONCEPT Their mission is resolved in a heritage concept. Meaning, the company’s preference is that we only ever really have to buy one of the items in its category of function. While we are browsing their products, we understand their function; that as we break it in with stories and adventure, which we have sealed with wax each spring, it will withstand our use and with in-store tailoring, then lovingly be passed to another who will enjoy it during their life’s explorations. But how do we say Fjallraven? Turn the J to a Y and let it all roll off of your tongue lightly. Get outside. Explore. Adventure Awaits in Woodland Park GREAT OUTDOORS ADVENTURES PUTS YOU BEHIND THE WHEEL AND INTO THE WILD

ARTICLE BY KRISTIAN DEPUE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREAT OUTDOORS ADVENTURE Woodland Park is nestled within the wilderness of the Front Range, engulfed by the picturesque Pike National Forest, named after American frontier adventurer General Zebulon Pike. Founded in 1887, “The city above the clouds” is surrounded by tree-filled topography with granite rock and alpine meadows.

GETTING OUTDOORS Bringing a combined background of recreational tourism and mapping the outdoors, Woodland Park is where Drew and Angelica Stoll established Great Outdoors Adventures, an off-road and on-road vehicle rental company. They offer excursions using a range of utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) — along with three-wheeled Polaris Slingshots and versatile Jeep Gladiators. Their daughter, Christina Stoll, works as the creativity manager. “We have a variety of vehicle types to pick from, and we do our very best to

provide every guest with the best option for what they’re looking for, but we definitely focus on the exceptional experience we offer,” Stoll says. “We have a friendly, professional team that set you up with helmets, goggles, navigation and a thorough briefing,” she adds. “Safety is always our top priority, making sure everyone is very comfortable before they head out to explore our beautiful trails.”

UNIQUE + RUGGED Melissa Williams and Bailey Ashida of Visit Colorado Springs (Visit COS) experienced, first-hand, what Great Outdoors Adventures has to offer. “We did an off-road tour, driving to the most scenic areas,” says Ashida, Visit COS’s marketing coordinator. “We witnessed great views of the foliage, the terrain and captured shots of the beautiful scenery. I had never experienced anything that adventurous. It’s a unique and rugged opportunity for locals and visitors alike.”

“Our group was a mix of millennials to grandmothers, and everyone had an absolute blast,” adds Williams, Visit COS’s director of marketing. “The staff of Great Outdoors Adventures was so knowledgeable and helpful, allowing for a wonderful time. It is truly something that all ages can enjoy.” Tours vary by vehicle, terrain and time — ranging from two hours to overnight — but one of the most popular is the Sunset and Wildlife Guided Tour, offers the opportunity to see majestic moose, mule deer and elk near twilight, under twinkling stars. “We’re excited and very grateful to be in the Pikes Peak region because the inspiration is everywhere,” Stoll concludes. “Exploring the beauty of the mountains never gets old. I grew up going outdoors due to my parents’ passions — and, together, they found a way to turn that into a business, sharing exceptional experiences with both natives and tourists.” Website: goadventures.org/ Facebook + Instagram: @goadventuresco

LOOKING INTO LADYFINGERS LETTERPRESS ARTICLE BY KRISTIAN DEPUE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LADYFINGERS LETTERPRESS

With 1892 Machinery, Local Printmakers Do Good in the World

Morgan Calderini and Arley Torsone are the owners and operators of the beloved Ladyfingers Letterpress — an acclaimed stationery store in downtown Colorado Springs. However, the couple did not anticipate living near Pikes Peak. “I grew up here, but as a teen, I did not want to live here,” says Calderini. “One summer, I got away to California and signed up for a printmaking class in Pasadena. I set type, did letterpress and loved it so much, but I also thought, ‘This is a class you take, not a job.’ I wrote it off and decided to do the responsible thing: become a graphic designer.”

