I have gained passion and confidence for basketball following the many challenges I had faced throughout the year after losing my dad/coach. Academically, I have maintained a high GPA.

Personal highlights?

My mother’s name is Amanda Belden and my late father’s name is Oscar Wren Sr. I have one brother, Oscar Wren Jr., and one sister, Kaleah Wren. I started playing basketball at the age of 6. In my free time I like to hang out with friends and family or draw.

How do you maintain balance?

Balancing life, school and sports can be a challenge. My No. 1 priority is my education, but I am blessed because playing sports allows me to spend time with my friends and allows my family to be involved.

Plans for the future?

I don’t have a college in mind now; however, I do plan on majoring in psychology or sports psychology. After college, I hope to use my degree to work while also traveling the world.

I recently auditioned for Wind Ensemble for Band and was accepted into it; it was something my brother did, and I wanted to continue something he is proud of.

Personal highlights?

I was born on Feb. 19, 2008. I am the youngest of three brothers and my mother and father are Eddie Tang and Mai Bui. I participate in Men’s Soccer and Band. I enjoy video games.

How do you maintain balance?

Balancing life, school and sports is difficult, but I also try to be patient and have to choose to sacrifice time for things of importance.

Plans for the future?

I am most likely going to attend an in-state college, where I will most likely pursue a career in engineering and robotics.

At the time of this writing, Halloween is barely in the rearview window and Thanksgiving is still almost three weeks away. That's why we were thrilled when we learned that Selah, a 540-acre New Urbanism Community just south of Norman, had already decorated their community for the holidays. (See cover, related photo above, and feature inside, p 26.) Selah invites guests to their community on weekend evenings for an experience straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie. Igloos are available to rent for a festive night out and holiday movies are shown on big screens behind the restaurant, synchronized to over 250,000 Christmas lights—all lit by a glorious 50’ live Christmas tree! I plan to visit soon; maybe we'll cross paths! 'Tis the season for giving. Cleveland County City Lifestyle writer Lindsey Davies shares a list of her four favorite nonprofits in this issue. We hope you'll consider giving to one or more of these or an area charity of your choosing. You have the power to make the holidays a little bit merrier for some of your less fortunate neighbors. I recently had the opportunity to stay a night at Norman's newest boutique hotel, courtesy of the management. The NOUN opened Sept. 22 to praise from members of both the town and gown communities. It's sure to be a huge hit for Sooners football fans visiting town during home games as well as other visitors who will enjoy staying so close to Campus Corner and campus. For more information, see story, p 44. You'll also learn about a new shared workspace designed to serve as an incubator for new small businesses that True Sky Credit Union opened in 2021 on South Western Ave. Hangar 46 serves as an anchor in a rapidly growing business community. In doing so, these locally owned businesses will become a large portion of the amenities Selah has to offer, keeping yearly fees and dues of the homeowner and taxpayers at a minimum. During this era of national and global unrest, Selah is designed to offer a simpler, safer, more ethical way of life. The national average green space that is “protected” by any given developer is only 15%. But what happens when a local family who cares about the land becomes the developer? An astounding 50% of the land is preserved in this community, while homesites and commercial space are created around the existing topography. Not only is this out of respect to our Earth, but

For more than 75 years, True Sky Credit Union has served the Oklahoma City metro area with all the products and services you would expect from a full-service financial institution. As a not-forprofit, member-owned financial institution, True Sky has a focus on empowering the communities where their members live and work. “We originally were associated with the Federal Aviation Administration, and our credit union opened primarily to serve members of the airline industry,” explains Diana Rawdon, True Sky’s vice president of commercial lending. “So, in line with our history, many of our credit union’s slogans and themes are tied to the airline industry. Once we opened to everyone in the Oklahoma City metro area, we have stayed true to our roots, while still opening up to a wider audience.” Historically, restrictions on commercial lending limited the impact that credit unions could make in the business communities where they operated. As those restrictions changed, True Sky has focused on supporting entrepreneurs and providing resources to help grow small businesses. “We love the rapidly growing business community in Moore, Norman and south Oklahoma City,” Diana continues. “We decided to give part of our operations center building back to our members and create a space unlike any other in the area. Our idea for Hangar 46 was born.” In 2021, the credit union opened Hangar 46, a shared workspace designed to serve as an incubator for new small businesses. Located at 9301 South Western, Hangar 46 serves as an anchor in a rapidly growing business community. “It is called Hangar 46 because our credit union opened

