For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle Chesterfield from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! It is 2023 and we are rooting for you! Be inspired to improve your health, plan a vacation, join a fitness community, enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try, and take on that new project. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and healthy 2023. Here’s to you! We are rooting for you.

OH, GROW UP! Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors And Will Be One Of Greatest Allies To Aid Health

Humans always have had a penchant for propagation. Since King Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century B.C., artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls." Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall." Designers dubbed them “statement walls." But for purposes here, let's refer to them as the architects do -- as “vertical gardens.” A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade. The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well. Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality

by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress. Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well. As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast-growing, and are low maintenance. Add a little color to a wall with a lipstick plant, another climber named for its bright lipstick-shaped blooms. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden. CONTINUED >

More and more people today are finding answers as to why their mental health is in a steady decline. There’s been much medical research done on the long-term effects of trauma. Many people are learning that their mental and emotional downward spiral is connected to their experienced trauma dating back to as early as their childhood. Experts claim that the increased number of adverse childhood experiences is associated with poor health, addiction, and incarceration, just to name a few contributing factors. Right now, you may be thinking about a traumatic situation that you’ve experienced and how it has played a role in your own emotional and mental development. Lifestyle spoke with Danya Artimisi, a licensed social worker who owns Soul One Wellness Counseling. “Do you have phobias? Do you consistently experience anxiety in a given situation? Do you find yourself feeling leery about new people with whom you cross paths? Perhaps you cannot hold onto friendships, relationships, or even jobs. What about irrational fears? These are just a few examples of how perceived trauma can manifest and become life-limiting and seemingly paralyzing,” she explains. “I am here to encourage you that your trauma does not ‘define’ you. It may feel consuming, especially right after the traumatic experience, but it does not encompass your essence. So many people live their lives blaming trauma for their hardships when they don’t realize that they, in fact, have the choice and the control to take back the reins on their lives.” Danya counsels that people have the power to stop negative self-talk and self-limiting fears. “The fact is, what happened in the past, well, it happened. That is something that we cannot control, but what we can control is how we choose to let our past become our identity. All it takes is for you to make the decision to accept that your trauma does not define you.” She says the best way to begin one's journey of healing is to know and accept what is within one's control and what is not. Here is her advice:

“Once you can acknowledge and accept what is within your control and what is not, you can begin to take full charge of your life. You are no longer allowing yourself to be held prisoner by self-limiting thoughts and fears. Don’t make it a blame game. Don’t give precious energy to that which does not serve you and know that it is perfectly ok to evict negative energies from your life. It’s too heavy of a rucksack to carry uphill through quicksand,” she adds. Gio Modern Italian: “Old And New Combined Is Who We Are” ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY PIERCE

It’s a query they’ve gotten many times about their Chesterfield-based Sicilian restaurant and pizzeria over the last decade. People want to know why the owners of Vito’s in the Valley, Giovanni and Jessica LaFata, didn’t just name the place Gio’s. Well, now they are doing just that.

ENTER GIO MODERN ITALIAN. “Guests have always asked us why we didn't name the restaurant Gio's,” Gio says. “I guess because I'm the face they see every time they dine with us, and they know I have a little boy named Gio. My team has always

said the same thing. Making friendships with guests and my team is my favorite part of this business.” So, as they approach a decade of creating modern Italian recipes for the masses, they are changing their name to match. “As we approached our 10-year anniversary, we were finally prepared to create a space that feels like ours—a representation of our modern Italian food, the cocktails we craft, the wines we sip and the warm energy cultivated by a triad combination that is our community, our team and our family,” Jessica says. “As we transformed the inside to feel like us, we decided CONTINUED >

“We are updating our look to match who we already are—a modern Italian restaurant. We are simply becoming who we’ve always been,” - Gio Modern Italian co-owner, Jessica LaFata.

