Holiday Cheer It’s in the air…the spirit of the holiday season! As we reflect on, and often try to replicate, what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth, it may bring up images of new puppies, special annual traditions and gatherings. The goal for many of us often is to mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it’s the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This issue highlights the magic of the season and some of what our area has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We also share some tips for successful, festive holiday entertaining. We’ve even gathered a few designs from our expert interior designers to get the look as well as some local experiences to enjoy the holiday. So, whether your holiday plans include curling up by the fire with a good book (we feature two for your consideration), buying a first-of-its-kind super sports car (page 40) attending a holiday stage production or some other fun area event, we hope your days are merry and bright. But while this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have lost a loved one or are in financial need. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. The 3rd Annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. New Indoor Slide Park Launches In Chesterfield Slick City Action Park is a new, all-ages indoor action park and party venue with slides, air courts, basketball court, a climbing area for kids and an arcade. The park at 17379 Edison Avenue is reportedly the first indoor slide park without any water. Patrons ride on mats down slides of all sizes. At press time, the park was slated to open in November. Festive Inspiration PERSONAL TIPS: ADDING SPECIAL TOUCHES TO CELEBRATIONS

Holiday party invites are coming in hot! There are so many aspects to creating a magical atmosphere at a holiday celebration, and I’m sharing some of my creative ways to make parties the peak of the season. Whether attending or hosting, these ideas will take parties from typical to all-the-talk.

Set A Dress Code Ditch the ugly sweaters and switch it up. Coordinating outfits is a fun way to create excitement right when the party kicks off, and ugly sweaters have had their moment. If you’re going for comfy and cozy, invite guests to wear their holiday pajamas for a laid-back, casual evening sipping cocktails. If you’re going for fancy, suggest that guests get glitzy and don their favorite sparkly attire. Bonus: This makes the pictures oh-so-cute!

Snack Spot Whether hosting or bringing a dish to share, the snack table is the mecca of every party. Aside from the usual charcuterie, veggie trays, snack mix and dips, there’s one favorite that always pleases a crowd and avoids common allergies. S’mores dip is a comfort food everyone loves. Simply spray a baking dish, cover the bottom in chocolate chips, layer on marshmallows and heat it in the oven until golden brown. Provide with graham crackers for dipping. Yum!

Deck Out The Drinks Cocktails (and mocktails!) are all the talk during a holiday gathering. I like making mine extra festive with beautiful seasonal garnishes, such as rosemary sprigs, dried orange slices, frozen cranberries or cinnamon sticks. For dessert cocktails, try peppermint sticks, a skewer of mini marshmallows or even a gingerbread man. If you’re feeling the holiday stress, create a grinch cocktail by stirring up anything green and having red hearts, with strawberries as the garnish. Don’t forget to stay inclusive of those who forego alcohol by offering non-alcoholic options that are just as fun; this gesture goes a long way.

Give Back Aside from sharing conversation and libations, giving back as part of a party is a wonderful way to spread holiday cheer. Creating a card-making station for guests to decorate, or sign cards for veterans, local nursing homes, or those in need is a feel-good activity that will leave everyone smiling. If you’re not feeling crafty, simply ask guests to bring a food pantry donation or a toy to donate to a local drive. Create a pile for everyone to see how much of an impact they made together as a group. ‘Tis the reason for the season!

Treat The Host If you are a guest, it’s always sweet to pass the host a treat for the hospitality. Rather than a tangible gift, such as a candle or a bottle of bubbly, a service can go a long way. Treat the friend or family member to a trip to the spa or even a post-party home cleaning.

Cozying up homes, especially this time of year, delivers a special level of comfort. Whether a house, apartment or townhouse, an ambiance of hospitality can be created. Warm-toned furnishings and lighting can make immediate differences. Winter often provokes nostalgic feelings of family gatherings, anticipated festivities and home-style cooking. Bring back the familiar by also adding a few traditional style elements, such as holiday-scented candles, embroidered accent pillows, a cushy rocking chair, heirloom books or a plaid blanket, for example. Get inspired by these “looks” to create perfectly chic and personally welcoming spaces!

Jeanne Lashmett, owner of JML Interior Design, enjoys creating calming, serene gathering spaces that allow people to relax and focus on each other. “We often apply customized, casual touches of elegance, along with watercolor-like, softer color palettes in such rooms,” she says. In the room featured here, her goal was to open it up, making it feel bright and airy. Heavy formal window treatments were removed, being replaced by luxurious white plantation shutters. The more serious furniture was replaced with a much more casual style. The incorporation of taller plants and softer-colored finishes allowed an outdoors-brought-in feeling to be developed. “I can easily see this room being in a cozy coastal setting, on a tranquil beach,” asserts Jeanne. 314.435.4233 | JMLInteriors.net

Knapp, ASID, owner and principal interior designer of Yours By Design, designed a room spotlighted here that’s appealing to all ages, by offering slivers of fun, tranquility or entertainment in every nook and cranny. “We design for the way people really live so they feel at home in their own homes, and for when others are joining them there,” C.J. promises. Kathleen Matthews, interior designer with Marcia Moore Design, enjoys gathering spaces with tremendous views. She says the urban loft accentuated here is the perfect combination of sleek and comfortable, thanks to inviting seating and plenty of lighting. “We love the combination of modern and transitional pieces, and the gold tones warm up the space,” she adds. Framed ball gloves on the wall offer a creative alternative to traditional art, and the pops of red create the perfect amount of bold visual interest. RETURNING TO MOVIE PALACE ERA The Fabulous Fox Celebrates 40 Years Since Associates Restored Theatre To Its 1929 Splendor

