OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH NATHAN MILHAN MOORE HIGH SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

My most recent academic highlight would be getting accepted into Moore Norman Technology Center, and my recent sports achievement would be getting to state two years in a row for swimming. I also took part in a national debate tournament in Texas and am a member of the Honor Society.

Personal highlights?

My parents are Dan and Lisa Milhan. I’ve been swimming for almost eight years now and enjoy coaching the newer swimmers. I enjoy 3d modeling and printing, along with video games.

How do you maintain balance?

I’m usually pretty busy with swimming, school, debate or whatever else is going on, but the best strategy that I’ve found when it comes to managing everything is to just try and prioritize and find what needs to get done.

Plans for the future?

My goals when it comes to my career are still kind of open-ended. I would like to pursue a doctorate in nuclear engineering and hopefully teach at the college level at some point. Second, I want to work in the civilian sector, possibly in a power plant. Finally, I want to get into politics and advocate for more progressive energy reforms.

Channing Apel MOORE HIGH SCHOOL

Recent sports or academic highlight?

I have straight A’s with 4.25 GPA. I am a member of the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars.

Personal highlights?

My mom’s name is Maureen Root, my dad’s name is Shaun Root, and I have a 10-year-old little sister. I currently do girls’ wrestling, and after wrestling season I go into track and field and pole vault. When I have free time, I enjoy cooking new dishes and experimenting with the flavors.

How do you maintain balance?

I have a to-do list for the week just for school work. I add all my assignments that need to be done that week and cross them off when finished. I do as much work as I can get done at school, then after wrestling practice finish what needs to get done. I mainly spend weekends with my friends and family.

Plans for the future?

I plan on going to the University of Oklahoma to pursue a degree in aeronautical or mechanical engineering. I plan on being an airline transport pilot. Traveling to new places and experiencing the culture has always been a passion of mine.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Jimmy Darden | jimmy.darden@citylifestyle.com 405.541.5650 MANAGING EDITOR

Hope everyone's new year is starting off on a positive note! As you peruse this, the first issue of 2022, you'll notice some changes, including our name. Also, Around Town is now Business Monthly and Good Times is now City Scene. You'll see some changes in layout as well. We're excited about the new look, and hope you will be, too! One of our featured stories this time shines the spotlight on University of Oklahoma alumnus and U.S. Marine veteran Paul Lore, who last month embarked with his team, also veterans, on an epic row as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Their goal? To raise funds for organizations in their home state of Florida targeting veterans struggling with mental health issues. And to challenge others, including OU alumni, to find a way to raise funds for an important cause—to make a difference in the world, or at least locally. I'd say that's a pretty worthy New Year's resolution, if you haven't made one yet! I'll follow up on this heroic team effort in our February issue. Other stories target a local man and woman's successful weight-loss and fitness journey; a business that offers a plethora of nonsurgical services to help men and women look and feel their best; a new business in Moore that combines the best of traditional winemaking with a cutting-edge wine bar experience; and a premier First American art gallery and retail shop located in OKC’s Bricktown district that's owned and operated by the Chickasaw Nation. In addition, the co-owner of a longtime OKC travel agency gives a glowing report on a recent cruise she and her husband took aboard the Regent Seven Seas Explorer, as well as a visit to the award-winning Red Lane Spa at Sandals Resort Barbados. Before closing, I'd like to note that next month will mark the start of our seventh year of producing this magazine. It's been a fun, sometimes challenging, venture for me and publisher Jimmy Darden (who also last year also assumed the publisher role for another Lifestyle magazine, OKC City Lifestyle). Personally, my favorite part of this job has been the opportunity to learn about the people and places that make Cleveland County such a special place in which to live and work. I'd love to receive your feedback anytime; email me at Jerri.Culpepper@ CityLifestyle.com.

