Love, Peace & Happiness at Home Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. Rockwood School Board Selects New Superintendent

Clementine's Creamery Donates Funds To DOORWAYS Interfaith Nonprofit

Dr. Curtis Cain will be Rockwood School District’s new superintendent beginning July 1, 2022. He replaces Dr. Timothy Ricker, who has been serving as interim superintendent since July following the retirement of Dr. Mark Miles. He was chosen from among candidates identified through a national search conducted by School Exec Connect, a consultant firm in Oak Park, Illinois. He has been the superintendent of the Wentzville School District, where he has worked since 2013.

Clementine's Creamery donated $12,498 to DOORWAYS Housing, a group who supports those living with HIV/AIDS in the St. Louis region. The donation resulted from the company's recent Peppermint Andy fundraiser with Andy Cohen. Pictured are Opal Jones, CEO of DOORWAYS and Tamara Keefe, owner of Clementine's Creamery. DOORWAYS staffers indicate they are the only organization in St. Louis whose sole mission is to provide affordable, secure housing and related services for people living with HIV/AIDS.

SLSO Names New VP/ Chief Philanthropy Officer St. Louis Symphony Orchestra appointed Julie Gibbs as vice president/chief philanthropy officer. She succeeds John Easley, who served in the position on an interim basis since October 2021. A St. Louis native and graduate of Parkway Central High School and the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Julie rejoins SLSO after previously serving in marketing and development from 1988 to 1998. Most recently, she was development vice president at Jewish Federation of St. Louis.

St. Louis offers gorgeous spring weather, and as everyone crawls out of the cold hibernation phase, most look forward to receiving extra doses of vitamin C with more time outside. Spring months are typically about revamping the outdoor experience of homes. That's why Rachel Newton, Heartlands Building Company marketing representative, is so eager to discuss how to enhance all outdoor living spaces. Rachel says Heartlands is a completely custom building company specializing in screen rooms, outdoor additions, pool houses, decks and even renovations, home flips and complete custom homes. "Nothing we do is cookie cutter or prefabricated. It’s all dreamed up based on clients' unique preferences, all with the focus of building a space that will last for years," she adds.

Regarding 2022 trends for outdoor living, Rachel has great ideas to share: • While outdoor fireplaces have been popular for a while now due to offering the chance to enjoy chilly nights outside, she says Heartlands has been dreaming up grandiose ideas lately with even bigger spaces to lounge by the pool and the fireplace -- with room for large dining sets so the space can be used in many ways. • Retractable screens are often installed for complete opening or closing based on the weather, which is perfect for the Midwest’s nature mood swings. • The addition of screens creates a steady flow between open and closed space, going hand-inhand with Heartland’s screen room systems. “I always look forward to the satisfaction of seeing my client’s reactions to their new additions. We take their dreams, find how it will flow best with their home, and then make it a reality," says Heartland’s owner Adam Twellman.

Rachel also emphasizes how unique it is for the company to have its own concrete division. "You can trust that your project is all handled with care when it comes to the foundations, piers and patio space," she adds. Her favorite finishing touch on a project, she says, is adding a custom stamp design to poured concrete slab, creating a luxurious look. Swim spas and hot tubs have been at a peak of interests since COVID-19, with people investing in their family time and bonding, says Paul, by turning off cellphones, computers and TVs. He’s quick to add that spas and tubs provide health benefits, such as better sleep, better circulation and less aches and pains. Hydrotherapy is playing a major role in the decision of which model customers choose, adds Paul. Multifaceted fitness aspects, including stationary resistance swim, rowing bars, resistance bands, step aerobics and water weight exercises, are popular. Alan says they excavate 4 inches of dirt and then create a customized, permeable rock/ sand drainage layer, similar to how French drains work. With the environmentally friendly synthetic turf then placed over the area, he says 2 or 3 inches of snow melts visibly quicker than if it were left on the ground. "Also, in a 2-inch downpour of rain, our turf typically dries within an hour," he adds. Popular dog behaviorist Cesar Millan endorses artificial grass, Alan notes, even having it installed at his dog psychology center. Cesar is widely known for his television series Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, which was broadcast in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Alan says the company started in 1997 by constructing state-of-the-art artificial putting turfs. "We now build safer, more durable playgrounds for parks and children daycares, pet turf at homes, doggie daycare facilities and dog parks for apartment complexes. And we install top-ofthe-line turf for indoor sports facilities. Anything you want to do with artificial turf, we can do," he proudly states. They even construct turf areas on roof tops. More specifically, Xtreme teams take care of batting cages, athletic training applications, driving ranges, putting greens, hitting mats, playgrounds and other recreational areas. "We also provide traction areas around swimming pools and hot tubs," says Alan. During the pandemic period with more homeowners updating their amenities, Alan says they constructed a significant number of synthetic turf bocce ball courts and putting greens. Some customers indicate online that they turn to turf for economic reasons. "Replacing natural grass with artificial grass can reduce your water usage by more than 80% each year, and you'll also save on energy bills," says Alan. New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach

is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.