BETTING ON DREAMS Eventually, Calderini got as far away from Colorado Springs as she could: Rhode Island, where she met Torsone. The New England state is also where Calderini met a life-changing question: How would a client feel about your work? “It was one of those points in life where it’s clear,” Calderini says. “I couldn’t spend my life answering that question. I was drawn to printmaking — this joyful thing I was so happy doing.” “I wanted to be a printmaker, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be able to do it on a daily basis,” Calderini continues. Against all odds, she bet on her dreams. She married Torsone, who Calderini describes as “the heart and voice of Ladyfingers Letterpress.” They designed their own wedding invitation which went viral, setting a course towards becoming printmakers — and unexpectedly, their compass also pointed to Pikes Peak.

FINDING COMMUNITY IN COLORADO SPRINGS “My parents’ house in Black Forest, the house I grew up in, burned down,” says Calderini. “Also, Arley and I knew we wanted a change.” Arriving in the Springs, the two quickly found community, as Calderini describes as the “wonderful welcome wagon.” They opened Ladyfingers Letterpress in 2016 with machinery from the 1980s, ‘40s, and an antique 1892 Chandler & Price press. Together, they design and print over 250 products on-site and stock goods from small businesses owned by underrepresented people. Included in their vision statement is: …the things we make and the spaces we create are here to do and make good in the world. Our aim is for people to feel safe, seen and celebrated. Together, Calderini and Torsone use the “power of the press” to support social causes. “In a world that can feel isolating and insane, we provide the opportunity for people to see themselves reflected in the items we carry,” says Torsone. “Seeing yourself represented and acknowledged creates connectedness.” “We’re so lucky to have a terrific community here, from fellow business owners to regular customers,” Torsone adds. “The people we see daily remind us of the good in the world.” Website: ladyfingersletterpress.com/ Facebook and Instagram: @LadyfingersLetterpress Flagship location: 113 East Bijou St. Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center store: 30 West Dale St.

HOLIDAY HEROES ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HAMERSHOCK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE COLORADO SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT, DAVID SANDEN PHOTOGRAPHY

FIRST RESPONDERS SPEND HOLIDAYS SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

Ahhhhhh, the holidays! For many, it means family and friends gathering to celebrate with feasts, gifts and cozy fires. For others, the holidays usher in struggles. Danger doesn’t take a break, after all. There are still fires, falls and kids choking on toys. Domestic violence, car accidents, and heart attacks don’t stop, either. That’s why dozens of police officers, firefighters, EMTs and military folks in our community put their own celebrations on hold to make sure the rest of us stay safe.

NIGHT SHIFT IN STETSON HILLS Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Jeff Ma served eight years in the military before starting his second career as a police officer 15 years ago. These days, he’s on night shift in northeastern Colorado Springs. This father of four said although his 13-year-old understands the commitments of his job, “it affects my younger ones more.” Ma said it’s occasionally tough to watch others celebrating when he’s away from his own family around the holidays. But that melancholy lasts only a moment. “I’m happy for them,” he said. “This is the reason I do what I do – it’s to make sure the community is safe.” His division receives a lot of domestic violence calls. Those calls ramp up around the holidays due to economic challenges, visiting relatives and alcohol. Ma sees a big part of his job as “giving a voice to and empowering victims.” “Officers contact people at their lowest – on their worst days,” he said. “It’s a privilege to serve the

community and right the wrongs right there. We hopefully make their lives better.”

DAY SHIFT IN SAND CREEK Officer Logan Scheppele always knew he wanted a career that would allow him to give back. He’s been an officer with CSPD for nearly six years. When he was younger, he volunteered to work numerous holidays. These days, he and his wife have a two-year-old daughter, but even so, he never expects to have more than half of the holidays off. “When I’m at work, it’s still a nice experience to have,” he said. “As a shift, we come together. … We let each other know that we’re in it together. It’s a different kind of a celebration.” The officers have a common mission: “We’re here because we want to give back to the community,” he said. “We want to get people out of bad situations. We want to offer resources. We want to provide an ear. We’re all in here because we care.” He encourages anyone in a bad situation to please seek help. “I know it can be embarrassing,” he said, adding, “We want to go out. We want to make sure you’re safe. ... We are here to help.” Website: coloradosprings.gov/police-department + coloradosprings.gov/fire-department Facebook: @cspdpio + @csfdpio Instagram: @cospringspolice + @colorado_springs_fire

A HALF CENTURY OLD "OUTDOOR TOY SHOP" MOUNTAIN CHALET: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN LIFESTYLE

ARTICLE BY SYDNEY E. NELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MOUNTAIN CHALET

There’s only one place in town that sells fresh mountain air. Okay, they don’t sell air, but they do sell all the gear you need to get to the top of our rocky summits to breathe it all in.

