ST. LOUIS BLUES HOCKEY PROGRAMS EMBRACE YOUTHS OF VARIOUS AGES AND BACKGROUNDS ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Scoring big in giving kids new chances: Since St. Louis Blues representatives partnered with the NHL and NHLPA during 2016-2017 to create "Little Blues," a lowcost, learn-to-play program to allow kids to experience hockey for the first time, more area children are discovering love of the sport--1,200 youths benefited from this program during this year alone. The seven-week introduction-to-hockey program is intended for children ages 4-9 who haven't yet participated in organized youth hockey. Randy Girsch, St. Louis Blues vice president, community development and event management, says the Little Blues program cost is $250 per child. "That includes six on-ice practices with Blues alumni, a Little Blues graduation ceremony and a complete set of hockey equipment," he adds. Most sessions take place year-round at the Centene Community Ice Center, the Blue's official practice facility. Randy says participants attend an equipment fitting event three weeks prior to the first ice session, to ensure comfort and safety. The program is financially made possible by program sponsor, First Community Credit Union. The St. Louis Blues also offer the "Street Blues" initiative, a free ball hockey program aimed to get elementary and middle school-aged children interested in hockey. Recipient grade schools receive a curriculum and complete set of equipment for a full PE class or after-school activity. Randy says 100,000-plus children to date have participated. Additionally, the "North City Blues" program provides a free, after-school program and the opportunity to learn to play ice hockey for students between the ages of 4-10 and enrolled in KIPP Schools and/or Friendly Temple. national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. Practices are held weekly and are led by Blues alum Jamal Mayers, as community youth hockey advisor. "To give kids the opportunity to come be on the ice is an amazing experience," he assures. "We're all super proud of the number of youths going through these creative programs. Investing in youth hockey provides children with helpful lifelong traits, such as leadership, teamwork and responsibility. Kids also make lifelong friends," says Randy, who adds that girls' hockey is the fastest growing portion of the sport. “Thanks to First Community becoming a partner on the Blues youth hockey platform, we've been able to grow and offer these programs at reduced or no cost,” he adds. Join The Blues Charitable Initiative Blues for Kids, the charitable trust of the St. Louis Blues, has a mission to positively impact programs and services that improve health and wellness of youth in the St. Louis area. With support from Blues players, alumni, volunteers and fans, the trust has contributed more than $9.4 million to the St. Louis community in four areas of giving: cancer care and awareness; health and wellness; education and youth hockey development. The trust was created in 1998 to honor former Blues player Doug Wickenheiser, No. 14, who passed away in 1999 after a long battle with cancer. Randy says recipient 501(c)3 organizations must be based in Missouri and within a 75-mile radius of the Enterprise Center. The Blues for Kids grant program opens once per year, at the conclusion of the season. Multiple grant awardees typically are chosen, with the average grant ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. “These funds allow Blues for Kids the ability to continue providing financial grants to more than 100 local not-for-profit organizations, and the generosity of our fans also allows the opportunity to create meaningful partnerships and support the development of programs that fill a need in the community," adds Randy.

Roots To Heal And Grow “MARYGROVE IS HERE FOR KIDS WHO NEVER GAVE UP, WHEN THEIR PARENTS GAVE UP ON THEM” ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON

“I don’t want that to define me. I want you to know me as the girl who’s improved, not the girl who is stuck, not the abused little girl that I was. I am the girl that’s going to college.” Allison’s words did not fall on deaf ears. The Marygrove Independent Living Program Resident and recipient of the 2021 Eagan Scholarship Award spoke them to a packed banquet room at Marygrove’s 2022 BLOOM fundraising event at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis in early March. Allison was nine when she came to Marygrove. A child scarred by abuse, she says she had begun to lose hope and even contemplated ending her life. But Allison found a safe place at Marygrove—a place that enabled her to build a life wholly different from and in spite of her past. “I thought that no one was going to help me, and I was wrong. If I could tell my little 9-year-old self something, I would tell her to keep going. So, thank you—all of you… for me, you’ve done enough.” Allison is now working and attending Ranken Technical College with the goal of obtaining a degree in electrical systems and becoming a line worker for a utility company. She told attendees of BLOOM: “Marygrove is here for the kids that never gave up, when their parents gave up on them." Just $18 provides a birthday cake for a Marygrove-associated foster child. Fifty dollars pays for a safe home for a day. Five

