FEW THINGS CAN MAKE US LAUGH AND SMILE AS MUCH. Just look at YouTube, where videos of babies and children and all manner of animals number in the thousands. Maybe because they are so natural and true to themselves. Maybe its their innocence and joie de vivre. Certainly, there’s plenty of slapstick humor to be found. Whatever the reasons, we think you’ll especially enjoy perusing this, our Kids & Pets issue. In one of our feature stories this month, we shine the light on an organization called Fetch Fido A Flight that takes dogs that might otherwise be euthanized in area animal shelters and flies them to areas where they are more likely to find loving families. In another, the spotlight is placed on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cleveland County, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Understanding the natural affinity between animals and children, they use dogs in their social media campaigns, and encourage their “Bigs” to bring along their dogs on visits with their “Littles.” Other stories include: + a popular area veterinarian shares how one can achieve a healthy lifestyle for self and pet, a real win-win scenario + a local bank that offers mobile banking technology that parents can use to help their teens learn the basics of personal financial responsibility + an orthodontics practice that takes seriously the work of improving the smiles of its patients, ranging in age from 7 years through adult + OU’s student-run Food Pantry, which is helping meet the sustenance needs of students, staff and faculty

Fe t c h Fi d o a Flight
I HAVE HEARD OF DOGS WHO LIKE TO RIDE IN CARS WITH THEIR HEADS OUT OF THE WINDOWS AND STANDING IN THE BEDS OF TRUCKS, BUT BUYING A PLANE TICKET FOR ONE WAS CERTAINLY A NEW ONE. But dogs on a plane are a real thing, and it’s for a great cause. For the price of airfare, one can save the life of a dog or cat that would otherwise be euthanized. This is a flight just for animals who are ferried on cargo planes to locations where they will be adopted. The organization Fetch Fido A Flight has been working tirelessly to save Oklahoma animals from being put down due to the overcrowded shelters across the state. Many of these shelters are forced to kill these animals after just a few days to make room new ones. Vikki Smith of Oklahoma City has made it her mission to save as many of these animals as possible. In her efforts to make her desire a reality, Vikki began seeking places where a need for pets was in demand. She found those places in other states, especially those in the Pacific Northwest. It turns out that many shelters within the United States actually have a shortage of animals to adopt out. To date, the organization has purchased 20 trips saving 1,654 animals. Vikki, a transplant to Oklahoma from California four years ago, immediately noticed how the stray animal population seemed out of control. She realized that social media always had posts of people finding animals, but rarely owners who claimed them. She began checking shelter websites and realized they were full, too. She knew she had to devise a way she could save these animals. The nonprofit organization Fetch Fido A Flight was born. “I can take as many animals shelters can send me because the need is there. It’s just money that holds us up. This is about doing the right thing

FETCH FIDO A FLIGHT
(CON TI N U ED)
Volunteer Sandi Boies loves on a puppy who is about to be loaded in a crate for the trip.
No salaries are paid as only volunteers are involved. Vikki explained that the cost of one flight ranges between $15,000 and $21,000, depending on certain variables. It ranges from $150 to $180 per animal to get it relocated. She added that if salaries were paid out, it would affect how many animals can be saved. There are about 100 animals per flight, depending on how many can be crated together. Their next flight is scheduled for July 6 out of Atlantic Aviation at Will Rogers World Airport. They hope to have between 100 and 120 animals on that flight. “I am very picky as to where I send these animals. I make sure that I am not sending an animal to a place where it will be euthanized,” Vikki said. She verifies through each shelter that receives the animals that they are actually adopted out. To help support Fetch Fido A Flight, there are of course the tax-deductible donations that can be made through their website. They can also be mailed to Fetch Fido A Flight, PO Box 1166, Edmond, OK 73083. In addition, the organization is always in need of people willing to foster these animals before the flights. Due to the overcrowding shelters and the time it takes to organize a flight, there is a great need for homes to house these animals in the meantime. This information is also available at FetchFidoAFlight.com.

