Have you come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax this summer? In Oklahoma, the heat and humidity make outings on or near the water popular. We've listed some of those places in Local Experiences. But summer can also be a time to enjoy a slower pace and the simple joys of living. At dusk, my niece's 5-year-old loves catching (and releasing) lightning bugs, as I did many years ago. Many days, you'll find us all cooling off at one of the many splash pads across the metro. The OKC Zoo is another favorite place to go; thank goodness for the misting stations they've installed in recent years! Summer is also a time for backyard barbecues with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream or fro-yo on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. I hope you'll take some time out to read this issue. I think you'll especially enjoy the piece on a local veterinarian who is training, mind and body, to compete this summer in a grueling 100-mile, 30-hour trail run in Colorado. Don't forget to pack the sunscreen (and insect repellant) before heading out for your summer adventures, and have fun!

If you’re caring for a grandparent, parent, spouse or other adult family member with physical or other impairments, you know how tough it can be. You want the best for your loved one—but caring for them may leave you with little time for other members of your family, for work—or even for yourself. And if you burn out, then what? The Full Circle Adult Day Center staff understand both the needs of the caretaker and their charges, including those who might benefit from daily socialization; need assistance with personal care; are experiencing memory loss or from feelings of loneliness, isolation or depression; or have physical impairments. “We would like to make more people aware of one of the best-kept secrets in the area in order to serve more families,” said Full Circle Executive Director Kim Zaman, M.H.R., who offered a list of some of the common reasons given for signing family members up for their services: • Dad’s health concerns are keeping him from enjoying life. • Mom is becoming so isolated. She does not get out much and rarely spends time with her friends. • Mom doesn’t seem to be eating right or taking her medications properly. • My husband spends most his days watching TV and napping. Then, he does not sleep well at night. • I worry about my father when I’m at work and he’s home alone. • Grandma is not getting enough exercise and has been falling at home. • Grandpa had a stroke and needs help while he recuperates. • Caregiving is wearing me out, and I don’t know where to turn for help. Established in 1995, Full Circle (FullCircleOK.org) relocated into an over 6,100-square-foot facility at 4223 28th Ave. NW in February 2019; it has been the only licensed adult day center in Norman for the past 26 years. Kim invited City Lifestyle readers to attend a special community holiday event on Dec. 3. “It’s centered on the classic holiday favorite It’s a Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, where George Bailey (Stewart) helps an angel earn his wings. Local Veterinarian Preparing for Grueling 100-mile, 30-hour Trail Run

They call it the Race Across the Sky. This 100-mile, 30-hour trail run, held annually in August, beginning and ending in the small, former mining town of Leadville, Colorado, has contestants battling heat and humidity, thin air and elevations of 9,200 to 12,600 feet to reach the finish line. Last year, area veterinarian Jeff Boyer—no stranger to endurance sports—won a lottery draw to compete in the prestigious competition. He trained hard—really hard—and lost. “I failed to make the 100 miles last year in the allotted time, so that results in a DNF, which in the ultra-running scene is a ‘did not finish’! I did make it 50 miles, but who really cares about that when all it says is DNF?! I struggled with the terrain, the altitude, my body and my mind. It was much more difficult than expected.” Jeff, who started running as a means of reducing stress and organize his thoughts during veterinary school about two decades ago, thought he was well-prepared for the race. He has run marathons in Oklahoma City and has even traveled to Chicago and Dallas for a couple. “I also love to run on vacation as a way of getting to know the area I am visiting,” he said. “I have participated in many triathlons, from local sprints all the way up to Ironman distance, and have completed Ironman races in Tulsa, Boulder and Nashville.”

Asked about his motivation for running these super-endurance-testing competition, he replied, “Determination, yes; stubbornness and curiosity as well, I think. I’m always wondering how my body will react when I try to put it through what seems like more than it can handle.” Jeff struggled with his non-finish for a while in the Leadville 100 (the race’s real name) afterward. “I had invested so much, yet still come up short, and I seemed to crumble when it got tough,” he admitted. “I couldn’t remember the last time I failed at something I really wanted to do. I worried that my best years were actually behind me, as I had been told by many people.

“But it (the failure) was just what I needed,” he continued. “I went back to the drawing board. I changed my training to include more strength and power to go up the mountains. I changed my approach to the altitude. I’m headed up to train on the course this June to see how my body reacts again. I’ve adjusted my nutrition, both daily to reduce my weight and also during my runs, to help ease my digestion and sustain my energy. I’m training my mind by reading, visualization and learning from other successful Leadville finishers. I will show up this year stronger, more prepared, rested and ready for the 30 hours of testing that the Rocky Mountains will offer.

“And should I fail again or succeed in finishing the 100 miles through the Rockies,” Jeff said, “I will know that my life is full of ups and downs, and I have the ability to view any challenge through the lenses of possibility, improvement and potential. Should be an amazing day.” Jeff Boyer, D.V.M. THE ART OF TRAVEL During my world travels, I’ve had the privilege of assembling a priceless portfolio of paintings. No, not a physical collection of paintings. These “paintings”—or visual memories, if you will—are images lovingly gathered in my mind of the many and diverse people, places and things I have encountered on journeys taken on foot or by car, train, plane and/or ship. The Art of Travel—for traveling is an art— can be as beautiful as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa hanging in The Louvre in Paris or as confusing as a paint on a canvas blown on by a straw. Just in my 23 years of being in Oklahoma plus 21 in the travel industry, my mind’s portfolio has filled many pages. One of my most memorable trips was sailing around South America’s Cape Horn on a Celebrity Cruise Line ship. The 14-day journey started in Chili and ended in Buenos Aires. Sailing Cape Horn is both dangerous and exciting, with some comparing it to climbing Mount Everest. We visited museums and historical sites at all the ports of call prior to actually turning around the cape.

