Capping the month’s activities is the 15th annual Crowns Tea, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Norman Central. It will include readings from the book, a tea service and a performance from the OU Gospel Choir. There's no charge for the Crowns Tea, but a ticket is required; they will be available at the African-American Read-In; after that, they can be picked up while supplies last at any of the three Norman libraries. The programs are made possible by a grant from the Norman Arts Council and support of the Friends of the Norman Libraries.

A New, Inclusive Community SPRINGING UP ON THE SOUTH BANK OF THE OKLAHOMA RIVER

A NEW COMMUNITY IS SPRINGING UP ON THE SOUTH BANK OF THE OKLAHOMA RIVER. But the developers of Oklahoma City’s latest urban neighborhood aren’t taking a cookie-cutter approach to this project. The layout of Wheeler is designed to encourage residents to walk or bicycle to school, work, church, dining, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel (which opened to the public on July 4, 2016), to the trails along the Oklahoma River, and beyond. A broad range of housing choices are planned, including single-family homes, detached townhomes, urban cottage homes, apartments, and condos, all being built with an eye to energy-efficiency. Eventually, the district will grow to also sport restaurants, retail spaces and even a school that will be open to neighboring residents. 28

Ashley Terry, Wheeler Director of Public Life, says the 150acre area being developed—the first to expand the modern footprint south of the Oklahoma River—is being designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind. Wheeler features will include generous sidewalks, integrated bike paths and narrower, safer streets, interior parks, plazas and walking paths that make strolls inviting and foster interactions with neighbors. Wherever possible, dedicated parking is located in the rear of homes so that porches, not garage doors, frame the street. “Wheeler District is intended to consist of a broad range of home choices, from cottages to townhouses and larger single-family homes,” said Wheeler District developer Blair Humphreys. “The project will also include apartments and livework units that are suitable for those who want a modest business on the ground floor and living quarters above.”

/a brief history Development of the future site of Wheeler began with the purchase by the Humphreys Company of the Downtown Airpark, which operated from the 1940s until 2005 and had gone into bankruptcy, in 2006. They purchased adjoining parcels on both sides of Western Avenue. The design for the Wheeler District was created in July 2014 during a weeklong public charrette—a collaborative process that brought together the urban designers and architects of Dover, Kohl & Partners with the development team and hundreds of community stakeholders. Last year, the Wheeler team was propelled forward with the creation of Wheeler Home, an in-house homebuilding company led by Greg McAlister and partner Josh Kitchen, who have over three decades of combined experience building both suburban and urban infill homes, including creation of the metro’s first 100 percent geothermal neighborhood. “The chance to build smart, efficient, urban homes in a community that is so well-thought out and carefully planned is a dream for us,” says Greg McAlister. “Our priority is to provide authentic quality of life for our residents through their homes and community. The homes in Wheeler are unlike any you will find in the metro area. They have clean, simple lines with custom elevations and floor plans designed for Wheeler by architects known nationally for efficient use of space and connecting neighbors. Energy-saving features, such as geothermal, are unmatched in this area, and interior selections reflect each homeowner’s personal style.”

