This month, we are honoring six men and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men working in a wide variety of careers—ranging from district judge to architecture professor—who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. Over the years that I've edited and written for this magazine, I've had the privilege of meeting many other men who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, and I am looking forward to learning about others in the future. Thank you for all your hard work! This issue also spotlights a restaurant that's got a great reputation for great food and exceptional service, as well as a dazzling array of whiskeys and cocktails, and a pharmacist who gives back to the community via a nonprofit that gives persons with developmental limitations a chance to gain dignity and purpose as well as a paycheck. Chris Phillips is passionate about his work as a pharmacist. A twin passion is helping persons with developmental limitations earn a paycheck while providing a chance to add dignity and purpose to their lives. In his daytime job as an owner and pharmacist at Chris’ Express Drug in south Oklahoma City, Chris works with a team of pharmacists and technicians to ensure they provide their clients with timely, top-tier service. I caught up with this busy individual recently to ask him about his involvement with the Work Activity Center (WACOK.com) in Moore.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE NONPROFIT? Beverly Young, the executive director of Work Activity Center, approached me to participate with the WAC as a board member. I accepted a board member position in 2015. In 2020 I accepted a position as vice president of the board and soon after accepted the position of president of the board.

And we welcome fundraisers honoring the WAC. It’s important for our members of the community to recognize the role that the WAC plays in the community for an underappreciated group. We would really love a grant to help fund the center.

WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THIS ORGANIZATION?

WE’D ALSO LIKE TO HEAR SOME ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

I got involved so that I could give back to the community that I live and work in. I chose the WAC because it represented an area that I have a passion for, which is adults with developmental limitations. I felt, and still feel today, that they are underrepresented and often pushed aside in society. At the WAC, some of the kindest and gentlest souls get the opportunity to work and earn a paycheck. The work is customized to their abilities. The WAC not only provides some income, but also some dignity and purpose, which may be the most important mission of the WAC. The WAC also provides some much-needed respite during the day for family members.

Chris’ Express Drug (ChrisExpressDrug.com), located at 12032 S. Western Ave., in Oklahoma City, is an independently owned pharmacy that has a smalltown feel but also has competitive hours and all the technology that a chain pharmacy would have, including an app and website for refill and texting when prescriptions are ready. We also offer full reviews of medication profiles to help our patients completely understand all the medication they are taking and the drug interactions/side effects that accompany their regimen. We offer lab testing for COVID, flu and strep. One of our most unique services is custom prescription compounding, where we help design a drug specifically for a patient and make it in our state-of-the-art lab. Our other very unique service is service itself. We staff our pharmacy with at least twice the technicians and pharmacists as our chain competitors so that patients can get quality assistance in a timely manner. Our primary focus is service.

INTRODUCING OUR 2022 MEN OF INFLUENCE DAVID L. BOECK As an associate professor of architecture at the University of Oklahoma, David L. Boeck focuses on housing issues, including aging in place and creating age-friendly and intergenerational communities. He has integrated Universal Design Principles into all studio projects, along with the concepts of sustainability. He brings a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to project development in his studio organization and project development, and his research has focused on the development of multidisciplinary tools for evaluating communities in terms of their age-friendliness. This process has included organizing community exhibits that incorporate multidisciplinary participatory action research, as well as dissemination methods. He is currently working to develop infill age-friendly and affordable housing units in Norman and has been appointed to various ad hoc citizen committees to oversee updates to the city’s ADA Transition Plan and to help develop an accessible housing policy in Norman. Dave has served on the Historic District Commission, the Planning Commission, the Mayor’s Environmental Concerns Committee, the Norman Senior Association and Union, as well as the Housing Authority and various long-range planning committees. He earned his bachelor of environmental design, bachelor of architecture and master of architecture degrees from the University of Oklahoma.

JUDGE ANTHONY BONNER Oklahoma County District Judge Anthony Bonner didn’t originally aim to be a lawyer, but he attended law school after one of his closest cousins went through the criminal justice system. Today, he serves as a district judge in Oklahoma County as well as a civil litigator and trial lawyer with hundreds of cases under his belt. After graduating OU Law, Anthony volunteered with the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s office and interned with a private law firm. He has also served as State Farm in-house counsel with Angela D. Ailles & Associates, Allstate

in-house counsel with the Law office of Steve Crittenden, and as an associate attorney with Cathcart & Dooley. In his mission to help those who struggle, Anthony served as staff counsel with Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, where he provided legal services to the indigent community in the greater Oklahoma City area, including assistance with VPOs, family and domestic disputes, landlord-tenant disputes, and social security benefits. He also fought for maintaining suitable housing for single mothers, obtaining VPOs for domestic violence victims, helping individuals secure Social Security benefits who had no other source of income, and working to increase equal access to justice to Oklahoma courts for everyone, but especially the disenfranchised. He is also involved with the Douglas High School Academy of Law & Public Safety, Guide Right/KappaLeague, Youth Builders Inc., Oklahoma Inner City Youth League and as an Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation little league coach.

