Dear Neighbor, As I sit here writing this, my son Tahrohon, II, fresh off a flag football championship for 5th and 6th grade, is already planning and day-dreaming his first big touchdown catch for Community Christian next season. My daughter Audrey Grace is now a sophomore and a proud cheerleader, leading her CCS squad to a 2nd place regional trophy. I'm just pleased she isn’t asking me for the keys to her first car yet. My wife Devon is finishing up with her students at the University of Oklahoma. She passes by the door and stops a moment to offer a loving word before heading down the hall, effortlessly changing hats from OU professor to Super-Mom. We have been married 20 years and still her positivity and kindness amaze me. There is no fire crackling, but my heart is full of holiday cheer thinking about the impact this community has had on my family. As a fellow Cleveland County Resident, we are blessed to have neighbors like you who care so much for each other and who truly embody the meaning of Christmas. As we bid farewell to 2020, we here at The Shannon household pray for a prosperous and joyful 2021 for everyone. We also recognize that not every neighbor is as fortunate this Christmas. If you know of a family that we can bless with Christmas dinner, please reach out to my team at marketing@ccb.bank. "Little things go a long way.” Thank you to you all for teaching me that. Until we can see each other again, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

GALLERY OF HOMES FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS The Gallery of Homes at Rivendell announced this year’s fundraising event raised more than $89,000 to benefit its two nonprofit partners, The Sparrow Project and Moore Faith Medical Clinic. Money was raised through event admission proceeds, sponsor underwriting and a monetary gift from Jim R. Daniel, vice chairman of BancFirst. Longtime OKC developer P.B. Odom III multiplied all admission proceeds from the event by providing a 2:1 matching donation on all ticket sales through the P.B. Odom III Family Foundation.

Between 1927-1929, six Kiowa artists created many paintings of Kiowa culture at OU. Spencer Asah, James Auchiah, Jack Hokeah, Stephen Mopope, Lois Smoky and Monroe Tsa-toke comprise what is now referred to as the Kiowa Six. Kiowa Agency: Stories of the Six explores the ways in which they acted as strong agents of Kiowa cultural preservation during and after their OU residencies.

Dr. Craig, along with Drs. Ryan Streight and Heather Kierl and the rest of the CSO staff, feel they have a responsibility to make a bigger impact where they can. “We don’t take that responsibility lightly. Philanthropy is one of our core values and missions as a company. We search out organizations we can partner with and support that are making a substantial impact and helping the people that make up the community.” And that is how they discovered Center for Children and Families Inc. “CCFI’s mission, to ensure that children have a safe and secure environment in which to grow and thrive, fits perfectly with our core values,” Craig says. “CCFI accepts donations, provides volunteer opportunities throughout the year and hosts their ‘Hands and Hearts’ annual fundraiser. We have provided support in various ways over the years. We know that our support goes a long way to help them achieve their goals to heal children, empower youth and strengthen families. We are blessed to be able to support even a small part of what they do. Please check them out if you are interested in helping a tremendous organization!” ABOUT CCFI Center for Children and Families Inc. is a trauma-informed agency that serves children and their families throughout Cleveland County who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing, child abuse, neglect or other adverse experiences. While its continuum of care is broad, with services ranging in intensity, its focus has always been to ensure that all children have safe, secure, nurturing environments and caring adults in their lives, explained Amanda Pulis, CCFI marketing and communications director. Amanda noted that approximately 25% of the nonprofit’s annual revenue is acquired through individual and corporate donations from the community. “While this amount varies from month to month, on average, we need close to $37,000 per month in order to best serve families in need and cover the demand for our services,” Amanda said. “In addition to sustainable income from community members who’ve made multi-year pledges, CCFI also relies on in-kind donations of diapers, school supplies, pre-packaged snacks and other items to help offset costs.” In addition to financial help and in-kind donations, as noted above and on their website, Cleveland County Lifestyle readers can help by volunteering with CCFI. “Volunteers are critical to the success of our agency and truly make a difference in a child’s life. We offer a variety of opportunities, many of which are available year-round, for individuals and groups who are looking to help further our mission,” Amanda said. “These opportunities include mentoring children after school at Boys & Girls Club of Norman, packing diapers CONTINUED >

“We like to invest in our community,” said Chad Ernst, who heads the construction side of the business. “There are a lot of national (apartment) chains out there right now. We are small and locally owned. We understand the people we lease to, and we become close with them because we live in the same community.” WHY CARLSTONE? prepared from scratch by an on-site chef from a multi-page menu. Breakfast is served all day; residents can eat at whatever time they prefer; and the dining team reaches out to each new resident to learn their individual food preferences and requirements. Visitors are welcome to dine with residents at any time, for only a $5.50 fee. “We know how important food is,” Judy Ernst said. “When we tour, we offer a complimentary meal, so people who are considering renting with us can see what it’s like.” ENTHUSIASTIC ENDORSEMENTS Resident Bill Comach, who’s lived in Norman off and on since 1958, moved into his Carlstone apartment two months ago, and said that while he was initially skeptical, he’s thoroughly enjoying his new digs. “I’m extremely happy, especially with the excellence in the kitchen,” he said. “Everything is made fresh, but one of the unique benefits is that they have no meal hours, which most places do. That is a big deal for me. I like to stay up late and I run errands in the morning, which means in most places I would have missed the lunch hour and I would never get breakfast,” he said. Comach also praised the technical support staff, who helped him with some issues and saved him the cost of a service call. “The technical support is incredible,” he said. “I just feel blessed to have found this place. I looked at every place around south Oklahoma City, Moore and Norman, and I can’t imagine finding an improvement on it.” INFORMATION & EXTRA HELP One final touch that Carlstone provides upon request, is assistance for new tenants who need to sell their home before moving in. The company works with local Realtor Darien Quattlebaum-Moore, who is certified as a senior real estate specialist. Carlsbad Management Services is located at 100 48th Ave NW. Information is available on the company website, CarlsbadOK.com, by emailing info@carlsbadok.com or calling 701.1411. “Moving from a house into a senior apartment is a huge life change,” Judy Ernst said. “People think they are giving up control or lowering their quality of life, but we’re making it so that they don’t.” Added Jones, “We all think of our retirement days and we think of nursing homes,” he said. “Here we are much more like a full-service resort.” 44

