OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Jake Tadlock
NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
Recent sports or academic highlight?
Last football season, I was awarded the Heart of a Champion award by the Norman North High School football coaching staff. I am a member of the National Honors Society and I hold a 4.16 Weighted GPA.
Personal highlights?
I am the son of Mark Tadlock and the late Marcia Tadlock. I play high school football and soccer.. A few things to know about me are that I am an avid Sooners football fan and I enjoy dancing and listening to music.
How do you maintain balance?
The most important thing for me when it comes to balancing school, sports and social life is to have a strong support system around me. Whether that is my family or my friends, I am blessed to always feel that I have someone to turn to if I feel overwhelmed with everything that I have on my plate.
Plans for the future?
I have always been intrigued by the STEM fields. Engineering and medical sciences are very interesting to me, and I will probably get a degree in a discipline associated with the two. As for what college I am going to attend, I am undecided.

NORMAN NORTH HIGH SCHOOL
Recent sports or academic highlight?
Last fall, I was selected to be on the All-District 6A-1 Team for first base after being recognized as an honorable mention the year prior. I am a member of the National Honors Society and have managed a 4.0 GPA throughout my high school career.
Personal highlights?
My parents are Cindy and Jeff Hanska. Their support has allowed me to play travel softball at a competitive level since I was 7 years old. Aside from athletics and academics, I enjoy traveling to new places with my friends and family.
How do you maintain balance?
Personally, the key to balancing life, school and sports has always been finding something that is constant. My constants in life are my home, my friends and my family. I know that no matter what life may throw at me, I will always have these things to turn to keep myself grounded.
Plans for the future?
I plan to attend Oklahoma City Community College and earn my associate degree. I then hope to attend a larger university and major in a STEM field.

We have tentative plans for a fall vacation, though. Welcome to our annual Kids & Pets issue! Our cover story shines the spotlight on an area couple and their extended fur family, French bulldogs Bandit and Bear [see photo this page]. Dr. Ben Bigbie, a dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, and his wife, Amber, a dentist, have dedicated a room in their home for the personable dogs, who wear hats and bow ties during birthday celebrations and have their own stockings at Christmas. If you haven’t yet taken your summer vacay, or just like to take your dog/s with you to parks and other places, you might want to check out area veterinarian Dr. Boyer’s tips on caring for your fur friend outdoors when the temps climb into the red zone. THE ANTICIPATION WAS BUILDING BACKSTAGE AS THE PERFORMERS READIED TO PERFORM THEIR SONG IN FRONT OF A RAUCOUS CROWD OF 6,500 THEATRE ENTHUSIASTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. This moment was the ultimate prize for kids from Norman and Moore who attended the 2020 Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta as part of The Studio of The Sooner Theatre. When you think of fierce competition, most often it’s on a field of play of one sport or another. But the kids who took the stage triumphantly on that day in Atlanta were doing what they and their peers in the audience are most passionate about—musical theater.

It’s not unusual to get to talk with the head of Disney Theatrics, or a rising Broadway star while at the festival. “The second year we went, Ben Platt was there to sing a song from a new show that was in workshops at the time but was going to be moving to Broadway. That show was ‘Dear Evan Hansen,’ and we were some of the first to hear him sing ‘Waving Through A Window’ from that show,” Jennifer noted. “He was with the kids at the festival all weekend. He was walking the halls, popping into workshops and adjudication rooms, and that’s how they all are—very accessible.”

Doctors Bigbie aren’t the only members of the family who are well loved in the medical community.
“All the girls at work want Bandit and Bear to come in with me,” Amber jokes. “They love seeing the dogs, so they are pretty popular. Our vet appointments always
take forever, too, because all the staff have to love on them every time we take them in.” The Bigbie bulldogs have very distinct temperaments, making each dog a unique member of the family. Bear, now 21/2 years old, is sweet, charming, goofy and easily motivated by food. Bandit is nearly 12 years old, and is the smart, stubborn alpha dog of the household. “Bandit’s obedience level goes as far as he wants it to,” explains Ben. “I trained him to do tricks, but he will only do them if he is so inclined.” One of the Bigbie’s favorite anecdotes of their dogs was
when Bear chewed up an orange-colored Sharpie marker.

BANDIT
“Bandit immediately came and tattled on Bear, and sure enough, Bear had a bright orange tongue,” Amber shares. “But then we found some tell-tale orange marker on Bandit’s paws, so we knew he wasn’t totally innocent either!” In April 2020, the family received a shock when Bandit became ill and ended up requiring emergency veterinary care. Bandit was ultimately diagnosed with cancer and underwent a splenectomy. His veterinarian gave him less than 3 months to live. “More than a year later and he’s still doing great,” Amber says. “When we thought he only had a few months to live, I started making him roast beef every Sunday. Now he has just come to expect it.” Ben explains that only 10% of dogs with Bandit’s diagnosis make it more than a year, and attributes Bandit’s incredible survival to his headstrong bulldog personality. “He’s just stubborn enough that he wants to stick around so Bear won’t get his toys,” he quips. In the Bigbie house, the dogs have their own room, wear special hats and bow ties during birthday celebrations and have stockings at Christmastime. “Honestly, they have their own room because they snore super loud,” Ben explains. “We just tell them it is bedtime and they go to bed. Bandit gets cold, so he likes to wear pajamas in the wintertime. They just have no idea that they are dogs.” Amber encourages others who are interested in the breed to consider bringing one of these smart, funny dogs into their household. “You do have to be very careful with Frenchies in Oklahoma,” she adds. “They can’t cool themselves well enough in summer, so they can get overheated in the Oklahoma heat. They also can’t swim, so you have to be careful if they are around any bodies of water, even something as small as a koi pond. They are like little kids; you have to make them come inside when it’s hot and make sure they have on their life jackets.” Looking back, Ben can’t imagine his life without Amber and their Frenchies. “I fell in love with them on the very first date,” he concludes. “I always thought I was a Labrador guy, but now I can’t imagine anything else but this wonderful life with our French bulldogs.”

JOY HAMPTON, PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER FOR CLEVELAND COUNTY, CREDITS NORMAN FARM MARKET MANAGER KATE COOPER WITH PUTTING NEW LIFE INTO AN ALREADY THRIVING AND ESTABLISHED FARM MARKET THROUGH LEVERAGING PARTNERSHIPS AND INCREASING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. “From hosting blood drives and story time for kids with Cleveland County deputies, to cooking demonstrations, a partnership with Loveworks for young entrepreneurs to present their wares at the market (Business Boot Up), Kate has made the Norman Farm Market one of the most engaging experiences in the state,” Joy said. “She books live music and works with the vendors association to set up special events like Donuts with

MANAGER, CLEVELAND COUNTY’S NORMAN FARM MARKET An entrepreneur at heart, Kate Cooper moved from Colorado to Oklahoma with her three children in 2016 to start a small farm. While she was growing her farm, Kate was also growing her local farm market—where she discovered her passion for helping small farmers feed the state with sustainable, ethically produced foods. She began managing the Norman Farm Market in 2020. Kate holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and is working on her master’s degree in counseling, with the hope of incorporating her love for helping people into her love for farming.
