OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH CHRISTIAN DAVIS A recent sports and/or academic highlight? “Definitely qualifying for State this past summer with my club team, Sooner Swim Club. It felt great to hit that milestone! Now, the goal is to make it happen again with the Moore High team in February 2026. We’re putting in the work.”

Personal highlights? “I’m Christian Davis, and I swim for Moore High. My parents are David and Melissa Davis. When I’m not in the pool, I like to relax by reading, checking out some YouTube videos, and staying fit with calisthenics workouts. Oh, and spending time with Jesus is a big one for me.”

How do you maintain balance? “Honestly, balancing it all is a constant process—I’m still learning how to manage my time better. Swimming takes up a huge chunk of my schedule since I train with both the high school and club teams, so I log a ton of hours in the pool every week. It’s tough, but I’m slowly figuring out a system to get everything done.”

Plans for the future? “The plan is to head to the University of Oklahoma. As far as my major goes, I haven’t locked anything down yet, but I’m not worried about it. I’m just trusting God to open the right doors for my career path when the time comes.”

MICHELLE ANUM A recent sports and/or academic highlight? “My biggest sports highlight is being a varsity starter all four years of high school, even with all the coaching changes. Academically, I’m super proud of keeping a weighted GPA over 4.3 and staying in the top 2% of my class since freshman year!”

Personal highlights? “I’ve been playing basketball since elementary school—my older brother was actually my first coach! I started playing for club teams in 6th grade and was named an All-State Honorable Mention last season. Outside of the court, my main goal is just being a strong leader and keeping a positive attitude.”

How do you maintain balance? “It gets really stressful sometimes, honestly! When things get crazy, I just take a deep breath, and then I prioritize. I figure out what needs my attention most that day—homework, practice, a social event—and then work my way down the list from there.”

Plans for the future? “My immediate goal is getting scouted and collecting basketball offers this season. If I don’t get an offer I’m happy with, I’ll be applying to schools like Purdue University or the University of Oklahoma. I plan to major in either Electrical Engineering or Business—I want a career that is challenging!”

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2026 PUBLISHER

Dear Cleveland County Community, The dawn of a new year—especially one focused on Health & Wellness—is a dual-edged sword. It’s a time filled with the genuine excitement of renewal, a chance to set fresh goals and dream about the year ahead. Yet, for many of us, January quickly brings the weight of expectation: the pressure of grand resolutions, rigid diets, and the race toward an often-unattainable perfection. This issue was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. Like many of you, I look for a theme to anchor my intentions. When 2025 started, I was personally struggling and sought a single word to keep me grounded. The word that came to me was Today. I visualize the 'x' before it as a symbol for the unchangeable past, and the 'x' after as a reminder that tomorrow is not guaranteed. xTodayx became my personal compass—a focus on the only time we truly have to work with. I encourage you to seek out just the right word or phrase to help focus your intentions for 2026. (I'm praying for mine now!) Our greatest takeaway this year should be this: Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether you’re working on your business, health, or relationships, the difference-maker is not what you do occasionally, but what you commit to most of the time. You wouldn't eat a rich dessert every night, but savoring one now and then is a treat. You can't be on vacation every day, but intentionally planning a couple of restorative trips each year is a realistic goal. This year, let's focus on those small, consistent actions that build a more balanced and fulfilling life. Inside this issue, you’ll find actionable advice on joining a fitness class, carving out essential moments for rest, and mastering the "most of the time" choices that truly shape our well-being. Here’s to a healthy, happy, and consistent new year—we are rooting for your sustainable success!

In the fast-paced world of fitness, one brand stands out for its unique blend of science, technology, and community: Orangetheory Fitness. Voted USA Today's #1 Best Gym, Orangetheory is not just a workout; it is a full-body experience designed to drive results you can see and feel, with the ultimate purpose of giving people a longer, more vibrant life. By combining strength and cardio, this group fitness program helps members boost metabolism, burn calories, and build muscle—all while delivering profound, lasting health benefits. The secret to Orangetheory’s effectiveness lies in the pursuit of the Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) effect, often called the “afterburn.” Members wear the OTbeat™ performance monitor, which displays real-time heart rate data via the proprietary OTconnect™ platform, guiding them through five personalized heart rate zones. The critical goal is to spend 12 to 20 minutes in the "Orange Zone" (84-91% of your maximum heart rate) to maximize the EPOC effect, ensuring your body continues to burn calories at an elevated rate for up to 24 hours post-workout.