it was time to transform from the inside out and be who we always have been. We are updating our look to match who we already are—a modern Italian restaurant. We are simply becoming who we've always been.” Giovanni says they opened the Sicilian restaurant and pizzeria—where customers are treated to authentic, made-fromscratch Sicilian food—"with the simple idea of bringing a locally owned restaurant to an area that didn't have many. St. Louis is such a strong supporter of small businesses, and we felt Chesterfield needed more of it. The direction of our food, drink and wine menus, as well as our offerings like brunch, lunch, happy hour, dinner experiences and seasonal events organically came to life. We took what customers wanted, what our team was great at, and what our family loved and just went for it. We use the acronym G-growing I-into O-ourselves as the root of our name change. We started with a simple idea but have grown into who we are today.” Gio says he started helping his dad make pizzas as soon as he “was tall enough to reach the ingredients.” That eventually led to him and his brothers opening Vito’s Sicilian Pizzeria in Midtown in 1996. Then in October 2013, Gio and Jessica opened Vito’s in the Chesterfield Valley. “They say ‘stick to what you know,’ so we opened with the idea of authentic Sicily that I always knew,” Giovanni says. “Growing up spending summers in Sicily and operating a restaurant with my family for 20 years, it made sense. However, our customers, team, and family naturally idled in a more modern direction almost instantly. We enjoy exploring new ideas and allowing our chef and team to be creative. Old and new combined is who we are.”

28

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Now once again, the LaFatas are looking to the future. And when they do, the first place they look is at their children. “We have two little boys, Gio, 9, and Luca, 6,” says Jessica. “They are an extension of the restaurant. Our staff and customers love seeing them involved in all that we do, and we love integrating our business into their lives in every way we can. This is our family business. With this one becoming ‘Gio,’ we want our community to get excited about our plans for a ‘Luca’ in the future. We didn't want to keep ‘in the Valley,’ because we plan to expand.” Giovanni says a perfect example of the restaurant’s move to modern is the success of all of Gio’s more modern concepts and menu items including the following: • Happy Hour: “People love our Happy Hour,” Giovanni says. With $5 food and drink specials on the entire menu, Gio says they wanted to create an affordable way for guests to try “a little bit of everything, and it has been one our greatest successes.” • Brunch: “Brunch is a big weekend favorite that is such an exciting change from our other Italian-focused menus,” Jessica says. “I created the menu with the idea that weekends are meant to celebrate, so make the menu fun. Make it modern and trendy and worth celebrating. And our ‘Bottomless Bubbly’—a choice of champagne, mimosas, sparkling rose or a variety—is a fan favorite.” • Menu Items: Gio’s whiskey shrimp, Sicilian hot wings and charcuterie trays and seasonal entrées are guest favorites as are the restaurant’s seasonal handcrafted cocktails like Apple Cider Sangria, Strawberry Basil Mojito and Snowflake Martini. “We work hard to find balance in keeping classics and creating something new,” Jessica says.

HouseFit team members offer beneficial advice and physical support about issues such as maintaining overall balance, curbing arthritis pain and dealing with vertigo. Additionally, they provide specialty Parkinson's treatments and workshops about preparing for falls. She says many people think of physical therapy for after surgery, knee replacements or illness, and they don't realize that her team can focus proactively on prevention and wellness, in essence slowing down the effects of typical aging. "My job is my happy place. Every single day, clients pull me aside and share what positive impacts our services have had on their lives, their loved ones, on their ability to travel and get back to doing the things they love to do. It just makes my heart so happy," assures Dr. Templin.

As a geriatric physical therapist, Dr. Templin says she and her therapists focus entirely on helping older adults move and feel better. "Most people's No. 1 complaint of aging is walking and difficulty with stairs. After working in geriatrics for 13 years, Dr. Templin opened her practice in 2017 as a mobile physical therapy clinic. She recalls quickly realizing there was a need for better ways to serve the local aging community. Tosha Dove-Freund, owner and nurse practitioner, RN, MSN, NP, founded the medspa in 2014. With internationally known injection specialists and board-certified plastic surgeons, Tosha developed techniques and skills for a variety of skincare, laser and injectable treatments. She says they currently rank in the top 3% of medical spas in the nation with Allergan, the creators of Botox Cosmetic; she’s even a certified national trainer for Allergan. In addition to injectable services, she recommends facial or laser services and other skin treatments regarding rejuvenation or hair removal.

