OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH FELIX YANG

NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

I qualified for state for the past two years and was grateful to be a part of Norman North’s 200 Medley Relay Team as the freestyler when we placed 2nd overall. My weighted GPA is currently 4.474.

Personal highlights?

My parents are Fan Zhang and Yunfeng Yang. Aside from swimming, I love playing pingpong, working at my local café to create great latte art, listening to music, and trying out new restaurants. I’m also a hard-core Tennessee Volunteers fan - go vols!

How do you maintain balance?

Passion is key. I consider school and sports as part of my lifestyle, as each can enrich me in different ways. No matter what walk of life I choose, I try to always embrace the “why” and strive to push myself to the next level.

Plans for the future?

I hope to major in statistics, though future school remains undecided. The best thing about being a data scientist is that you get to play in everyone’s backyard, regardless of having previous expertise in any areas. Nevertheless, I’m deeply curious to explore more and potentially involve myself in economics, biostatistics, and sociology.

HANNAH FIELDS

NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight? This season, I made the All-Tournament Teams for the Joe Lawson Tournament and the Ada Tournament.

Personal highlights?

My parents are David and Jamie Fields. In addition to basketball, I’m active with my church youth group at Paradigm and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Norman North. I also enjoy coaching my third-grade girls’ basketball team and spending time with family and friends.

How do you maintain balance?

Planning and staying disciplined in school and training keep me focused and balanced.

Plans for the future?

I plan to play basketball in college while pursuing a degree in physical therapy with a focus on pediatrics.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Greetings From the Publisher

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Jimmy Darden | jimmy.darden@citylifestyle.com 405.541.5650 MANAGING EDITOR

Can it really be 2022 already? We are excited to transition from our old brand of Lifestyle Publications to our new brand of City Lifestyle as we blend our luxury print and national digital platforms together. We believe 2022 will be an incredible year for our communities. This issue marks the beginning of the seventh year of Cleveland County City Lifestyle, and this past July we took ownership of OKC City Lifestyle. Our commitment to serving has never been stronger and our founding verses Proverbs 3:5-6 remain the standard for everything we do. None of this would be possible without two incredible editors! Jerri Culpepper has been the managing editor of Cleveland County since we began in February of 2016 and Heide Brandes, the managing editor of OKC, has also been on board since the beginning of that publication. They are the hearts of these publications and, along with our writers and photographers, they serve our community with incredible content to the 200,000+ readers we serve across the metro. Our pages are the new town square where like-minded businesses that love our communities gather to share great stories and to help us support our communities' charities and nonprofits. We invite you to join them in this endeavor. I'd also like to draw your attention to the City Scene section, where we feature photos from our Client Holiday Reception and Wine Testing, held at Water's Edge Winery in Moore and featuring appetizers from Oliveto's. At the reception, we also honored our 2021 Women of Influence. Merelyn Bell, Emily Mick and Kathy Griffith received their Lewis Jewelers medallions that evening, but I'd also like to recognize once again our 2021 WOI who were not able to make it to the reception: Stacy Bruce, Jennifer Bryan, Robbi Craig and Becky Switzer. As always we hope you enjoy this issue as we celebrate "Local Love"! Reach out to me anytime at the email or mobile number listed to the right and let me know how we can serve our communities even better! May you have a blessed 2022.

OU’S JAZZY RICHARDS OVERCOMES PERSONAL, PLAYER CHALLENGES BETWEEN THE ‘DASHES’

ARTICLE BY DEBBIE COPP PHOTOGRAPHY BY TY RUSSELL

T H E DA S H

BETWEEN THE DATES

It has been said that the story is told in the dash between the dates. For Jazzy Richards, a senior on the Sooner soccer team, that dash needs to be longer than most. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Jazzy arrived in Norman in the summer of 2018. Before preseason, she was playing and collided with another player. The impact wasn’t that hard, so she thought nothing of it.

