They are grand, majestic creatures with a lot of heart. What a lot of people don't realize, however, is that when retirement day comes around, great numbers of these beautiful animals end up in slaughterhouses. To make matters worse, many of them still have lots of life and spirit left in them. It’s because of this that there's a place in Cocoa with equal measures of heart, where retired equines can stay until they are adopted. It's called Hidden Acres Rescue for Thoroughbreds, and it's a refuge for discarded or unwanted horses whose "usefulness" is over within the racing community. But anyone who has ever come into contact with most of these castoffs knows that that mindset just isn’t accurate. They may no longer be fit for the track or bring in accolades and trophies for their owners, but don't count them out just yet; glue-factory material they are not. Just ask Suzee Norris, founder and executive director of the rescue. She's been riding since the age of 7 and rescuing and training horses since the age of 14. She knows a thing or two about the animals, and she'll tell you their track days may be behind them, but they've still got a lot to contribute.

That's why she founded HART in 2011. Her first rescue many years earlier was a thoroughbred in rough shape. Suzee, along with the help of her trainer, was able to develop the horse to the point that she and the animal would go on to win every event they set their sights on. This laid the foundation for everything to come. Suzee is passionate about the subject. When asked what the biggest problem is regarding the plight of these creatures, she says lack of education and adopters. For a number of reasons, people aren't aware of the

Thoroughbreds are very loyal and give it all they've got, according to Suzee. Depending on the animal, they can race anywhere up to 8 to 9 years of age or retire as early as 3 to 4 years old. Thousands of young equine athletes retire early due to temperament or injury, and sadly many face slaughter as an only option, experiencing cruel conditions during transport and at the slaughterhouse. Fortunately, the Racing Commission is also working on changing all that, and organizations like the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance have formed, so she and other owner/operators of rescue facilities are not completely alone in their concerns and efforts. But much more still needs to be done. At HART, each horse is evaluated for physical and mental status upon entering the farm prior to beginning a training program. The group prides itself on its evaluation process, which helps create a plan for the animals’ “second careers.” And there are lots of options for them. For instance, difficult placements, such as older thoroughbreds, can make terrific therapy horses. The training is extensive and lasts as long as the animals are there. While most generally stay for three to six months, some horses are there for as long as two years. Training varies, according to goals, but the groundwork is undertaken first. That means no riding right off the bat. Suzee says she lets the horses tell her when they’re ready to move forward through body language and other indicators, and it’s her job to listen. At times they may have as many as 20 horses on the property, but 10 is considered ideal. Most of them come from Gulfstream Park in Fort Lauderdale. HART finds many potential adopters through Facebook posts, but the organization utilizes classified ads as well. So far, the team has placed about 150 animals in better situations.

Diane began training shelter dogs in 1995 and comes with an impressive background or "pedigree" in canine instruction. She not only has a number of impressive accreditations, such as Canine Good Citizen & Trick Dog Evaluator, but she was also hired by PetSmart in 2003 to lead its training program for its upstate New York expansion. Diane also served as president of the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers from 2004-2006. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you're wondering how she's been so successful in her chosen field, she uses a number of training techniques that click with both dogs and humans alike. They are based on the idea that people want to have fun while training their dog and that the animal should remain engaged through mental stimulation, because “learning and play are intrinsically linked.” It's accomplished through lure-and-reward training and clicker training, and it's successful when undertaken as a team between animal and owner. LARGELY THANKS TO THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA, NEW TRENDS IN PHILANTHROPY HAVE EMERGED AS WE SHARE INFORMATION FASTER AND AS PART OF A MORE WIDESPREAD AUDIENCE THAN EVER BEFORE. There has never been a shortage of ways to give back, from volunteering to providing monetary support, but it’s interesting to see how these giving habits have evolved with each generation. Whatever generation you belong to, your financial advisor can offer guidance on giving strategies that are tax-conscious and make the most of your hard-earned dollars, while allowing you to exercise your generosity on behalf of causes that are meaningful to you. The Silent Generation: Born 1925-1945 Born around the Great Depression, this generation prospered in the years of economic growth that followed World War II and are some of today’s most generous donors—Warren Buffett included. Those active on social media—this generation makes up 10 percent of Facebook users—may donate online, as well. If you’re in this group, your strong values have rubbed off on your children, and you tend to support causes like education and basic needs for the less fortunate. Generation X: Born 1964-1979 In 2015, the top 50 donors contributed an additional 33 percent over 2014, spurred in part by tech entrepreneurs, some of whom donated more than $500 million each. Tech-savvy Generation Xers grew up alongside the Internet, so donating to and promoting causes online is par for the course for this crowd, who also support for-profit businesses, like Toms Shoes or Warby Parker, that donate for each item sold.

