LIFESTYLE LETTER
Gratitude As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, it's a time when we naturally turn our thoughts toward the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving embodies the essence of gratitude, urging us to consciously express it. It calls us to cherish moments with our loved ones and to embrace the act of giving back in a profound and meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and striving to achieve our goals are undoubtedly healthy pursuits, it's equally vital not to lose sight of the importance of being present, savoring the journey, and appreciating the support of those who have accompanied us on our path. In our relentless pursuit of external measures of success—possessions, titles, or accolades— we risk overlooking what truly matters. Genuine contentment, after all, arises from within and from living in alignment with our true selves. This November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratitude, and community outreach. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the residents and businesses in our community who steadfastly support numerous worthy causes, contributing to the vibrancy of our city. We reserve a special place of gratitude for our valued advertising partners, who play an integral role in bringing this magazine to your doorstep each month. They share our vision and purpose of delivering inspiring stories and the uplifting news of our community directly to you. As we approach the holiday season and prepare to gather with our loved ones, let us remember the essence of Thanksgiving. May we take a moment to ponder what truly imbues life with meaning and pause to reflect upon the blessings that grace our lives. Wishing you and your family an abundance of blessings,

ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON
Gio is not only the owner but also serves as an acronym that has emboldened the evolution of the Chesterfield-based Sicilian restaurant and pizzeria over the last decade. “It means we are ‘Growing Into Ourselves,’” Jessica says. “We are becoming who we always wanted to be, and the community has embraced it. We are still the same family place to gather. And we are still a place who wants to give back to our community. At our core, we’re still the same: the same flavors, the same food, the same cocktails. We are just coming into our own.” Jess calls it a “collaboration between team talent and customer input. We’ve all had a hand in who we are today. There is not a single item on the menu that we’ve created that hasn’t had some influence from our guests. That way they’ve been able to grow with us.” For Gio and Jess, it’s just being grateful to the community they serve, and showing it through the way they take their customers' ideas and needs into consideration
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY PIERCE
Gio and Jessica LaFata have a lot for which to be thankful. And they want their community to know it. Gio Modern Italian is celebrating a decade of delicious success in business this year, and the LaFatas say the community they enjoy is their most treasured accomplishment of all. With a talented team and supportive community at its core, Gio and Jess were encouraged to expand the menu beyond traditional Italian. Throughout the years, the restaurant leaned into their love for creativity to welcome more modern Italian cuisine, a long list of worldly wines and handcrafted cocktails. Quickly, their award-winning “Happy Hour,” catering and trendy “Brunch and Bottomless Bubbly” began to soar. As the restaurant grew into something greater, Gio and Jess decided it was time to give it a look and name to match the feel. To kick off celebrations, Gio and Jess did a full remodel of the restaurant and changed the name to Gio Modern Italian.

“Even though we are the same since our name change, our menu has evolved. Our staff has grown. Our community has grown. We are still the same family; and we feel the same as we did when we opened 10 years ago. Gio and I have always treated this place like a second home.”
in everything they do. “The connection is strong with our community,” Jess says. “This is the time of the year where catering really shines. And our catering has bonded us with the community. Being part of these life events and celebrating as family and friends come together is so special. I tell our team that we will be a part of the memory books. Our photos will be in wedding albums and baby books forever. It’s a very intimated thing to be chosen to be a part of such special life events.” “Even though we are the same since our name change, our menu has evolved. Our staff has grown. Our community has grown. We are still the same family; and we feel the same as we did when we opened 10 years ago. Gio and I have always treated this place like a second home.” Jess says part of showing gratitude to the community is offering new menu items and seasonal specials that people can get excited about, even if they come in three times a week. Gio offers seasonal specials weekly to give variety to guests looking for in-season specials or something different for those who come in every day. Gio’s “Apple Cider Sangria,” is undoubtedly a fan favorite, made up of champagne, apple cider, crown royal apple, fireball cinnamon whiskey, fresh apple slices and a cinnamon stick. Gio’s Butternut Squash Pizza uses a virgin olive oil base instead of marinara, soppressata (an Italian dry salami), burrata cheese and is topped with fresh herbs, fried kale and butternut squash. 636.536.3788 GioSTL.com

