As a child, I always looked forward to summer. It meant a break from school and homework, warm evenings chasing lightning bugs, listening for the musical sound of ice cream trucks, and visits with my family to Westwood (much smaller in those days) or the lake. It also meant standing in front of the deliciously cool water window air conditioner at home after working up a sweat outdoors. Now, to be honest, I'd move north during the months of June through August if I had the money to do so. Since I don't, I'm just grateful for air conditioning. And speaking of hot...in Local Experiences this month, we've compiled a listing of go-to spots in the area where you can go for cold treats, including ice cream, custard and snow cones. (See related photo, above.) August is our Kids & Pets issue. Under this category, we have several stories, including one on a mobile canine spa and grooming company serving pampered pooches in the OKC and Tulsa areas. Another spotlights a young, up-and-coming band that plays a mix of Indie Pop and Psychedelic Pop. "Some of it’s catchy and 'dancey' but it also can get really weird, with vocoders, noise solos and groan back scratchers," says lead singer and guitarist Liam Hosty, the son of well-known local musical artist Mike Hosty. INTRODUCING WET MUSCLES YOUNG INDIE AND PSYCHEDELIC POP BAND’S MUSIC CAN BE CATCHY AND ‘DANCY’ BUT ALSO EXPERIMENTAL

Many music aficionados in the area are familiar with local musical artist Mike Hosty. I recently discovered another Hosty who’s making his name on the local scene and beyond. Liam Hosty, 18, is the son of Mike and Kellie DeHaven Hosty. A 2022 Norman North graduate who plans to attend the University of Oklahoma this fall, Liam is lead singer and guitarist of the local band Wet Muscles.

.WHEN DID YOU FIRST START PERFORMING? I started performing in 2021 officially with my own music. Because of the pandemic I wasn’t able to play live and had to wait until everything calmed down. I released my first album, The Days Are Just Packed, in peak pandemic, so playing those songs live wasn’t an option. I had done more informal performance type stuff in school or playing with my dad, but this was the start on my own. Wet Muscles played our first show in April of 2021. Honestly, what really got me going was writing songs I had confidence in. A lot of people have the ability, but if you’re not confident, it just won’t translate. A lot of my early songs are bad, but it took that to get where I am.

LIAM HOST Y, WET MUSCLES

I play guitar and sing in Wet Muscles, but can also play piano/keyboards, bass and drums. Drums was the first instrument I learned how to play. The drum set my dad got me from Norman Music when I was like 4 o 5 is the same one we record on today. The name, Wet Muscles, came from a joke we had about what a terrible band name would be, and it just kind of stuck. There are four of us in the band. I play guitar and sing lead. Aiden “Amsco” Wilson, 18, plays bass. We call him The Machine. Janice Koo, 18, plays keys, sings lead, plays synthesizer and various other electronic noises, and Ryan Hesselroth, 17, plays drums and sometimes triangle. All of them play their instruments differently than I would, so it’s super fun having that interplay between us. We’ve been playing together as a four piece for a little over a year now and we’ve really clicked with each other. I’ve known all of them forever, too. Our live shows now are pretty much down to a science. My girlfriend, Kennedy, is basically the “fifth muscle.” She helps with literally everything we do—I love her.

WHAT TOPICS DO YOU LIKE TO EXPLORE IN YOUR MUSIC? We play originals written solely by me, the band and I, or just another band member. In my songwriting I usually sing about the stuff that’s happening to me or around me.

My first two albums are basically a recount of things happening while writing. They explore situations and people from my sophomore and junior years of high school, but with a subtlety that makes the song appealing to others. I love songs that are very event- or situation-driven and are just a bunch of details about one time or place. My bandmates and I are close so often that what I might be writing about is also something someone else might want to write about—just because we experienced it together. It’s a key part of the band.

WHAT SERVES AS INSPIRATION FOR YOU? A lot comes from what is happening to me. Even if it’s something small, I can usually dig around and find a song in it. I love to tie seemingly random topics to something that is going on in my life. You’ll see this a lot on the upcoming album, and it’s a pretty big characteristic of our songwriting style beyond my solo music.