THESE ARE BUZZ WORDS AS OF LATE—“HEALTHY LIFESTYLE”— BUT THEY CAN MEAN SO MANY THINGS! It can mean anything from getting more rest, to intermittent fasting and eating more vegetables, to exercising three to five times per week, depending on who you talk to.
BUT LET’S FOCUS ON A PARTICULAR AREA INVOLVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THAT INCLUDES YOUR PET! STUDIES SHOW THAT THE BOND BETWEEN A DOG AND ITS OWNER CAN RIVAL ANY OTHER BOND, INCLUDING SIBLINGS, A SPOUSE AND EVEN THE KIDS! IF THAT’S SO, THEN LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WITH YOUR PET HAS POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT BOTH OWNER AND DOG … WIN-WIN! Take it from me, the veterinarian, there are far too many pets living overweight, eating inconsistent uncontrolled diets, having little to no regular exercise, and not socializing on a consistent basis, all of which contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle typically mirroring that of their owner. So why not take a look at some of the easy things to improve the health and well-being of both pet and owner? I’ve listed my four “basics.” These basic things may sound simple, but they are the building blocks for a happy, content and fun filled life with your pet, while you both enjoy a healthy lifestyle!

And this house certainly represents the “best of the best.” The exterior of this two-story home is striking, featuring white masonry accented with stonework along the bottom and beautiful wood accents. There’s a clean line of sight from the state-of-the-art kitchen to the large living area, which features a modern gas fireplace, large windows that give the space an abundance of natural light and makes the room appear even larger, and a cathedral ceiling with real-wood beams.

Marble counter tops, stainless appliances and sink, open shelving to display treasures, and plenty of cabinets make the kitchen both beautiful and useful.
The master bath features beautiful tiles, two rain shower heads and frameless shower doors.
No detail went untended in this house. Even the stair railing is sure to evoke envy in guests. The handholds are wood, but the design—which evokes a Craftsman feel—are of black metal. And the master closet … well, it’s got more than ample space for hanging clothes, as well as numerous shelves for shoes, purses, etc. The kitchen … ah! The kitchen. It’s got it all: marble counter tops; a deep, modern stainless-steel sink with matching stainless appliances (including an electric blue dishwasher); and open wood shelves around the sink area, as well as plenty of shelves with doors. Needless to say, the appliances are top of the line. More storage is available in the pantry. Not unexpectedly, the luxury extends into the master bath, which features a large shower with frameless doors, beautiful tile work and two rain shower heads.

CLEVELAND COUNTY LIFESTYLE CURRENTLY IS FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO DRAW ON THE DIVERSE TALENTS OF THREE LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS TO HELP SHOWCASE THE UNIQUE PEOPLE, PLACES AND OTHER THINGS THAT MAKE LIVING AND WORKING HERE SO REWARDING. We asked the three—Teresa Byrd with TinyMites Photography, Ryan Lassiter with Defining Image, and Krystyn Richardson with BOLD Multimedia—for some insights into the art and aims of photography, particularly as they pertain to their primary areas of interest. We start with Teresa, who maintains a studio in Noble but prefers to work on-site on locations across the state. Teresa is a portrait photographer who has a particular love for photographing newborns, but also shoots weddings, and loves photographing “all people.” She offers tips to parents considering having their newborn photographed professionally, then shares some information about herself. Krystyn and Ryan are then featured together in a discussion about the importance of branding and imaging in marketing your business.

FORGET THE PIGGY BANK
ce
ide
Re public B ank &
ARTICLE JOSHUA HINKLE
re s
AS A TEENAGER, I STARTED OUT STUFFING ALL OF THE MONEY I EARNED FROM MY PART-TIME JOBS INTO A VERY PLUMP PIGGY BANK. Occasionally, I would pour out the contents onto my bed so I could count how my earnings had grown. Eventually, I opened my own checking account, and I would drive to the bank to deposit my paychecks. While there, I would check my account balance against my check register. As an adult and now a banker myself, I have several customers who have established checking accounts for their teenage children. Like me, these teenagers are working hard to watch their balances increase. Unlike me, they don’t have to count wrinkled cash from a piggy bank or drive to the bank to deposit their checks. These young people are mindful of their money, but they are using smartphones to deposit checks and mobile apps to move their money and watch it grow. According to the research firm Influence Central, the average age for a child to get their first smartphone is 10. Almost 93 percent of 12- to -17-year-olds will use smartphones by 2020, according to eMarketer. Back in the day, feeding the piggy bank was the way many kids learned how to save money. In today's high-tech world, savings lessons are increasingly learned through mobile banking apps on smartphones. This is a good thing. Our technology is meeting our children where they are. At Republic, we have deposit accounts that can help your teenagers learn the importance of managing money, while they also enjoy all of the perks of technology through our mobile app and digital products like Mobile e-Deposit, Person-toPerson Payments, and our My Finance budgeting tool. Our mobile banking technology is your parenting tool to teach the young people in your life the basics of personal financial responsibility. Goal setting and distinguishing between wants and needs are just a few of the gems that come out of these teaching opportunities. Using technology that resonates with them keeps conversations about successful money management relevant to today’s digital natives.