ARLY CHILDHOOD IS A TIME WHERE LEARNING IS BEST DONE THROUGH PLAY. Primrose School of Norman knows this, and uses a curriculum based in fun,

while developing the whole child. I spoke with Nosa Akhimiona,

The A

Ph.D., owner of Primrose School of Norman, to learn more about what they offer and what sets them apart in early education.

WHEN WAS PRIMROSE SCHOOL FOUNDED, AND BY WHOM? FOR WHAT PURPOSE? Primrose was founded in 1982 by Marcy and Paul Erwin. The vision of Primrose School is to deliver the best and most trusted early childhood education and childcare for families across America. Primrose School of Norman is one of several Primroses in the metro area. WHAT AGES DO YOU SERVE, AND CAN YOU SHARE A BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU OFFER? The school will accommodate up to 200 children and is currently enrolling children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. For children in kindergarten through fifth grade, Primrose School of Norman also offers before- and after-school care, as well as a fun, full-day Explorer Program that provides virtual learning support and a safe environment for students to engage in their schools’ online classes and complete their daily assignments. Primrose School of Norman also offers Go & Grow, a part-time program that provides a safe, healthy place for 3- and 4-year-olds to enlarge their circle of friends, build their social skills and develop their character and social-emotional skills through play, music and literature. Our teachers are highly qualified with either a bachelor’s or associate degree or a certificate in early childhood education. CAN YOU SHARE SOME ABOUT THE FOUNDERS AND OTHERS WHO HELPED MAKE PRIMROSE WHAT IT IS TODAY? I and my wife, Collette, are the local franchise owners, and we are excited to bring exceptional early learning experiences to children in the community. We have a background in medicine and business ownership, and we have two young sons. We are thrilled to be part of the Norman community and help provide young children with the right foundation for future learning and life. Being exposed to the Primrose experience in our children’s education, we became enthralled with the teaching method, unmatched curriculum and dedication to developing each child emotionally and cognitively. We understand the importance of instilling a love of learning during a child’s early years and believe this is essential to building a new generation of bright citizens. CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE FACILITIES, BOTH EDUCATIONAL PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF NORMAN 3220 Healthplex Drive, Norman 801.3301

AND RECREATIONAL? At 12,300 square feet, Primrose School of Norman features 11 classrooms and four secure, age-appropriate playgrounds. The learning and fun continues outdoors through gardening and nature activities in the school’s Primrose Patch garden.

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED) WHAT SETS THIS SCHOOL APART FROM THE OTHER PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN CLEVELAND COUNTY SERVING THESE AGE GROUPS? Children at Primrose School of Norman will benefit from the Primrose-exclusive, research-informed Balanced Learning approach, which blends purposeful play with nurturing guidance from teachers to encourage curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion. The thoughtfully designed curriculum is updated regularly and puts children first in every lesson. These age-appropriate, integrated learning experiences are guided by teachers who are dedicated to helping each child foster a lifelong love of learning. WHAT ARE THE SCHOOL'S CREDENTIALS? CogniaTM Corporation Systems Accreditation represents recognized standards of quality that impact children’s lifelong learning and support young learners in the highest regard. Cognia’s Performance Accreditation for Early Learning Schools motivates schools to continuously improve on behalf of the young children they serve. Cognia considers the whole institution—leadership, the programs, the cultural context, and the community of stakeholders—to determine how well these components align to meet the needs of students. Experience Review is a self-study, continuous improvement process used to strengthen a commitment to excellence in all areas of leading and managing a Primrose School. We pay rigorous attention to policies and procedures to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality to staff, children, and parents. We strive to experience the school through the eyes of the children and parents. WHAT HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES ARE YOU USING TO PREVENT COVID-19? During this time of enhanced concern, the health and safety of children and staff at Primrose School of Norman remains the highest priority. The school follows stringent health and safety requirements, maintains all protocols as outlined by local and state health departments and licensing agencies, and monitors CDC recommendations to help ensure the safety of staff and children. The health and safety measures at the school include, but are not limited to, frequent disinfecting and sanitizing of the facility, classroom materials and equipment; frequent handwashing by children and staff; touchless check-ins; required wearing of face masks by staff; temperature checks for children and staff upon entry; disinfecting playground equipment before and after each use; and professional deep cleaning of the facility every weekend. WHAT IS PRIMROSE’S COMMUNITY IMPACT? The construction of the school contributed approximately $1.5 million to the local economy and will create 50 jobs once at full capacity. The school is actively hiring for teacher and staff positions. Additionally, our plan is to give back to the community through annual events that provide students the opportunity to practice generosity firsthand. 48