“The original location thrived in downtown Oklahoma City for eight years before the previous owner decided to retire. My husband and I purchased it from him, and we couldn’t be more excited to add a new chapter to the storied history of this popular winery.” Across the nation, Water’s Edge Wineries exist for a single purpose—to bring the amazing world of wine to a wider audience, and to remove barriers that keep people from enjoying wine on a regular basis. The latest location of Water’s Edge Wineries, which opened in Cleveland County in early December—brings the first winery of its kind to Moore. “We are so proud to bring something new and unique to Moore/Norman and South Oklahoma City,” explains Mara English, co-owner of Water’s Edge in Moore. Mara, along with husband Mike, are glad to have opened our new urban winery, which offers a perfect location for both expert and novice wine drinkers to enjoy.” Located on the corner of SE 19th and South Broadway Avenue, Water’s Edge allows patrons to enjoy custom-made wines that are fermented, bottled and corked in Oklahoma City. “Water’s Edge Winery is a family-owned winery,” Mara explains. “The original location thrived in downtown Oklahoma City for eight years before the previous owner decided to retire. My husband and I purchased it from him, and we couldn’t be more excited to add a new chapter to the storied history of this popular winery.” There are 12 Water’s Edge locations across the United States, and the Moore location is the newest winery to join the family. Water’s Edge began in California in 2012; they describe their locations as “micro-wineries” that bring the best of wine culture to communities across the United States. All locations of Water’s Edge are unique because they do not grow or crush the grapes that create their signature and specialty wines. Instead, they outsource the grapes from a global network of vineyards and growers. Grapes are sourced from some of the finest grape-growing regions of the world, such as Italy, France, New Zealand, Chile, Germany and California, and the actual wine production is handled onsite. “Under the guidance of our head winemaker, Conner Meek, we handcraft each and every small batch of our wines locally. My favorite wine right now is the Almond Sparkle Sparkling Wine!” “We source our grapes from the best vineyards located in the finest grape-growing regions around the world,” Mara explains. “Under the guidance of our head winemaker, Conner Meek, we handcraft each and every small batch of our wines locally. My favorite wine right now is the Almond Sparkle Sparkling Wine!” Two of Water’s Edge’s most popular signature wines are Scandalous, a popular sweet black cherry dessert Pinot Noir, and Big Daddy Red, a rich Cabernet Sauvignon. “Those two wines are definitely ones I would recommend for guests to try, but I am sure everyone will find one that is their favorite,” Mara says. Water’s Edge combines the best of traditional winemaking with a cutting-edge wine bar experience. All Water’s Edge Wineries offer a selection of delectable bistro-style appetizers and desserts, including charcuterie, Panini-style sandwiches, flatbread pizzas and artisan cheeses. In addition, the Moore winery will feature a variety of popcorn flavors made possible by Mike and Mara’s other business, Ace Party Supplies & Showtime Concessions in Moore. Water’s Edge Winery offers high-quality wines, a relaxing atmosphere and a cultural experience. The Moore location features an industrial-chic atmosphere and a spacious lawn that Mike and Mara plan to utilize for special events and private parties. “We plan on doing outside events, tasting parties, private and custom labels for special occasions, and so much more,” Mara adds. Guests are invited to come to the Moore location to taste their selections of red wines, white wines and sangrias, as well as bottling parties and tours. Custom labeling is available for favorite blends or for personalized gifts, and Water’s Edge will offer an exclusive wine club. Wine club memberships begin at $35 per month, and offer access to private events, discounts on wine-related purchases, wine tastings and more. “We were wine club members for about five years before we bought the franchise, and we would visit the downtown location a few times a week,” Mara says. “We can’t wait to meet everyone and will offer wine club memberships specials. We invite you to come to our new location and experience all that we have to offer.”

s ’ d l r t o s w oughe t w o r TEAM TAKES ON DARING ROWING CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR NONPROFITS TARGETING VETERANS STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES A University of Oklahoma alumnus/U.S. Marine Corps veteran teamed up with three other U.S. armed forces veterans on a daring rowing challenge across the Atlantic Ocean in December to raise funds for organizations in their home state of Florida targeting veterans struggling with mental health issues. Paul Lore, who earned his master’s degree in public administration in 2011 from OU, is sharing their story in hopes that news of their involvement in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge—billed as the “World’s Toughest Row”—will inspire members of the OU family—and the public at-large—to follow suit by creating their own campaign or aiding an established fundraiser such as this one. During the race, Lore and his team rowed over 1.5 million oar strokes. They rowed for two hours, and slept for two hours, constantly, 24 hours a day, in waves measuring up to 20 feet high. Rowers generally burn over 5,000 calories a day, and on average lose over 26 lbs. during the crossing. “We are embarking on this endurance journey to raise awareness and funds for PTSD and veteran suicide— partnering with organizations that are making a discernible impact in this area,” says Paul, who served as an air traffic controller in the Marines and retired from a 30-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration. “Every day we’re on the ocean for this unsupported row, we will be pushing for each stroke, for each mile, for each day—we will get up and put in the work to achieve the goal. While this is the hardest endurance challenge the four of us will face, it pales in comparison to what warriors with PTSD face every day.”

