LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy & Well It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and maybe even a new look. With how busy life becomes, it's a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and what we want to do now. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier, creating change and spending more time with the things we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, go for it! Our January issue is dedicated to you and all that is ahead to feel happy. Being happy creates wellness and our hope for you in this New Year is to be happy and well. Here's to a New Year and we hope you enjoy the new name and the new look!

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU REJUVENATING PLASTIC SURGEON BELIEVES PEOPLE FEEL THEIR BEST WHEN THEY LOOK THEIR BEST
New year beginnings and optimism work hand-in-hand to foster self-renewal. "It's amazing what facial rejuvenation, whether surgical or nonsurgical, can do for one's spirit, energy and sense of freedom," assures plastic surgeon Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D., of St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery. Looking into the mirror and seeing a bright face that looks fresh and rested can give a sense of well-being and simply feeling good, she says. "If starting the new year feeling good means getting a little filler under your eyes to brighten things up, or a little Botox to smooth your forehead, or a facelift to rejuvenate your whole look, why not? I think we all deserve to look in the mirror and feel happy with what we see, whatever that may mean for each of us." To determine if one is a good candidate for cosmetic procedures, Dr. Sarhaddi recommends first being evaluated by a conscientious, board-certified plastic surgeon "There are so many things I personally take into account when I evaluate a patient for a surgical or nonsurgical procedure to give them the most beautiful and safe result possible," she says, reminding that it's best for patients to focus on the results wanted rather than the procedure desired so she can combine her judgment, expertise and training to offer the most appropriate treatment.

Enthusiasm defines Dr. Sarhaddi’s approach to being a plastic surgeon. She joined St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery after completing an Aesthetic Societyendorsed aesthetic surgery fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she trained with leading experts in cosmetic surgery procedures and advanced nonsurgical techniques. Her interest in aesthetic surgery started with her training in oculoplastics and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, then blossomed to encompass full facial rejuvenation. "In my opinion, facial aesthetics demands a level of finesse and orientation to detail that I find challenging, fulfilling and frankly, fun. I love working at the millimeter level, and focusing my eyes on shadows and highlights and learning how huge of an impact a tiny, well-performed change can achieve," she confides. "To be able to change a person's face, but still keep them looking natural and like themselves, is what I think the work is all about." Dr. Sarhaddi also contributes to the world of academic plastic surgery by writing textbook chapters and manuscripts, and serving as a peer reviewer for the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. Why do people typically want to change aspects of their bodies?

Dr. Sarhaddi says she believes it's an incredibly personal decision to make a physical change. "Often, though, I find that patients want to look in the mirror and see that the outside reflects how they feel on the inside -whether that's looking less tired or aged than they feel, or wanting their body to reflect the amount of work they've been putting into their health, or wanting to feel more comfortable in clothes that they like." The emotional readiness to make that change is another aspect entirely, she adds. "A surgical change comes with recovery, a period of time that can last months, when patients need support and reassurance that they will heal and do well. That's the most challenging time for patients, the time between surgery and that perfect postoperative photo you see online," she says. "I'm proud that between myself and my staff, we not only provide that support when the time comes, but we have frank discussions preoperatively about what to expect, not just physically, but emotionally as well," she explains. She says the journey from the first visit to her office to the point when the patient is fully recovered and photo-ready is why she's involved with this particular medical field. "It's incredibly fulfilling to be asked to take part in what is a very personal journey for my patients." During 2022, Dr. Sarhaddi says she hopes to hone in on new ways of combining surgical and nonsurgical interventions for a facial optimization approach to rejuvenation for patients. She adds that a youthful, fresh appearance really starts with skin tone, brightness and quality. “I believe that when people look their best, they feel their best. Someone who thinks they look tired, angry, old, or unattractive often lets those feelings affect their interaction with the world,” she says. “I love the impact a few (or a lot!) of perfectly changed millimeters and effectively placed highlights on the face can have on a patient’s sense of well-being.” 17300 N. ST. LOUIS YOUNG DANCER BECOMES AMBASSADOR WHO SHARES MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES WITH FAMILIES AFFECTED BY GUN VIOLENCE
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MINDEE MALLOY PHOTOGRAPHY
Just Strong