hundred and thirty-nine dollars provides two weeks of healthy meals for two kids, and $1,010 will cover the cost of five therapy sessions for two kids. But attendees of the BLOOM event didn’t stop there. When all was said and done, they dug deep and raised more than $575,000 to support the Florissant, Missouri-based nonprofit. Marygrove's Therapeutic Residential Treatment Program provides homes to 90 kids each day in its six residential "cottages." The money raised at BLOOM ensures these kids continue to have a safe home, food, education, health care and all of their basic needs met. For 170-plus years, Marygrove has been a place where children, youth and families have found hope and healing. Their motto is simple: “Sharing the love of Jesus Christ, Marygrove provides a safe home, compassionate care, and high-quality mental health services to children who have experienced significant trauma, to restore their childhood, and equip them for their future.” Founded in 1849 as the House of Good Shepherd, a St. Louis Home for girls, Marygrove is now a $12-million nonprofit organization and one of eight federated agencies of Catholic Charities of St. Louis. Young people who come to Marygrove are often struggling with debilitating emotional and behavioral issues resulting from abuse, neglect and other trauma. They have in most cases endured multiple failed placements at other organizations, cycled through foster homes, or even survived failed adoptions. Many come from severely disruptive family situations. Some have even been discharged from psychiatric hospitals directly to Marygrove. Marygrove caregivers indicate: “The emotional toll a severely dysfunctional and aberrant family can have on a child cannot be underestimated. Where nurturing, love and security are necessary for stable psychological and emotional growth, our children have experienced the neglect of primal needs. They have become victims, due to their environments, and have developed profound emotional, detachment and trust issues manifesting as just the tip of what lies below. Most of our youth are diagnosed with behavioral and psychiatric disorders as a result of abuse, neglect, abandonment and other trauma. Without Marygrove, most of our children would have few, if any, alternatives for housing and face life on the street, in prison, or in an institution.” “It’s not enough to tell a child they are safe,” auctioneer Fletcher Lane told bidders at the BLOOM event. “At Marygrove, they must feel safe, too. Our kids deserve to feel safe. Don’t they?” His comments were followed by two attendees bidding $25,615 to Marygrove—an amount that provides one-week around-the-clock essential care for 120 children living on the Marygrove campus. “The ultimate goal of true nonprofit service work is to help create a world that no longer needs us,” says Marygrove CEO Michael Meehan, Ph.D. "The last few years have been extraordinarily difficult for so many industries, and nonprofit agencies like Marygrove, whose work centers on providing 24-hour care to youth in foster care, have been among those hit the hardest. Perhaps at no time in my 35-plus years in the field have we needed the support of our donors more than we do now in our work to provide healing and hope to some of Missouri's most vulnerable children."

Allison

As one of the largest therapeutic residential treatment programs in Missouri, Marygrove and professional caregivers provide compassion, encouragement and structure, while licensed masters-level therapists offer individualized treatment plans and counseling to children there. Many of the children who arrive at Marygrove do so with immediate needs—things such as clean clothes, food and medical treatment. They arrive without the most basic belief that they will have a bed, a meal, clean clothes or safety. “Each child comes with a heartbreaking personal story,” Marygrove representatives report. “Marygrove enriches the lives of nearly 700 young people each year, ages birth-21, through a broad continuum of residential and community-based programming and wraparound services, including therapeutic residential treatment and foster care, transitional and independent living, special education and recreational therapy, family counseling, and parenting education.” Marygrove uses trauma-informed care and a positive youth development framework to help mitigate adverse childhood experiences while preventing future homelessness and trauma. Eighty-five percent of Marygrove youth are homeless or are wards of the state. Ninety-five percent live under the federal poverty line. Eighty-five percent have severe mental health issues, 30 percent have experienced failed adoptions, and 85 percent have survived abuse, physical or emotional trauma. Last year, 242 staff members served 674 young people from 120 counties in Missouri and Illinois, on Marygrove’s 43-acre campus (2705 Mullanphy Lane, Florissant, Missouri 63031) overlooking the bluffs of the Missouri River. 314.830.6201 MarygroveChildren.org