LARRY HEIKKILA Larry Heikkila, who will be sworn in as Norman’s new mayor next month, worked for the City of Norman for 17 years, where he was employed as a street supervisor, personnel analyst and safety manager. He served for 26 years in the U.S. Navy, where he achieved the rank of E-9 and supervised and trained over 4,000 personnel. He spent four years in the Submarine Force and 22 years in the Naval Construction Force (SEABEES), eight of those as command master chief. He also worked for eight years in the University of Oklahoma Physical Plant. He and his wife of 45 years, Janet, have lived in Norman since 1978, and owned a small business on Main Street for four years. They have two grown children. Larry has given back to the community in a variety of ways, including as a chaplain and volunteer with Mission Norman and as an Oklahoma Jail and Prison Ministries chaplain reporting to the Cleveland County Detention Center. He has been a member of the American Legion Post 77 for 19 years, is an ordained deacon and Sunday school teacher at Bethel Baptist Church, and serves as treasurer for Gideons International, Norman camp.

MIKE HOANG Mike Hoang is a founder and current president of the Asian District Cultural Association in Oklahoma City and owner of KM Communities, a social enterprise merging residential real estate investment and community development. He was recognized as among the top up and coming leaders in Oklahoma City under 30 years old, becoming financially independent at the age of 31. After the Communist takeover of South Vietnam, Mike’s father led a perilous expedition of 70 people to escape the country. As refugees in a new world, they were not a stranger to poverty. Through sheer grit and hard work, Mike’s family thrived in the United States. As a keynote speaker, Mike uses his experience in business and his family’s journey as immigrants to the United States as a platform to influence and inspire others. He has been invited to speak around the country and has spoken to crowds upward of 25,000 people. Mike accounts his drive to succeed in business and leadership to his family’s Vietnamese heritage and his faith.

ALEXANDER JONES Dr. Alexander B. Jones is a board-certified urologist. He completed his undergraduate years at Oklahoma State University in 2010 and medical school at the OU College of Medicine in 2014. He then went on to complete his general surgery internship and residency in urologic surgery at the University of Missouri - Columbia in 2019 and moved to Norman to join Norman Urology Associates shortly thereafter. Alexander lives in Norman with his wife and high school sweetheart, Blair, and their children: daughter, Liv, 4; son, Rory, 1, and two Australian shepherds, Benson and Beau. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, biking and spending time outdoors. Currently, the couple is involved with a new nonprofit called Doing What I Can, whose mission is to enrich the lives of neighbors experiencing homelessness by

sharing a meal, some basic supplies and the love of Christ while meeting the neighbors where they are. Currently, DWIC serves 150-200 lunches to homeless neighbors every Sunday afternoon. While Alex and Blair help pack lunches, their children are decorate the lunch sacks.

H.E. GENE RAINBOLT In 1962, Gene Rainbolt acquired his first bank, the First American Bank in Purcell. In 1965 he acquired Federal National Bank in Shawnee, and in 1967 he and a group of investors commenced acquiring banks in Oklahoma, which led in 1985 to the formation of United Community Corp., the state’s first multi-bank holding company. In 1989, BancFirst was founded; it is now the largest state-chartered bank in Oklahoma, with assets of $9.6 billion and offices in 59 communities in Oklahoma, and Pegasus Bank, with three banking locations in Dallas. In 1999, Gene was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. He has received honorary doctorates from Oklahoma Baptist University, Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma Christian University. He has served in numerous civic, economic development, chamber of commerce, youth, medical, zoological, arts and banking organizations. One of his most recent projects is enhancing the entrepreneurial classes and entrepreneurial activities at universities in Oklahoma. Gene has served as president of the Oklahoma Bankers Association and chairman of the Academy for State Goals and the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce, and he is a former director of Leadership Oklahoma and the Great Expectations Foundation. He was a founding director of Calm Waters and has served on many other charitable boards. He also is a member of the Leadership Council of the OU Health Charles and Peggy Stephenson Oklahoma Cancer Center and recently served on the Board of Visitors of M.D. Anderson Foundation. He and his family are committed supporters of OU, the OU Health Sciences Center and Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

