DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK POSRSCHE TAYCAN 4S THE FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE VEHICLE MADE FOR COLORADO DRIVERS ARTICLE SCOTT BARR PHOTOGRAPHY PORSCHE OF COLORADO SPRINGS

take it for a ride IN THE PAST, YOU HAD TO MAKE A CHOICE: SPORTS CAR OR ELECTRIC VEHICLE. As car manufacturers muddled their way into the EV market, buyers saw watered-down performance and mediocre features. Finally, there’s a solid luxury electric sports car option. Porsche’s new Taycan lineup reverses the typical evolution with a top-down approach. No baby steps here. Inspired and built with Porsche precision and intelligence, the Taycan Base 4S, Turbo and Turbo S models all exude the best of what Porsche has to offer and has always brought to the driving experience. I had the pleasure of working with the topnotch team at Porsche of Colorado Springs in coordinating a driving experience with the new Taycan 4S. Although a step below the Turbo and Turbo S, the 4S might be the ideal vehicle for all Colorado driving conditions. All wheel drive, 522 horsepower and zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds leaves nothing more to be desired. Powerful enough to put on the track or to compete in the

16

Colorado Springs Lifestyle | April 2021

Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the Taycan 4S simultaneously delivers the smoothest and most comfortable ride on the road today. This car is one that delivers you in style for dinner at the Broadmoor, and the back seat leg room would allow you to take your kids to hockey and gymnastics practice comfortably, gear and all. The perfect Colorado vehicle. I have a kid who is a ski racer. My wife and I do an incredible amount of driving in the snow. And let’s be real… everyone likes to play in the snow, including sports cars. So, was I going to let an opportunity like this go by without allowing this Porsche Taycan 4S to have some fun too? After being briefed on the Porsche Taycan’s instrument panel and operational details by Justin Underwood at Porsche of Colorado Springs, I started my trip, heading home to the Old North End and finally starting up Highway 24. As the road starts to wind past Manitou, I enter the canyon feeling the Taycan gripping the road like a highspeed roller coaster. The Taycan positions all the batteries in the bottom of the vehicle, lowering the center of gravity, enhancing the attachment and grip to the road. Additionally, the Taycan comes in weighing nearly 2 tons, contributing to the grounded and safe feel the vehicle delivers. After passing through Woodland Park and Divide it starts to get fun. Heading up Wilkerson Pass there are straight-aways that encourage me to test CONTINUED >

the acceleration. I slow down to 10 miles per hour, step on the gas pedal, which I don’t think you are even allowed to say in an all-electric vehicle, and am up to 75 mph before I can blink. The response is immediate, no lag, no turbo windup, just BAM! As I crest Wilkerson Pass and the Collegiate Range comes into view, I glide down on to South Park, where you can really test some of the acceleration. The Porsche Taycan 4S is just a fun car to drive. Starting at $103,000, the entry point is reasonable in the scheme of Porsche. Start adding some of the features and that price will grow but remains realistic for a car of this caliber. This is a car that deserves a test drive from everyone. Especially those who are in the market for an all-electric vehicle and for those who appreciate performance in their driving experience. The efficiency, function, safety, and performance boxes all check off on the Taycan 4S. Do yourself a favor and visit the team at Porsche of Colorado Springs today. Test drive the Porsche Tayacn 4S and decide for yourself. Porsche is not a pressure driven sale… it is a passion sale. At the very least, you will meet some of the best guys in the business, and who knows? You might just drive away in the car of your dreams. SUSTAINABLY DESIGNED + BUILT FURNITURE

GEOFFREY KEATING IS A FIFTH-GENERATION COLORADO SPRINGS FURNITURE MAKER WHO HAS TUCKED HIS WORKSHOP INTO THE MAIN LEVEL PORTION OF AN OLD NORTH END HOUSE. Everything about it feels welcoming in the sort of way that encourages us to use phrases like “the art of living slow.” During the morning, natural light pours in from floor-to-ceiling windows and just through the back door is the most idyllic shake-cottage offering just a glimpse of its texture, prompting a taste for more. The ambiance of the space sets the scene for the masterful craftsmanship that takes place at the hands of Geoffrey Keating. His pieces are classic, warm, exclusive, timeless. SUSTAINABILITY When Geoffrey speaks of his processes, the inclusion of sustainability is naturally woven into the threads of conversation. Long before it was mainstream to consider using sustainably grown product, this has been a weighty part his protocol. Investing in the extra cost and the time to dig for the rare mill that offered FAC (following another crop) harvested wood is trendy feat for the ethics of his company.