nknk

THE TEAM AND THEIR MISSION The other members of Paul’s ocean row team were Billy Cimino, Cameron Hansen and A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann, veterans of the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy, respectively. Of course, not unlike with any military foray, the FOAR FROM HOME team also included an “army” of supporters that included their spouses and a land support team working in areas ranging from boat shipping and equipment logistics to row coaching and media consulting. Even before the race, the FFH team had exceeded its initial $500,000 goal to benefit their partner organizations—K9’s For Warriors and Cross The Line Foundation. The team coined the phrase “It Takes an Island to Cross an Ocean” early on in their campaign, and their fundraising successes have proven this to be true. The team will continue to push with their fundraising through 2022 by working to fund four more dogs for K9’s for Warriors and four additional scholarships for Cross The Line Foundation, as well as the broader mission of raising awareness of PTSD and other issues plaguing our nation’s warriors.

THE TALISKER WHISKY ATLANTIC CHALLENGE Organizer: Atlantic Campaigns SL, a Spanish company, has organized the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge since 2012 and overseen seven ocean rows and seven Guinness World Records. Over $7 million has been raised for charities worldwide over the past four races. Launch Details: Early December, in the race village of San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands; 30-40 row teams from around the world competed. The Challenge: FOAR FROM HOME and the other rowing teams rowed more than 3,000 miles west to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbor, Antigua—one of the two major islands that comprise the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. The rowers battle with sleep deprivation, salt sores and other physical extremes while they work together to ensure they reach their destination safely.

My vision is to be able to bring out the beauty of all that surrounds us from the big to the small. I believe it is all valuable and serves a purpose. I am an avid nature lover as I feel we can recalibrate our souls away from the stressors of life away in the woods. I travel across our beautiful state to try and capture all the beauty it provides. The images I capture can only be deciphered by the viewer and that is what I love about what I am able to do. I can be contacted through email, phone, or Facebook messenger about any prints you need or anything you would want me to capture specially for you! I will travel as well.

Mudlark: In Search of London’s Past Along the River Thames by Lara Maiklem This book is a love story to history and, in particular, to the banks of the Thames River in London. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down! The author goes out and searches for items that reveal themselves on the tidal river’s banks, and her dedication to preserving history and understanding the city that surrounds the river was astounding. I follow her on all social media, where she often posts photos or videos of her finds — it’s incredibly captivating!

Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest Leda’s job is a dying art—she is a travel agent. It’s a good thing she’s “lightly” psychic, then! Though her predictions may not always be accurate, she’s great at finding her few clients the best rate on flights. When she inadvertently saves the life of a Seattle PD detective, he enlists her help—unreliable or not—to solve a murder. This was a light, fun read that made me laugh outloud and featured great side characters.

Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden This book is a terrific read in winter, as its bleak and stark tone match the season perfectly. Virgil is barely scraping by as an unofficial “enforcer” on his reservation in South Dakota. He is often the last resort for those in his community who can’t get justice any other way. But when his beloved nephew is found nearly dead from an overdose, Virgil decides to eliminate the threat to his family, but may be biting off more than he can chew. I loved the quick pace and twisty mystery of this book.

The Charm Offensive by Allison Cochrun Dev works on Ever After—a fake dating show that tops the charts every season—and he should be immune to believing in true love. But it’s his dedication to the idea of the perfect romance that keeps the show on top year after year. Until he is given Charlie, the least likeable, and least likely hero imaginable. But is Charlie a jerk, or just different? As Dev coaches him through the show, Charlie begins to realize some things about himself. Will Dev coach himself out of the perfect man, or will they realize they’re perfect for each other?

Elevate Wellness and Aesthetics owner Ashley Willeford

Elevate Wellness and Aesthetics recently celebrated its third anniversary of bringing the latest and most effective treatments in aesthetic and wellness medicine to the surrounding community—one individual at a time. “We at Elevate Wellness and Aesthetics believe that this is never a one-size-fits-all specialty, and we take the time to assess each person individually and address their concerns to find a customized plan of action, states owner Ashley Willeford. “With the new year upon us, we are thrilled to add new treatments to help people become the best version of themselves!” Like the global leader in the field of minimally invasive clinical solutions for the surgical, ophthalmology and aesthetic markets, Ashley says the Elevate team believes that being different is a good thing, especially when it comes to our bodies. “We all have different body shapes, sizes, weight, and goals,” Ashley adds, noting that they are really excited about the newest device in their health arsenal, NuEra Tight, that “has the power to help people celebrate their differences and unleash their bodies’ true potential, from head to toe.” She describes NuEraTight as “a revolutionary, non-invasive skin-smoothing platform, suitable for a wide range of body types and areas … Its state-of-the-art personalized deep-heating technology enables us to treat a wide range of conditions in one, impactful tailored-made session, delivering natural-looking, long-lasting results with a ‘hot stone massage’ feel.”