SERVICE RUNS IN MY BLOOD ARTICLE BY JESSICAROSE JOHNSON

Joining the military was always my choice, though service runs in my blood. Both my mother and my father served in the United States Air Force. I grew up here in Oklahoma with both parents being stationed at Tinker Air Force Base. My maternal uncle served in the United States Marine Corps. His involvement in mine and my brother’s lives was a large influence on my brother choosing to serve in the Marine Corps. My paternal grandfather and great grandfather served in the United States Navy, with my great grandfather serving on the USS Nevada in WWII. My father has traced our families’ service back to the Revolutionary War. Like I said, service runs in my blood. When I was old enough, my heart knew it wasn’t whether I would or would not serve, it was always which branch. Many factors went into my decision but, ultimately, I wanted the reputation of being a Marine. After my time serving on active duty, I came back to Oklahoma. My service did not end in the Marine Corps; it only gave me a cause to champion. I enrolled at the University of Central Oklahoma and, after some difficulties with the enrollment process, I interviewed to work in the Veterans Affairs office on campus. I used my leadership skills the Marine Corps enhanced, my passion for service, and love for family to make waves of changes. I wanted better—not for me, but for everyone who came after me. From the time I started working at the VA office at UCO to now is amazing to see and fills my heart with joy. If we all put in effort to leave everywhere we go a better place, we together can change the world.

I have been honored to take my military experience and use it to better those who served before me, with me, and after me. My husband is a United States Navy veteran. Together, we run Oklahoma’s Freedom Rows program, The Warriors. The program is a grant funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs to US Rowing. We are one of many programs across the United States allowing veterans the opportunity to row. Rowing is a great sport to get in shape. It is also therapeutic. The water itself is therapeutic, but our crew saves lives. We support each other, and not just in rowing. This program has given me another opportunity to serve others and make the world a better place. Coaching The Warriors is just one of the many hats that I wear. I am also able to continue to serve my fellow service members and veterans through my suicide prevention efforts. I get to teach first responders, military members and veteran groups about suicide prevention and suicide intervention. I use my experience from the military and my growth from outside to help coalitions across the United States develop plans to reduce suicide among service members, veterans and their families. Every day, we are all battling something. By taking an extra minute to check-in on your “battle buddy,” you could just save their life. Located on Main Street in Norman, The Winston features classic meals with a modern flair and boasts a sizable whiskey selection that’s unmatched in the metro. The menu also features craft cocktails and draft beer, including many local drafts. Whether guests are seeking a night out with friends, dinner with the family, or a glass of wine after a long week, The Winston will be there. The Winston’s general manager, Scarlett Burnett, encouraged whiskey lovers to drop in soon to check out one of their featured single-barrel specials, which currently include the Weller Antique, which is served nonchilled/filtered. The supply of this whiskey, featuring velvety, vanilla and oaky notes, is very limited. Other selections she recommended include the 110 proof Wilderness Train Rye, aged for four years 11 months, with notes of baked bread and baking spices and has a long finish; the L’Encantada Armagnac XO, a Winston blend that actually isn’t bourbon but is loved by bourbon fans, described as rich and velvety, with a sweet finish; and the Lassalle, Bellair and Del Cassou. These are vintage, 89 proof vintages from 1989, 2004 and 1985, respectively. Asked about her favorite whiskey/bourbon at The Winston, she laughed and responded, “This is a trick question. We have such a huge variety. I would have to obviously go with a Winston barrel pick. My choice would be WhistlePig 10 Year Single Barrel Rye Winston Pick, ORRRR I would probably go for any of the Little Book Chapters.”

If your taste runs more to cocktails, Scarlett recommends the “I Can Sea Clearly Now.” “Anytime it’s being made, I feel like I’m part of a science experiment, and it brings me pure joy. Oh, and it’s super-freaking delicious,” she said. Scarlett is passionate not only for what The Winston serves, but also its amazing staff and, of course, the guests. “I love people, and I can’t wait to say ‘hey’ to a new guest in hopes they’ll become a regular so I can get to know more about them. I like to make friends, and anyone who says ‘hey,’ becomes a friend.” Those friendships extend to the restaurant staff. “My favorite secret of The Winston would have to be how much fun we actually have, and also, how much it hurts when the staff graduates and moves on with their lives. We become such a family and all grow together. It’s my favorite. I’m so proud of all the staff: past, present, and hopefully the future.”