PEACEMAKER DEFENSE GROUP EMPLOYS FORMER MILITARY, POLICE AND SPECIAL FORCES TO OFFER SPECIALIZED SECURITY AND CANINE SERVICES ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON

Trainer Andy Moulton

Six years ago, he combined his vast repertoire of skills with those of other law enforcement professionals and military veterans to form Peacemaker Defense Group.

someone wants, they are going to come after you. Our job is to think of what could happen before it happens, and ensure that it doesn’t happen.” Andy says his services also extend to travel security, including reacting to natural disasters, acts of terrorism or general flat-out crime. “It’s all-encompassing. We protect every aspect of your life.” And while Andy certainly caters to highnet-worth individuals, such as corporate executives, movie stars, musicians and wealthy families, his protective services extend to typical men and women as well.

The Peacemaker client is not part of any specific demographic, claims Andy. “They are all proud Americans from all walks of life.” And while many do, not all of his clientele have deep pockets, he says. “It's not all about millionaires. Some individuals take $200 courses to give them insight for safety. I have clients who are ladies who work at gas stations and need service dogs.” Peacemaker offers shooting courses at its gun range in Pacific, Missouri. It trains police officers and offers medical, first aid and tactical courses for anyone. Peacemaker consultants design security plans by analyzing threats, risks and vulnerabilities at any private home or business. An overall security plan might include something as simple as increasing lighting around the exterior of a home or business or something as extreme as installing a 20-foot fence around a perimeter. The business or family may need a 24-hour security detail or a trained protective dog. The personal protection dog or Peacemaker K9 is “a refined tool that adds more to an individual’s or businesses, security plan,” Andy says. “Depending on the level of training, people can travel with a dog instead of one of us.” Peacemaker acquires dog breeds in Holland known to be loyal, protective working dogs, such as German and Dutch Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Giant Schnauzers. Peacemaker dogs are deployed around the globe in numerous protection capacities, from privately owned family protection dogs to police and military special warfare dogs.

The Peacemaker K9 is confident, clear-headed, highly intelligent, socially affectionate and of stable temperament with character formed through professional training. “They are high caliber dogs developed and raised with intent and purpose,” - Andy Moulton.

32

Fully trained, Andy says the Peacemaker K9 can cost anywhere from $35,000 to $140,000. That two-year training process includes ongoing relationships between Peacemaker, its customers and the dogs. Andy says the Peacemaker K9 is confident, clearheaded, highly intelligent, socially affectionate and of stable temperament with character formed through professional training. “They are high caliber dogs developed and raised with intent and purpose,” he adds. Pet services offered at Peacemaker’s training facility in Pacific also are for anyone trying to achieve a positive, happy and well-behaved dog though, Andy says. The firm offers six-week boarding and training, which includes multiple training sessions per day, as well as socialization, leash and house manners and basic obedience sessions. Canine services offered include: site protection, aggression/acquisition, explosive detection, drug detection and search and rescue.

Andy says 85 percent of Peacemaker employees are former law enforcement and veterans. He says along with partner, Alex Ivy, — a veteran Marine, who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan — he seeks to serve people. “We're creating good jobs for people who've given so much to their country. We're utilizing their particular skill sets in positive ways. We're a very proud American company with Midwest values. It’s always been about helping people. That’s the goal. If I don’t do it, someone’s going to do it the wrong way, causing havoc and chaos and taking money from people. It’s about doing the right thing and sticking to those core Midwest values.” 877.236.7805 PeacemakerDefenseGroup.com

BAR K TAKES THE “DOG PARK” CONCEPT TO WHOLE NEW LEVEL

A DOG BAR? It’s a dog utopia…plenty of furry friends, live music, special treats, spa services, a rock wall, splash area, puppy parties, yoga and more! Bar K St. Louis, in The Grove, is a unique new destination featuring a bar, restaurant, event space and dog park. Owners Leib Dodell and Dave Hensley had a vision to create a place where people and their dogs could co-exist in a fun, entertaining and creative environment. More than just a dog park, it would be an entire pet-friendly community that offers a great food and beverage experience, and provides a one-of-akind experience for humans and dogs.

