Whether a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a male role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big influence on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or even someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community and to their families. To all the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. Guests enjoyed a night of supporting the work of Cardinal Glennon through hearing the impact of the hospital and were entertained by comedian Kevin Nealon and country music megastar Brad Paisley. St. Louis County Residents Can Register For Property Fraud Alert The St. Louis County Recorder of Deeds office staff encourages residents to sign up for a free, online subscription service that will allow them to track possible fraudulent activity for when documents with their registered name are recorded. Sign up through website or call 1.800.728.3858. Residents will receive a notification so they can decide what action to next take. Residents can sign up three names per phone number or four names per email address. According to FBI data, property fraud is one of the fastest-growing, white-collar crimes.

Gordon Gundaker has been “selling St. Louis” for nearly 70 years. At 88, he is currently president and CEO of Gundaker Commercial Group. He joined the organization after retiring from his post as president and CEO of Coldwell Banker Gundaker, the St. Louis metro area’s largest residential real estate company, in July of 2007. A native St. Louisan, Gordon’s success story begins in 1944 when, at 20 years old, he moved from pumping gas and working in the tool and die trade to his first real estate sales position. In 1956, he joined the John J. Armbruster Company and rapidly rose through the ranks from top sales associate to vice president and eventually part owner in 1964. In 1967, he was recognized by the Real Estate Board of Metropolitan St. Louis as the top residential salesperson in the area and a year later, he and his wife, Donna, established Gundaker Realtors in St. Louis. “I enjoyed the fact that my company was selling the American Dream of homeownership. Everyone wants a place to call home and I was privileged to have a company and salespeople that provided this opportunity to them. Being part of the growth of St. Louis, whether in my residential real estate company or presently in my commercial company, has always been a desire of mine,” says Gordon. The company grew to include 2,500 agents, becoming the largest sales organization in the history of St. Louis real estate, and in 1999, was ranked as the seventh largest independently-owned residential real estate company in the U.S. In 2001, his wife, Donna, passed away, and Gordon sold his residential interest to NRT, Inc., parent company of Coldwell Banker. He remained as president for five years. “He thought it was important for the agents to have a national presence,” explains his daughter Dana, who, along with her sister, Kim Magaletta, remained with the company. Gordon says one thing he attributes the success of the company to is his understanding that “Treating the Customer Right” was most important. "I consider the St. Louis community as my customer, but also my salespeople are my customers,” he adds. Gordon says he also strongly believes in educating employees and giving them the tools to be successful. He says he’s always believed, “If we have happy agents and happy employees, we have happy customers.” “It’s amazing…Dad still goes into the office every day, at age 88,” says Dana. She began her real estate career in 1983 and was named "Rookie of the Year" in 1984. In 1986, she became a broker and has since managed three different offices in St. Louis. Since 2011, she has led Coldwell Banker Gundaker's Town & Country Office, which has been the No. 1 office in the company for the past 20 years. Kim runs the company’s No. 2 highest-selling office, in St. Peters. And Amy works in that office as well. Gordon's current wife, Jan, works in the business as well. In addition to his passion and success in the real estate industry, Gordon spends time with his large family of five children, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (with three on the way).

He is known for his involvement in numerous charities and civic projects, including the Foster Children’s Holiday Project with the Division of Family Services, serving as president of the Arthritis Foundation’s area chapter and on the boards of the Kilo Foundation, Boy’s Hope/Girl’s Hope and KUTO. He’s a member of The National Association of REALTORS and is a past director of the St. Louis Association of Realtors and the Missouri Association of Realtors. In 1989, he was honored as the St. Louis Businessman of the Year by the St. Louis Rabbinical College and in 1998, was named “Realtor of the Year” by St. Louis Association of Realtors. He's a philanthropist, a family man, and a legend in real estate. When asked about retiring any time soon, Gordon simply says, “I have no plans to retire.” That pretty well wraps up Gordon Gundaker’s philosophy. His long journey has been about learning, teaching, hard work and building relationships. That’s a recipe for success!

Though he shares his father’s name, he doesn’t use it to get ahead. He really doesn’t need to. He’s just that good. Osborne Earl "Nikko" Smith Jr. has made his own way, and he says his dad, baseball hall-offamer and 13X Gold Glove winner, Osborne Earl “Ozzie” Smith, wouldn’t want it any other way. So, what happens when your father—“The Wizard”—is arguably the best defensive shortstop of all time, but you want to sing and dance? Well, Nikko Smith says, you sing and dance. And he’s been doing just that since he was a boy in the youth choir of the First Baptist Church of Chesterfield. A gifted singer, songwriter and dancer, whose soulful vocals took him to the top 10 of “American Idol,” Nikko first went to Los Angeles as part of a group of other young, hopeful musicians he had met when he was 14 working with Team 11—a compilation of some of the St. Louis region’s best singers and dancers formed by St. Louis television pioneer and CEO of KPLR-TV, Ted Koplar. “We had grown up together in Team 11. We figured whatever comes at us, we’ll handle it together,” he says. But things didn’t go quite as planned. The group—dubbed “The Platinum Shades”—was offered an opportunity to work solely with the management company owned by actor and rapper, Will Smith. As it turned out, though, one of the members of the group abandoned the others in LA causing the deal to fall through. The loss was profound, but Nikko realized later that returning to St. Louis would put him exactly where he needed to be—a lesson that would prove a sort of mantra for him as the years past. As it turned out, tryouts for “American Idol” had come to St. Louis. It was 2005 and Season 4 of Simon Fuller’s mega hit singing competition on FOX—the one that made winner Carrie Underwood a star.

