FREEDOM BOAT CLUB IS KEY TO SUMMER WATER ADVENTURES
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
Boating is made simple, safe, straightforward and enjoyable at Freedom Boat Club, based locally from Lake Center Marina, 5898 Washeon Road in St. Charles.
K.C. Kettleson, Freedom Boat Club general manager, says the company buys and operates a fleet of boats so members can join the club through a one-time entry fee and monthly dues, and then thoroughly enjoy their time on the water without boat-specific preparation fuss. "We handle all repairs and maintenance, and offer a variety of membership plans to fit various boating needs."
He says this company is the largest members-only boat club in the world, having been established during 1989 in Sarasota, Florida.
"We also provide all our members with unlimited training with certified captains, and conduct an annual water safety seminar," adds K.C. "Freedom Boat Club is the ultimate way to boat, and a great way to discover the joys of boating."
He says club members often leverage boat outings to include swimming, snorkeling, fishing, cruising, sightseeing, docking to dine and water sports.
Local Freedom Boat Club vessels will be open in Missouri year-round, only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day and New Years Eve/Day. K.C. says, "We're also closed if water is frozen, and we can’t get boats out. But if the water's flowing, our boats are going out."
They have various fleet choices, depending on the location, including bowriders, pontoons/tritoons, inshore/offshore fishing boats, deck boats and wake boats. "We added 12 new boats this year, including Sea Ray SPO, 27-foot Lowe tritoons with 300 HPS, 26-foot Lowes with 150 HPS, Lowe pontoons with 115 HPS, and a Sea Fox dual console," K.C. states.
Club members can reserve a boat by phone or online via an interactive map.
Freedom Boat Club members can boat at the company's three other Missouri locations: Indian Point Marina, 3443 Indian
Point Road, Branson; Ozark Village Resort, Buddy's Harbor, 1062 Susan Road, Lake Ozark; and Freedom Harbour, 28MM LOTO, 6515 Chalet Drive, Osage Beach. Additionally, unlimited boating for members is available via reciprocal access at more than 370 (possibly 400 by year's end) locations in the United States, Canada and Europe.
K.C. says they plan to open more locations in Missouri, including Smithville, Bull Shoals, Stockton, Mark Twain and other popular lakes.
They have a team of 30 trained employees for the 2023 season, and often host open houses on weekends for potential members to check out the club.
"Boating should be a relaxing and fun escape, focused on making incredible memories with family and friends," proclaims K.C.

Who would have thought one can have a luxury all-inclusive resort experience overlooking a breathtaking desert landscape on a dude ranch in the middle of the Old West? Times have changed in Tucson, Arizona— but not too much.
Recognized as the “last luxurious outpost of the Old West,” Tanque Verde Ranch is an old-time cattle and guest ranch nestled among the Rincon Mountains near Saguaro National Park in Arizona.
As publishers of three City Lifestyle magazines and hosts of IN YOUR CITY Show, Gordon Montgomery and Kelley Lamm recently had their own adventure at
Tanque Verde Ranch. “Our time spent at this remarkable destination exceeded all expectations and left an indelible mark on our memories,” affirms Kelley.
The ranch consists of more than 60,000 acres of desert, deep-rooted in American history, that passed hands through various ranchers and cattlemen since 1868, until Jim Converse built lodging accommodations and began to welcome guests to the property in 1928.
"Tanque Verde Ranch is not only a dude-ranch vacation destination but also a long-living story with an abundance of truthful tales waiting to unfold and for someone to blow the dust off,” says General
Manager Terry Hanley. “The Arizona desert 15 decades ago was filled with ambushing Indians, greedy gangsters and deadly trails. Tanque Verde Ranch lived through it, and did some building along the way."
