A noble life deserves a second chance is the motto of Equus Rescue and Therapy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit horse sanctuary in Millstadt, Illinois. However, in the case of this unique initiative, both horses and humans come together to save each other. Margo Sutter, Equus (Latin for horse) founder and executive director, says they rescue and rehabilitate horses who are retired or injured from the race track, living in horrific conditions, and from kill pens on their way to slaughter. "We give them a second chance at life, whether that be a career, a new home or a dignified retirement." She wishes more people got to witness the power of healing from horses, who have a keen sense for syncing with people and their emotions. "Horses are the queens and kings of nonverbal communications, and they know what we need." She adds that Equus Rescue also gives back to the community through programs serving at-risk youth, such as their Equine Angels program. "These are four-day camps for youths, and along with learning how to care for horses, we teach the cowboy code of ethics about respect, responsibility, commitment and leadership, all in positive ways." Within the Equus Readers Program, children read out loud to the horses to practice self-confidence and public speaking. Youths typically are brought to the program by parents, church groups or school educators. Margo says this activity is especially geared toward reading-challenged children who are younger than third grade because the horses are nonjudgmental and provide an adoring audience. She adds that the program was suggested by 10-year-old Aleksandra Ross, daughter of Natasha Chekoudjian and Jason Ross, the husband/wife team behind luxury belts and jewelry brand Artemas Quibble. Natasha is a St. Louis native who became a fashion designer, and the family relocated back to the region during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aleksandra first raised money for Equus by operating a snow cone stand in 2022. She and her younger brother, Oliver "Oli," raised $1,000. She then discovered personally the value of reading to the horses, and now is expanding into selling stuffed animals for the nonprofit. "We're also expanding Warriors H.E.A.L., a program that honors our returning war veterans and active duty forces. The acronym stands for Horses Enlighten Awareness and Learning. Veterans facing PTSD trauma

have much in common with our horses who had to face their own traumas," explains Margo. "Our horses come to us 100 percent in the way they've survived, with color and texture of what happened, and they learn to go forward here, with unconditional love. So can veterans." Margo says horses and veterans understand each other very well. "Equine therapy can achieve in 15 minutes what talk therapy achieves in 15 years. An abused horse cannot live in the past, or it will die. Ugly things happen to them and to people. Humans tend to relive the past, trying to sort it out, and get locked up in emotional chains. With the help of these horses, our veterans can release the ugly things that happened." For veterans interested in "connecting the dots" through the H.E.A.L. program, Margo says the Equus team is hosting a three-day training at the facility during Nov. 17, 18 and 19. Equus does place some of the rescued horses into loving, private homes, but many of the horses are permanent residents of the farm. This rescue/ therapy program relies solely on generous donations and kindness from others. Since 2009, the Equus team has rescued or transitioned from auctions, dispersal sales, kill pens and other dire situations nationwide more than 700 horses in peril due to neglect, starvation or risk of slaughter. I am a registered dental hygienist and have been working in dentistry for more than 29 years. When the dental office closed during March 2020, my heart sank. • 1 cup farro • 2 1/2 cups vegetable broth or water • 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and diced into 1-inch cubes • 8 ounces mushrooms (cremini, shiitake, or your choice), sliced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional) • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

1. In a medium saucepan, combine farro and vegetable broth or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for about 25-30 minutes, or until the farro is tender but still has a slight chewiness. Drain any excess liquid and set aside. 2. Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss the diced butternut squash with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the squash out on a baking sheet and roast for 20-25 minutes or until tender and slightly caramelized. Remove from the oven and set aside.

3. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat in a skillet. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until they are browned. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set aside. 4. Prepare the Medley: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion pieces and cook until they become translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas staff, families and supporters are celebrating the nonprofit's 40th anniversary and four decades of granting wishes to nearly 10,000 wish kids. Since its inception in 1983, the Ballwin-based chapter has enriched the lives of wish kids, all of whom are battling critical illnesses, along with their families across Missouri and Kansas through a variety of wish experiences. “Over the past 40 years, we've been able to grant the heartfelt wishes of more than 9,500 children throughout Missouri and Kansas,” says Caroline Schmidt, president and CEO, Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas. “This is only possible through the incredible support that we've received from our caring communities. A wish has the power to transform lives, bring communities together and create life-changing moments.” Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas was founded four decades ago in Springfield, Missouri. The chapter's first wish was a private celebrity wish where a young child wished to meet his favorite athlete. The chapter’s first publicized wish was