The historic neighborhoods around Wheeler are predominantly of Hispanic descent, which has created a unique opportunity to provide a public elementary school featuring a dual-immersion curriculum. The approach allows both Spanish-dominant and Englishdominant children to learn to read and write in their native language before being introduced to cross-lingual immersion education. The school is targeted to begin construction in mid-2019 and open in fall of 2020. “Our goal is to make Wheeler Oklahoma City’s next great urban neighborhood—a neighborhood that serves the needs of our community and provides a place for generations of OKC residents to call home,” says Humphreys.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUNDS. We were both raised in Oklahoma City and attended Classen School of Advanced Studies. Kizzie studied drama, music, theatre and voice in high school and college. Adam studied piano in high school and college. We met in choir class and became close friends, but after high school our paths went in different directions. Kizzie performed internationally with Disney in Tokyo and the Bahamas. Adam became a notable Christian rapper and jazz pianist in OKC. Then in 2011, our paths re-crossed, our friendship rekindled and, surprisingly, we also fell in love. We married in 2011 and immediately went off to Bangalore, Indiana, to perform as a cover band for a hotel. During our time there, we decided to establish our band, where we would write and perform our own original music. We returned to OKC in June 2012 and hit the ground running. Adam and Kizzie was born. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU PERFORM? Our music is all original and heavily influenced by many of our cherished musical backgrounds: jazz, hip hop, pop, gospel, rap, rnb, soul, big band… We write our music collaboratively. Kizzie sings. Adam plays the piano, raps and sometimes provides background vocals, if not singing duet. We both perform live with loopers (pedals), which have become signature members of our band. We signed with Ropeadope Records in September 2014. We also began touring nationally at this time. We’ve released three albums, the third released in June 2018. All are available in online stores and via our website: AdamandKizzie.com. We won third place in the MegaStar talent competition with Usher (December 2017), a cash prize and a flight out to LA to meet him and perform one of our hit songs. DESCRIBE YOUR TYPE OF PERFORMANCES YOU OFFER TO LIBRARY AUDIENCES AND BEYOND? Our library performances vary from interactive kids’ concerts to musical sketch shows to educational programs. Our more popular educational program is our “Roots of African American Music,” an entertaining and informative musical journey through the socioeconomic, spiritual, and artistic struggle and triumph of black Americans. We have also performed thematic concerts and sketch shows for children and families. For example, in “Libraries Rock,” we perform songs with the word “rock” in the title, spanning multiple genres and reaching back a few decades. We always get our audiences involved. The kids are going to dance and sing along somehow, some way. HOW ELSE ARE YOU ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY? Kizzie also performs with Lyric Theatre’s interactive program that tours the entire state. Kizzie has performed live theatre productions with Lyric as well. Adam teaches private students and does a lot of mentoring. He hosts the jam session at Ice Event Center. He is a member of a handful of local bands. He is actively working and partnering with others to build programs and events that will cultivate and expand the music community in OKC, including collaborating with OKSessions and Deep Deuce Sessions. We are both members of the praise team at our church. We participate in charitable works through our church. We both teach at the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma.

The couple selected Marissa Adler, owner of Marissa Adler Designs, to complete their home renovation, which included the entire ground floor, after seeing the level of quality, style and attention to detail the full-service design studio demonstrated in projects completed for friends of theirs. Marissa, who partnered with Chris Hundley of Hundley Construction on the project, says that “attention to detail is key in making a space work for a growing family.” Part of the remodel involved reworking the kitchen to make it more functional. However, opening up a wall meant loss of important cabinet space. “We needed to make sure we made up for that with our design,” she says. “Chris Hundley understands that, too. His craftsmanship and attention to detail are why we choose to partner. He never cuts corners and goes the extra mile (or square foot) to make sure every decision is right for the space.” When it came to remodeling the study, paint played a major role, says Marissa. "The woodwork was all black. We used one of our favorite white paints and transformed the heavy feel into a relaxing, bright inviting space.The key to styling bookshelves is to look at the piece as a whole and then break it down into smaller proportions. It’s important to use larger items repeatedly to anchor the shelves and then take your favorite books and accessories grouped in like colors and textures to create the whole picture." TIPS FOR MODERNIZING YOUR SPACE “One of the best things about remodels is taking something that functioned at one time and making it work for modern life,” Marissa says. “If your home wasn’t built in the last decade, there are great ways to make it feel and function like a modern home without losing the beauty of what it has been.” Marissa’s suggestions include: 01 | Declutter! Take everything off the kitchen counters and walls or office book shelves. Put everything in another room to sort. Ask yourself a few questions about the items: Does it function well? Do I like it? Does it bring me joy? 02 | If you still love a piece of art or family picture, but its frame is outdated, switch out the frame. Minimal cost, huge impact and you keep the story the object brings to your home! 03 | Create two piles: a give-away and a keep pile. 04 | If you have old books, they make great decor items to add height and texture. So even if you won’t read it again, you can take the cover off to create uniformity and use them for your shelves in any room. 05 | Paint! It’s an inexpensive way to make things new and can be used in just about anything. In the Tedesco’s office, paint transformed the whole space. By using a light color palette, we changed the dark, heavy cabinetry into fresh, clean cabinetry. 06 | Switching out hardware is another inexpensive way to update older pieces. If you live in an older home with a finish of hardware you would like to switch, don’t be afraid to start small. I personally love mixed metals. It’s fine to have brass door hardware and add nickel to your vanity or built-ins. You just want to make sure you tie it together by repeating the new finish with a light fixture or lamp and accessories.”