Now owned by Cote Family Destinations, guests of Tanque Verde Ranch can experience the ranch's rich 150-plus-year American history—an authentic Wild West experience—including more than 200 horses for lessons and rides on miles of horse trails, wound through desert and mountain scenery. “We had the privilege of exploring the breathtaking trails of Tucson alongside the legendary ranch wrangler, Joe Valdez,” Kelley says. “His expertise and passion for the land made every step of the journey an exhilarating experience. From the rugged terrain to the awe-inspiring vistas, we discovered the true essence of the Southwest.”
Kelley says Tanque Verde Ranch is an awesome experience for all of the senses— not only for its spectacular sights but unique and delectable tastes.
She adds that a highlight of her and Gordon’s stay was the unforgettable cookout at Cottonwood Grove: "The rustic setting, combined with the flavors of a well-prepared meal, created a culinary experience that delighted our taste buds and warmed our hearts. The attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients truly showcased the ranch's commitment to excellence. The following morning, we embarked on a sensational ride to a Blueberry Pancake Breakfast, which left us in awe of the breathtaking surroundings,
while savoring the delicious pancakes was a feast for the senses. The dedication of the staff to provide such an unforgettable start to the day was evident in every bite.”
Guests also can enjoy more than 30 fun activities, including mountain biking, fishing, hiking, axe throwing, archery, swimming, nature seminars and Jeep adventures. The ranch also offers more than 25 team-building activities and 17 event spaces.
Tennis and basketball courts sit among the towering saguaro and ocotillo as well as two swimming pools and 69 choices of comfortable and inviting accommodations featuring traditional adobe walls and Santa Fe-style architecture. The lodgings combine the spirit of the Old West with modern amenities.
Kelley says Tanque Verde Ranch uniquely allows for the simultaneous experience of an old-time ranching adventure and a sophisticated poolside gathering. “The fusion of the cowboy and cowgirl lifestyle seamlessly transitions into a relaxing afternoon by the pool,” she explains. “This unique blend of adventure and relaxation allows guests to immerse themselves in the true spirit of the ranch. Whether you prefer saddling up for a ride or lounging poolside, there is something for everyone.”
Tanque Verde Ranch’s professional wedding planning staff can assist couples with all of the details for an Arizona dream wedding with a picture-perfect scenic backdrop of rolling mountains and gorgeous desert landscape and a variety of indoor and outdoor venues to accommodate up to 350 guests.

Numerous spa services at the ranch include massages, body treatments and facials. And off-site activities include skiing, golfing, cave exploring and mountain climbing among others.
Tanque Verde Ranch has received some 15-plus awards including being named the “No. 1 Top Resort in the Southwest” in Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards in 2021.
Kelley and Gordon couldn’t agree more. “We wholeheartedly award Tanque Verde Ranch a well-deserved five stars. It is an idyllic destination suitable for families, solo travelers and couples alike. The diverse array of activities, coupled with the outstanding food and impeccable service, make it a true gem among travel destinations,” Kelley says. “The hospitality we experienced at Tanque Verde Ranch was unparalleled. The staff went

above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Their warmth and genuine care created a welcoming atmosphere that added to the overall charm of the ranch.”
Guests today can experience Tanque Verde Ranch’s horse trails, which wind their way through desert and mountain where once silent Apaches waited in ambush to surprise Carrillo’s cowboys.
Four tennis courts now lie in neat formation among the towering saguaro and ocotillo, and the bright swimming pools sparkle in the Arizona sun, where Converse’s Mexican vaqueros once roped bawling steers. The ranch’s 200-plus horses are rounded up in the old roughhewn mesquite corral fence, where both Don Ermilio Carrillo and Jim Converse would gather their cattle for the drive to the Tucson market. Today’s guests can kick off their dusty boots and gaze into the spectacular Arizona sunsets, just as the first cowboys did after a long day’s ride.
“Our time at Tanque Verde Ranch was nothing short of an experience of a lifetime,” says Kelley. “We are grateful for the opportunity to share this remarkable destination with our readers and viewers, and we highly recommend Tanque Verde Ranch to anyone seeking an unforgettable adventure.”

