hat are fashionable people in central Oklahoma wearing to holiday celebrations this year? We threw a little “party” of our own recently to offer our readers some inspiration. It took the form of a photo session, but not just any photo session! The main event was, of course, the photo shoot featuring local women modeling stylish holiday apparel from Cayman’s Clothiers, while our male models showed off clothes fashioned by the Tom James Co., the largest custom clothier in the world. But to give the fashion shoot extra “oomph,” we invited several area businesses to participate. Among those answering our call were the Bob Moore Auto Group, 1902 Limo, Broadway Florist, and Huntington Fine Jewelry. All the participants, benefactors and guests were wined and dined, thanks to Rudy Khouri of La Baguette and Meatball House, and Andrew Black of Meatball House. You’ll hear more about these contributors in our “behind-the-scenes” sidebar accompanying our “Celebrating the Holidays in Style” feature. Also in this issue, you’ll read in our Giving Back department about a Norman ob/ gyn with early-onset Parkinson’s Disease who launched a foundation to raise funds for research into this debilitating disease. We hope some of our readers will make a commitment to support the Norman-based Nicole Jarvis, M.D., Parkinson’s Research Foundation Inc. by purchasing tickets to its Winter Gala, scheduled for Dec. 8 at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center. s a Vietnam veteran and retired Tinker Air Force base toolmaker, Dale Graham could easily have chosen to spend the days enjoying the peace of his rural Washington home, surrounded by his wife, Barbara, their children and nine grandchildren. Instead, he’s up and working from dawn to dark, seven days a week, on behalf of his fellow brothers and sisters in arms, showing all the determination you’d expect from a former Marine who spent 13 months of his life in the notorious DMZ. As an accredited veterans’ benefits claim processor, in 2002 he founded the Dale K. Graham Veterans Corner, one of the most successful veterans’ assistance programs in the country. Working at no charge to vets and their dependents, Graham advises them on what types of benefits they’re eligible for, helps them collect all the proper documentation needed to support their claims, ensures that everything is being presented exactly as required, and then acts as their power of attorney moving forward. Dale Graham Veterans Corner frequently pays the costs for necessary psychological and medical evaluations for those who can’t afford it. Aided by a small army of volunteers, Graham also supervises the other side of the organization, which provides all types of tangible daily living assistance to veterans. This includes everything from food, rent and utilities to transportation to doctors’ appointments, medical equipment and suicide prevention counseling. In all, his group provides approximately $30,000 worth of assistance each month to local veterans. And Graham makes all this happen without charging them a penny.

“I estimate I’m now power of attorney for some 6,000 to 7,000 people, and we’ve helped around 35,000 or so since I started doing this in 2002,” he said. Graham also regularly travels around the country, speaking to groups who are trying to begin similar programs in their own communities. Graham credits his high level of success to his own personal battle, when he began trying to obtain benefits to treat eye injuries he suffered in combat. “I learned the ropes for myself over 20 years of being turned down,” he said. “I learned how to deal with the system and how to present what they want in the way that they want it.” Many of the vets he helps also have been denied for years. “I’m mad at ‘em,” Graham

By 1995, I had figured them out.” Raised in the Dibble/Blanchard area, where he graduated from Dibble High School in 1965, Graham tested for all four branches of the service, choosing the Marines simply because “They let me leave the fastest. I was able to ship out the very next day.” His decision to serve, even knowing he would be in harm’s way, isn’t surprising, given that his father was a decorated veteran who fought in World War II. Graham’s younger brothers would go on to enter the military as well, one in the Marines and another in the Air Force. (Wife Barbara also has 10 brothers, all of whom served in the military.) Reflecting on the return home after his tour of duty, Graham said it was incredibly difficult to be yanked literally from a combat zone back to the United States with no time to psychologically adjust, only to be greeted by the turbulence of the anti-war movement.

Architecture of a Photo Shoot A great amount of teamwork was required to plan and execute our "Celebrating the Holidays in Style" photo shoot at the Montford Inn in Norman. So, we decided to include this sidebar photo essay to offer readers a "sneak peek" into the making of this huge collaborative effort. Of course, one of our first tasks was to identify our models. We sent out a call, and they came! Though none has previous professional modeling experience, they were all stand-outs in front of the camera, and we wish to thank each of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to take part in Cleveland County Lifestyle’s first fashion Cayman's Clothiers owner Shelly Cox helped the models select appropriate holiday attire.

