C

OCOA BEACH HAS COME A LONG WAY FROM THE FUNKY LITTLE BEACH TOWN DOTTED WITH “SURF GHETTOS” IT ONCE WAS. Over the years, a gradual transformation has taken place. Now, you can find a number of architectural designs throughout the community that reflect contemporary trends.

One such example can be seen in the home of Alicia and

Tim Phillips, owners of Phillips Development & Design. The couple took an outdated and inefficient property located on South Tropical Trail and transformed it into the kind of sleek, modern living space resembling that of beachside residences south of Melbourne Beach on your way to SBI. Stripping the nearly 5,000-square-foot structure down to the studs in January 2016, the extensive rebuild included a major reconfiguration that changed the entire look, inside and out. The home was designed in large part for entertaining, and the goal was to create an open floor plan flooded with natural light that would convey a comfortable, homey feel, rather than a sterile environment sometimes associated with contemporary builds. While the style might be referred to as midcentury modern, the couple achieved what they think of as a European contemporary. The result is a less formal, more adaptable living space that provides dazzling views from every room in the house. The outcome is also their way of fighting the predominant “Florida-tarian” look Alicia hopes will one day fade away. If you’d like to get the look they’ve created in the dining room, you can find the single-slab rectory table made of reclaimed wood at Restoration Hardware. The oversized apothecary jars, perfect for centerpieces and displaying collections, are available at Pottery Barn.

BARRE WORKS! WHILE SWISS AND BOSU BALLS ARE GREAT FOR BUILDING CORE STRENGTH AND IMPROVING BALANCE, THEY DON’T PROVIDE US WITH THE KIND OF CARDIO WORKOUTS THAT DOCTORS SAY WE NEED TO REMAIN HEART HEALTHY. The latest trends in fitness, however, get your heart rate up while allowing you to tone your body and build muscle. Fortunately, you don’t have to live in a sprawling metropolis to be able to take advantage of them. Right here in Cocoa Beach you can find facilities that offer the same kinds of challenging workouts that you’d expect in larger cities. One local gym provides members with four workouts that are as varied as the people seeking them out and the reasons behind them. That facility is Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness, and their classes have a broad appeal because they offer exercise programs to fit any lifestyle and most fitness levels.

PILOXING This popular new trend combines the power, speed and agility of boxing with the targeted sculpting and flexibility of Pilates, long known for toning, lengthening and strengthening muscles. It’s a fat-burning workout set to exhilarating dance moves, which incorporates the use of weighted gloves for enhanced toning benefits. If you want to move quickly with focus and precision, it’s the perfect workout.

BARRE WORKS! While yoga, recognized for its Zen-like mental and physical benefits, has been around for centuries, "barre works!" is not your mother’s yoga. This fitness trend is unique because it’s a combination of ballet, Pilates and yoga all wrapped up into one challenging full-body workout using light weights, ballet barre and yoga mats. Another nice thing about it is no ballet experience is necessary to begin. CONTINUED >

DANCE FITNESS TRENDS Dancers have always known the benefits of shaking your moneymaker, but it wasn’t until primetime celebrity dance competitions swept the nation that your average Joe caught on. This trend has a lot to do with contestants gushing about weight loss and increased stamina. It’s fun and fast-paced, so you don’t get bored while working your upper body, lower body and core, but you’ll definitely know you’ve had a workout when you’re done. This is a good choice for workout partners looking for a team fitness situation. Staying active can lead to a longer, healthier life while maintaining precious mobility with fewer aches and pains. FIVE KEY PLANNING FOR A FINANCIALLY FIT RETIREMENT

BEYOND ASKING WHERE YOU SEE YOURSELF AND EVEN WHAT YOUR LIFELONG GOALS ARE, EFFECTIVE RETIREMENT AND LONGEVITY PLANNING BEGS SOME VERY BIG QUESTIONS. Review the points below and consider how housing, transportation and health considerations all play a role in planning for your future. #1 WHERE WILL YOU LIVE? Whether you’re bound for a dream home or planning to stay put, housing likely will be your biggest expense in retirement. While aging in the comfort of your own home would be ideal, modifications to the home—or your plan—could be necessary as mobility and transportation challenges arise. POINTS TO CONSIDER: ++

Do you want to stay in your home? Will it need to be modified?

++

What housing options are available to you, and what will they cost?

++

Would you want to downsize? Relocate to a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood? Eighty-six percent of adults age 65+ want to

stay in their current home and community as they age. —AARP PPI, “What is Livable? Community Preferences of Older Adults,” April 2014 26

In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.

Red

For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries

Purple

Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets

Green

Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas

Orange

Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches

White

White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips

Black

Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries

The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

Confessions of A Fitness Trainer ARTICLE REBECCA WEST PHOTOGRAPHY BENJAMIN THACKER

IF YOU’VE BEEN GETTING DOWN ON YOURSELF FOR YOUR FLAGGING INTEREST IN GETTING FIT OR YOU FIND YOURSELF FALLING OFF THE FITNESS WAGON TIME AND AGAIN, DON’T DESPAIR. Trying to stay healthy, even for fitness professionals, can be difficult, especially when it comes to discipline and diet. Here are some confessions Colleen Tokarz, fitness director at Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness and a personal trainer, shared.
