LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Local.

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Gordon Montgomery gordon.montgomery@citylifestyle.com Kelley Lamm | kelley.lamm@citylifestyle.com

February is “the month of love” – a time for Valentine's Day and remembering all those we love. It’s also a good time to show support to those who enhance and/or serve our community in some way…thus, our theme of LOVE LOCAL. Whether it’s participating in events, such as a Blues hockey game, cookie decorating with your kids at a local bakery, enjoying a special road trip or getting fit, we hope you share your passions with those you love, and support theirs! Psychologists tell us dating is vital to a relationship. So, we’re helping you out with a few ideas for Date Night in Local Experiences. You also can find fun things to do in the area in our City Scene feature and our Events page. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it’s easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps a favorite sports game) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us on Facebook. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to shop local, support our local makers and artists right here in our community. Much love to our advertisers for your partnership that supports our community. We hope that you will support these local businesses! We would like to thank our City Lifestyle Team, loyal advertising partners for their continued support in 2022, as well as welcome some new advertising partners who are joining us this new year! We appreciate you and all you do to help build our community. As always we are inspired by you. Love and respect,

St. Louis Blues Hockey Head Coach First in Fan Line Among Bluenatics and the Arch City

“I absolutely love the whole process of being a head coach and part of a team,” divulges St. Louis Blues ice hockey coach Craig Berube, who’s enthusiastically embraced the hockey lifestyle his entire life. Craig, whose father played hockey until he was 81 years old and whose uncles coached him, says it’s “just what we all do.” The retired Canadian professional winger played in 1,054 games between 1983-2004, scoring 61 goals and 98 assists, with the following teams: Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.

“Being in that locker-room is where so much happens, everything really, where decisions are made. It’s where we instill that motivating, ‘don’t be satisfied’ philosophy,” says Craig. As an emergency fill-in Blues coach in 2018, the Alberta native reassembled a bottom-of-theleague St. Louis team, directed a Gloria-winning streak and famously led them to their ‘Cinderella’ Stanley Cup victory. Since then, Craig served as the Blues head coach. Craig’s equal love in his life is new bride, Dominique Pino. She’s a native of Italy and a great cook, he says. When he’s not in St. Louis, they anchor their family in the Philadelphia area. He’s a huge (Baltimore) Ravens football fan, and before that, he enjoyed watching the style in which the (San Francisco) 49ers, led by quarterback Joe Montana, played the game. He says the Blues’ players are “the best to be around,” because they practice comradery every day. During games, he adds that their style is to dominate puck possession time by controlling and attacking together.

Cra ig ’s Ot her L ove s Be side s Hockey: Craig’s Other Loves Besides Hockey: • Paul Manno’s in Chesterfield. “I’ve tried them all. I love this restaurant. Steaks are my favorite meal.” • Daytrips with his family. • Golfing in summer. “My buddies and I play competitively and for fun.” • His preferred pizza style? Thin. “Peno (Peno Soul Food) makes a great pizza.” • Music from the late 1960s to 1970s, ranging from Bob Dylan and Neal Young to The Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. “I’ve loved music since I was a kid. I’m not necessarily a country music lover, but I like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.”

• Fly fishing. “I went fly fishing in Vail for the first time in 2021, and discovered I really liked the relaxation it brings.” • Working out. “I was a tough kid who had to be doing something all the time. I just look forward to working out, and get antsy if I can’t do that.” • Custom suits from Bespoke Apparel in Clayton, especially for NHL games. As a fashion designer, his wife makes his ties, but for suits, he “only goes to David (Corbitt).” • Ease of mobility. “It’s easy to get around in St. Louis, from little pockets of Clayton, Chesterfield and Frontenac. It’s a great, smaller town. The people make St. Louis.” “St. Louis is a wonderful sports team city. People here are more passionate. The Blues fans support their team, no matter what. People still thank me for the Cup,” he adds.

During presstime, Head Coach Craig became just the seventh coach in National Hockey League history to win 200 games behind the bench AND play in at least 1,000 NHL games!

“In life, it’s not where you go. It’s who you travel with.” - Charles Schulz

Those seeking unique Valentine's Day gifts may want to consider purchasing tickets to an upcoming event, Unleash The Beast. For the 24th time in league history, the PBR's (Professional Bull Riders) elite will hold the St. Louis Invitational on Feb. 18-19 at Enterprise Center, with the Top 30 bull riders in the world competing. PBR is the world’s premier bull riding organization. More than 500 bull riders compete in 200-plus events annually across the televised PBR Unleash The Beast tour, which features the top 35 bull riders in the world; the PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour; the PBR Touring Pro Division; and the PBR’s international circuits in Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. When PBR last traveled to the Gateway City in 2020, Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) won his third premier series event of the year, extending his lead atop the world rankings. Historically, more than half (12 of 23) of the PBR’s past events in St. Louis have been won by World Champions. Prior to Jose's win in 2020, 2018 PBR World Champion Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) was the last rider to accomplish the feat, victorious in both 2017 and 2015. Past World Champion event winners in St. Louis includes: three-time PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes (1997, 1998, 2004), two-time PBR World Champion Chris Shivers (2000, 2001), two-time PBR World Champion Justin McBride (2003, 2005), 2010 PBR World Champion Renato Nunes (2008), and 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi (2011). creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear, customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning, in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, Kansas, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all-around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.”

Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all-time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every 19 days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all-time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C H E ST E R F I E L D

“It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3%. It’s a guaranteed 100% rate of return, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max, do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Mallouk says to start with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. A trust tends to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your

40

just at the starting line.”

best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