26

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

A few days later, she noticed blood in her urine and was sent for tests. The tests were not conclusive, and she was sent home for a month of rest and no physical activity. Symptoms didn’t improve and a specialist determined there was a tumor in her bladder. The tumor proved to be malignant, and Jazzy became the first person in the world to be diagnosed with a rare brain tumor in her bladder. With no treatment protocol for the aggressive cancer, doctors gave Jazzy and her family two treatment options: monitor

the tumor and if it grew, remove the bladder, or immediately remove the bladder. Late in the first semester of her freshman year, the Richards family made the difficult decision to remove the bladder. “I knew my class schedule for the second semester,” Jazzy said. “I visited with each professor before I headed home. I explained what was going on and all helped me figure out a plan for the classes I would miss.” Surgery happened in mid-January and Richards returned to campus in February. Cleared to resume training in March, she returned to soccer in May. She played in all 19 games as a sophomore. She looked forward to a quality return to the pitch in the fall of 2020. A coaching change happened, and Richards lost the coach who had been there from the start. Jazzy has high praise for the new staff and the support offered. The pandemic hit in March 2020 and Richards faced a shutdown on campus—academically and athletically. The off-site, online classes brought new challenges while Jazzy continued to add to her 4.00 cumulative GPA. She was named the Class of 2020 Honda Inspiration Award winner by The Collegiate Women Sports Award. However, the pandemic forced the cancellation of the awards ceremony and the dash continued to grow. Richards was held out in the fall of 2020. Chosen as a team captain, she returned to competition in the spring of 2021. She played all six games, starting 3. That set her up for a senior season that was arguably her best. She played 19 of 20 games, led the team in goals scored and was second in points. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in accounting in May 2021 and will earn her master’s degree, also in accounting, this May. She has a 4.00 GPA heading into her final semester and has a job waiting for her at Price Waterhouse Cooper in the tax depreciation services group. She goes through scans every six months and is looking forward to the day that the scans are scheduled on an annual basis. “I’m thankful for my time at OU because it’s allowed me to meet some of my favorite people and create memories that will last a lifetime,” Jazzy added. “I’ve learned so much at OU. Time management, discipline, focus, balance—I have learned to deal with what I can. Looking back, there is nothing I would change.” And with her usual even-keel approach, Jazzy adds something else to that dash. “I may be a name in a textbook someday—the first person in the world to have a brain tumor develop in her bladder.”

Beautiful, whimsical and thought-provoking art can be found throughout Cleveland County, and it doesn’t cost a cent to see much of it. Two of the highest concentrations of outside art can be found in downtown Norman and the University of Oklahoma Norman campus, but you’ll also find murals and sculptures throughout the metro. You’ve probably come across at least some of them. Next time you’re looking for something to do, on your own, with a friend/s or with the family, why don’t you take a drive and see what you can find? If you’re into photography, this will be an especially fun activity. Following we’ve listed a selection of murals and sculptures you’ll find in the area. Keep your eyes open; you’re sure to find much more!

MURALS (ALL IN NORMAN): Tattoo Woman, produced by Dreamer Concepts and Hall of Tattoos, east end of Main Street along Porter Avenue Three Days by Rick Sinnett, who has painted murals across Route 66 and Oklahoma, next to STASH on Main Street, across from the fire station Sinnett also created Norman Red-tail Hawk, north side of Main Street; also viewable from Gray Welcome to Downtown Norman (pictured), was commissioned by Dr. Gabriel Bird, DDS, for his office building at 227 W. Main St. It’s the work of Clean Hands Army co-founder Justin Baney, along with partners Aaron Whisner and Case Morton. The Heart of Norman Murals by Dr. Bob Painter, parking lot along East Gray Street between N. Peters and N. Crawford avenues Designed by various artists, the Bike Racks in Norman’s Arts District, which extends from University Boulevard to Porter Avenue, depict a dreamcatcher, scissortail flycatcher, fork and spoon, coffee cup, buffalo, thundercloud and bicycle. YELLOW DOG COFFEE COMPANY ARTICLE BY JERRI CULPEPPER

Currently nestled in the heart of Norman on Tonhawa, the business will soon expand to a historic building in the Original Townsite area. Heather McCutchen

“We hope to provide a community space for a coffee experience that includes all things bean to cup! Our vision includes an eventual bookstore, and a space for local live entertainment. Look for this space to open late spring of 2022.”