‘Tis the season! Festivities in the summer call for ice-cold drinks, but that doesn’t mean they have to include alcohol. Mocktails are increasing in popularity as many choose to forego alcohol for various reasons. Here are some of my favorite ways to jazz up a mocktail recipe, knowing the alcohol of choice always can be added, if preferred. Grab mixers, fun ingredients--maybe even some herbs from
the garden--and other accessories to start building a delicious summer spritzer. Interesting cocktails are a fun way to create conversation, share recipes and get parties started.
Sparkling water is KEY when making mocktails. Adding fizzy bubbles is by far my favorite way to make a mocktail taste and feel like the real deal without the sugar and calories of soda. If the drink needs to be sweetened, try half soda and half sparkling water. Plain sparkling water will work with sweeter cocktails, but if you need extra flavor, add flavored sparkling water. Lime sparkling water is absolutely delicious in a spicy margarita.
Especially in the heat of summer, you’ll want cocktails to stay cold without tasting watered down. Freezing fruit in ice cube trays with water is a beautiful way to add flavor and visual interest to mocktails. Guests will want to Instagram these creations. If adding fruit to ice cubes isn't your style, try fun ice cube shapes. Large cubes or even sphere cubes are a fun way to add interest to a drink while keeping it super chilly.
Leafy greens are a great way to add a burst of finishing flavor to your creation, and the color contrast looks nice against a berry or citrus-flavored drink. Herbs, such as basil, mint, rosemary or even lavender, are unique additions that take mocktails to the next level. If you're a gardener, these could be ready for you to clip fresh from your garden--a warm welcome to guests who will feel honored to enjoy some of your green thumb talents.
Don’t forget about the rim of the glasses. My newest favorite is Tajin seasoning (which is dried mild red chili peppers, dehydrated lime juice and sea salt), adding spice to a drink. Other choices could be salt, sugar, cinnamon sugar or even sprinkles. For a birthday party, try a frosting rim with colorful sprinkles.
Need a fun idea? Spicy drinks are my newest obsession, and I know many shy away from them. Give them a try. Go for a bold recipe, such as spicy margaritas, smoky Palomas or Bloody Marys. It doesn’t have to be overboard, but a jalapeño garnish can really punch up an otherwise tame drink. The level of spice can be light, or you can even let guests choose their heat intensity if mixing drinks on the spot.
Don’t forget about the extras. The type of glass and the straw used can set recipes apart. A drink can be made so fun with metal straws, paper umbrellas, edible glitter or even just some extra frozen fruit as toppers. Glass choices could be Mason jars, colored glassware or tall, skinny flutes. Cocktail napkins also are a way to add to themes with extra color or pattern. Whatever the approach to or theme of mocktails, just jump in and have fun!
Rescuing and rehabilitating barn buddy animals for adoption is the noble mission of a group of dedicated animal advocates in Franklin County. And, they do this community work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
As part of the Humane Society of Missouri, Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union is a haven for abused or neglected horses and farm animals, as well as those whose families are no longer able to provide for them due to financial hardships, age challenges or residential relocations. The ranch is known as one of the most comprehensive U.S. horse/farm animal care and rehabilitation centers. Ranch staffers also provide hands-on humane education experiences for both children and adults, including assistance with animal behavioral issues.
"The faster we can adopt the animals, the sooner we can help more of them," says Amanda Mullen, Longmeadow Rescue ranch director.
Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, once known as Packwood Longmeadow Farm, was purchased in 1988. Its establishment via land donation was made possible by a generous bequest from George Packwood Jr., who was an active HSMO volunteer. In 1926, he launched his own business, which in the 1950s was sold to the Calgon Corporation.
The ranch's animals receive visitors from noon to 3 p.m. every Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday, no reservations required.