Finding a self-reflection technique that works for long-term mental health is key to this practice. Get creative and let go of judgments, remembering that these recorded thoughts are ‘for your eyes only.’ Develop a writing routine, such as jotting down daily goals or observations right after awaking. Most people use journaling to relieve stress, brainstorm problem-solving, or to document gratitudes. For writing prompts, there are various online resources. Buy a special diary or make a journal.

Board-certified surgeons who are body contouring experts at Sono Bello St. Louis, use innovative techniques for life-changing results. They even have a TriSculpt micro-laser lipo treatment, which enables a one-visit, permanent fat removal appointment that works for removing fat on arms, chins, backs, legs and stomachs. Their services are far-ranging, including the reduction of cellulite on male chests, mommy makeovers and tummy tuck alternatives. Body cosmetic procedures at Sono Bello combine science and art.

Monica Adams Quentin Find the way to happiness, no matter what it takes, is the sage advice of Monica Adams Quentin, Today In St. Louis anchor/reporter for KSDK Channel 5 and certified personal trainer. She adds, “Find a way to smile and laugh today. Let your laughter burst out. It’s the ‘music of the soul!’” Monica is indeed following her own recommendation, by side-stepping from her morning shift post at KSDK-TV as of Jan. 6, to work as a full-time, personal transformation consultant, including fitness, fashion and media-based facets. “It’s about balancing life within the power triangle of mental, spiritual and physical components. Everyone should know their value. Set your intentions each morning. Work toward your goals. And count gratitudes each night,” says this energetic enterpriser who decided the time was right to follow her heart by collaborating with others who also ‘walk her walk’ and ‘talk her talk.’ Cue up the ever-popular line from the 1956-1968 TV game show To Tell the Truth: Will the real Monica Adams stand up? Right on cue, the real Monica is always accessible. She says people frequently comment about how down-to-earth and authentic she is when they meet her or work with her. “It was ingrained in me during my childhood to be real and honest,” confirms this St. Louis native whose new URL reflects this same sentiment. “After so many years of getting up at 1:30 or 2 a.m., I’m looking forward to being part of things I was missing out on, starting with spending time with my husband and our three dogs,” Monica says. FA S H I O N STYLIST Her years of privately styling men, often while working with Bachrach Menswear or Bespoke Apparel in Clayton, now will be extended to women, too. She says she’s happy to help people identify what’s missing in their wardrobes or determine the proper colors to wear. Her premise for concierge styling and custom clothing partially stems from watching her mother meticulously work as a seamstress.

PERSONALIZED, BOUTIQUE FITNESS From being in the fitness industry for 20-plus years, Monica learned the art of honing goals. She attended the University of Missouri-Columbia to study exercise science and athletic training. However, at 19 years old, she says she was told she had a massive blood clot and had to be monitored for two years. “In that time, I turned even more to health and fitness. I’d always been an athlete, having played soccer, softball and basketball, and been in track and field.” She became an official personal trainer in 1999. Now, she says she’s planning customized retreats, while collaborating with owners of Le Champ de Fleurs, formerly known as Stone Soup Cottage, in Cottleville. This 33-acre farm is a respite for culinary health and wellness. “I’ve been leading a transformational journey group for the past two years, which has been private until now. I’ll work with a larger group in the future, including providing recipes and other inspiring factors. I’m also working with fitness facilities to provide semi-private or private fitness classes,” Monica reveals. She says she likes fitness classes with 15 participants or less, so she can have her eyes on everyone she’s affecting, and so no one feels lost or falls aside. “I love to see those aha moments in people’s faces when I adjust something they’re doing and they realize what it’s supposed to really feel like in their bodies,” she admits, adding that she’s already directing transformations at Force Performance in Brentwood and Mark Anthony’s in Kirkwood.

