LIFESTYLE LETTER

Inspiring Women Our May issue is dedicated to all women especially those in our lives and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in oneself and at the same time being able to see the beauty, greatness and talent in other women around them. Women inspiring women, empowering and encouraging each other to succeed is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to inspire those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue, we are sharing amazing stories of inspiring women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs, women who are finding ways to give back to our community and businesses that help women. Let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. We also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to thank them for their impact on your life. Happy Mother's Day,

“When the opportunity at Sono Bello became available, I knew it was the perfect fit. They continue to improve and grow, and I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

Flat, tight tummies in just one visit are possible through a local team of body-contouring leaders; such a possibility prompts hope in many. AbEX -- an innovative, breakthrough technique developed by Sono Bello -- combines the center’s signature TriSculpt micro-laser liposuction with excess skin removal in the full abdomen to provide a more comprehensive approach to fat removal than a traditional tummy tuck. “While a tummy tuck is done under general anesthesia, AbEX is done under localized anesthesia, which results in fewer complications, less downtime, and faster patient recovery as we completely avoid the risk associated with general anesthesia,” says Gerald Lionelli, M.D. Located at 845 N. New Ballas Court, Suite 360, in Creve Coeur, the St. Louis Sono Bello 18-member team is part of 70-plus locations nationally. Sono Bello was founded in 2008. The company’s 135-plus, board-certified surgeons have performed more than 250,000 procedures to date. Overall, Sono Bello services include targeted area body contouring, mommy makeovers, tummy-tuck alternatives, excess skin removal, chest/gynecomastia reduction and double chin reduction. Stephanie Naar, Sono Bello senior patient care consultant, says she’s always been interested in the aesthetics field. “When the opportunity at Sono Bello became available, I knew it was the perfect fit. They continue to improve and grow, and I’m so proud to be a part of it,” she adds. As a patient care consultant, Stephanie says she appreciates having the ability to change lives by supporting patients and their transformation body goals. “On a personal level, I love the challenge my job brings every day,” she says. “I consider many of my patients my friends, so when I see them after their procedures, it excites me to see their amazing results. It really is like cheering on your best friend.” Lifestyle publisher Kelley Lamm Montgomery plans to have skin removed from five, prior emergency surgeries that she says left her hating her stomach. “It’s something after all these years to transform my belly. I’d like to feel better in my skin and in my clothes,” she says. “I’m doing this for myself, something that makes me feel like me again. Age and surgeries can play a wicked game on the body. No matter what I do, what I eat, I cannot change the appearance.” Kelley encourages women to not feel guilty about wanting to have the opportunity for better body-related results. CONTINUED >

Dear Younger Selves

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

LOCAL LADIES REFLECT ON ADVICE THEY WOULD GIVE THEMSELVES EARLIER IN LIFE

What Leslie would tell her younger self: 1. Don’t pick a college major based upon what you think your career will be; pick something that you enjoy or that piques your interest at that moment. I majored in English Arts, thinking I would go to law school to become a sports agent. Being an English major gave me a strong communications foundation, but I hated doing the work. I never went to law school, I actually went to business school, and I’m certainly not a sports agent now. As a young person, you don’t have to have life all figured out! 2. Don’t sweat the small stuff! Enjoy the little things in life. 3. Pay attention in Junior Achievement and Personal Finance classes. Having a spending plan is a girl’s best friend! Leslie’s top two accomplishments to tackle this year include completing a 50-mile bike ride, and resuming international travel. “There are so many places in the world that I want to visit,” she adds. Rung For Women is a membership-based group dedicated to the mission of all women receiving holistic support, encouragement and opportunities that position them to pursue their dreams and to thrive – as family members, role models, equal wage earners, entrepreneurs and community leaders.