WHERE DO YOU PERFORM? We love to play Norman Music Fest. We’ve played twice, once in 2021 at the Soundchecks Series they did because of NMF 2021 being canceled, and recently at the 2022 Music Fest in April. It’s always great playing for people along with bands we love.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR MUSIC AND/OR LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU AND THE BAND? My music is on all streaming platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, etc.) but can be purchased directly on Bandcamp! The upcoming Wet Muscles album will also be available on streaming. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? LONG-TERM GOALS? Right now, I’m working on finishing the Wet Muscles debut album. It’s been a long time coming and we’ve been working on it for over a year now. We’ve just been playing together for so long that it definitely sounds like us. After that comes out, we’ll really get started on shows again. Long-term, I’m just hoping to get to a place where I’m able to have music play a big role in my life while also having stability.

Ted Boehm, M.D. Deep Roots, Meaningful Connections ARTICLE BY BROOKE BARNETT

Ortho Central’s Dr. Ted Boehm may not have been “Sooner born,” but he is quick to assure you that the rest of the familiar adage holds true—he certainly considers himself “Sooner bred” into a community that now holds an important place in his heart. Growing up in a military family, Boehm moved frequently throughout his childhood before settling in Norman to attend the University of Oklahoma. He knew right away that the community was special, and this feeling only grew when he met his future wife, Stephanie, during his undergraduate years. “We met because we were both members of the Pride of Oklahoma as undergraduates,” Boehm explains. “Her family has owned land in Norman since the Land Run, and she grew up in an historic home in Norman’s original township. Our kids are now the fourth generation of the family to attend Norman High School. Stephanie is about as Norman as she can get!” Knowing Stephanie’s strong family ties to Norman, Boehm stayed in Oklahoma to earn his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, and his medical fellowship and residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The couple has now been married for more than 20 years, and their daughter Lilly will be a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma, while son Ryan will be a freshman at Norman High School this fall. These connections serve to strengthen the deep roots that Boehm has established in the community over the past two decades.

“Norman is truly great, and the No. 1 reason is because of the people. I have a pretty good perspective, since I have lived all over the country, and I just really enjoy the way it is here,” Boehm adds. “It’s wonderful to have a community with a small-town feel, without being a small town. We are able to give our children all the experiences that we want them to have. It’s so incredible that they can grow up in the same place as their parents, grandparents and great grandparents.” Boehm specializes in sports medicine and treats patients from Ortho Central’s Norman and Midwest City offices. He focuses on injuries of the ligaments, joints and muscles, as well as non-operative fracture care, stem cell injections, platelet-rich plasma injections and ultrasound guided injections. He also specializes in concussion management care and illnesses such as exercise-induced asthma. In addition to being board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, Boehm holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in sports medicine. “I love sports medicine, especially the population of people that I am able to serve,” Boehm says. “Since many of my patients are athletes, they are often highly motivated to get back to what they want to do, which makes my job much easier. They realize that they need to follow my treatment regimen to be able to get back to doing what they love. Sometimes, they are so motivated that I struggle to rein them in and to get them to take the time truly needed to heal.” Boehm treats patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics with non-operative injuries, which is approximately 80% of orthopedic injuries. He focuses on providing the

type of care that he would want to receive and to make sure that his patients understand both their injury and the treatment that they are receiving. “I try to educate my patients and I spend a lot of time going over X-rays with them, taking extra care to really explain and discuss,” he emphasizes. “I spend the time that I need to to help that patient to understand what’s going on with them. The more they understand, the more they can help with their care.” Boehm serves as the team physician for Norman Public Schools, and is the head team physician for Norman High School. He also has been treating OU students, faculty and staff with musculoskeletal injuries and other sports medicine needs at Goddard Health Center since 2009. “It’s a really neat position to be in, since I have covered Norman High athletes since 2003,” he explains. “I’ve gotten to know so many athletes and their families. It’s definitely a family affair, and I am honored that so many parents feel comfortable bringing their kids to see me. WHEN SHOULD CHILDREN CONSULT AN ORTHODONTIST? Streight encourages a preventive, proactive approach. He says 7 is a good age to schedule a check-up because some children may need some form of early treatment. It is important to focus on preventive care and catch problems early; that way, it is possible to treat issues at the right time. There are treatments even before permanent teeth come in, so as early as second grade, growth modification plans can be discussed. Middle school students and teens have treatment options. The doctors ensure that patients are aware of their options, which may include braces, retainers and aligners, and in fact, many teens qualify for aligners. Craig & Streight Orthodontics is the largest aligner provider in the state for teens.