A CULTURE OF ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT

While the science is the engine of the workout, the supportive community culture is the heart of the studio experience. At Orangetheory, you are never just a number on a screen. You are part of a crew striving for "More Life." This inclusive and supportive environment is fostered through several key elements: • Group Energy: You share the floor with fellow members, drawing energy and motivation from the collective effort. The group atmosphere pushes you harder than you might push yourself alone. • Coach-Led Connection: Certified coaches do more than just guide the workout; they learn your name, know your goals, and provide personalized encouragement and modifications, ensuring the workout is challenging yet safe for all fitness levels. • Shared Milestones: From setting a personal best on the treadmill to competing in signature events like the Transformation Challenge, members celebrate each other's achievements, making the journey feel collaborative rather than competitive. BEYOND CALORIES: THE PROFOUND HEALTH AND LONGEVITY BENEFITS:

Orangetheory’s high-intensity interval training (HIIT) yields significant results that extend far beyond weight loss and aesthetic goals. • Cardiovascular Health: The structured interval training scientifically strengthens the heart, helping it pump more efficiently. Consistently reaching the higher heart rate zones helps to improve cardiorespiratory capacity, reduce resting heart rate, and lower blood pressure—all critical factors in reducing the risk of chronic and cardiovascular disease, the global number one cause of death. • Metabolic and Bone Health: The strength-training portion is essential for building lean muscle, increasing bone density, and improving joint health, which supports mobility and vitality as you age. Coupled with the EPOC effect, this dual-focus improves overall metabolic efficiency and helps regulate blood lipids, contributing to better long-term health. • Mental Well-being: Exercise is a proven, powerful tool for mental health. The intensity of an Orangetheory workout releases a flood of "feel-good" hormones like endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. Regular participation has been shown to reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, while the group environment provides a crucial community support system

A THREE-PART TOTAL BODY CHALLENGE

Every 60-minute Orangetheory session is coach-led and follows a dynamic, daily-changing template that systematically rotates members through three stations: • Treadmills: The cushioned Flex Deck minimizes joint impact as participants power walk, jog, or run through intervals designed to build endurance and speed. • Rowers: These full-body, low-impact machines engage up to 85% of your muscles to build power and stamina. • Floor: This station focuses on building strength, stability, and functional movement using equipment like dumbbells (up to 70 lbs. in most studios), TRX straps, BOSU®, and YBells. For members seeking lower-impact cardio, a bike or strider can also be used.

16

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FI TNE SS

This personalized experience is further enhanced by technology, allowing members to track progress through the mobile app and even measure body composition with optional InBody Scans at participating studios. This commitment to tracking and transformation is highlighted in events like the Transformation Challenge (January 26 – March 22, 2026), an 8-week program challenging members to complete three workouts per week for six of the eight weeks, focusing on fat loss or muscle gain. Orangetheory's unique, science-backed approach and supportive community have made it one of the world's largest and most innovative group fitness brands. If you are in the Oklahoma City area, you can find a studio in Moore 405.703.5259 or Southwest Oklahoma City 405.876.7178. Call for a free week and begin your journey to a more vibrant life.

