LIBRARIES PLANNING SEASONAL ACTIVITIES The calendar is filled with special activities for the holiday season around the Pioneer Library

An avid library lover and hearty holiday fan could attend all if they wanted: the Noble event is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, while Moore’s Holiday Gala takes place at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. Norman East will host an Apple Pie Make and Take at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Participants gather all the ingredients for an apple pie and take it home for baking. The library also presents the program “Cocoa, Crafts and Holiday Movies” from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, with a variety of holiday activities for all ages. A favorite at the Moore Public Library is its “Noon Year’s Eve Dance Party,” set from 11 a.m.noon Monday, Dec. 31. Children and families can ring in the new year a half-day early with a balloon drop at noon and dancing, crafts and entertainment beforehand.

Weave garland and ribbon around the arms of a chandelier, then hang oversized ornaments from each arm, for an eye-catching look.

Ribbon tied around a chair or pillow like a present gives your holiday home style in a flash.

Ribbons and bows can also go a long way to spruce up just about anything, she says. “Place a bow on a chair back or wrap a pillow like a present. These are fun tricks that take little time and money.” Rose also points to a recent paradigm shift in color selection when it comes to decorating the Christmas tree and the home’s interior for the holidays.

“COLOR IS A NEW, BIG FACTOR THAT HAS BEEN COMING INTO PLAY IN HOLIDAY DECORATING IN RECENT YEARS,” SHE SAYS, NOTING THAT TODAY’S COLOR PALETTE MOVES BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL GREEN AND RED AND GOLD AND SILVER. “PEOPLE ARE USING COLORS LIKE TEAL AND PURPLES AND YELLOWS. THEY ARE REACHING OUTSIDE THE BOX AND HAVING FUN,” SHE NOTES.

Holiday decorating does not have to be elaborate. Write a fun holiday phrase on a simple chalk board.

Use leftover garland with a sprinkle of ornaments in a tray for a natural look on a coffee table or breakfast table.

“Tree and garland ornaments, for instance, are now available in a rainbow of colors—purple to black, you name it,” she says, noting that even the artificial trees now come in many colors other than green. For those who consider themselves “designdeficient,” Rose suggests maybe sticking with one or two new colors rather than many. And, she notes, ornaments aren’t just for trees, garlands and wreaths anymore. “You don’t have to have that decorative gene to find different colored ornaments and place them artfully in a bowl,” Rose says. “You can place them around the home or sprinkle a few in a tray. You could even hang oversized ornaments from a chandelier or other area to add sparkle and color.” She says with a little extra effort, one can achieve a great look by threading garland through the chandelier, then adding ribbon and ornaments. “This adds a real over-thetop look in say, a dining room, where you may not have a lot of room for decorations.” “There are lots of things that people can do that are easy and add a touch of the holidays,” Rose concludes. One of her favs is to take a hobby chalk board and write fun holiday phrases or slogans on it. “You can put them on an easel, a counter, or trade out wall décor – and it’s simple to do. The bonus? You can erase your message and change it up as much as you like.” For those who prefer to let the experts help them do their house up right for the holidays, Rose invites them to visit Designer’s Market, 11900 N. FOR MANY, A DREAM WEDDING MEANS SAYING “I DO” ON THE CAMPUS BEAUTIFUL BY DAY AND NIGHT. There’s no denying the charm of the University of Oklahoma, with its romantic archways and inviting brick buildings providing a picturesque backdrop for exchanging vows and taking bridal party photos. That’s why, every year, dozens of couples choose to exchange or celebrate their vows there—and, more specifically, in the heart of OU’s campus in Oklahoma Memorial Union. “Sometimes they choose the Union because it might be a nostalgic location—maybe they met here, or they have a memory from here, or they were especially involved in the Union during their time here,” said Laura Tontz, director of the Union. “And sometimes they don’t have an OU connection at all and they’re just looking for an elegant space.” Considered the hub of campus, the Union serves as a dining spot, a meeting space for student organizations and a place for students to lounge and recharge. But many rooms inside the beautiful 90-year-old building, and some outdoor areas as well, easily transform into a wedding and reception venue without the need for much gussying up.

Couples choose the space that’s right for them, having their pick from Beaird Lounge; the Conoco Leadership Courtyard; the Governors, Regents and Associates Room; and the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom. One selling point for couples is the fact they can have their ceremony in one event space and their reception in another, Tontz said. “We can do any number of configurations,” she said. “It’s really nice if you have grandparents or older guests who can’t or don’t want to travel to a second location—we have lots of options available. Plus, several historic Norman churches that have been here for hundreds of years are just blocks away, like McFarlin Memorial United Methodist, First Baptist and First Christian churches. Couples can have their ceremony there and come here for the reception.” Many consider the Union a one-stop shop for weddings, said Matt Nash, the Union’s assistant director. “When a couple gets married here, we provide suites for each bridal party, and we have in-house catering through University Catering and alcohol service through the University Club,” Nash said. “Parking is attached to the Union so your guests can park close. You can come here and get pretty much everything you need in a venue.” Those amenities, along with a knowledgeable and helpful staff, continuously land the Union in coveted wedding venue “best of” lists. In fact, it’s one of only four venues in Oklahoma listed in The Knot’s Best of Weddings Hall of Fame for winning the site’s Best of Weddings Award in 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018. So, how do they do it? Consistent positive reviews, Nash said. In those reviews, couples rave about the ease of planning their wedding, thanks to the Union’s dedicated event coordinator and building crew, who work with the couple through the entire process. The in-office coordinator meets with the bride and groom and helps them figure out how to have a dream wedding within their budget. Plus, the on-campus location often opens the door to pleasant surprises too, Tontz said. “One couple came across one of the OU mascots, Boomer or Sooner, and got some of their wedding portraits taken with him; they even took some photos with him in the stacks at the library,” Tontz said. “Because you’re on the OU campus, you have the opportunity to encounter things like that that make your special day even more memorable and fun.”

IT TAKES MORE THAN SOONER MAGIC TO FIND THE RIGHT RING Tim Lewis knows a thing or two about Sooner love. As co-owner of Lewis Jewelers in Moore, he helps couples— many of them University of Oklahoma Sooners—on their quest to find the perfect engagement and wedding rings. What’s more? The jewelry expert is an OU grad himself, as is his brother and co-owner Glenn Lewis. Tim met his wife at OU, and his children met their spouses there as well. But, it takes more than Sooner Magic to find the right ring. “My No. 1 advice is set your budget first,” Lewis said. “The girl’s first question is ‘How big is that?’ The guy’s first question is ‘How much is that?’” Then, find what your sweetheart likes. Observe which metal she wears, note comments about friends’ engagement rings, and peek at her Pinterest page—likely a virtual treasure trove of preferred colors, cuts and trends. Next? Research. Lewis said men investigate rings’ technical characteristics online, but they should leave the actual shopping for a brick-and-mortar. Once a fellow does that research, he’s made our job a lot easier. Here, he can hold the diamond in his hand and look at it under a microscope and see if that’s really what he wants.” Lewis also encourages couples to shop together—a trend nowadays but rare when he courted his wife in the ’70s. Plus, the jewelry maker said if the ring comes from the right person, it’s hard not to love. “For my wife, I sat down on my workbench and carved up a little swirl-style ring. I had a little solitaire diamond I wanted to put in it. I hadn’t asked her input, but I had been given her input, just like a lot of guys today.” And? “She instantly thought it was the prettiest ring she’d ever seen.” Funny how that works.