The Rooted Sisters Provide Empowering Faith Community For Female Leaders Christian Business Women’s Breakfast To Be Held In Chesterfield On Nov. 7
ARTICLE BY SARAH GULDALIAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE ROOTED SISTERS
Lisa Nichols and Cindy Owens were two high-powered female leaders who met through a local forum for women in leadership: Lisa as CEO of Technology Partners and Cindy as CEO of The American Red Cross at the time. The two became fast friends and learned they had more in common than leadership; they shared faith in Jesus. The two decided they would join a forum of fellow Christian business women together, as well. Yet, after months of searching, they realized no such network existed in St. Louis. So, they did what two energetic, female leaders do and started their own network. This is how The Rooted Sisters, an International 501(c) (3), formed in St. Louis during 2015, along with their friend, Tina Wesley. The mission of The Rooted Sisters is to provide a safe place to educate, equip and empower
Christian businesswomen to grow in a closer, more intimate relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. Now, in its eighth year, The Rooted Sisters is comprised of a network of 400 female leaders, from St. Louis to Singapore, who meet regularly. They gather for Bible Study, fellowship events, such as local Happy Hours, and produce recognized events locally, including the Christian Business Women’s Breakfast and the “Faith-Fueled” Mastermind Retreat. The first annual Christian Business Women’s Breakfast took place in 2017 with 325 women in attendance. Now, in its sixth year, they expect nearly 1,000 women gathered together on Nov. 7, at The Crossing, a church in Chesterfield. The Rooted Sisters have welcomed acclaimed Christian speakers and music artists, from CONTINUED >

“We have found that women across the nation yearn for connection with other likeminded Christian women in business. This is exactly why The Rooted Sisters was created,” says Owens. Dove-Award winning musician, Tasha Layton, to Hope Heals Founder, Kathryn Wolf, to their breakfast. This year, they welcome best-selling author and former CMO for Starbucks, Emily Chang, as their guest speaker. They will rally around this year’s theme, “Salty & Bright,” where they will be encouraged to radiate light in the Marketplace. “We have found that women across the nation yearn for connection with other like-minded Christian women in business. This is exactly why The Rooted Sisters was created,” says Cindy. And so, women from across the region will gather together in November to form meaningful connections through caffeine-fueled fellowship, prayer and worship. The Rooted Sisters participants also have seen an overwhelming response to their breakfast from local and international partners, ranging from our local JOY FM station to Cigna. The word continues to spread about the breakfast and the group at-large, and they continue adding sisters to their family each month. In addition to their annual breakfast, their passionate board of directors is busy planning their annual “Faith-Fueled” Mastermind Retreat for 2024. This will take place April 26-29 at the famous Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri. The retreat in the Missouri Ozark Mountains will overlook sparkling Table Rock Lake. The Rooted Sisters’ Faith-Fueled Retreat is a very unique mastermind experience with a whole-life focus. They invite female leaders to refresh, refocus and release in this special time and space. The retreat is designed to catapult women in leadership to spiritual and professional victory. Through engaging, interactive sessions on business, health and wellness, and spiritualgrowth, the Faith-Fueled Retreat helps female leaders master their God-given vision.Their goal is to help them return to intentionality in how they lead. They believe this starts with each woman as an individual. Tickets for 2023 Christian Business Women’s Breakfast and information about the 2024 FaithFueled Retreat can be viewed and purchased online. MAKE A-WISH CHAPTER CELEBRATES 40 YEARS Ja'mon, blood disorder wish to have a shopping spree
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
GROUP NEARS 10,000 WISHES GRANTED FOR YOUTH WITH CRITICAL ILLNESSES

Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas staff, families and supporters are celebrating the nonprofit's 40th anniversary and four decades of granting wishes to nearly 10,000 wish kids. Since its inception in 1983, the Ballwin-based chapter has enriched the lives of wish kids, all of whom are battling critical illnesses, along with their families across Missouri and Kansas through a variety of wish experiences. “Over the past 40 years, we've been able to grant the heartfelt wishes of more than 9,500 children throughout Missouri and Kansas,” says Caroline Schmidt, president and CEO, Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas. “This is only possible through the incredible support that we've received from our caring communities. A wish has the power to transform lives, bring communities together and create life-changing moments.” Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas was founded four decades ago in Springfield, Missouri. The chapter's first wish was a private celebrity wish where a young child wished to meet his favorite athlete. The chapter’s first publicized wish was
for a boy named JD who was battling cancer and wished for a white poodle puppy to bring him joy during his medical journey. Throughout the years, Make-A-Wish hosts several annual fundraising events in St. Louis, Kansas City, Wichita and Springfield to enable the chapter’s work and mission. This spring, they hosted the 2023 Walk for Wishes presented by Centene and Spectrum at Forest Park in St. Louis. They also held a wish reveal for 17-year-old Dannah, a Maryland Heights youth fighting sickle cell disease. She’s one of three kids in her family who suffer from the disease. Her wish to go to Hawaii was granted, ushered in with a Hawaiianthemed party and a Kona shaved ice truck. During 2022, the local chapter granted more than 400 wishes to children with critical illnesses. Wishes are granted to serve as catalysts for renewed strength and encouragement to children with illnesses defined as malignant, degenerative or progressive. This year, so far at press time, 438 life-changing wishes have been granted for the children the organization serves, with 164 of those youths in the St. Louis metropolitan region. Brian Miller, vice president of marketing and communications, Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas, says wish children are between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 years old. He says the youths typically face various types of cancer, neurological conditions, cardiovascular challenges and respiratory issues, as well as blood and kidney health threats. "The majority of wish kids, or 35 percent, are between the ages of 6 to 9. Twenty-five percent are older than 14. Twenty-three percent are 5 or younger, and 17 percent are between 10 and 13 years old," explains Brian.
Claire, cancer - wish to go to Saint Thomas
Patrycja, cancer - wish to go to Walt Disney World
Kyer, gastrointestinal disorder-wish to build an airplane
“These wishes not only provide respite to families facing the reality that their child has been diagnosed with a critical illness, but they also give a piece of childhood back to those children in a time when it is needed most,” says Caroline. “The majority of wish children go on to live healthy lives and reflect on their wish as a turning point in their recovery. Through our enduring partnership with our volunteers, donors, community supporters and staff, we look forward to another 40 years of granting wishes.” Hannah Pope, marketing and communications manager, Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas, says the Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas chapter currently has more than 300 wish granters that volunteer their time and resources to help wish kids receive their one true wish. However, Hannah says more volunteers are needed. For volunteering, fundraising, go online to Wish.org/MoKan. To refer a child, submit it at Wish.org/Refer. The local chapter team members hope that donors will remember and select Make-A-Wish among their nonprofits to support through charitable contributions on 'GivingTuesday,' which is Nov. 28. Make-A-Wish America is known as the largest wish-granting organization. The group collectively has fulfilled the wishes of 550,000-plus wishes worldwide since the organization’s founding in 1980. A noble life deserves a second chance is the motto of Equus Rescue and Therapy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit horse sanctuary in Millstadt, Illinois. However, in the case of this unique initiative, both horses and humans come together to save each other. Margo Sutter, Equus (Latin for horse) founder and executive director, says they rescue and rehabilitate horses who are retired or injured from the race track, living in horrific conditions, and from kill pens on their way to slaughter. "We give them a second chance at life, whether that be a career, a new home or a dignified retirement." She wishes more people got to witness the power of healing from horses, who have a keen sense for syncing with people and their emotions. "Horses are the queens and kings of nonverbal communications, and they know what we need." She adds that Equus Rescue also gives back to the community through programs serving at-risk youth, such as their Equine Angels program. "These are four-day camps for youths, and along with learning how to care for horses, we teach the cowboy code of ethics about respect, responsibility, commitment and leadership, all in positive ways." Within the Equus Readers Program, children read out loud to the horses to practice self-confidence and public speaking. Youths typically are brought to the program by parents, church groups or school educators. Margo says this activity is especially geared toward reading-challenged children who are younger than third grade because the horses are nonjudgmental and provide an adoring audience. She adds that the program was suggested by 10-year-old Aleksandra Ross, daughter of Natasha Chekoudjian and Jason Ross, the husband/wife team behind luxury belts and jewelry brand Artemas Quibble. Natasha is a St. Louis native who became a fashion designer, and the family relocated back to the region during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aleksandra first raised money for Equus by operating a snow cone stand in 2022. She and her younger brother, Oliver "Oli," raised $1,000. She then discovered personally the value of reading to the horses, and now is expanding into selling stuffed animals for the nonprofit. "We're also expanding Warriors H.E.A.L., a program that honors our returning war veterans and active duty forces. The acronym stands for Horses Enlighten Awareness and Learning. have much in common with our horses who had to face their own traumas," explains Margo. "Our horses come to us 100 percent in the way they've survived, with color and texture of what happened, and they learn to go forward here, with unconditional love. So can veterans." Margo says horses and veterans understand each other very well. "Equine therapy can achieve in 15 minutes what talk therapy achieves in 15 years. An abused horse cannot live in the past, or it will die. Ugly things happen to them and to people. Humans tend to relive the past, trying to sort it out, and get locked up in emotional chains. With the help of these horses, our veterans can release the ugly things that happened." For veterans interested in "connecting the dots" through the H.E.A.L. program, Margo says the Equus team is hosting a three-day training at the facility during Nov. 17, 18 and 19. Equus does place some of the rescued horses into loving, private homes, but many of the horses are permanent residents of the farm. This rescue/ therapy program relies solely on generous donations and kindness from others. Margo says legacy gifts or leads on foundation funding would be more than appreciated and cherished. 618.631.3733 EquusRescue.org