What Faith would tell her younger self: 1. (...I don’t even remember my younger self! In that, we’re always evolving, and it’s impossible to know how to guide your younger self.) But I would share that each unique experience in business shapes the next chapter. Specifically, I would say always have a concrete business plan, be creative within that plan. Allow yourself the time to reflect and build on that experience. 2. Don’t be afraid to go for it! Don’t be shy! Experiment with your ideas. 3. Capitalize on your talents and use the skills you acquire. My younger self didn’t have access to the internet, social media and all of the new tools to grow business. With technology and using these principles, the sky is the limit on growing your business. Yet this year, Faith says she would like to bring on specific new companies that haven’t yet done business with Taylor Scientific and to strengthen current accounts. She’d also like to grow Faith Berger Art Consultants, so the website FaithBerger.com is generating business and selling art prints on a daily basis. She adds that she’d also like to partner with companies to use her designs for home goods. Taylor Scientific offers more than 30,000 products, and maintains an extensive inventory of chemicals, equipment and supplies in a 30,000-square-foot warehouse at 950 Hanley Industrial Ct.

What Karen would tell her younger self: 1. I wish I had exercised CHOICE much earlier in life and had not been in a reactive mode. (Example, I didn’t like my seventh grade teacher so I didn’t do school work. How stupid -- only hurting me, not him!) 2. As part of CHOICE, I wish I had worked much harder in school and not spent so much time socializing, talking, rebelling and other unconstructive things. 3. Also as part of CHOICE, I wish I had chosen a loving, supportive partner/husband, instead of being a bad “picker” twice. While losing weight is on Karen’s 2022 list, she says she’d also like to design and pilot an Education School college course to teach teachers-to-be about parents and families, and the importance of the relationship between school and home, parents and teachers to the success of struggling students. She believes there are few-to-no such courses, and teachers graduate with little-to-no knowledge of all types of parents and are afraid of them rather than welcoming them to the classroom, making them feel comfortable and working with them to be engaged in their children’s education. HOME WORKS! connects teachers to parents with virtual home visits and Parent Teacher Learning Team meetings that involve and empower the entire family. Karen also founded other organizations and programs: Cultural Leadership, Books and Badges and Operation Understanding DC.

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

Born with No Arms, She ‘Hugs’ the World with Her Inspiring Life From an inspirational YouTube-er to founder and CEO of an important, much-needed company, Letisha Wexstten, of St. Louis, is truly amazing. Letisha was born without arms and at an early age had to learn how to do everything with her feet, including driving and painting. “When I was a baby, my parents were very supportive of me being independent, and that really kickstarted my personality of being OK with not having arms, accepting myself for who I am and accepting others for who they are,” she says. “There were no support groups for amputee babies, and so it was kind of trial and error.” “My mom – a genius – would sit me in the kitchen, and I would dump the beans out of the jar and then pick them up individually with my toes,” Letisha says. “That really helped with dexterity in my toes.” “I just figured it out,” she recalls. “And that’s how my life has been ever since. I drive a car, I paint and I’m an artist. I use a normal computer setup – I don’t have any extra adaptations or voice-activated stuff. It’s almost faster for me to use my feet because my feet are my hands.” And that’s how she got through college, earning a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from UMSL. She has now taken her inspiring, self-motivated attitude to the business world with the company she founded, V15Able. She began her journey to inspire and assist the disabled community in 2012 when she debuted her YouTube channel, “Tisha UnArmed”, where she creates and posts informational and humorous videos of her daily life with a disability. But taking her story online wasn’t something she did lightly. “A lot of my friends are amputees, as well as my husband, and we’re all real open about our lives and have a really weird sense of humor,” Letisha says. “And because we do all these weird and interesting things, they were like, ‘Tish, you have to videotape some of it.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want people to make fun of me. I don’t know if I can handle someone making a mean comment about me or saying that’s gross or something.’” She decided to make one video – showing her making a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich with her feet. She was a hit. The channel now has more than 170,000 followers. Its success made Letisha think about what else she could do to help the disabled community.