SHELTER ANIMALS ARE ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TO PLACE IN FOREVER HOMES. They are also the most frequently returned. It's an epidemic across the nation, as well as in many other countries. Here in Brevard County, Sheriff Wayne Ivey is taking action to help these homeless animals. The Sherrif's Office took overÂ the Animal

Department in October 2014 in hopes that it would lead to improvements within the agency. Since that time, Ivey has made huge strides in the city's treatment of shelter animals. In the beginning, probably the largest concern the agency faced was the number of euthanizations among the animals in their care. The good news is those numbers have steadily decreased each year since the takeover (from 4,869 in 2013 to 160 in 2017). They were also concerned with animal care and facilities, among other issues.

GETTING STARTED One of the first things Ivey did was to enlist the aid of inmates to walk dogs in order to supplement shelter volunteers and free up staff for other duties. So far, it's been a great success, with incarceration studies showing it's beneficial to Taking a dip

in animal-related issues" and to seek ways to raise more funds to supplement the growing costs of animal services, through donations and sponsorships. At the time, Ivey was quoted in Florida Today:Â "Animal control and animal services are vital parts of our community. By the end of next year, we want this to be a model for other agencies. I feel very confident in our team."

MAKING PROGRESS In January 2018, county commissioners unanimously approved new animal control rules proposed by the sheriff. They include establishing a spay/neuter trust fund, a new public education program, tethering guidelines for canines left outside and others. The measures are designed to improve the lives of animals and residents. Now essentially a no-kill facility, since it has a live-release rate of 90 percent or higher versus the 55 percent when the transition occurred, more animals than ever are waiting for adoption. Rescuing an animal is a gift. More people are adopting rather than buying from breeders than ever before, and many of them say the animals rescued them, not the other way around. Shelter animals have just as much to offer as pedigreed pooches, if not more. They are frequently so grateful to be out of the noise and madness that prevails in most shelters and rescue facilities that they make the loyalist of pets who want nothing more than to be loved and the chance to give back.

ANIMAL ADOPTIONS Beth Digiorgio of Malabar miraculously rescued her family’s dog, Sasha, twice from Animal Services. The first time was in 2009 when Sasha was just 1 year old, and they adopted her for their son Nick. After Beth thought they’d lost Sasha forever, an incredible reunion took place after 5 ½ months apart. Beth spoke of how loyal Sasha is and how the animal literally saved her life in 2017. AWARDS & ACCOLADES In February 2018, members of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Unit received recognition at the Florida Animal Control Association Awards for their outstanding innovation, dedication and commitment to finding forever homes for homeless pets. They were presented with the “Outstanding Cooperative Team Achievement Award." Soon after in April, Ivey and his team received national attention as recipients of the prestigious Maddie Hero Award and a $10,000 grant given in recognition of “the 'top dogs' in communities that are not only advancing the welfare of companion animals in the United States, but are leading the way with their innovative ideas, progressive thinking and lifesaving actions.” Relying heavily on staff—like Director of Animal Services Joe Hellebrand and veterinarian Dr. Sarah Boyd—and volunteers, Ivey has given credit where credit is due. “We were able to put an amazing team together—a team that consists of staff, volunteers, rescues and other animal welfare organizations—and I’m smart enough to stay out of their way and let them do what they do best: save animals," he says.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT The agency also counts on support from community members. AJ Hiers, of Boniface Hiers Motor Group, has been purchasing food for the shelter animals since the 2014 transition, helping to feed more than 24,607 animals in the process. A promoter of "Adopt Don’t Shop," he’s also brought in volunteers and resources, paid adoption fees for the month of December and donated $10,000 to build the shelter’s dog park. Other contributors to the cause include Aubree, 3, and Cadance, 4, daughters of Eric and Nikki Gould, who have made it a family tradition to request donations for BCSO's animal shelter in lieu of personal gifts.