42

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

LI F E COAC H FOR PERSONAL JOURNEYS Monica says she likes to imagine how her last second on Earth would be spent. “That type of vision makes you think deeper about how you live life, and how others perceive you. Each day God gives us is holy and a precious gift from Him. We should enjoy it fully. Joy is powerful.” She says she especially likes teaching people how to journal for personal reflections.

M O T I VAT I O N A L SPEAKING Monica wants to talk with others about getting down to business, meeting goals and changing their lives, harkening to her fondness of her radio days. “You’ve got to speak your truth and do all the work to really achieve balance in life, which is so unbelievably short.” Post-pandemic, mental health has taken center stage, reflects Monica. “I’m glad mental health issues are out in the open. It’s given us a new lease on life to speak, feel and trust. We should definitely discuss life and inspire each other. Thinking about what we can even accomplish through podcasts and YouTube lights me up.”

Welcome to Michaela’s Kitchen THIS BOOZY GRASSHOPPER COCKTAIL IS A VINTAGE AFTERDINNER ICE CREAM DRINK THAT IS ALWAYS IN STYLE

Delight guests with this vintage, boozy Grasshopper ice cream adults-only cocktail. It is a dessert in a glass, with Crème de Menthe and Crème de Cacao blended with vanilla ice cream and served with whipped cream. This Grasshopper cocktail is a classic after-dinner adult beverage. Originally invented in New Orleans, where so many great cocktails were invented, it possesses Southern charm. The Crème de Menthe and Crème de Cacao give this cocktail a chocolate peppermint patty richness, making it easy while sipping this sweet sensation, to forget alcohol is involved. For cooking, entertaining and all things from the heart, visit Michaela Kenkel at AnAffairFromTheHeart.com.

Michaela Kenkel of AnAffairFromTheHeart.com: Michaela believes memories are made in the heart of the home: the kitchen. “Whoever is here, or whoever may stop by, there’s always plenty; but nothing makes me happier than when EVERYONE is home, and I can look around my table and there is a ‘seat in every seat.’ Then my heart is full.”

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 52

Experienced Financial Advice Is Worthy Goal Gemini Wealth Group Helps Navigate Investing Stages ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS One or more of the New Year’s resolutions people usually make revolves around financial planning and reaching specific goals that involve financial resources, such as trips, new homes or cars. Lifestyle spoke with Kristin Ward, senior partner/LPL financial advisor of Gemini Wealth Group, about the major factors to consider when planning financial goals. “People are always asking ‘with this downturn in the economy, should I cash out of the market?’ The key is to stay invested,” she advises.

HERE ARE THE MAJOR TIPS SHE SHARED: 1. Don’t panic; stay the course and stay invested. 2. In developing long-term plans, each goal has its own time horizon, so invest accordingly, with the advice of a professional financial planner. 3. Speak often with an adviser; they are like a quarterback calling the plays as needed to reach the goals YOU have set. 4. As one ages, each person has different risk considerations, so always understand why you own what you own and whether that currently meets your needs. 5. Cashing out – historically means missing out. Investors who sell out of positions often miss out when the market rebounds. Missing out on 10 of the best up-days in the market can potentially reduce overall returns by 50%. “As a female-financial adviser, I have a special passion and expertise in working with women to help them navigate their financial needs and goals for themselves and their families. As a widow, I can personally empathize with women going through those difficult times and can, in most cases, ease their financial concerns," says Kristin. Gemini Wealth Group stays abreast of trends and new financial products; they also offer numerous free resources and educational materials on their website at TheGeminiWealthgroup.com. Their team, with 50 years of combined financial services industry experience, helps businesses, families and individuals navigate the various needs and stages of investing. “No one strategy fits everyone, which is why every client gets our constant attention—from planning to execution to follow-up. We take a proactive approach to help develop a strategy to address the financial goals you have set and really engage our clients in the process. We want to know what is most important about money to you and then, together, we find the best way to help you reach those goals,” she says. “We have the client—and only the client—in mind when we partner with them in their financial planning.”
