Yuyu’s chef and co-proprietor Aya Hamad notes that she first tasted it at the age of 12 during a visit to Cairo. It was sold on the streets in a plastic bag; to eat it, you had to puncture the bag and squeeze it into your mouth. Today, Kushari is one of the Egyptian and Lebanese dishes found on the menu at Yuyu’s Cozy Corner in downtown Norman, along with an assortment of coffees.

KARAK (SERVES 5) Although this is an Indian drink, it is one of the most popular drinks in Qatar, where I grew up. You usually find it in small coffee shops that are similar to corner stores. INGREDIENTS: + 3 tbsp. loose-leaf cardamom black tea + 2 cups evaporated milk, unsweetened (evaporated milk can be replaced by whole milk or half-and-half) + 4 cups water + 2 tbsp. sugar DIRECTIONS: Put the water and tea in a pan and heat on high on the stove until the water boils, then lower the heat for 10 minutes. Add milk and sugar and stir until it the mixture boils, then turn off the heat. Strain the mixture to remove the loose tea leaves. Serve hot.

Every dollar donated provides four nourishing meals for Oklahomans with inconsistent access to healthy food. After the holidays, we traditionally see a drop in volunteers and donations, although the need continues. Volunteers are needed year-round. Every day, volunteers pack enough food to fill a semi-truck. Volunteer tasks include bagging and boxing food products, assembling Food for Kids sacks of food, preparing fresh food for distribution in Hope’s Kitchen, working in our Urban Harvest program, processing protein donations in the Protein Processing Center and assisting at mobile food distributions. The Regional Food Bank encourages individual volunteers and both small- and large-group volunteers.

AFTER LIVING SOME YEARS IN THE BOSTON/D.C. area, Mike and Teresa Collins, who grew up in Norman and Bartlesville, respectively, together decided they were ready to return to their roots– specifically, to Norman. While still living on the East Coast, the couple contacted Alan Cheshier with Muirfield Homes, and began planning their dream home. At Cheshier’s suggestion, they began with an online search to find a design they liked. They chose a Florida style of architecture and worked with Cheshier to create a similar design, but with several important modifications that included removing one of the two closets in the master bedroom to create a powder room and elongating the remaining master bath as well adding on an exercise room. In real estate, the buzz word is “location, location, location,” and for the Collinses, that also was a key factor. They scheduled a quick visit to the area to scout out available land on which to build the house and were pleasantly surprised to find an available lot in Norman’s Sutton Woods addition with a view of a beautiful pond. “I never imagined being able to find a house in central Norman without a house right behind us and with such a great view,” Mike said. Fans of outdoor living, the couple love the approximately 1,600 feet of patio space located in their back yard. They added screens that allow them to close off about half of the patio, which together with a working fireplace (another of their modifications), creates a cozy place to relax on cool fall days. The Collinses moved into the Muirfielddesigned custom home in August 2016 and are now “living their dream.”

You’ll note that the Wichita Mountains look old—and they are. Capped by 540-million-year old granite, the mountains exposed and rounded by weathering during the Pennsylvanian and Permian periods. While in the area, no matter what time of the year, don’t forget to visit Mount Scott, at 2,464 feet the second-highest mountain within the refuge’s boundaries. (Mount Pinchot in a special-use area is 12 feet taller.) Follow the paved road to the summit of Mount Scott, where you’ll discover a stunning view of the granite promontories to the west, the wind farm to the north, the lakes to the south and east, and Fort Sill and Lawton. My family moved from Ada to Norman when I was 5, and we spent the next several years in a modest Craftsman-style rental located near the University of Oklahoma campus. It was situated on a busy, dangerous intersection. The yard was tiny. The furnishings were modest. There was only one small bathroom, and I shared a bedroom with my younger sister. Despite the lack of great curb appeal, I felt loved and safe in this place. And, oh, the memories!