The St. Louis location, at 4565 McRee Ave., in the Botanical Heights neighborhood, opened on Nov. 19, 2021, roughly four years after Leib and Dave started the first Bar K Lab pop-up in Kansas City, Missouri. Leib says Bar K is all about bringing dogs and people together in a fun, joyful and safe way in any kind of weather. People can use it as a shared work space, where you work while your dog is being fully supervised by trained doghandlers to keep everything safe and clean; you can get your work done while they’re having fun. Neither co-owner had worked previously in the restaurant or pet industry. Leib says they were just two dog owners who noticed an opportunity to improve upon the dog park experience. Bar K features a 2-acre, fully-staffed outdoor dog park plus a 10,000-square-foot staffed indoor dog park, three bars and a restaurant for the pup’s owners, The Seresto Stage for live entertainment, Doggie DayCamp, boarding, grooming and training. There also are adoption events every weekend. Leib says that aside from potty training, socialization might be the most important thing you and your new pup do together. That's why they created Puppies Night Out, held on Thursdays 6-8 p.m. Puppies’ Night Out is an opportunity to get new puppies (age 3 to 9 months) some much needed socialization. Trainers from Kennelwood Pet Resort are on site to give training tips and answer questions about new pups' behaviors. The weekly event is free for members. For guests, it’s $10 for the first dog, and $5 for each additional dog in the pack. The restaurant at Bar K serves freshly made food that incorporates local ingredients and serves locally brewed beers. Menu items include Chicken Avocado Sandwich and Roasted Broccoli with Cranberries and Feta. But it not only caters to its human patrons…Bar K’s cooks work with nutritionists from Purina to offer healthy and tasty menu items for dogs, like "Turkey and Sweet Potato Meatballs," as well as “Doggie Flights” that allow dogs to sample three entrees of their choice. The St. Louis location also offers “Stay at Bar K,” which offers dog daycare, training and grooming. To visit Bar K is free for humans. For those bringing a dog, entry is $10 for the first dog ($15 on Saturdays/ Sundays) and $5 for each additional dog. Annual or monthly memberships are available, too. 314.530.9990 BarkDogBar.com

CREATING INDIVIDUAL BIRTHDAY MEMORIES CELEBRATIONS FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH IN SHELTERS ARE HONORED BY VOLUNTEERS OF LOCAL NONPROFIT

42

O UR TOWN | ENTERTA INME NT

Creating fun, memorable birthday experiences for toddlers, children and young adults in homeless and domestic violence shelters is the mission of St. Louis metropolitan-based volunteers spearheaded by "Chief Birthday Officer" Rolanda Finch. As founder of It’s Your Birthday, Inc., Rolanda says the group is proud of how individualized they've been able to make each recipient's birthday. "We believe all children should have a happy birthday, no matter their situation. Our goal is to ensure each child, and sometimes also a parent, feels special. Help from communities surely helps that happen." The group works through St. Louis area school districts, homeless facilities and domestic violence shelters, in addition to

