A recent sports and/or academic highlight? In October, Southmoore won the 6A State Championship for Fastpitch which is one of the best days that I will remember forever. We were all so locked in & competed our best all season to finish strong with the championship.

A brief bio including your parents’ names, the sports you play, and your personal interests? My father is Joseph Burnett, an OKC Police Investigator in Sex Crimes Division & one of my coaches on my travel ball team Epic National 2026. My mother is Kristen Burnett, a Staff Analyst at Boeing. I’ve played Fastpitch since 8U competitively on various travel teams. When I have some free time, I really enjoy painting, drawing, & relaxing by watching classic 80’s and 90’s movies w/my mom.

Tell us how you manage to balance life, school, and sports? The toughest part about being a successful, motivated student athlete is prioritizing the student part while not missing games, practices, work-outs, or lessons. I make sure I find time to study, and I make a lot of flash cards to help me study.

Finally your future plans such as the college you’re going to attend and the career you’re going to pursue? My goal is to attend a D1 University on a fastpitch scholarship. I have several colleges watching me at games and on social media. I will probably study History or Education, and I want to be a college professor, possibly coaching a Fastpitch team in the future because I really love the game.

A recent sports and/or academic highlight? My recent sports highlight is taking home gold at the Missouri Adidas Nationals in the weight class of 150 pounds. I am also the state Greco champion at 150 pounds.

A brief bio including your parents’ names, the sports you play and your personal interests? My parents’ names are Thomas and Teresa Ivey, the sports I am involved in are wrestling, boxing, and jujitsu. My personal interests are spending time with my huge family and girlfriend, sparring with my older brothers and friends, wrestling, and riding my dirt bike.

Tell us how you manage to balance life, school, and sports? I manage my life with help from my parents and coaches. Between church, school, wrestling, and life, I stay pretty busy, but staying on a schedule keeps everything from being straight chaos.

Finally your future plans such as the college you’re going to attend and the career you’re going to pursue? For my future plans, I have many interests. After high-school I hope to wrestle for Oklahoma University and earn a degree in business. Once I graduate, I will continue to pursue my passion for entrepreneurship.

If there's a downside to writing for a magazine (as opposed to a newspaper or social media, for example), it's the lead time required. As I write this, it's still the early days of November; Halloween is just over and Thanksgiving is still weeks away. I haven't yet had a chance to really get immersed in the holiday spirit, but pulling together the December (Holiday & Giving) issue helped move me in that direction! There's no shortage of things to do across the metro area in the way of holiday fun, ranging from educational events at the Sam Noble Museum to tree lightings and craft fairs. Inside, you'll read about how seriously the New Urbanism community of Selah takes the spirit of Christmas. Nothing exemplifies this more than the spectacular 385,000 light display that adorns the entry district and its buildings, which are open to the public to view throughout the month. You also won't want to miss Selah's "Christmas Vacation Kickoff," scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, starting at 4 p.m. Another event that's guaranteed to help get you in the spirits is the Sooner Theatre's live production of Seussical. Related story on p. 40. Have babies and/or children on your holiday shopping list? For a great selection of stuffed animals, educational toys and games, name-brand clothing/accessories, and much more, you'll want to visit Kidoodles in Norman. Yes, the beloved store, which closed its doors earlier this year to the dismay of many loyal shoppers, has reopened under new ownership in Carriage Plaza. They'll even do the gift wrapping for you! I know your to-do list is at least as long as mine, so I won't spend time here outlining the other entertaining and informative articles you'll find inside this issue, but I think it'll be worth your time to carve out a little time to set aside your shopping and baking and whatever to learn what's shaking in our community this holiday season. In closing, publisher Jimmy Darden and I remind you to "shop local" when possible and to make sure and give generously to one or more of the incredible nonprofits that help out our neighbors in so many ways. If charitable giving is an important part of your budget, it’s good to occasionally take a step back and reevaluate your giving strategy. Doing so can help ensure your money is used efficiently and effectively by the organizations you choose to support. Here are some steps to get you started: Step 1: Clarify your own values and preferences. Before you reach for your checkbook, ask yourself a few questions. What causes are important to you? Is there a particular demographic or group of people you would like to support? Would you prefer to give to a local, regional, national or global organization? As a donor, what do you hope to see in the organization’s leadership or structure? Doing so can help you zero in on the charities that align with your personal values, making your donation even more meaningful. Step 2: Consider each organization’s mission. Once you have determined which organizations meet your criteria, research each charity to make sure their programs, mission and goals match your expectations. Consider meeting with an executive or local leader to hear about the charity’s strategy and their impact on the community first-hand. During the meeting, ask about the organization’s short- and long-term goals as well as how they measure success. You want to be sure that the charity is making progress toward achieving its goals. Step 3: Investigate each charitable organization’s financial health. Look into how each donation is used and what percentage of the money goes directly to the cause. Fundraising and