Because approximately 60% of all disabled people in the United States of working age are unemployed, and still there are seven million job openings that go unfilled every year, Letisha founded V15Able (pronounced Visible), a new employment platform designed to bring candidates and employers together. Currently the V15Able website offers disabled candidates the ability to create their own free, customizable profile that best describes and showcases their capabilities in the workplace. Candidates may then share their profile with prospective employers with a personal link. “When I saw how much of a difference the YouTube channel was making I knew that I wanted to help other people like me gain the confidence they needed in order to take back their independence,” Letisha explains. “I am really excited to see what the future holds for V15Able. We think that this platform is going to change the world.” V15Able (15 represents the 15% of the global population with disabilities) was developed at the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2019 through the University’s first Entrepreneurial Quest Accelerator (EQ ) program, a six-week course in entrepreneurship that culminated in a competition for a $15,000 grant. Later in 2019, V15Able won a $50,000 St. Louis Arch Grant to put toward building the online platform. In 2020, V15able partnered with St. Louis startup studio Sigla to build the first iteration of its platform, which made its debut in March 2021. Investors, business leaders, and disability advocates interested in helping bring V15Able to the next stage can contact Letisha at tisha@v15able.com. “My plan is to change the way businesses hire people with disabilities, allowing disabled candidates to advocate for themselves proving that anything is possible,” Letisha says. When asked how she acquired such a can-do attitude and positive spirit, she says, “I just figure it is what it is, My mom trusts in God, and she says He made me this way for a reason and don’t ever question that, just go with it – and I’m like, ‘All right, it works,’ “I’d rather work hard and accomplish something than sit around and feel sorry for myself. People may see me and say, ‘Well shoot, you don’t have arms, and here you are working to become a graphic designer, you paint, you drive, and here I am complaining about a hangnail.’” CONTINUED >

DELICIOUS DE SSERT

A RECIPE TO HONOR ALL THOSE SPECIAL WOMEN ARTICLE BY CHEF ERIC CARTER

A S E A S Y ( A N D SCU M P T IOUS) A S A PPL E TA RT INGREDIENTS • 12-inch pie crust • ½ cup sugar • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 4 cups chopped or sliced, peeled apples • 2 tablespoons sugar • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • ½ teaspoon nutmeg • 1 tablespoon butter DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix sugar and flour in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the apples. The sugar and flour mixture will not completely stick to the apples, and that is OK. Spread the apple mixture uniformly from the center of the dough to within 2 inches of the edge. Fold edge of dough over apple mixture; crimp edge of dough slightly. Mix 2 tablespoons sugar, the nutmeg, and cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples and the dough. Cut 1 tablespoon of butter into 5 or 6 pieces and spread on top of the apples. Bake 27-32 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Cut into wedges and serve warm, drizzled with caramel sauce, honey or jam, if desired, or with vanilla ice cream.

STILL STRUTTING

THEIR STUFF

These ‘Seasoned’ St. Louis Tap Dancers Deliver Up To 85 Shows Each Year ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE ST. LOUIS STRUTTERS

B ACK STAGE | EN TERTA INME NT

Julie Brown Patton

“Life is a dance and the world is its stage. Live, Love and Dance."

One vivacious group of St. Louis women, from ages 60 through their 80s, keep themselves on their toes by enriching the lives of audiences through performing high-kicking, fast-tapping precision tap dance routines to all genres of music with style and glamour. And that's just within the first number that they deliver in their events. The St. Louis Strutters troupe was founded in 1985 by former Vaudevillians and professional dancers Pat Bruder, Anita Davis and Delores Rehling, all St. Louis residents. Strutters' Co-Presidents Cathy Loyd and Donna Grasso share that when the group started, it consisted of five retired dancers, with solo and chorus line experience, who got together weekly for a tap workout. Now, a dozen Strutters exist, most of whom have performed professionally or have taught dance at some point in their lives. The group typically performs more than 85 choreographed tap dance shows annually at conventions, health fairs,