in 1946,” Diana adds. “Our whole goal is to help launch new businesses. We didn’t want small business owners to feel like they had to go to downtown Oklahoma City to gain access to a shared workspace. We wanted to offer something to support small businesses right in the heart of Cleveland County.” The space reflects True Sky’s airline motif, with aeronautical themes and conference room names such as “alpha” and “delta,” that pull directly from the airline industry. Hangar 46 is designed to be a very professional, modern workspace that provides access to the latest technology, collaboration space, individual workstations, conference rooms, a coffee bar and many more amenities. The vision is that the workspace will serve as a bridge to help small business owners transition into their own permanent space. “We want Hangar 46 to be a space that gives small businesses a more confident, professional appearance. If they need to meet with new clients, they aren’t limited to meeting in a noisy coffee shop or in their personal residence,” Diana explains. “They can hold meetings in person or utilize the latest web-based conferencing technology. The space is designed with them in mind.” Diana explains that Hangar 46 is available to all True Sky Credit Union members. It is designed to be a coworking space, and not designed to be a financial burden to its members. “The charge to join is only to cover overhead expenses, and it is about one-third of the cost of many coworking spaces,” she says. “We work to make it affordable, both for small business owners and even people who work remotely that sometimes need an office space.” CONTINUED > D ECEMBER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . In addition to a professional workspace, True Sky provides access to executive-level personnel to all their Hangar 46 members. Top-level executives in the credit union are available to share their expertise, answer questions and provide guidance to small business owners. “Members of the Hangar can schedule meetings with our senior leaders to discuss issues, ask questions and gain access to information that they wouldn’t otherwise have,” Diana says. “If they are struggling with anything from how to set up or structure their business, or how to provide benefits, or the best ways to keep their data secure, our leaders can help them find answers. It is so valuable for burgeoning small business owners to have access to upper-level executives to help them learn to structure and nurture their business.” True Sky has partnered with the Oklahoma Small Business Development Center to bring even more resources to Hangar 46 members. The SBDC assists small-business owners across the state of Oklahoma by providing no charge, one-on-one business management advising, strategic planning, marketing advice, sales strategies and more. The SBDC is available to guide Hangar 46 members through the startup process, prepare existing businesses for growth and assist in the development of financial projections, as well as explore small-business financing programs. “Our partnership with the SBDC really helps entrepreneurs take their startups to the next level. The partnership is all about helping small businesses take an idea from infancy to development,” Diana adds. “The SBDC service offerings are vast and our training program is constantly evolving to serve the needs of Oklahoma small businesses. We look forward to future collaborations with the True Sky Credit Union to assist entrepreneurs seeking assistance,” said Oklahoma SBDC State Director Michele Hockersmith. “Small-business owners are great at whatever they do. However, they may not have a business background, and managing employees may not be something you learn in school,” Diana explains. To date, Diana says that the small businesses that are utilizing Hangar 46 have found it to be invaluable, and the space has allowed them to learn many of the crucial basics of small business ownership. It has also provided opportunities for members to collaborate with other members who have similar businesses or work in similar industries. Hello. I’m Derek Geiges, owner of Solid Rock Personal Training in northwest Norman. Solid Rock is a personal training studio that focuses on strength and conditioning training so people can live an active lifestyle outside of the gym. We serve predominantly busy working professionals who want to lose weight; increase energy, strength and cardiovascular health; boost confidence; and improve mental health. Our mission is simple: we want to help people LOOK GOOD, MOVE WELL & FEEL GREAT! As we approach 2023, I wanted to share something I am passionate about. Being in the health and fitness space, I have seen thousands of people set good intentions every year (New Year’s resolutions), only to fall short within two-four weeks. If this is you, I would challenge you to take a different approach for 2023 and turn your “good intentions” into SUCCESS! I have traveled all over the country to other personal training studios that are helping people make changes that last a lifetime. I am here to tell you that it’s not complicated at all. The simpler you make it, the less fatigue and burnout, meaning you will be more likely to stick to it. The key is habits! I would challenge you to pick one habit to master, and once you have mastered it, only then add another habit. Oftentimes, people try to do too much too fast. Instead, I want you to play the long game; it is ultimately how you will achieve your

