Writer Brooke Barnett said she never laughed as much during an interview as she did for this story, in which Cameron's parents, Chad and Helen Bartlett, lead pastors of Norman’s GoChurch.tv, also participated. Since Earth Day falls in April, we've also included one eco piece. It's a listicle showcasing some of the upscale options in the area for those who love to look good without spending a fortune, while also helping save the planet! We asked (via social media) for people's suggestions for upscale businesses that offer like-new vintage or second-hand, brand-name clothing and accessories. Each has its own fashion niche; we've included their websites so you can check them out yourself. Traditional IRA vs Roth IRA WHICH IS BEST? BOTH EXCELLENT WAYS TO SAVE FOR RETIREMENT

SO, YOU’RE CONSIDERING INVESTING IN AN IRA AS A WAY TO SAVE FOR RETIREMENT. Great! But which is better: a Traditional IRA or a Roth IRA? Read on to learn about some of the differences between the two. Still unsure? Consulting a financial advisor is always a good idea; I’d love to discuss all your options with you.

Traditional IRA vs ROTH IRA: What’s the Difference? When you’re comparing IRAs, there are three major actions to consider: Contributions, Accumulation and Distributions. Contributions in Traditional IRAs are tax-deductible in the year made, while there are no tax deductions for contributions for Roth IRAs. This

HEARTLAND WEALTH MANAGEMENT

is often why people prefer Traditional IRAs. The

second

action

is

accumulation.

Accumulation of earnings in both Traditional

and Roth are not taxed while inside of the

account. This allows for your investments to remain untaxed as long as it stays invested. Since both accounts share the tax deferral, there is no advantage for either account type. The last action is the distribution from the IRA. For traditional IRAs, this is where taxes play its role. Distributions made from Traditional IRAs are fully taxed as ordinary income, while distributions from Roth IRAs are distributed tax free. The easiest way to think about is, Traditional IRAs give you the tax benefits for the money in, or the money you are earning now, while the Roth IRA gives you tax benefits on the money coming out, or your future money.

20

Cleveland County Lifestyle | April 2021

What can I contribute? The 2021 combined annual contribution limit for Roth and Traditional IRAs is $6,000 ($7,000 if you’re

nknk

age 50 or older)—unchanged from 2020. Roth IRA contribution limits are reduced or eliminated at higher incomes. Traditional IRA contributions are deductible, but the amount you can deduct may be reduced or eliminated if you or your spouse is covered by a retirement plan at work. Lower-income taxpayers may be eligible for the “saver’s credit” if they contribute to an IRA.

Other investment options? IRAs are excellent vehicles to save for retirement. But to take full advantage of these accounts and avoid any trouble or penalties, be sure to follow the contribution limits, income rules and deduction limits. Due to these complexities, it may be best to contact a financial advisor to ensure you’re maximizing your IRA.

By purchasing recycled clothing and accessories, you have the added satisfaction of knowing you’re helping save the planet. Many of the shops also allow you to get back some of your investment in clothing and accessories by purchasing those items you no longer like, have no further use for, or that don’t fit. We’ve compiled a list of just a few of the places you may wish to check out. It’s not an exhaustive list; we included places that were recommended and that offered a more upscale inventory. However, know that there are many other options out there, including thrift shops that specialize in helping out those members of our community who need a helping hand. Know that your donations to these shops are much needed and appreciated—just not the focus here.

A Chemical-Free Home

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

NEW SURGICAL, LAB OPTIONS MAKE MOST SKIN CANCERS CURABLE

ARTICLE STACI ELDER HENSLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY

BASKING IN THE SUNSHINE IS SOMETHING MOST OF US ENJOY, AND INDEED IT DOES HAVE SOME BENEFITS. However, too much unprotected sunshine can have health consequences, often in the form of skin cancers. The good news is that the vast majority of these cancers can be cured, thanks to earlier detection and extremely precise surgical procedures, said Dr. Ben Bigbie, board certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. MOHS SURGERY The vast majority of skin cancers are treated surgically, and the gold standard of care is Mohs surgery. Bigbie is a member of the American Society for Mohs Surgery, and is one of the few dermatologic surgeons in Oklahoma whose practice has an in-house laboratory, which allows him to offer this state-of-the-art treatment. Mohs surgery involves removing the cancerous growth and a surrounding ring of tissue, which is then immediately examined in the lab to determine if all the cancerous cells have been removed. If not, then another small ring of tissue can be removed and examined, and the process repeated, if necessary. Once the Mohs procedure is complete, both doctor and patient can be reassured that the

remaining tissue is free of cancer, and much more of the normal skin is left intact. This process is tremendous improvement over older methods where the growth was surgically removed, then sent out to a separate laboratory. Both doctor and patient had to wait on results, and if not all the cancer cells were removed, the procedure had to be repeated. THE TRIFECTA OF SKIN CANCERS Most skin cancers fall into three basic categories: basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas. The first two types are very seldom fatal, while it’s melanomas that give skin cancer its deadly reputation. The good news is that most skin cancers are 99% curable, if caught and treated early with Mohs surgery. Skin cancer can strike at any age, Bigbie said, noting that he has treated patients ranging in age from 15 to 100. “The average skin cancer patient is over 50 and Caucasian, since fairskinned people are more susceptible,” he said. “But I’m also seeing more patients in their late 20s and early 30s, who are developing skin cancers caused by early UV exposure.” Anyone age 30 or older is encouraged to have an annual skin exam, he added.