administrative expenses help the charity do its work; however, you should be cautious about organizations with higher overhead costs. Ask the charity for a copy of their most recent annual report and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 990. These forms outline the charity’s budget allocation and financial plans, and can provide you with insight into how your money is used to make the intended impact. If you’d like an objective perspective on a charity’s financial health, fundraising practices, day-to-day efficiency and accountability standards, look at how watchdog groups evaluate the organization. BBB Wise Giving Alliance (give.org), GuideStar (guidestar.org) and Charity Navigator (charitynavigator.org) are several national groups that offer unbiased evaluations. Step 4: Make giving part of your financial plan. As you figure out your donation strategy, consider meeting with a financial planner or tax advisor who can help you select the most appropriate donation method for your financial situation. These professionals can also work with you to create a strategy for ongoing contributions or to make giving part of your legacy. Keep in mind that there may be legal or tax considerations, depending on the amount and form of your donation (i.e., check, investment donation, etc.). By taking the time to thoroughly evaluate charitable organizations, you’ll give yourself the peace of mind that your money is being used wisely, effectively and for the purposes you intended.

Ask just about any longtime Norman resident to name their favorite place locally to buy toys and educational games for children—while they were a child themselves or as a parent, grandparent or other looking for great gifts for birthdays and Christmas—and chances are they will all come up with the same answer: Kidoodles. As a child, my niece, now in her 30s, loved visiting the store, then located in Brookhaven Village. She especially loved the child-sized door, located at the entranceway next to the standard-sized door. So it was natural that, years later, she’d introduce her own son to Kidoodles, which had been located at its longtime site on the north side of Main Street at “the bend,” where it shared a space with Copelin’s Office Center. Bonus: it retained the child-sized door! When Kidoodles and Copelin’s announced their closing in the spring of 2023, the news was met with a great feeling of loss far and wide. For loyal Copelin’s customers, this marked the end of a nearly 40-year successful business run, as Ed Copelin looked forward to enjoying his well-deserved retirement. But what about the beloved toy store? Was it the end of the line for this iconic business?

For a while, things looked grim. Behind the scenes, however, a couple was considering a longtime dream involving the beloved store. Explains Stephanie O’Hara: “Our family has been Kidoodles customers since 2008, when our first son was born. After a sixyear infertility battle, we welcomed our girl/boy twins in 2015, who became Kidoodles fanatics. Over the years, I would joke with Jennifer Brooks, the manager of Kidoodles—to “put my name in the hat” to purchase the store when the Copelins decided to retire. “That phone call came this past January! My husband, Dirk, and I met the Copelins for coffee, and the rest is history. The Copelins closed Kidoodles’ doors in May of this year, and we purchased it from them that same month, with one stipulation: that Jennifer Nelson, their manager of 23 years, would come with us. (She said yes!)” When the announcement was made in the local media that Kidoodles was re-opening—and only a mile or so west of its previous location—our family rejoiced, as, I’m sure, did many others in Norman and the surrounding communities. The O’Haras chose to locate Kidoodles in Norman’s Carriage Plaza which, Stephanie observed, is composed of all-women-

owned businesses. And to the delight of children, they brought the little door with them! “Thousands and thousands of children (and adults) have walked through that little door over the last four decades—it truly is a nostalgic icon in Norman,” Stephanie noted. Renovations on the space were started in June, and Stephanie and Jennifer went to market and started purchasing items for the store. “It has been so fun and incredibly special to watch not only young customers walk through the little door, but also those who visited the store in the 1980s and 1990s and are now grown, many with children of their own,” Stephanie said. “We are Norman’s ONLY toy store and children’s boutique in a 30-plus-mile radius,” she added. “There is NO other store like this in Oklahoma—one that carries kids’ toys, books and clothing.” In addition to just-for-fun and educational toys and plush items, Kidoodles sells books, and clothing and accessories, for ages 4-16. “We take pride in procuring many brands that are women-owned, items that are made in the USA, and or are minority-owned or sustainable/green,” she noted, with pride.

Kidoodles also offers birthday basket registries, and storytime sessions on Thursdays at 4 p.m. with Stephanie’s mother, “Nana Cotton,” 81, a retired schoolteacher and gifted storyteller. They also offer a free gift to shoppers who come in on their birthday. Stephanie loves seeing people come in who are brand-new to the Kidoodles experience. But they cherish the store’s loyal followers and, by way of enticing them into the new store, offer first-, second- and third-generation Kidoodles hats. Thanks to the installation of bubblegum-scented candles, the new store even smells like its predecessors. “The grandparents who are our customers are Kidoodles fanatics: they brought their children through the little door years ago, and now they’re bringing their grandchildren!” Stephanie invites Lifestyle readers to “come by and say hello.” Borrowing the words of Rick to Capt. Renault in the classic film, Casablanca, she declares, “This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!”