ABOUT THE ORTHODONTISTS Dr. Craig grew up in Laverne and Moore. Following in her mother’s footsteps, who worked in the dental field, Craig entered the field when she was only 16. Dr. Streight grew up in Norman, and he remembers the experience of having braces at the age of 12. It was his own orthodontist, Dr. Mack L. Rose, who encouraged young Streight to grow up and be an orthodontist, and that’s exactly what he did. He completed dental school at the OU College of Dentistry and went on to earn his master’s of dental science degree in orthodontics with a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. In her paintings, Chickasaw and Muscogee artist Danielle Fixico uses a combination of symbols and materials from her southeastern heritage to raise awareness of women’s issues in First American communities. In a profile by the Chickasaw Nation, she expressed her belief that education is vital for a successful education and noted that her career goal is to become a professor in the College of the Muscogee Nation, where she will work to inspire her students to change the world and make it a better place for later generations. Works by Danielle, currently a second-year master of fine arts candidate in painting at the University of Oklahoma, and three other First American women from various tribes— all of whom are native to Oklahoma—are currently featured in a compelling exhibition at Exhibit C Gallery, located in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district.

JOYCE NEVAQUAYA-HARRIS As a young girl, Joyce, who is enrolled with the Comanche Nation and is a descendant of the Chickasaw, Choctaw and Crow Nations, was surrounded by art and artists, including her late father, the renowned Doc Tate Nevaquaya, a self-taught artist and native flute revivalist. Joyce said that she often thinks of her dad when immersed in her art and is drawn to the use of color, often painting subjects and designs on a single canvas.

NATALIE MILLER Best known for her work with acrylics, Natalie’svibrant use of color on canvas explores linear abstractions, bold color combinations and a playful colliding of geometric forms. Her innate ability to manage color tone stems from more than a decade of working professionally in graphic and textile design. Her visual journey connects her past with her present, drawing from early and contemporary textiles, like ribbon skirts, and is inspired by her natural attraction to saturated colors. Natalie is a Chickasaw artist and an alumna of Oklahoma Christian University.

AMBER L. DUBOISE-SHEPHERD Depicting experiences from her daily life, Amber’s drawings and paintings are her interpretation of the world around her as seen through the lens of her First American heritage and traditions. With a blend of different First American cultures, including Navajo, Sac and Fox and Prairie Band Potawatomi, her parents taught Amber and her siblings the family’s tribal cultures and spiritual ways. She now draws upon this in her art using oils as well as pen and ink to bridge traditional First American subjects with contemporary styles. Amber is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and is a member of the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, where she was a Spotlight Artist in 2021.

In 1971, Peter Townshend’s song “Going Mobile”— celebrating freedom and traveling the open road— debuted on The Who’s album, Who’s Next. Forty-six years later, Laney Dicksion celebrated going mobile when she launched Furst Class Canine Mobile Grooming Salon and Spa, LLC, which serves Oklahoma City and its surrounding communities, from Goldsby to Edmond/Arcadia and most everywhere along the I35 corridor, as well as the Greater Tulsa Area from Broken Arrow and Bixby to Owasso. “Interestingly enough,” she said, “we have the largest service area in the state at this time.” Laney chose to go mobile for several reasons. “Personally, I have always preferred ‘express’ type services for the comfort of my clients. Doggies prefer to be close to home and their ‘hoomans’ and definitely don’t enjoy being away for long periods of time,” she said. “I also needed flexibility for my own children, as it’s a high priority for us as a family to be as present as possible for school pickup and drop-off and extracurricular activities,” she added. “Mobile solved all these needs. My pups could have my undivided attention and care close to home, and I could manage my schedule efficiently for my family.” Her choice has proven to be a sound one. “The pups are SO happy and much more content with private one-on-one care, the hoomans are pleased by how convenient the service is and how happy their doggies are, and our stylists love being mobile!” she said. Laney describes Furst Class Canine as “a luxury, all inclusive, one-on-one mobile pet styling service” in which “each pet receives customized care tailored to their individual needs without being limited to certain packages or offerings.” “Nose to tail, big or small, we literally do it all—every time, without question,” Laney said. “Furst Class stylists are all highly skilled stylists who can provide any style requested with ease and who pride themselves on being thorough and detailed professionals.”