NuEraTight is a non-invasive radio frequency solution to improve the appearance of cellulite and skin laxity, with consistent results and without downtime. Unlike other body treatments, it can be personalized specifically for your body, working to treat each of your skin layers with the right settings for your body’s skin thickness, hydration, age and laxity. “NuEraTight optimizes treatment efficacy on the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, and bra and back fat, as well as around the eyes, mouth, cheeks and neck,” Ashley notes, adding that they advise their clients to schedule four to six sessions, spaced every one to two weeks, for optimal results. Elevate currently is offering a special for all body areas: buy four sessions, get two free. Elevate also offers a host of other services, including hormone pellets to boost energy and reduce pain; Neo Elite Laser, a safe and effective way to solve several skin problems and conditions; IV/IM treatments to stop dehydratrion; and PDO thread treatments, a nonsurgical way to get tight and lifted skin. “We can’t wait to see you and get your personalized treatment plan started,” Ashley says. CRUISE LINES SAILING AGAIN! 38

Red Lane Spa at Sandals Resort Barbados (Photograph by Bonnie Hedges)

RESORTS ALSO OPEN AGAIN: SOME IDEAS FOR A LUXURIOUS HEALTH AND WELLNESS VACATION ARTICLE BY BONNIE HEDGES

The holidays and 2021 are in the past. I’ve never been one to wish away time, but I’m glad it’s over. We love to travel and have missed being able to take off to the Caribbean, Mexico or go on a cruise. Cruise lines are sailing, and resorts are open, so in December off we went on our “health and wellness vacation.” Our first destination was Sandals Resort Barbados. We took advantage of the award-winning Red Lane Spa, enjoying a couple’s massage and much-needed pampering. The spa was immaculately clean. You can have a private health consultant to guide you and customize an exercise program. Every restaurant at the resort has a “healthy menu.” Prior to leaving for Barbados, we had to have a negative COVID PCR test within 72 hours of traveling, but Barbados does not accept a Rapid COVID PCR test. We were grateful to be introduced to the Classen Urgent Care Center in Moore, which is open seven days a week. Then, as it turned out, we needed another test in Barbados at the airport. Believe me, all of this lends to quite a bit of stress because every travel location has a different entry policy. At one point prior to leaving home, traveling did not seem like the thing to do. You must be fully vaccinated to travel to most countries and on all cruises. We had to present our COVID vaccine card everywhere we went. Our next “adventure” was to board the Regent Seven Seas Explorer in Barbados, where once again at the pier we were given a COVID test. I tell you all of this to let you know ALL precautions and protocols are being followed, so you can travel safely. It just takes some deep breaths and patience. CONTINUED >

Once on board this all-inclusive luxury ship, we took a deep breath and pledged to enjoy every part of the voyage—which for me was to schedule services at the Serene Spa & Wellness. A hair treatment, facial and a couple’s massage were on my list. You can take advantage of the sauna, steam bath and infinity pool at no additional charge. The spa treatments began at $98 depending on the treatment. To me, they were worth every penny. As a Regent Seven Seas Cruises passenger, shore excursions are included. Masks were optional onboard for guests but all staff members are required to wear a mask and are tested weekly. Cruising or staying at all-inclusive resorts does not necessarily mean unhealthy eating. Every menu includes healthy suggestions, sugar-free desserts and sugar-free beverages. They also offer lifestyle coaching, which includes a fitness instructor. There are always wonderful fruit and vegetable drinks, and they even offer sugar-free adult beverages; my favorite was the Mexican Butterfly, made with tequila. Traveling will never be like it was two years ago. I believe the safety protocols are here to stay. This should only help you to feel safe while you are traveling. Traveling is a great way to learn firsthand about other countries. If you enjoy traveling like we do, we just have to learn to go with the flow, follow the protocols, then enjoy. The skilled travel advisers at Bentley Hedges Travel can help you plan your next “Health and Wellness” vacation. Sometimes a change in scenery is enough to clear your mind. So, pack your bags and travel! I suggest you work with a local travel agency; online booking sites simply can’t personally answer all your questions or suggest where to go for the tests you need. Happy New Year. I wish you a wonderful 2022. Keep healthy.