similar charitable shelters in Cape Girardeau, Hannibal and Springfield. Rolanda says they assist with children 1 to 22 years old. On average, 15 to 25 birthdays are acknowledged or fulfilled each month. Since being launched in 2014, Rolanda says there have been nearly 1,700 memories created through this nonprofit. "Children in shelters are very confused, IYBI helps bring a sense of normalcy during this time in their young lives," she adds. In observance of the nonprofit's eighth 'organizational birthday' during September, the following are eight ways to assist the group: • Participate in IYBI fundraisers, such as toy drives, or donate new toys for birthday boxes. • Sponsor a Birthday-in-a-Box ($150 value) for a shelter or mom to provide the birthday memory to her child. • Cover the cost of a mom or shelter to shop for a child’s birthday gift from a curated Amazon Wish List. • Fund gifts for new moms who give birth while in shelters. • Create from-scratch birthday cards and inspirational cards, which is a great way for a group, such as Girl Scouts, to complete a project together. (No personal names, group titles or details should be included by creators.) • Provide $15 fast food gift cards or hygiene products/personal care items for older recipients. • Volunteer as small group or individual to help organize IYBI office, either administratively or toy/box reasons. • Sponsor a Birthday Surprise ($50 value) or other specific initiative. Rolanda says with a bit of training, volunteers also can become "Birthday Heroes," who represent the nonprofit as the primary contact with a designated shelter and who plan birthday options for each child. "We also are seeking new board members," she adds. "The laughter and smiles we create are priceless." Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 2222, Florissant, MO 63033; picked up by scheduled volunteers; physically dropped off at the Its Your Birthday office, 2900 Frank Scott Parkway, Suite 968B, Belleville, IL 62223. Additionally, checks or cash can be mailed to apply toward purchasing birthday treats. (Pssst, Sept. 14 is Rolanda's birthday, so that will be an extra special month all around.) info@itsyourbirthdayinc.org 314.623.8301 ItsYourBirthdayInc.org AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Burns Recovered SUPPORTERS HELP BURN SURVIVORS LIVE WITHOUT LIMITATIONS, FEAR OR INSECURITY

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED FROM BURNS RECOVERED Starting within a St. John's Mercy Hospital Burn Unit in 1983, a small group of dedicated volunteers began to make positive differences in the lives of burn and smoke inhalation survivors and their families. As a steadfast nonprofit, Burns Recovered, the group's three staffers operate in partnership with health care facilities to provide hope and support to survivors. "We specifically assist during patients' recoveries, and we promote community education about burn injuries and prevention," says Carrie Warren, Burns Recovered executive director.

46

I NSP IR E D BY | WEL L NESS

Carrie says programming eventually was expanded to continue beyond hospital stays and to serve survivors statewide. She says they formulate individualized and group peer support for burn survivors; provide housing support for families during the hospitalization of burn survivors; host a retreat regarding the special needs of young adult burn survivors, ages 18-25; provide a scholarship fund for burn survivors; and organize a holiday giving program for burn survivors and their families. One of the group's flagship programs is Midwest Children’s Burn Camp, which provides unique summer camp experiences for children who have survived severe burns and smoke inhalation.

"Burns Recovered is funded entirely through the generous donations of individuals and business entities who believe in our mission. Our camps, retreats, programs, and services would not exist without donations," Carrie says. The nonprofit is supported by an 18-member volunteer board of directors. In 2021, Carrie says the Midwest Children’s Burn Camp was accredited by the American Camp Association, the only nationwide accrediting organization for all types and designs of organized camps. In 2022, Burns Recovered was awarded the Judith Schubert Scholarship from the Crisis Prevention Institute, she adds.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE GROUP INCLUDE: • Fill the Boot/Firefighter and EMS partnerships • Midwest Children’s Burn Camp • Peer Supporter (burn survivor) • Special Events (trivia night, picnics, holiday party, bowling) • Business operations and marketing • Event planning and coordination Carrie says donations can be financial or in-kind items. She says corporate and individual sponsorships are critical to the nonprofit's future programs, particularly sponsors who support the group's annual fundraising special events, such as a trivia night and golf scramble. Additionally, cabin counselors are recruited each year for the burn camp. Counselors must be at least 21 years of age and counselors-in-training must be at least 18, relays Carrie. One Burns Recovered event that could be supported is the 29th Annual Firefighter and EMS Sand Volleyball Tournament. It will be held Aug. 27 at 11801 Tesson Ferry Road in St. Louis. Mark Chrun, St. Louis City Fire Department captain, is organizing the tournament. Call Mark at 314.488.9321 to learn about forming a team or getting involved in the event. He says the goal is to raise $10,000 for the nonprofit's burn camp. 314.939.1550 BRSG.org