The paintings and pictures of the many shipwrecks that resulted in agony and defeat featured at these sites will make your head swim and give appreciation to the fact you were not sailing in a wooden ship. In one museum, we found a pencil sketching by Van Gogh. We were up at 4 a.m. to sit on the deck as we started the turn, our captain reminded us that there would be rough seas, and there were. I was so glad we were on a large passenger ship and equally as happy when the voyage around Cape Horn was completed safely. On another adventure quest, my husband, Bentley, and I stayed in the Bovey Castle in England. It was like walking back in time; what a beautiful picture this trip painted in my mind! We took a stroll along a hedge that was supposed to be two miles long; six or seven miles later, we went through a gate into a 14th-century cemetery. After reading headstones for over an hour, we left to have a pint at the Ring of Fire Tavern. Italy, especially Rome, will always be my most favorite place to visit; “paintings” from these visits probably fill a quarter of

We had the most wonderful guide, Armando, who arranged visits to the Four Major Papal Basilicas of Rome and a rare visit to the Pontifical North American College, where two young friends were studying to become priests. The timing of the trip was coordinated with the 2016 Holy Door Jubilee. We entered the Holy Door of St. Peters Basilicas early in the morning. Very few were in the building, so we were able to stand close to Michelangelo’s “Pieta.” Father Jack celebrated Mass for us at the Alter of St. John XXIII. The next Jubilee of The Holy Doors will be in 2025. Another beautiful setting that contributed to a moving memory. Another pleasant memory that is painted in my mind was implanted while traveling to New Zealand and Australia. While in New Zealand, we went out on an America’s Cup

racing yacht sponsored by Emeritus Airlines. I was able to take the helm of the yacht for a little while; the captain gave me a very awkward grin when I told him that my husband rarely let me drive the car with him in it. Another great adventure destination is Iceland. That country’s majestic horses are a beautiful breed native to the land of ice and fire. Unlike horses in our country, the slightly built horse is resilient to the elements and sleeps laying down. A tour I believe everyone should experience is the Beaches of Normandy. To this day, when I think of the events on the beaches, I get cold chills. One evening, as we stood near the Americans’ Cemetery as they lowered the flags and played taps, I swear you could feel the spirits of the men and women. CONTINUED >

We have sailed around the Hawaiian Islands on The Pride of America. While in Honolulu, I will never forget attending the dedication of the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. At the end of dedication, the announcer said, “You are dismissed, men of the USS Oklahoma”; taps were played, and young cadets walked away from behind the pillars at the memorial. It was breathtaking. When you go to Honolulu, be sure to plan time to visit Ford Island at Pearl Harbor, where the USS Oklahoma Memorial is located. Many of our trips include family tours or voyages. This past May, we spent a week in Kauai in a lovely condo on the beach with my daughter and her family. One day, we drove the Waimea Canyon scenic route; the next day we took a snorkeling catamaran tour to Na Pali coast. As I peruse my personal Arts of Travel memories, I feel blessed to have had the fortune to visit so many wonderful places around the world. Loveworks

Little Read Wagon aims to help close the literacy gap created by poverty and to share a love for books and reading with marginalized populations. The nonprofit allows children to choose their own new and used books from the organization’s book wagon. Children can volunteer with Little Read Wagon, hiding books for other children to discover, in area parks. Families can obtain books from the nonprofit that are already pre-packaged and ready to hide in area parks, or children can choose their own lightly used books and receive directions on how to package and hide them.

Loveworks programs are designed to empower the creativity, resourcefulness and potential within each student in an effort to develop their character, academic and leadership abilities, helping to ensure their future success. In addition to internships, Loveworks offers programs ranging from developing leadership skills to the culinary arts. Hundreds of volunteers and community professionals help facilitate initiatives that include experiential leadership projects, community outreach, personal character development, career components and mentorship. WildCare WildCare admits and treats over 7,500 wild animals (some 240 different species) annually. Most wild patients have been injured or orphaned because of human activity and increasing urbanization of their natural habitats. WildCare also cares for wild animals that have been struck by cars, attacked by cats and dogs, shot, injured from window collisions, poisoned, or injured in work accidents or from unnecessary trapping. WildCare is open to admit new patients 365 days a year. Volunteers over the age of 18 are needed in two different roles: as an animal care volunteer, whose duties include feedings, cleaning and maintenance, and volunteer transport assistants, who transport injured animals to WildCare for treatment. WildCare’s mission is to “provide people a place to bring native wildlife struggling to survive with the goal of releasing healthy individuals back to nature.” The organization is supported entirely by donations.

Wins and losses create one definition for success in collegiate athletics. At the University of Oklahoma, over the past few months, the success has been much higher, with one program reaching the national championship match for the first time in school history, another putting together a record-breaking campaign while challenging history, and finally a third that had to stage a never-before-seen comeback to repeat as national champions. This describes the spring of 2022 for women’s tennis, softball and women’s gymnastics at OU. Of special note: This year marked Patty Gasso's 10th straight Big 12 Coach of the Year honor and the 14th in her 28-year career.