orangetheory fitness-moore MAXIMUM RESULTS, LIFE-CHANGING IMPACT ARTICLE BY BROOKE BARNETT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC PRICE, STANDING STILL PHOTOGRAPHY

Alicia Allen was in her early 50s when she had an epiphany. Realizing that she had spent more than half of adulthood raising kids and taking care of a house, she decided that it was finally time to take care of herself. “I had been working from home and, honestly, I needed to get out of the house,” she confides. “I knew I needed to get back into exercising, and I wasn’t being consistent at home.” The mother of three looked at nearby gyms and workout programs, hoping to find a place that would be a good fit for her. “I wanted something that would challenge me,” she explains. “Orangetheory Fitness seemed like it would be that very challenge.” For Josh McCutchen, it only took one trip into Orangetheory Fitness for him to realize that he wanted to be the poster child for the program. “I’ve always been fairly active, and I’ve played sports my whole life, but I’ve always been a larger person,” he explains. “I was right at the 400pound mark, and I knew it was not the quality of life that I wanted.” His job as an associate pastor at Victory Family Church in Newcastle involves lots of desk work, and his busy family life as a father of four left very little time for exercise. “For me, working out every day has never been a priority,” Josh reflects. “I knew I wasn’t physically where I needed to be.” Josh walked into the OTF Moore location one day to see what he could learn about the program. His first visit took him deeper than many fitness programs, examining his personal goals and exploring why he wanted to make a positive change. “I wanted to improve both my longevity and quality of life,” he explains. “I want to be there for my kids and grandkids.”

Josh took his first class in February 2020 and has attended nearly 400 classes since that initial visit. “I found something totally different than what I expected. There are people of all sizes, ages, races, and each person is doing the best for them in their own specific way,” he adds. “Coach Wendy was the first staff member I connected with, and she told me that I didn’t get to where I was in one day, so I wasn’t going to get healthy in one day, either. I stuck with it and began to see weight loss and increase in strength.” Studio manager Wendy Gray feels that nothing can compare to seeing so many people determined to transform their lives. “OTF helps change people’s lives from the inside out. Our OTbeat system helps track their heart rate during the workout and they can see real-time results,” Wendy says. “Not only do the members get the best workout in the country, but they also get the support they need to tackle life’s battles and to keep pushing them to be their best.” OTF is a science-based workout that uses technology to measure performance, producing the most impactful workout possible in just one hour. Twelve minutes in the Orange Zone raises your heart rate and burns more calories for up to 24 hours. The unique combination of science, coaching and technology combine to maximize metabolism and calories burned, and helps clients get the best results. Josh has lost over 100 pounds since he joined OTF, and his workout routine is now an important part of his life. “Starting off my day with OTF, it motivates me to make good choices,” he says. “It’s a motivator to keep that mindset and stay strong.” Alicia had a similar experience as soon as she joined OTF. She has been attending classes at the OTF studio for just over six months and has lost 22 pounds. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C L E V E L A N D C O UN T Y

“Even if you’re in good health, committing to a fitness routine only helps us get better, in our physical health, mental health and in our day-to-day life. We’re never too old to make that commitment to ourselves,” Alicia adds. “To the parents out there, putting your health as a priority is hard. Stuff always gets in the way, but keep fighting for yourself. Everyone in your family benefits from you spending an hour a few times a week to take care of yourself.” “The coaches are there to help you meet your goal and push you in your own specific way,” Josh adds. “It’s not just working out. The coaches are on the journey with you, and they are talking about nutrition, your life, your struggles and providing the help that you need. It can be a tool that can be a total life changer for you.” “OTF is the perfect regimen for anyone who is looking for something to get active, to find a community, to reach a personal goal, or maybe just to clear the mind,” Coach Aspen Neely says. “Whether you are a professional athlete or have never seen a gym in your life, I’ll lead the way to being the best version of you.” Reflecting on her time with OTF, Alicia says the program has helped her overcome obstacles and learn more about herself. “Sometimes you need to conquer something unexpected to realize you can conquer other things in life,” she concludes. “I realize now that I’m capable of more than I ever thought I was.”

Debuting this month at Organic Squeeze, the Ginger + Greens Smoothie contains nutrient-dense ingredients like avocado, ginger and greens to keep you fueled and empowered for the day ahead. Organic avocado is a good source of omega-3s and healthy fats, which can help keep you full between meals. It also contains ginger, which is helpful for that post-holiday bloat. Organic ginger has also been known to help reduce inflammation and aide in gut health. Organic spinach aids in detoxification, is high in fiber, and is a good source of iron and magnesium. 54