On The Table FOUNDER OF AMALIA CULINARY ART SHARES RECIPE FOR PREPARING ANCIENT GRAIN FARRO My culinary journey began at a very young age while watching my grandmother in her kitchen. I learned by her side, and the unconditional love and support she provided gave me the strength I have today. This asset allowed me to pivot during my darkest times. I am a registered dental hygienist and have been working in dentistry for more than 29 years. When the dental office closed during March 2020, my heart sank. I remember sitting in my garage for days, thinking the world was about to end. As I sat there, feeling overwhelmed and sad, I decided to pull myself together and bake some bread. This was the very first cooking lesson I received. I felt her presence that day, and all
I could see while I was kneading the bread were her mighty hands working the dough and guiding me through the steps on how the dough should look and feel. From that day forward, I decided to turn my enthusiasm for cooking into a career with the launch of my boutique catering business and food blog. I bring a refined approach to the beloved Mediterranean tradition, using fresh, seasonal, and quality ingredients. My ethos is centered around my family and culture. The art of sharing and gathering around the table is an integral part of my life. This ancient Greek value, philoxenia, lives deep in my heart and brings me so much joy to connect and share my culture.

Lemon Olive Oil Cake
• 1 cup farro • 2 1/2 cups vegetable broth or water • 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and diced into 1-inch cubes • 8 ounces mushrooms (cremini, shiitake, or your choice), sliced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 small onion, finely chopped
• • • •
2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional) • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Horiatiki/Greek Salad
Lahanosalata Greek Cabbage Salad
1. In a medium saucepan, combine farro and vegetable broth or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for about 25-30 minutes, or until the farro is tender but still has a slight chewiness. Drain any excess liquid and set aside. 2. Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss the diced butternut squash with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the squash out on a baking sheet and roast for 20-25 minutes or until tender and slightly caramelized. Remove from the oven and set aside.
3. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat in a skillet. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until they are browned. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set aside. 4. Prepare the Medley: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion pieces and cook until they become translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Add the farro, roasted butternut squash and sautéed mushrooms. Garnish and serve. AmaliaCulinaryArt.com

Gather
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

ad i t i o n al Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.

How To Tips: Let’s Prep The Guest Room For The Holidays
The holiday season is right around the corner, so it’s time to get the guest room up to five stars. Over the years, there are a few prepping tasks I always do before I host to make an enjoyable stay for out-of-towners.

Instructions: 1/
Time to make that extra room user-friendly and somewhat cozy. Check that outlets are easily accessible for phone chargers and make sure there is an open spot for suitcases to park. I like to put the linens somewhere they can find easily, or I even set a fresh set out for their arrival.
2/
Stock up on extras. Keep a few essentials stocked, such as a toothbrush, shampoo or a

razor, so guests aren’t in a pinch if they forget something. I also make sure there are some welcoming luxuries, such as nice lotion and a cozy blanket, in plain sight for them to enjoy.
3/
Go the extra mile for the guests who traveled far. Shopping around for some local St. Louis goodies is a fun way to welcome guests and thank them for taking the time to pay a visit. Or, add fresh flowers to the room, or fresh eucalyptus to the shower for a hotel feel.
Mel is a St. Louis local and has been writing for City Lifestyle for several years. She loves traveling just as much as she loves exploring home sweet St. Louis.