KEATING WOODWORKS (CONTINUED)

It’s a part of the lengthy process of ensuring quality in the final product. This process has grown easier as access to this category of wood is more readily available now than when he first began 12 years ago. But sustainability isn’t only considered on the product level. Better quality wood contributes to the lasting effect of his furniture, however, the design also plays into his sustainability efforts. When pieces can last generations in durability, but only fit the look of today, it’s counterproductive. Geoffrey’s pieces aren’t created to fit into a trend or to only last in one home, but to be heirloom pieces for generations. QUALITY + BEAUTY As an old home built during the early days Colorado Springs still stands with character and is sought after by many locals and those trickling in, Keating Woodworks’ furniture incubates a similar attraction for quality and beauty to be nestled into one’s home. Geoffrey’s process of conceptualization to finalization is a meticulous and intentional. While production of an ordered piece takes just 2-3 weeks of proper woodwork, it can take more than a year to develop a piece worthy of a permanent spot in the Keating collection. After drawing inspiration from something as simple as an illustration in a child’s book, Geoffrey reimagines the piece in his mind, draws sketches, finds pieces from his scrap pile to make a prototype and works the piece until it’s just right. This is part of what creates a connection between his furniture and his clientele. After all, a Keating piece is as beautiful as it is useful. They have different vendors, different merchandise and a different feel. “There are a few items that overlap, but most everything is going to be one-of-a-kind,” Ani says. “Even the ones that overlap may be doing entirely different things in each store.” In other words, visit both shops. And perhaps in the future, you’ll be able to visit Eclectic shops when you’re traveling, too. Ani and Peri have big dreams. “The sky’s the limit,” Peri says. “We have seen this model work so well and been able to replicate it really beautifully in our city. We really believe that this can work anywhere there is someone to shepherd the vision.” They are visiting with beloved former vendors who have moved elsewhere about the possibility of opening Eclectic shops in their new cities. And closer to home? They’re raising awareness about the value of shopping local in Colorado Springs. “Anybody who is deciding to do the Target thing over us, we want them to at least give us a shot so that we can try to prove to them that they can find what they need here, as well,” Ani says.

COLORADO S PR I N G S COMMUNIT Y The past year has been tough for businesses. But

“You’re getting something that no one else is going to have for your special day,” Peri says. Think vintage jewelry. Reception hall decorations. Candles with custom labels. One-of-a-kind woodworking or photography pieces. Unique bridesmaid gifts. Leather goods or candles in repurposed beer cans or bottles for the groomsmen.

Eclectic has shifted, adapted and grown – due in large part to the residents of Colorado Springs. “I’m really proud of our community and the way they have rallied around small businesses,” Ani says. “It’s just been incredible to watch in the midst of such a difficult year how much support we’ve gotten from top to bottom.” Peri agrees. “Colorado Springs really sprung into action to help protect their small businesses. We’re just so fortunate to have already existed in this city, so much so that we opened a second store during a pandemic. I don’t know anywhere else that that would have worked.” Website: https://shopeclecticco.com/ Facebook: @eclecticcolorado Instagram: @eclecticco._

HOT SPOT

t he eng l ish l it ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DANI WOLFE/ ABOUT THE SPRINGS

BALANCE HAS BEEN RESTORED TO THE SPRINGS! Why? Because Ivywild School has reopened, and just in time for sunny patio weather. It’s also got some impressive upgrades. Ivywild went into hibernation last fall to regroup and strategize. The wait has been well worth it, though, as the grand reopening features exciting new food offerings like Detroit style pizza and a building-wide liquor license. I paid a visit to Ivywild’s unique watering hole, The Principal’s Office, where Consulting Bartender Erika Mullet was kind enough to mix us a wonderfully refreshing spring cocktail:

DIY ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER

A Chemical-Free Home

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.