Promoting Health & Wellbeing Through Travel Travel has always played an important role in Jaime Conover’s life. Growing up with military parents, exploring different places defined her young life. Lucas Ross comes into living rooms across the state as a member of Freedom 43’s Rise and Shine show. Kerri Brackin has performed on Broadway and around the world in national and international tours of Broadway productions. Both are slated to perform at The Sooner Theatre this month in Seussical The Musical. I recently sat down with them to get to know them better.

WHEN/WHERE DID YOU START PERFORMING? LUCAS: While my hometown of Minco, Oklahoma, didn’t have a theatre program, I found a way to perform between talent shows under Friday night lights as the Minco Bulldog Mascot. It was tough getting comedy to translate through 6” of fake dog fur. By the time I could drive, I traveled up to OKC, performing at Jewel Box Theatre under the direction of Chuck Tweed. He cast me as the comic relief (Hugo Peabody in Bye Bye Birdie)—and it stuck! KERRI: I started performing before I started walking and talking! I think my mother put me in

dance class before I was 2 and I think I sang my first solo, as a little clown to a song called “How Would You Like to Be...,” when I was 3. I loved it all from the very beginning and, for me, there was and is something just so joyful and life-giving about performing. I love seeing audience members walk out smiling after a show. You feel like you brightened someone’s day, and that is a great feeling. My first professional performance was at Lyric Theatre in OKC...in Annie, of course!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE ROLE OR SHOW TO PERFORM? LUCAS: My first show with Sooner Theatre was the Steve Martin role in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I have been so inspired by Martin’s comedy and music over the years; this was a true honor and so much fun with the great Don Taylor! Adult Ralphie in the Sooner’s A Christmas Story is a close second! KERRI: My favorite show to perform was Hairspray. I am so very grateful to have gotten the opportunity to perform in the national and international tours of that beautiful show. Hairspray was my first big job after moving to The Big Apple after college. Penny Pingleton has to be one of my favorite roles ever!

WHAT DOES SOMEONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THEATRE NEED TO DO TO PREPARE? LUCAS: Love performing above all. That motivates you to study. Whether this is studying by watching others perform, taking classes or simply being active in any of the many roles of the stage, knowing what goes on behind the scenes, prepping a show, all the not-so-glorious aspects

of clean-up, are so important. Unmotivated kindness goes a long way, too. Also, to quote Steve Martin, “Be so good they can’t ignore you!” KERRI: In my opinion, someone looking to pursue a career in theatre needs to, first, REALLY want it! It’s a hard but rewarding industry. You must have a thick skin...there is lots of rejection and you have to remember...it’s not because you are not talented or wonderful; you just aren’t what the folks behind the table need in that moment on that day for that show! Keep on keeping on! Be diligent and work hard, but something else I find important is to have a life outside of theatre and outside of showbiz. You will go nuts if you don’t. I think that experience in other areas of life makes you a better performer, too.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITION? LUCAS: Watching The Muppet Christmas Carol and eating some of my mom’s amazing cranberry bread! KERRI: My favorite holiday tradition, currently, is the annual “Christmas lights car tour plus peppermint milkshakes” with my spectacularly fun and fabulous Aunt Jenn, Uncle Lewis and Great-Grandma Honey. blast! Favorite holiday tradition from years past would be putting up Christmas decorations with my mom. Our ornaments and decorations pretty much all had meaning and history, purchased on trips or passed down through generations, and we had such good times getting the boxes out every year and reminiscing about our holiday trinkets. It was so simple, but so special. My mom had a way of making everything magical.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE SOONER THEATRE STAGE AND WHAT PULLS YOU BACK FOR MORE? LUCAS: This will be the fourth time I have been invited to be part of a Sooner Theatre show. Other than Jennifer Baker physically pulling me back, I enjoy the community this theatre has created. It’s a legendary building with an amazing history, but the wonderful people who continue to tell stories are what make a theatre succeed. KERRI: I’ve been lucky enough to have been on The Sooner Theatre stage at least five times. I was in one of the very first Sooner Stage performances...Oklahoma! (in concert), and I’ve also done a couple NYE performances and most recently, was in Sister Act. I loved being in that show with that group of lovely people! I’m so excited to get to be a part of Seussical. I just can’t wait! This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