Ashley Armstrong and Jordan Terry of Wellness Restored Integrative Medicine opened their doors in September of 2025 and have over 35 years of medical and health experience between them, but they feel as though they are just getting started. Wellness Restored was born as a collaboration between Jordan’s medical expertise and Ashley’s personal training, nutrition, and habit-formation expertise. Their approach is holistic and comprehensive, working together with their patients to treat the whole person from the inside out. Integrative Medicine at Wellness Restored has four facets: Evidence-based- the interplay between conventional medicine, scientific research and alternative therapies for healthy habit change and lasting results. We investigate the root cause alongside the patient’s symptoms and lab work. Holistic- Focused not only on physical symptoms but the overall well-being of the patient: mental, emotional, relational and spiritual. Nutrition plays a large role and we believe food is medicine. Collaborative- we believe in teamwork between you, your practitioner, and nutritionist. We listen to you, consider your preferences, goals, environment, level of support and we create simple, sustainable habits for you to implement long-term. EpigeneticYour genes don’t determine your destiny. They influence but do not determine your health. Environment, habits and mindset play a large role in your overall wellness. Let’s Meet Jordan Terry, APRN-CNP, nurse practitioner and mother of two. She shares, “My path into functional medicine began long before I officially made the transition. In NP school, I realized how much of our training centered around diagnosing a condition and matching it to the right prescription. While conventional medicine is beneficial and medications absolutely have their place, I found myself wanting more. I wanted to understand why people were getting sick, what was happening beneath the surface, and how we could slow, improve, or even prevent some of the chronic issue people were living with every day. Around this same time, my dad wasn’t feeling well, and I wanted to help him in a deeper, more comprehensive way. I took my first functional medicine course hoping to understand the body as a connected, dynamic system so I could support him and others like him. Not long after, he was diagnosed with cancer. Walking through his diagnosis, his treatments, and ultimately losing him was one of the most difficult and defining experiences of my life. His cancer didn’t make me believe that lifestyle causes or prevents everything- far from it. Cancer is incredibly complex, and many factors are outside our control. But that season opened my eyes to how much patients need compassion, time, context, and support. It showed me how important it is to care for the parts of health we can influence: our food, our stress, our environment, our habits, our emotional well-being. And it strengthened my desire to practice medicine in a way that sees the whole person, not just their symptoms. “My journey both personally and professionally has shown me that healing is not one-size-fits-all. It’s individualized. And it’s the reason I’m so passionate about the integrative, functional approach I practice today.” Let’s meet Ashley Armstrong, MSEd, CPT, N1-NC, nutritionist and personal trainer. A mother of two teens and after two decades in the field, Ashley shares, “I have worked with hundreds of clients, many of whom struggle to find consistency in their healthy habits and lifestyle. Most unhealthy people have an ‘all or nothing’ mentality. Perfect choices aren’t sustainable and regular “worst” choices will snowball into massive health complications. Small, daily, tedious, unsexy healthy choices compounded over time will produce momentum and massive lasting results. I am an expert at habit formation, mindset shifting and creating consistency in a healthy relationship to food and exercise. Personally, I had much success getting my clients to feel confident, strong and fit in the gym setting but body transformation would not come unless they shifted their nutrition. Sleep, stress and water intake are also major factors in physical performance, weight loss and recovery. Once I turned 40 years old, the things that used to work for me to maintain my weight and fitness didn’t work anymore. I had to shift some things, and learn my body all over again. I love helping women through peri-menopause and menopause to find their optimal health as they age gracefully.” What would a typical appointment at Wellness Restored look like?

You will book with us online. We will contact you to set up an appointment in office and send you a patient intake form. We office out of Restore Behavioral Health Center, in the West building. We prefer to study any lab work you’ve had done ahead of time. You’ll wait less than a minute in our beautiful waiting room and we’ll offer you herbal tea in our cozy office. We will ask a lot of questions, listen to your concerns, consult your medication, supplements, environment, lifestyle and lab work to create a full picture of your health. Then we will collaborate to find a root cause of what’s making you feel less than optimal. At the heart of what we do is empowerment. We want patients to know they have a voice, a choice, and a real ability to participate in their own healing. Our hope is to help people cut through the overwhelming noise of the wellness world, social media and create realistic, approachable, personalized plans that truly serve them. Healing is not one-size-fits-all. It’s individualized. And it’s the reason we’re so passionate about the integrative, functional approach we practice today. Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1,

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