I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + CULTURE
As a new brand ambassador for Just Strong Clothing, 9-year-old St. Louis County resident Presley Schellert is helping families with children who've been victims of gun violence and its traumatic aftermath find resources for mental health and trauma therapy. Presley knows all too well what deepseated trauma can cause. “Last April, our family was caught up in a mall shooting. For the 25 terrifying minutes it took to make our way to our car, in the dark, with other sobbing and terrified families, we didn’t know how many shooters there were and where they were," says Kelly Schellert, founding partner and creative director of Ethos Design Collective and Ceanii Artful Interiors. "Presley’s night terrors soon turned into affecting her physically and making her ill." As a competition dancer for Motion Express School of Dance & Acrobatics in Sappington, Kelly says Presley had a panic episode just hours before she had to perform first for the day at a national competition. "With barely a few hours of sleep, she still performed that number, plus the large group number. Both performances went on to win first place overall national championships for their age group. Her third number, a Broadway trio, won third place overall at nationals." "Dance is Presley's happy place, and the whole crew and Dance Force families at Motion Express rallied around her to provide an excellent and consistent source of joy over the summer. As her parents, we applaud her tenacity and spirit and facing down the
challenges to put it all aside," she adds. Along the way, Presley learned to embrace the philosophy of being strong in both body and mind -- an approach that meshes completely with the platform of Just Strong Clothing, a global lifestyle brand for strong women. Now, Presley helps others restore mental strength through healing art therapy and finding counseling services that are low to no cost. Art therapy helps children explore their emotions, improve self-esteem, relieve stress, and ease anxiety and depression. True to her mission, Presley attends virtual counseling each week, and says art is one of the healing tools that she really loves. Counselors that incorporate this type of therapy may encourage youths to create emotional wheels, make puppets, develop stress paintings, mold a sculpture or assemble a journal. "If you're a family in need of child trauma therapy, reach out to The National Child Traumatic Stress Network for all kinds of resources to cope. If you’d like to help share the positive message of strong in mind, strong in body, grab your own T-shirt @juststrong and add Presley’s code KELSCH10 for your own discount," says Kelly. The NCTSN is funded by the Center for Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is jointly coordinated by UCLA and Duke University. GOOD DESIGN EQUALS ART OF COMPOSITION, HARMONY AND STYLE

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MARCIA MOORE DESIGN

F E AT U R E | HOM E + D ESIGN
Intelligent, luxury design with tailor-made, signature style is the mantra of Clayton-based Marcia Moore Design. That style includes a special layer of considerations when it comes to supporting health and wellness. The firm's owner and creative director, Marcia Moore, says she and her team weave in wonderful design details for clients focused on the myriad of ways environments affect them psychologically. "Since COVID, interior design has become even more personal and connected to our health and wellness. We've gone from homes that we were used to being in for only a few hours a day, along with sleeping, to realizing that those homes, spaces or certain rooms need significant upgrades to meet our needs," Marcia explains. No matter what clients desire psychologically from their residences, Marcia says they design spaces that are calming or vibrant to help people with feeling safe, secure, less stressed, creative, peaceful or motivated. "What one person needs is different than the next. People generally can describe what they're hoping for in nebulous terms, or they realize that their furniture isn't comfortable or functional, and that's where we as designers can certainly provide seamless solutions," she adds. Marcia confirms a combination of properties should be used to create inviting, healthy rooms: • Design principles -- balance, unity, variety, emphasis, movement, patterns, proportions. • Design elements -- colors, shapes, forms, values, textures, space, lines. • First impressions for guests come from exterior front entries and interior foyers. Ask what your entry says about you. • How spaces are lit is very important for overall ambience. The best lighting source is the sun, so window size and placement are critical. Lighting can either boost one’s happiness or increase sadness and anxiety. Daylight is one of the most important factors in human performance. • Size and spaciousness of rooms inf luences an occupant’s mood. Ceiling height impacts an individual’s notion of freedom or conf inement and the subconscious perception of space and environment. People are more creative and focused in rooms with higher ceilings. • Rich textures, colors and patterns yield variety in design. How furniture is arranged promotes positive or negative energy. Soft textures, such as shag rugs or velvet pillows, evoke comfort and happiness; metal elements promote strength and independence. Mixing materials is critical to the vibrancy of rooms.

27
• Biophilic designs that connect with nature are instrumental to one’s physical and mental health, fitness and well-being. This includes natural light, natural ventilation, natural materials, vegetation, exterior views, environmental shapes and forms. Environmentally impoverished habitats foster fatigue, symptoms of disease and impaired performance. Large commercial office buildings with few windows, fluorescent lighting, cold metal, and concrete are indicative of this and there's even a name for it: sick building syndrome. • For our physical health, we no longer have lead or other harmful chemicals in paint. We intentionally can purchase environmentally friendly fabrics, carpets and vinyl. Some countertops come with antimicrobial properties. Smart technology now also includes healthy technology, air quality monitoring – the list of improvements is endless. Years ago, Marcia says interior designers were the ones who started discussions about the psychology of design in how it affects humans physically and emotionally. "Scientific tests eventually corroborated what we knew all along. One of the easiest ways to positively affect your mood is to declutter. Our brains function better in a functional, structured environment, which
28
F E AT U R E | HOM E + D ESIGN
promotes stability and calm. Decluttering helps us move away from the past and live in the present." She says her firm definitely is getting more requests for spaces that promote wellness, including workout rooms, wellness rooms, saunas, meditation spaces, massage areas and hot tubs. All design elements can evoke positive or negative emotional responses. Color is the easiest to understand, so Marcia suggests starting there. "Different colors evoke different responses. What's your favorite color and which one do you hate? Vibrant shades, such as yellow, orange and green, encourage socializing and communicating, while dark hues, such as purple, deep blue, red and darker shades of green, can feel gloomy. But when applied in appropriate places, they evoke a sense of comfort. Warmer shades of yellow and orange inspire relaxation and boost creativity. Icy blue and green, evoke a sense of calm," she says. "The notion that home is a happy place is only true if that environment fosters happiness. Homes aren't happy per se, but can be molded and designed to promote good moods and health. This is the ultimate goal of an interior designer who focuses on health and wellness, not just pretty rooms," concludes Marcia. 314.395.1114 MarciaMooreDesign.com