THE PROSPECT OF ADVENTURE For over five decades, Mountain Chalet has been a local staple for all things outdoor: hiking, climbing, skiing, you name it. The oldest outdoor store in the state, owners Jim and Elaine Smith endearingly refer to it as their “outdoor toy shop.” The minute you walk into the shop you can feel the prospect of adventure, and it’s clear that the mountain lifestyle is the heart and soul of the Chalet. As the third owners of Mountain Chalet, the Smiths have stayed true to the shop’s rugged vision. With 40+ years of experience in skiing and 30+ in climbing, their experience lends greatly to the scope of all the store offers. The Smiths offer a wealth of resources, training, and education for getting outdoors.

outdoors so we can offer the customer not just the gear they need, but knowledge.” The Smiths and staff at Mountain Chalet also have a real passion for staying on top of the latest gadgets and technologies. “What can we say? We’re gearheads,” they laugh. “We love gear, and we use every piece of it, so we know first-hand exactly what we’re recommending to customers. We aren’t just a store that sells outdoor gear, we’re a haven and community that fosters outdoor adventures.” “We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t love adventure ourselves,” adds Elaine. “Our ultimate goal is to get people outdoors. I mean, you can hardly call it retail, we just love being involved with our customer’s adventures and will assist in any way we can to best prepare them for all they set out to do.” So, before your next trek, stop by the shop to elevate your adventure, and as they say at the Chalet: Be local. Be inspired. Be Chaletan.

GEAR + KNOWLEDGE “If we would use it, we have it in the store,” Jim explains, “but every adventurer and adventure is so unique that it’s important to us to have a staff that is well versed and passionate about the

FOUR GENERATIONS OF SWEET TREATS Taffy to Chocolate to Popcorn, and Everything in Between

ARTICLE BY SYDNEY E. NELSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARGARETT HANSEN PHOTOGRAPHY & KIRA WHITNEY PHOTOGRAPHY

In the late 1800s, Patsy Mehaney satisfied his sweet tooth by making candied popcorn in Ireland. Yet the sweet promise of the American dream called out to him and in 1901, he migrated to the United States and settled in Indiana, where he sold his treats at local fairs. Legend even has it that Patsy shared some of his trade secrets with a local company by the name of Cracker Jack. Patsy continued making his way west and eventually landed in Manitou Springs, where he established Patsy’s Candies in 1903. For over a century, Patsy’s confections have been “delighting tastebuds” and the store itself is a well-known local treasure.

THROUGH THE YEARS Patsy eventually sold Patsy’s to a family who had been his customers for years, the Osbornes. The Osbornes later entrusted the beloved shop to friends of theirs, the Niswonger family, under the condition that they’d promise to keep Patsy’s time-honored tradition of delighting people with only the highest quality of handcrafted confections. The Niswonger family has since made good on their promise and are thrilled to be carrying on Patsy’s tradition. For four generations, they have continued to perfect and evolve Patsy’s original recipes, while also expanding Patsy’s offering by contributing new treats and recipes. In speaking with fourth-generation Patsy-teer, Si Niswonger, it’s clear that the family’s enthusiasm for confections runs deep. “We use only the best for every confection we turn out: copper kettles, real butter, pure chocolate, real cream, and no additives, or preservatives. Even Patsy’s popcorn is made with pure butterscotch. We never stray from making something that we’re proud of.”