holiday events, corporate meetings, skilled nursing facilities and retirement centers or parties celebrating all occasions. Among their credits are appearances in Broadway-inspired productions at the Muny Opera in Forest Park and for the annual Ms. Senior America Pageant at Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and Resorts International in Atlantic City. They also were invited to audition in Chicago for “America’s Got Talent” judges, Sharon Osborne, Pierce Morgan and Howie Mandel, making it through two rounds of competition in St. Louis and Chicago. Additionally, as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, The Strutters' performers contributed $180,000-plus to charities around the country, including local food pantries, the Crohns and Colitis Foundation Mid-America Chapter, National Children's Cancer Society, Our Little Haven, Ronald McDonald House, Camp Happy Days and the Alzheimer’s Association. They’ve also used proceeds from their performances to

help victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. To book a Strutters' show, audition or request additional information from this group, email struttermar@aol.com. At presstime, the group's 2022 remaining appearances were: May 15, 3 p.m.: Garden Villas O'Fallon, 7092 S. Amy Shaw was an inaugural Eisenhower Zhi-Xing Fellow in 2015, spending a month in China studying Chinese media and how communities address complex issues.

Vital Role Of Public Media NINE PBS LEADER AMY SHAW PROCLAIMS STATION IS LOCAL TREASURE AS ONE OF STRONGEST PUBLIC MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS IN USA

When Amy Shaw became president/CEO of Nine PBS in February 2020, she also became the first woman to lead the organization in its 68-year history. This St. Louis native believes being a woman was an asset to leading and focusing the station through the COVID-19 pandemic. "The collision of our work and home lives, fear and chaos of the unknowns, and need to be kinder and more understanding requires a different leadership style than has been valued in the past," she explains. Amy's deeply committed to the power and strength of public media. "As a public media institution that serves our St. Louis region, we’re more essential than ever in connecting our community through stories that move us. We can go deeper on issues that impact all of us. In particular, our role in education has never

been more important," she assures. "In the pandemic, we’ve gone back to our roots of teaching on TV. So many children don’t have reliable broadband connections and our classes on TV are free, readily available, and taught by trusted local teachers. This is why being a local public media institution matters. We listen to what’s important from people that impact issues and the people impacted, and act accordingly." Recognized as a national leader and innovator in community engagement and public media, Amy leads a talented team in groundbreaking work that leverages on-air, online and community engagement for measurable impact around important, complex issues. While local programming remains the focus, Amy admits the path forward is unclear in many ways, due to technology changes and the shift to access more content on more platforms than before. "What's clear, though, is our lens is squarely focused on telling local stories and doing work that impacts our region," she says. Amy also has led numerous national content initiatives that have created durable change in local communities, including Facing the Mortgage Crisis, public media’s response to the national financial crisis and the national/local American Graduate initiative to rally communities to improve outcomes for youth.

She oversaw the creation of a Community Engagement Guidebook designed to help public media organizations deepen their commitment as relevant and essential community institutions. She currently serves on the PBS board, the Public Television Major Market Group board, is chair of the FOCUS St. Louis board, chair of the Webster University School of Communications Advisory Board, and serves on the Grand Center, Inc. board. She's a member of the St. Louis Forum, the International Women’s Forum, and is a graduate of the 2012-13 class of Leadership St. Louis. In 2021, she was named by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of 25 Most Inf luential Business Women in the St. Louis region. Under her leadership, Nine PBS was recognized in 2020 by the Women’s Foundation of Greater St. Louis as one of the region’s best places to work for women. Nine PBS is located in the Grand Center Arts District at 3655 Olive St. Half of Nine PBS’s funding comes from local viewers, supplemented with community grant funding. "We're also entrepreneurial and do work-for-hire that accounts for about 11% of our funding. In most years, just 11% of our support comes from government sources. We’re driven by a sole purpose to bring about a stronger St. Louis region. Local matters," Amy asserts.