NEW YEAR FASHION AUDIT TIPS FOR OPTIMIZING YOUR WARDROBE ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY POWERS
It’s a new year, and we’re all feeling refreshed! The cold winter months are the perfect time to audit wardrobes, combing through what’s in, what’s out, and evaluating what to keep. This can be a tough task, and requires honesty as well as creativity.
Following are tips and tricks for a new year closet overhaul. I’m all about simplicity, minimalism and efficiency when it comes to my wardrobe, but make sure you are true to yourself when you’re conducting your own purge. Keep what you really love!
PUT YOUR CLOTHES TO THE TEST Not sure if you should keep a piece or not? Put it through a test! Flip all of your hangers backward on your rack, and when a piece is worn, flip the hanger forward. In a few months, it’s time to get rid of the clothes on your backwards hangers -- you honestly know you don't wear them.
keep it "There are a few trends that will stick around, so as you clean out your closet make sure you hang onto them! Oversized blazers are so chic and pair well with dresses, dress pants or tossed on over your

favorite hoodie and jeans. Keep your sequins, too. These tops, pants or dresses are sure to be in style well into 2022.” - Abby
Feeling guilty for buying a high dollar piece that you never wore? Maybe it even still has tags attached. Download the Poshmark app, or try selling the piece on Facebook Marketplace or within your own circle of friends through Instagram or Facebook. It will get more use in a new home, and you’ll get some money back for it -- win, win!
BUY NICE OR BUY T WICE I'm all about quality. When it comes to fashion, I keep my event-specific or one-time-wear pieces to a minimum. Investing in high-quality, sustainable and long-lasting pieces is good for the environment and makes your audits even easier.

and set you apart. My vintage closet staples are an oversized vintage blazer and Levi’s.” -Mary Powers, local vintage shop owner
Concert tees, sweaters that were gifted to us, a treasured clutch bought on vacation…we all have these pieces that we just can’t seem to part with. Pack these items up with other keepsake items and store them away from your everyday clothing. This way, they’re in safe keeping without cluttering your closet.

CHESTERFIELD MAYOR BOB NATION wants to start off the new year by saluting the Chesterfield Amphitheater team, given that the venue was named among the top 50 in the nation in ticket sales by Pollstar magazine. "It was super to see the comeback at the theater after skipping the 2020 season," he confides. On a serious note, Chesterfield city council members voted to put Proposition U, commonly referred to as a "use tax" proposal, on the April 5, 2022, municipal ballot. The ballot proposal -- also called the Wayfair bill -- closes a loophole that arose in 1967, which allowed out-of-state vendors to avoid collecting sales tax. Chesterfield City Administrator Mike Geisel estimates the city loses $3 million to $4 million annually in local sales tax revenue by not collecting that tax.

Mayor Nation says the parameters of this particular tax easily are confusing, and that it's important to understand the background on the matter. On June 30, 2021, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed into law the Wayfair bill (Senate Bill 153), which allows municipalities to collect a use tax from online retailers that sell and deliver more than $100,000 in tangible goods in Missouri. The mayor says Missouri was the last state in the nation to close the sales tax loophole. However, to enact the tax, Proposition U must be approved by Chesterfield voters. "As more purchasers have participated in online shopping, this has had a significant impact on municipal
revenues, which affects our ability to provide a high level of city services to residents and businesses. If this measure passes, it will tend to level the playing field for our local, brick-and-mortar establishments, as well as restore revenues that previously existed before online shopping became so prevalent," explains the mayor. The ballot language is set by state officials and will read: “Shall the city of Chesterfield impose a local use tax at the same rate as the total local sales tax rate, provided that if the local sales tax rate is reduced or raised by voter approval, the local use tax rate shall also be reduced or raised by the same action?” Mike emphasizes this is not a new tax, and simply restores the tax collecting ability that was allowed in 1967 when the Supreme Court enabled out-of-state catalog vendors to avoid collecting sales taxes unless sellers had physical presences in the state. The ruling created a loophole for online retailers that didn’t exist before, he adds. In 2018, the Supreme Court reversed the decision, which provided the opportunity to recover the sales tax. Passage of the “Use Tax/Proposition U” proposal is supported by both the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Retailers Association, Mike says. If approved, the out-of-state use tax collections would go into effect in January 2023. bnation@chesterfield.mo.us 636.537.4711

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 38
T R E N D SE T T E R | FITNESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