health and fitness goals. A habit is something that is a “regular tendency or practice.” Once you don’t have to put too much mental energy into it, then it is most likely a habit. From my personal experience— and the hundreds of people we have helped develop life changing habits at Solid Rock—a minimum of 90 days is a general guideline. I suggest picking one habit a year, mastering it, and then adding another habit the next year. This is the long game, making small adjustments to your health year in and year out. So now the question is, what habit should you start with? Below, I outline five habits that the healthiest and fittest people in the world do on a consistent basis. At Solid Rock, we have included this as a part of our onboarding process and have defined it as our “Solid Start Steps!” 1) 7-9 hours of sleep per night 2) Half your body weight in ounces of water per day 3) Whole nutrients (lean cuts of meat, fruit, vegetables) 4) Proper portion size 5) Strength training a minimum of three to four times per week and cardiovascular training a minimum of two to three times per week I have a heart for taking a proactive approach to health and wellness and want to see our community become a healthier place. THE NOUN Visitors to the University of Oklahoma campus during home football games who choose to stay in town overnight—as well as other visitors to OU and Norman throughout the year—now have a new choice that’s both convenient and elegant. The NOUN Hotel opened on Sept. 22, and was met with praise from members of both the town and gown communities. Scott Lambert, NOUN general managing partner, recalled how the unusual name for the new, independently owned boutique hotel located on OU’s historic Campus Corner came about. “Chris [Christine Lambert, NOUN shareholder/ concept and design coordinator] and I shared ideas on names for weeks!” he recalled “One night while drinking red wine, Chris suggested NOUN, like SoHo in New York, and standing for North of University. We immediately knew that was the name, and after another glass of wine we realized that ‘NOUN’ also includes OU, and our location and inspiration have the University of Oklahoma at the very heart! The name stuck, and we couldn’t be happier. “The NOUN stands for North of University and is about People, Place and Ideas,” he added. Beside Scott and Chris, the other member of the NOUN leadership team is Ronnie Krodel, general manager. At the invitation of the NOUN Hotel leadership team, I (with my niece and Cleveland County City Lifestyle writer/photographer Lindsey Davies and her 5-year-old son, Liam) enjoyed an

overnight stay in one of the hotel’s bedrooms. The fourth-floor space offers a nice day and night view looking down University Boulevard to Boyd Street and beyond. Some of the amenities we especially enjoyed was the complimentary valet parking, the comfortable beds and location on Campus Corner, with its many shops and restaurants, and the beautiful OU campus, known for its Cherokee Gothic-designed historic buildings as well as its many sculptures, fountains and gardens. Scott notes that all 92 of the hotel’s guest rooms are furnished with Smart TV technology, handmade artwork, walk-in showers and luxurious Italian linen. Guests may choose from two suites, 24 king bedrooms and 66 double queen bedrooms. Oklahoman-centric art subjects, such as the state’s animals, the bison and the scissor-tailed flycatcher, are found throughout the hotel, and every guest room has a crimson touch as a reminder that “There’s Only One Oklahoma.” The NOUN Hotel boasts over 3,900 square feet of stylized community spaces, including patio seating for outdoor events and meeting rooms with 14-foot ceilings—perfect for weddings, business gatherings and special occasions of all kinds. “Our lobby is three times the comparable size for a hotel that has 92 rooms and was designed as such to bring people together to share ideas and celebrate life over ample space,” Scott said. “We want the NOUN to be a place where everyone feels comfortable and welcomed.”

Overnight guests as well as visitors can avail themselves of the NOUN’s two cocktail destinations and one culinary concept. The Supper Club, a bistro-style dining destination located off the lobby, is open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. It serves up refined American dishes that celebrate bold flavors alongside craft cocktails. During our visit, my I ordered the Coq au Vin, a tasty concoction of roasted heirloom chicken breast, red wine, mushrooms and pearl onions, served with a Pistolet loaf. Lindsey ordered Potato Gnocchi— braised oxtail, scallion and fontin—off the appetizers list. Also off the appetizers list, we ordered the Summer Flatbread: asparagus, ricotta cream, boiled egg, fontina, arugula and balsamic vinegar. The dinner menu features a nice selection of soups and salads as well as appetizers; next time I visit, I plan to try the Heirloom Tomatoes, made with bread-and-butter pickled garlic, shaved fennel, parmesan crumble and Banyuls vinegar. Entrees include dishes featuring salmon and striped bass, pork chops, duck, steak and short ribs, offering something for just about anyone. Additionally, the Supper Club offers two “Plates for Two” specials: a 40-oz. Tomahawk ribeye and broiled salmon. The Supper Club is helmed by Chef Greg Lopez, who has worked in a variety of locales around the world. In 2018, he served as an executive chef in China, developing and introducing Western food to a culture that had yet to experience it. He was executive chef at Hyatt Hotels in Seattle from 2003-2014. Guests and visitors may unwind at ONE Bar, a late-night lounge and restaurant overlooking campus on NOUN’s second f loor.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