VISIT, SUPPORT HUMANE SOCIETY’S HAVEN FOR HORSES, GOATS, SHEEP, PIGS, DUCKS, DONKEYS AND OTHER ANIMALS
Additionally, supporters can sponsor a barn buddy to help feed, board and provide medical care. Choose from among Twister, Cruiser, Tater Tot, Homer, Teagan, Tumbleweed, Delores, Laverne, Shirley, The Coop, Teddy, Katie, Leonard or Howard, reflecting mini donkeys, alpacas, llamas, goats, turkeys, ponies and KuneKune pigs, which are indigenous to New Zealand and are often kept by the Māori people there. Amanda reminds these sponsorships make wonderfully unique and memorable gifts for family and friends.
Another way to help is to frequent the L Double R Tack Room & Gift Shop, featuring horse and farm animal gift items for kids and adults, as well as halters, grooming supplies and training tools. All proceeds support the ranch's objectives.
For those 18 years and older, consider volunteering at the ranch to rehabilitate and socialize the animals. Duties include feeding and watering animals; cleaning stalls or corrals; and mowing grass or performing various maintenance work. Volunteer daylight hours are available seven days a week.
A fourth way to assist is to provide a general financial donation or one specifically to The Second Chances Equine and Farm Animal Fund, designed to help provide rescued animals with food, life-saving veterinary care, farrier services and training.
A fifth way to support the ranch animals is to donate items from barns or homes, such as kiddie swimming pools for the waterfowl.
The last way to help is to provide items from the ranch's Wish List page on the HSMO website or to shop directly on the ranch's Amazon wish list.
Every way of support helps tremendously. Recently, the group's Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued intensely neglected and starving horses. "It was obvious these horses were severely malnourished to the point that it became life-threatening," says Amanda.
Wagon Days at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch offer free family fun by spending time with rescued and adoptable ranch animals followed by taking a wagon ride through the 165-acre facility at 480 Joseph’s Road in Union. Children can ride rescued horses for $5 cash. They have food and beverages for sale during these events, but visitors also can pack picnic lunches.
WAGON DAYS DATES FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2023 ARE:
• Sept. 9, 2023 – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Oct. 7, 2023 – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Many people don't realize alternative care for horses and farm animals is as great a need as it is for dogs, cats and pets.
Everyone loves a Greek salad, but this inviting, wholesome version is truly “food worth eating.” This is a traditional mezé (small dishes often served as appetizers) with defining flavors originating from the Island of Crete. When tomatoes are their juiciest in mid-to-late summer, it’s a great time to try this easy dish at home.
Barley rusks are an indispensable part of the Mediterranean diet because they contain less gluten than wheat. The rusk is low in fat and extremely high in fiber, making for easier digestion.
Barley rusks usually can be found in international specialty stores or gourmet markets. If this is not an option, cooks can make their own using whole wheat bread by cutting them into 1 ½ inch slices and baking them in the oven at 120-130 degrees for 3 hours until crispy. It is essential to bake on low heat.
Amalia Loli: Fall in love with this simple and healthy authentic Greek dish. Follow me along my culinary journey @amaliaculinaryart on Instagram or visit my food blog: AmaliaCulinaryArt.com
• 4 barley rusks or baked wheat bread
• 3 ripe tomatoes (grated); 8 cherry tomatoes quartered
• 8 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
• 6 ounces crumbled feta cheese
• 10-15 Kalamáta olives (sliced)
• Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
• Greek oregano
Dip the barley rusks in cold water for 1 second on each side. Grate the tomatoes and season with a pinch of salt and pepper, spread the grated and chopped cherry tomatoes on top of the rusks, drizzle with EVOO, add feta and top with olives. Sprinkle with oregano and drizzle with EVOO. It’s Greek longevity on a plate.
Tip: Ideally juicy, ripe tomatoes are needed. Grating the tomatoes using the large holes of a box grater gives the best consistency and use the juices to help soak and soften the rusks. Let the rusks sit for a couple of minutes before serving. This bright and colorful piled-high bruschetta with loads of Mediterranean goodness is the soul of Greek cuisine. Bon Appétit, or as the Greeks say, "Kali Orexi."