Coffee beans are fresh roasted on the Yellow Dog Coffee Company premises. Heather McCutchen Photography

The love of coffee was first sparked for coffee connoisseur Rob Wilson and his wife, Sereta, several years ago while traveling across the United States and Europe. They sampled coffees in each place they went, and upon returning home to Norman, tried to recreate those tastes. That experience evolved into discussions on how Rob could further delve into his java passion, and the decision was that he would explore opening his own coffee business. But first, Rob traveled the country on a solo journey to conduct research or, as he puts it, “find myself and my coffee groove.” Rob attended several roasting schools, including the Diedrich Roaster manufacturing company’s roaster school in Sand Point, Idaho. As he traveled there and back, Rob undertook a “spiritual quest, meditating and experiencing the wonders of this great planet.” In 2018, the couple launched their business from their small farm in Norman. The Wilson duo have since moved to town, but their operations have now grown into a full-service coffee shop and roasting house—the Yellow Dog Coffee Company, named after their yellow Labrador Annie—in the heart of Norman. Around this time Kate Bierman joined the team and was instrumental in taking the businesses to the next level. The team has recently purchased a historic building in the Original Townsite area (222 S. Porter Ave.) where they intend to expand their food offerings, the seating capacity and create a meeting space for all community. “We hope to provide a community space for a coffee experience that includes all things bean to cup!’” said Sereta, co-owner. “Our vision includes an eventual bookstore, and a space for local live entertainment. Look for this space to open late spring of 2022.”

“We choose our beans based on the ethical harvests and support of small farms. The farms we choose enable you to shop LOCAL, but on a GLOBAL scale.” Customers rave about their coffee, which is fresh roasted on the premises with the help of Rob’s co-roaster and shop manager Audrey Short, and part-time roaster Sam Fugate. The shop also sells muffins and cookies baked on site, and scones baked by Jon Hunnell with Sconed (www.sconedcity.com). (Side note: Jon is embarking upon opening his own restaurant in the heart of Norman to be named Levity Breakfast House, which will be located at 309 S. Peters Ave.). Yellow Dog also provides fresh roasted beans delivered to the door of clients living within Norman city limits and offer weekly and monthly subscriptions. Yellow Dog Coffee Company purchases its beans from small co-op farms located in Ethiopia, Brazil, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico, among other places. “We choose our beans based on the ethical harvests and support of small farms,” Rob said. “The farms we choose enable you to shop LOCAL, but on a GLOBAL scale.” Each farm provides support for their villages through their coffee bean harvest, and since coffee beans cannot be grown locally, this is the next best thing, Rob explains. Several fine local and Oklahoma businesses also carry the Yellow Dog Coffee Company’s coffees, including Stash, Scratch and Cool Beans in Norman (also owned and managed by the team), Sample Oklahoma, Sooner Pharmacy, the Shivering Monkey in Tecumseh, and Sei Bella in Drummond. Yellow Dog Coffee Company’s mission, as stated on their website, is to: “provide folks with the best quality, responsibly sourced, locally roasted craft coffee beans. We hope to bring the world’s best coffee to our customers, while giving back to our community, all roasted with passion and appreciation of all the work it takes to bring coffee to your cup.” Rob, Sereta and Kate also own and operate Annie’s Ruff House boarding studio, doggy daycare and dog rescue. They have started and serve on several local boards and organizations. They believe deeply in the philanthropic business model, and a portion of their profits go to the Annie’s Rescue Foundation 501©3, which supports medical needs of animals in Norman.

ARTICLE BY LINDSEY DAVIES

B ACK STAGE | L IFE + CU LTURE

HOW DID THE BAND’S NAME DERIVE? Michael Bendure: Well, we’re all gingers, and two of us like whiskey, so the name came together pretty naturally.

WHO ARE YOUR BAND MEMBERS AND WHAT DO THEY PLAY? Jess Crothers: acoustic guitar, vocals Jenny Bendure: acoustic guitar, vocals Michael Bendure: bass, vocals, tambourine

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU PLAY? Jess: Acoustic folk rock/Americana. Inspiration singers/bands include Brandi Carlisle, Patty Griffin, Indigo Girls, the Decembrists, Dolly Parton, the Secret Sisters, Tom Petty

The Whiskey Gingers: Michael and Jenny Bendure and Jess Crothers (Matthew Stratton Photography)

BAND’S BACKGROUND? The Whiskey Gingers began with Jess Crothers and Jenny Bendure, who met at the SongWriters Association of Norman (SWAN) in mid-2017 and quickly formed a musical bond and friendship. Both have performed in previous bands and have close to 20 years’ combined experience. They started playing as an acoustic duo in the spring of 2018, adding singer/songwriter Michael Bendure (also of Heartbreak Rodeo) on bass and vocals later that summer. The acoustic trio performs original music and cover tunes ranging from folk to classic rock and pop that highlight their rich vocal harmonies. For certain venues, they add a drummer to kick things up a notch. I n 2020, the band released their first full-length album, You Should Know, which was recorded by Oklahoma guitar legend

Terry “Buffalo” Ware and mixed and mastered by Carl Amburn at Mousetrap Studios. The album is available for streaming on Spotify and YouTube or for purchase on iTunes, Amazon and other outlets.