Finding a beautiful and convenient venue for the photo shoot also required some thought. Heartfelt thanks go to Phyllis Murray and William Murray, proprietors of the award-winning Montford Inn in Norman, who agreed to allow their bed-and-breakfast to be overrun with models, photographers, caterers and others during the three-hour-long photo session. Living Large on Lake Eufaula Carlton Landing Designed Around People ARTICLE JERRI CULPEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSEY DAVIES
For 15 years,
longtime Oklahoma City residents Grant and Jen Humphreys divided their vacation time between Lake Eufaula, where Grant’s grandfather, Jack Carlton Humphreys, had built a lake house in the early 1970s, and Seaside, Florida. The family place at Lake Eufaula was a popular gathering spot for the extended Humphreys family, including Grant’s father, Kirk, former Oklahoma City mayor. Seaside drew the couple not only because of its proximity to the ocean and climate, but also because of its unique sense of community and lifestyle: it’s a planned community designed around people rather than automobiles, with features designed to foster a sense of belonging. 26

In the early 2000s, as Grant and Jen’s family grew, they continued to frequent 30A (a well-known road on the Florida Panhandle along the Emerald Coast where Seaside is located), but the long travel distance was always a challenge–especially with five children in tow.
Flash forward to 2007. Grant had joined his father,
Kirk, in The Humphreys Company and was focused on building community in Oklahoma City’s urban core. From Block 42 condominiums to redeveloping the Downtown Airpark (now known as “Wheeler District,” which is handled by Blair Humphreys), the Humphreys had their plate full. During this time, Kirk purchased 1,650 acres of lakefront property at Lake Eufaula.
One day, during a drive through the property with his father, Humphreys wonders out loud: “What if we could create, here at Lake Eufaula, an Oklahoma version of Seaside?” From there, he said, “the vision just grew.” First step: to conduct a market study. Among the findings: Lake Eufaula is within 3.5 hours’ drive time of several large metropolitan areas, including Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Dallas/Fort Worth, and a corridor of communities in northwest Arkansas. The area is easily accessible, thanks to several major highways. And no other comparable resort-type or living communities was located in the region. Humphreys next assembled a design team led by Andres Duany of Duany Plater-Zyberk, or “DPZ”. The world-renowned “New Urbanism” planner had designed Seaside and, later, another community in Florida called Rosemary Beach, which also features human-scaled urban design. Duany led a team of top urban planners, architects, engineers and designers to create a master plan for Carlton Landing unlike anything ever seen in this area. Infrastructure development began in 2010, with the first homes constructed in 2011. Although Humphreys said he initially had no thoughts of moving from Oklahoma City, the couple in 2012 decided to make Carlton Landing their primary home. Much of his work was taking place there, making it easier for him to live on-site, he explains, but also, he and Jen had decided that Carlton Landing was a fantastic place in which to raise their children. In the ensuring four years, Carlton Landing has blossomed. It now features multiple neighborhoods,

This is a popular spot for Carlton Landing residents and visitors to stop and enjoy the beauty. It also is the site of weddings and other special events. Carlton Landing is situated on a protected cove in the southeast portion of Lake Eufaula, where Longtown Creek flows into the lake. The area boasts the best water quality in the lake because it’s spring-fed from the southeast.