Singing timeless hits, such as Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” and "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5, Nikko advanced to Hollywood and on to the Top 16. He was initially eliminated, but then fellow competitor Mario Vazquez withdrew from the competition. Nikko had barely unpacked his bags when he got a call from the show asking him to return. From there, he made it to the Top 10, which he says was all he really wanted, as the final 10 contestants were given the opportunity to record an album and tour the country. “So that gave me the exposure to do whatever I wanted and to come home to St. Louis,” he adds. Nikko returned to LA in 2014. He says at first, he went at the behest of his mom to look out for his sister, who had moved

there for a job. The two lived in a little stucco apartment in Van Nuys, California. He says what started as a family thing became more of a “soul searching” mission. "I found that it’s not about what you didn’t accomplish, but what you did accomplish. I don’t mean you couldn’t have done this or that, but you are where you are supposed to be because God put you on this journey.” Nikko was performing with bands up and down the coast of California, and doing well for himself, when the the COVID-19 pandemic hit. So, he was driving up and down the empty streets of LA, working overnights in a hospital, and seeing things he never thought he would see. “I had an opportunity to think a lot, to reset, and I thought, 'What is my goal?’ I am
watching my niece grow up on Instagram.” Today, Nikko performs high-energy, choreographed shows with the “Dirty Muggs,” singing a diverse and eclectic set list with the top party band who puts their own incredible spin on chart-toppers such as “Uptown Funk,” “Truth Hurts” and “Come Together.” They play to standing room only crowds around St. Louis with lead guitarist and band founder, Dee Dee James—who toured with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, Color Me Bad and Paula Abdul; lead vocalist, Cassandra Llea; bassist and keyboardist, KD Dobbins; bassist, Jordan Brewer; and drummer, Kevin Williams. And Nikko says he's exactly where he's supposed to be. Because after all, the end goal was always family and “just to be happy.”

Keep the excavated area level as you work. + Pack the dirt solidly all the way around with a hand tamper. BUILD GRAVEL BASE + Pour a generous amount of crushed gravel paver base into the hole so your finished base will be approximately five-inches thick.
+ After finishing the first row, check the layer in several places with a long level to be sure the structure is even. + Then, temporarily assemble the second level of blocks, making sure to stagger the joints between rows. TEST FIT THE BOWL OR INSERT Bowls and insert rings come in several standard sizes, so make sure to choose the right one for the fire pit you’re planning to build.
+ Wet the gravel thoroughly with a garden hose, and then use the hand tamper to compact it into a hard layer a couple of inches below the surface. + Check the base at several points to be sure it is level and make adjustments where necessary.

Ed Wheatley is a local author, film producer, sports historian and a weekly sports commentator on St. Louis radio. His book, The St. Louis Browns – The Story of a Beloved Team, received numerous awards. He has now shifted his attention to another key moment in St. Louis Sports history – Wrestling at the Chase -- highlighting how St. Louis came to be the professional wrestling capital of the world. “Too often these days, St. Louis doesn’t get high praise due to issues with politics, crime and other factors. But during the time of Wrestling at the Chase, St. Louis was proudly recognized as the professional wrestling capital of the world, due to Sam Muchnick’s oversight of the National Wrestling Alliance,” explains Ed. “The story of Wrestling at the Chase is not just the story of big athletic men engaging in the ring. It is so much more. It's the story of the evolution of the Chase Park Plaza Hotel becoming the most opulent place in St. Louis where kings, queens, presidents and other prominent people would stay. Its Chase Club was one of the top nightclubs in the nation where greats like Frank Sinatra
and Nat King Cole would regularly perform. In time, the hottest ticket in town was not for their shows, but instead it was for wrestling under the spectacular chandeliers of the Khorassan Room. Wrestlers were used to dark, dank arenas but now were here in a place most people only wished they could be. Joe Garagiola, the program’s first announcer, commented on how his family would drive by the hotel in awe of its magnificence, dreaming of one day getting to go in.” Also part of the story of Wrestling at the Chase is the history of the evolution of television in St. Louis. Harold Koplar, owner of the Chase, had been looking for exciting new programming for his new TV station, KPLR. He happened to be on an airplane flight with Sam Muchnick who was looking to expand wrestling in a new way, and thus formed the marriage of Sam's wrestlers and Harold's hotel and television station that would span three decades. “Back in that day, you had a single television set in the home, with three channels to watch; people didn’t have all the entertainment CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . That’s why there are such great memories of the program gathered with the whole family watching this entertainment together on Saturday nights or the re-airings on Sunday mornings. Too often brothers would try to emulate a move made by Dick the Bruiser or Cowboy Bob Ellis and a lamp or coffee table would take the hit,” adds Ed. But, as Ed points out in the his book, what's most important is that Wrestling at the Chase became "the great equalizer." “In our nation’s history, this was a time of civil and racial unrest. However, Wrestling at the Chase was all about equality and entertainment. Blacks and Whites would be sitting next to each other cheering together, not worrying about protesters or anything outside the Chase,” says Ed. Like his other books on St. Louis sports history, Ed says this book is about reliving great memories of a prominent, proud town so they're not forgotten.