DOES ANYONE WRITE ORIGINAL MUSIC? Michael: We all do. Our album features 12 original songs, and each of us either wrote the songs or we co-wrote them together. Jen: For example, I wrote “Daisy’s Song,” about our small dachshund; Jess wrote “Cowboy,” about her father; and Michael wrote “Ride the River,” about playing live music with friends. Jess and I co-wrote “Light in Your Eyes,” about a trucker in love.

WHERE DO YOU PERFORM LOCALLY? Michael: Lots of breweries, wineries and restaurants, like Hollywood Corners, Libby’s, Angry Scotsman Brewing, Frenzy Brewing, Pryor’s Pizza, Native Spirits Winery, the Farm Girl Fair, the Grand Casino—lots of great places with great people! We occasionally play with drummer Carl Amburn, who owns Mousetrap Studios and mixed and mastered our album. Jess: We’re planning to head back into the studio for our next album soon, as well as take some out-of-state tours.

EACH BAND MEMBER LISTED THEIR TOPTHREE SONG SELECTIONS ON SPOTIFY. Jess: All of mine are gonna be Kids’ Bop, ‘cause I’m a nanny! • The Decemberists: “Make You Better” • Grace Potter: “Love is Love” • Sarah Watkins: “Like New Year’s Day” Jen: I frequently listen to lo-fi beats playlists while I work, so the songs I often come back to are: • Tom Petty: “Won’t Back Down” • ”Wildflowers” • James Taylor: “Carolina” Michael: I host a podcast called 40 Minutes of Funk, as well as a two-hour radio show on KGOU every Friday night called Tonic: The Funky Groove Show, so my songs have a very funky flavor: • Prince: “1000 Light Years From Here” • Analog Son: “Funk Back” • Professor Longhair: “Doin’ It (Part Two)”

Lindsey Martin has always had the urge to create art, whether it was painting seashells on the beach in St. Augustine, Florida, making stained glass jewelry or teaching. She has taught art at multiple elementary schools in Norman. When she sold her art school (Scissortail School of Art) located in downtown Norman, in 2016, her main goal was to make more original art—not just example art for projects. She dove

back into painting in winter 2018, at which time she became interested in creating paintings of inspirational women. “I wanted to include these inspirational women’s hands in every portrait. Our hands do so much for us and are such an important piece to every image, whether those hands are holding a microphone, praying, experimenting, writing, or holding a loved one, they are all so very important,” she says. She’s currently working on another series of hip hop artists, which will be displayed this spring at Sundeep Sharma’s album release show in OKC.

wine & valentine’s day Water’s Edge Winery Has a Wine Pairing That’s ... Have you made plans for Valentine’s Day yet? If you and your loved one are passionate about wine, Water’s Edge Winery & Bistro co-owner Mara English would like to request your attention for a minute. Water’s Edge, Moore’s first winery, is offering two special wines for the holiday, which you can enjoy on the premises in the bistro or wine-tasting area, or pick up or order online for your enjoyment at home. These also would make fantastic Valentine’s or Gal-entines Day gifts as well. Delancey Pino Noir offers aromas of cherry mash and warm spice and the flavors of succulent strawberries and hints of lively oak. Finishing with a rush of juicy acidity and light tannins, this mouth-watering red is sure to pair with your favorite meal. Rosé Brut Sparkle presents as a vibrant light pink hue and features inviting aromas of jasmine blossom, Kaffir lime leaf, tangerine and raspberry. The mouthfeel is creamy and delicate, with energetic bubbles that tickle the tongue. Just so you know: The winery sources its grapes from the best vineyards located in the finest grape-growing regions: France, Italy, Spain, Australia, South Africa and the United States. Under the guidance of their head wine maker, Conner Meek, they hand craft each and every small batch of their wines locally.