DELECTABLE TREATS If you’re already drooling at mentions of the delectable treats, we can hardly blame you. From taffy to chocolate to popcorn, and everything in between, Patsy’s puts Willy Wonka to shame. Their holiday gift baskets are community staples during the holiday season, and they have been involved in partnerships with local companies, such as the Broadmoor, for years. “We love giving back to the community that’s given us so much. Patsy’s endures thanks to our loyal customers,” explains Si. “We have customers who come in with their grandchildren and share stories about how they came to Patsy’s when they were kids. We’re honored to continue pouring our love and commitment into a shop that so many cherish.” This holiday season, stop by Patsy’s and experience a moment of pure pleasure wrapped in old-world artisanship. A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE

Have you ever stopped to appreciate a leaf? A piece of bark? What about that leaf or piece of bark in the morning versus evening light? Have you ever picked up the peach color that sunset lighting casts on an aspen tree? Or noticed how morning light can cast a pink hue on a blade of grass? Have you taken the time to consider that morning shadows are bluer? In a fast-paced world, we don’t often take the time to slow down and consider our surroundings as anything other than just that, background noise. That is why art can be so impactful.

PERSPECTIVE An artist’s passion provides a perspective on the world that the rest of us aren’t always inclined to see. They can capture a fleeting moment and hold it out for us to see, examine, and appreciate. Artists have the capability to suspend time and cause us to reflect. Sarah Reeder is that kind of artist. The details are what make her art stand out. The Colorado Springs native started running during her freshman year of high school as it allowed her to spend more time with her brother. Now, her runs are part of her process.

“I use running to learn about color variations in clouds, landscape design and earth movement,” she notes. Reeder is a mother to two boys, wife to a firefighter, and an entrepreneur in her spare time. She paints her commissions after the boys are in bed or in between cleaning their immaculately kept VRBOs here in town.

WHY NOT? When asked what drew her to art, she tells of walking through a department store to pick up some artwork for her first space. Upon seeing the price tags, she decided she would rather spend the money on art supplies and try to create. She reflects, “until I started painting, I never used to see the details or the colors of things, now I can’t not see them.” Each of Reeder’s paintings or murals has a hidden treasure that makes it special and unique to the owner. Sometimes it’s a birth date, anniversary date, initials carved in a tree, or something else that only the owner would know is just for them. “Home is a place to relax and be yourself,” she says. “It is an honor to be asked to provide a piece of joy and comfort in such a sacred space.” Facebook + Instagram: @SarahEReederArt

Good, Honest Songwriting BROTHER RYAN PROCESSES LIFE'S BIG EMOTIONS THROUGH MELODY

ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEVIN ROSE & TIAH CIGANEK

52

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | EN T E RTAI NME NT

“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” – Aldous Huxley Life and its subsequent character-building experiences are all but inevitable. When presented with these inevitabilities, Robbie Ciganek chooses beauty. We all have a story to tell, and Ciganek has chosen to tell his through song.

KNACK FOR MUSIC His musical career started with middle school band and piano lessons. Seemingly benign and perhaps relatable to some, for Robbie it was a calling. He started the “Robbie Ciganek Band” in junior college and also played in church for a while. Ciganek found that he had a knack for music. But it was his knack for poetry that took his musical career to the next level. As time progressed, he found that processing life’s big emotions through a melody were an effective, and quite beautiful, outlet. He appreciated artists like John Mayer who were master storytellers and provided inspiration. He taught himself to play guitar and leaned into the emotion. “The end goal is always to feel the thing I am trying to convey – that’s when I know it’s done,” he says. “Brother Ryan” is the name of Ciganek’s band, and when pressed about the origins of the name, Ciganek explained

eloquently, the band is named after his brother, Ryan. Ryan is also a musician, living in the northwest.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Robbie’s musical career started in Chicago where he self-produced, mixed and mastered with Kevin Rose. He is humble in his beginnings and says he sought to “surround [himself] with musicians that are a lot better than [him].” He was visiting his wife’s family in Colorado when they fell in love with the area and decided to make it home. Ciganek works for a tech distribution company when he is not songwriting and is a dad to his lovely 15-month-old daughter. Ellory is now his muse and a reminder of promises kept and that there can be beauty at the end of a struggle. His goals, through music, are to reach people and create new sounds through well-crafted songs while being authentically and unapologetically themselves. His shows are family-friendly and contain some good, honest songwriting. Until you are able to make it to their next show, you can experience Brother Ryan’s sound wherever music is streamed. The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