for a boy named JD who was battling cancer and wished for a white poodle puppy to bring him joy during his medical journey. Throughout the years, Make-A-Wish hosts several annual fundraising events in St. Louis, Kansas City, Wichita and Springfield to enable the chapter’s work and mission. This spring, they hosted the 2023 Walk for Wishes presented by Centene and Spectrum at Forest Park in St. Louis. They also held a wish reveal for 17-year-old Dannah, a Maryland Heights youth fighting sickle cell disease. She’s one of three kids in her family who suffer from the disease. Her wish to go to Hawaii was granted, ushered in with a Hawaiianthemed party and a Kona shaved ice truck. During 2022, the local chapter granted more than 400 wishes to children with critical illnesses. Wishes are granted to serve as catalysts for renewed strength and encouragement to children with illnesses defined as malignant, degenerative or progressive. This year, so far at press time, 438 life-changing wishes have been granted for the children the organization serves, with 164 of those youths in the St. Louis metropolitan region. Brian Miller, vice president of marketing and communications, Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas, says wish children are between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 years old. He says the youths typically face various types of cancer, neurological conditions, cardiovascular challenges and respiratory issues, as well as blood and kidney health threats. "The majority of wish kids, or 35 percent, are between the ages of 6 to 9. Twenty-five percent are older than 14. Twenty-three percent are 5 or younger, and 17 percent are between 10 and 13 years old," explains Brian.

“These wishes not only provide respite to families facing the reality that their child has been diagnosed with a critical illness, but they also give a piece of childhood back to those children in a time when it is needed most,” says Caroline. “The majority of wish children go on to live healthy lives and reflect on their wish as a turning point in their recovery. Through our enduring partnership with our volunteers, donors, community supporters and staff, we look forward to another 40 years of granting wishes.” Hannah Pope, marketing and communications manager, Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas, says the Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas chapter currently has more than 300 wish granters that volunteer their time and resources to help wish kids receive their one true wish. The local chapter team members hope that donors will remember and select Make-A-Wish among their nonprofits to support through charitable contributions on 'GivingTuesday,' which is Nov. 28. The Rooted Sisters Provide Empowering Faith Community For Female Leaders Christian Business Women’s Breakfast To Be Held In Chesterfield On Nov. 7

Lisa Nichols and Cindy Owens were two high-powered female leaders who met through a local forum for women in leadership: Lisa as CEO of Technology Partners and Cindy as CEO of The American Red Cross at the time. The two became fast friends and learned they had more in common than leadership; they shared faith in Jesus. The two decided they would join a forum of fellow Christian business women together, as well. Yet, after months of searching, they realized no such network existed in St. Louis. So, they did what two energetic, female leaders do and started their own network. This is how The Rooted Sisters, an International 501(c) (3), formed in St. Louis during 2015, along with their friend, Tina Wesley. The mission of The Rooted Sisters is to provide a safe place to educate, equip and empower

Christian businesswomen to grow in a closer, more intimate relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. Now, in its eighth year, The Rooted Sisters is comprised of a network of 400 female leaders, from St. Louis to Singapore, who meet regularly. They gather for Bible Study, fellowship events, such as local Happy Hours, and produce recognized events locally, including the Christian Business Women’s Breakfast and the “Faith-Fueled” Mastermind Retreat. The first annual Christian Business Women’s Breakfast took place in 2017 with 325 women in attendance. Now, in its sixth year, they expect nearly 1,000 women gathered together on Nov. 7, at The Crossing, a church in Chesterfield. In addition to their annual breakfast, their passionate board of directors is busy planning their annual “Faith-Fueled” Mastermind Retreat for 2024. This will take place April 26-29 at the famous Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri. The retreat in the Missouri Ozark Mountains will overlook sparkling Table Rock Lake. The Rooted Sisters’ Faith-Fueled Retreat is a very unique mastermind experience with a whole-life focus. They invite female leaders to refresh, refocus and release in this special time and space. The retreat is designed to catapult women in leadership to spiritual and professional victory. The holiday season is right around the corner, so it’s time to get the guest room up to five stars. Over the years, there are a few prepping tasks I always do before I host to make an enjoyable stay for out-of-towners.

Five things that make you happy instantly: Did you get any pleasant surprises today? Did you do any acts of kindness today? What's something big or small you can do for those less fortunate than yourself? Five personality traits you're grateful for: Favorite song and how does it make you feel? One small step you can take toward overcoming a challenge you currently face: List something good that caught your attention today. What nice thing did another person do for you this week? What's something you did for another person this week? Three things you own that make your life easier: How can you turn something that makes you angry into something more pleasant? Think of five people who irritate you or you have trouble getting along with. Name three positive qualities about them. What are you most thankful for in your life? Name three of your significant accomplishments. Most stunning place you’ve ever visited: Think about the personalities and unique qualities of someone you admire. Which qualities of them do you want to see in yourself, too? What's your favorite holiday and why? What friends are you most grateful for having in your life? What basic daily necessities are you thankful for today? What are you grateful for in your career? Focus on your five senses and write down how you can make them more active.