an organic farm and farm market, and parks, walking trails and pools. Funded through a TIF (tax increment financing), the community’s infrastructure will be enriched with a conference and retreat center, a destination wedding chapel, a nature center and town center with shops, restaurants and an art gallery. This summer, the community’s school, Carlton Landing Academy, became the first rural public charter school outside Oklahoma and Tulsa counties. Jen, who earned a master of education administration degree from Baylor University, serves as chairman of the academy’s school board and volunteers as the Spanish teacher. Though all the elements of the community are, of course, new, Humphreys says the design incorporates the best of traditional urban neighborhoods, such as a thoughtfully defined and landscaped public realm complete with sidewalks, street trees and neighborhood parks. The walkable framework encourages people to spend more time walking or biking, allowing for more spontaneous encounters with neighbors and a relaxed pace of life. But Humphreys says the best is yet to come for this growing community on the shores of Lake Eufaula. The next plat phase will be developed this winter, adding 128 home sites and another community pool. Also in the works are “The Residence Club at Carlton Landing” (see sidebar) and “The Lake House,” featuring a resort-style pool, kids’ pool and jetted spa, all framed in a deck area overlooking the lake. The Lake House also will feature an upscale restaurant, members’ lounge and fitness room. Occupying the top floor will be two luxury residences. Attention now is being turned toward the waterfront areas. Unlike most private lakeside developments, most of Carlton Landing’s waterfront areas have been reserved for communal activities, such as swimming beaches, picnic areas and trails. The U.S. Corps of Engineers recently re-zoned the land around the community’s portion of the lake to make way for future amenities. Through a lease with the Corps, Carlton Landing is working to create a new 300-slip marina complete with a ship store, restaurants and fuel facilities. At the existing marina, kayaks and paddleboats, as well as skis, wakeboards and inflatable water toys, are made available to visitors as well as those who call this place home. The marina also accommodates a fleet of luxury boats, including speedboats, cabin cruisers and pontoons. For a modest price, residents have the option of joining the Boat Club at Carlton Landing, which allows them use of the boats without the worries and costs of maintenance and upkeep. “When we first envisioned Carlton Landing, we dreamed of a place that would offer all the things we loved about the Oklahoma lake experience, but without the hassles and headaches inherent in owning a second home. In combining world-class design with a high level of service, I think we’ve made that lake experience available to this region for the first time,” says Humphreys. “But getting the design and service right is just setting the table. What makes Carlton Landing truly great are the people who show up for the party. We’re so honored to be able to do life with these friends and neighbors who have helped make our dream a reality.”

What more could you ask for from Oklahoma’s only year-round professional dinner theater? Through Dec. 18, the Yellow Rose Dinner Theater presents “Dean Martin’s Merry Merry Merry Merry Christmas,” a throwback to the old variety shows, including skits, Jerry Lewis and Jimmy Durante acts, and a fun story woven throughout the show. “We really deck out the building and embrace the Christmas show,” says Michael Cooper, director of advertising and entertainment, also known as Dean Martin by theater regulars. Going to the theater is a great way to make holiday memories with your family, he says, adding that theater-goers shouldn't be surprised if they get hooked. Many people, he notes, have made the Yellow Rose’s Christmas program a lasting part of their holiday traditions. In addition to a night of entertainment, the Yellow Rose offers a meal prepared hot and fresh daily by their on-site catering staff. The
inspires children to take joy in the spirit of giving, and it is not uncommon to see them gifting their presents to others. The families are invited to a special show and dinner, and the Yellow Rose pulls out all the stops. Each child is given an overflowing stocking and multiple presents. Many bigger prizes also are raffled off during and after the show. This event, which is completely free for the invited families, is fueled by volunteer participation and donations. “It’s such a special night for everyone involved,” Cooper says, “and it makes a real difference in people’s lives--both the guests and the volunteers.” Providing entertainment with a purpose has always been important to the people at the Yellow Rose. “We do this to bring joy to other people,” says Cooper. The theater boasts a professional troupe that has taken its act all over the country. “Everyone who works there is like family,” Cooper says, adding that "everyone does all that they can to help out. his issue carries a story about this magazine's first major photo shoot, titled "Celebrating the Holidays in Style." It entailed a great deal of planning and execution, and no one was more thrilled than I when everything was at last wrapped up, and it was time to fold up the chairs, put away the cameras and say farewell to all the participants and guests, which included at least one member of the Norman Chamber of Commerce and a city councilwoman. While I know there are areas that could have been improved upon, publisher Jimmy Darden and I were extremely pleased with the participation of several area businesses, including the Montford Inn, and a small but capable team of helpers. Special kudos to event planner Angela Blunck, who coordinated

the selection of the models and was present for their clothes selection process at Cayman's and their hair and makeup appointment at Imagine. What particularly struck me as wondrous was how friendly, accommodating and helpful everyone was before, during and after the main event. When asked to keep the food and beverage table open longer than expected in order to take more photos, Meatball House owner Andrew Black obliged. The models, all of whom donated their time, happily visited among themselves and others, with no outward show of competition. Montford Inn proprietors William and Phyllis Murray generously allowed a crowd of models, stylists, magazine staff, guests and others to take over their front, side

and back yards, and all the common areas inside, for an entire afternoon. Doubtless, it was an imposition, but they never spoke a negative word. In fact, the only sounds I recall hearing all day long were laughter and words of encouragement and praise. Having lived in this area virtually all of my life, perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. Most folk around here are genuine and kind-hearted. We give generously to charitable, educational, civic, arts and other causes. So, in looking back on both the holiday photo shoot and this place I call home, I declare, "It's a wonderful life, especially here in Cleveland County!" Happy holidays, friends and neighbors.