Furst Class bath services start at $90 while their haircut/groom services start at $115 and go up based on breed, size and service. “There are many mobile grooming services in Oklahoma, as well as storefront salons. However, we believe there is a groomer for every dog and a dog for every groomer. Our niche tends to be for clients wanting high-level grooming work and/or the convenience and attention of mobile,” Laney explains. “What truly sets Furst Class Canine apart, though, is our amazing team of stylists,” she added. “We have an amazingly talented and experienced team of stylists who can provide top-level service regardless of the request. From senior care to fancy flair, they can do it all! And we’re pretty proud of ‘em, if you couldn’t tell. There are simply not enough ways to brag on our team!” Describing her own upbringing as tough (she was raised by a single mother with addiction issues), Laney says her story has parallels to that of Cinderella. “I was lucky to have always had wonderful educators who looked out for me and basically raised me; it helps I was a bit of a nerd,” she said, laughing. “When I was 13, I stumbled into a groom shop looking for summer work and started out sweeping floors and cleaning cages. The rest, as they say, is history. “But I’m not quite done yet accomplishing more and growing this industry,” she continued. “I am a fervent advocate for continuing education, improving customer contact and relations, and stabilizing pricing and quality in the industry nationwide.” Furst Class Canine requires proof of vaccination but has few other limitations. Picture this. You are in elementary school, sitting in the cafeteria one spring day. You look up and see what appears to be a giant standing right in front of you: 6 feet 5 inches tall, 259 pounds, very muscular, blonde hair. If it wasn’t for his equally big smile, you would be too scared to talk. Then he says hello. And so begins the adventure at Scott Lake Elementary in Miami Gardens, Florida, for several students and Sooner football players, including sophomore defensive end Ethan Downs. And while the elementary students were surprised to meet this Sooner giant, it was normal for Downs. “My parents raised us with a deep faith,” Ethan said. “The Golden Rule was so important in our family and how we interacted with each other and others outside of our family. I understand the impact student-athletes can have, especially on younger kids. We can make a huge impression and I think we have to be all in for them when we are with them.” Ethan had experienced the impact he could have on people as a middle school student. Like the elementary kids, Ethan started the conversation with a young man who was battling cancer. They became great friends, going to camps together and spending the night at each other’s house— being ordinary friends. “I had helped with younger kids at football camp in Weatherford and had learned it was so important that, when you hang out with younger kids, you need to be who you are, to be as transparent as possible. We all have choices when we interact with others; I choose to be transparent.”

That approach extended to others Ethan interacted with during the three days at the school. Set up through Coach Brent Venable’s newly introduced S.O.U.L. (Serving Our Uncommon Legacy) program, former OU football standout and a director in the SOUL program, Josh Norman, contacted close friend and former Sooner track All-American Moses Washington, who lives in Miami, to ask for help finding an elementary school. His older sister, Bridget McKinney, is the principal of Scott Lake and the pieces fell into place that allowed Scott Lake to become the first school the SOUL program visited. The principal and her teachers got a first-hand look at Ethan’s approach. She and the teachers had set up a special room for the football players to eat lunch in, away from the noise of an elementary cafeteria. Ethan saw the setup and immediately asked McKinney for a regular food tray, like the students had. He explained to her that he wanted the kids to get to know him, and that he wanted to stand in line like them and eat what they ate. Transparency lesson #2.

“I wanted to impact these kids and to do that, I needed to be with the kids,” Ethan explained. “I didn’t want to hide away from them. I needed to be there for them. They asked so many questions. They had so much energy and excitement. They kept touching me to see if I was real. They were so full of life and so innocent. It was extremely hard to leave after our time at the school was over. “The SOUL program gives us the opportunity to serve and grow. I am relishing those opportunities. This coaching staff is talking about culture, tradition, character and chemistry. They hold each other accountable, and the players are in the middle of that process. We see it and learn how to do it ourselves.” Ethan has also added more to his approach to life. “The older I get, the more I understand how important it is to be more childlike. A child doesn’t care about things we think are so important as adults. To be childlike is to be more innocent and to love those you interact with.” To the children in Miami Gardens who asked, Ethan Downs is very real.

Why is LIFE insurance so important? Let me help answer this question. Will your loved ones have the financial capability to survive without your income? As a mother of three, I knew early on that it would be important to provide for my family if something were to happen to me. As an insurance agent and daughter of a 30-year agent, I can tell you that I am most passionate about life insurance, just as my mother was. I’ve seen firsthand how it can change lives in the event of a loved one’s passing. The grieving process is overwhelming enough, so having one less thing to worry about is a gift.