Forty years ago, a St. Louis “movie palace” reopened its beautiful brass doors to a new era. The Fabulous Fox supporters are celebrating its 2022-2023 season for its successes in the last four decades, as the theatre went from barely keeping those doors open for showings of Kung Fu movies, to sold-out performances of the nation’s top Broadway shows. Hailed as one of the pioneers of the motion-picture and entertainment industry, the son of Hungarian immigrants, William Fox, built a multimillion-dollar empire in the early part of the 20th century, which included the Fox Theatre, Fox Film Corporation and Fox West Coast Theatres chain. His memory lives on as the namesake of the Fox Television Network and the 20th CenturyFox studios. William dropped out of school when he was 11 years old, selling penny candy to support his family, before purchasing a nickelodeon in Brooklyn in 1904. He later developed Theda Bara into the first screen vamp and movie star, founded “Movietone News” — the first commercially successful sound film — and pioneered the vertical integration of the film industry. C. Howard Crane, a leading movie palace architect of the period, designed the original Fox Theatre in St. Louis in a style known as “Siamese Byzantine” — a conglomeration of Moorish, far Eastern, Egyptian, Babylonian and Indian themes of various periods. The original Fox Theatre opened on Jan. 31, 1929, with a showing of Street Angel. The $5 million movie palace decorated in plaster finishes, hand stenciled walls, marble bathroom fixtures, leather-lined elevators and velvet throne chairs, was billed as “St. Louis’ largest and most magnificent temple of amusement,” and anchored the city’s entertainment district along North Grand Boulevard. According to a statement from the Fox: “For 50 cents, a person could experience splendor and enchantment of regal edifice, complete with live entertainment, music from two organs, Fox Movietone News, and of course, the ‘talkie.’” CONTINUED >

Perhaps the cofounder of Metro-GoldwynMayer Studios, Marcus Loew, said it best regarding the elaborate nature of the Fox and other movie palaces of the era: “We don’t sell tickets to movies; we sell tickets to theaters.” But time passed, and city-dwellers became suburbanites, commercial real estate prices rose and Americans bought televisions. Movieplexes and widescreens came on the scene, as did dollar shows, VHS and cable. And they all contributed to

the slow demise of the movie palace era. The Fox showed its last movie in March of 1978. Still, as they always do, times change, and the Fabulous Fox endured. A retired senior project engineer, Carl Vogt has worked at the Fabulous Fox since its reopening 40 years ago. Today, he is a tour guide and a host in the Fox Club Luxury Box. Carl says the Fox lobby is indeed grand. “It’s 60 feet floor to ceiling. It’s 50 feet between pillars and 90 feet long. The Fox was made to impress.”

TO DATE, MORE THAN 20 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE PASSED THROUGH THE FOX’S BRASS DOORS TO SEE SOME 10,000 PERFORMANCES SINCE THE THEATRE’S REOPENING.

The 40th celebration began earlier this year with Saturday walking tours of the five-story theatre. A Christmas Carol, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and ELF The Musical are featured in December. The 2023 schedule includes classics such as Les Miserables, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Wicked. For nearly 50 years, the Fox delighted millions with its awe-inspiring architecture, drawing guests in to see the top films, stage shows, concerts, radio shows, special events and world premieres. But with the expense of converting 1,100 theatres to sound equipment and the economic crisis of the 1930s, William declared bankruptcy. He served a term in prison for obstructing justice in 1942. In 1934, producers Fanchon and Marco took a 25-year lease on the building, and Harry Arthur became the general manager of the Fox. Over the years, the Arthurs gained a controlling interest and kept the Fox in business, though they resorted to Kung Fu movies and rock concerts to do so until 1978. Three years later, banding together as Fox Associates, Leon Strauss, Robert Baudendistel, Dennis McDaniel and Harvey Harris purchased the Fox from the Arthur family. And Mary Strauss led the group on a $2 million restoration project to bring the splendor of the 1929 movie palace back to life.

Some 7,300 yards of elephant carpet were woven to duplicate the original pattern from 1929. All 4,500 seats were removed, renovated and re-installed. Missing art glass was reproduced, and the 2,000-pound auditorium chandelier was cleaned and relamped. The stage and backstage areas were updated and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems were installed. The Fabulous Fox reopened its doors as a performing arts center with the musical Barnum on Sept. 7, 1982, to a capacity crowd of 4,500 and a standing ovation. In 1995, the Fox completed a $2 million stage expansion, increasing its depth to 50 feet. The lobby ceiling mural was renovated in 2000, the massive faux-marble columns repainted and the theatre recarpeted. A replica of the 1929 Fox vertical blade sign was added to the front of the building in 2008. And in 2013, the auditorium ceiling was restored. The Fox celebrated the opening of the Fox Club in 1988; the addition of a video marquee in 2005; the opening of the Curtain Call Lounge in 2015; and the dedication of a 600-car parking garage in 2017. To date, more than 20 million people have passed through The Fox's brass doors to see some 10,000 performances since the theatre’s reopening. FabulousFox.com

Life, St yle A nd Painted Bubbly St. Louis County Entrepreneur Adds Hand-Painted Champagne Bottles To Other’s Big Moments

By day, Madison Herweck is a postpartum registered nurse who relishes caring for mothers and babies. By night, she's an innovative artiste who creates her own style of personalized scroll painting on beverage bottles. StyledBubbly (intentionally one word) started when Madison decided she wanted to make her graduation from the University of Missouri Columbia, and the associated photos, a bit more special for herself and her roommates. So, over winter break during December 2021, this Kirkwood native says she began experimenting with hand-painting champagne bottles. "It was the perfect graduation gift. Then I expanded my services and created bottles for all sorts of occasions," she adds. Painting bottles has become a lovely part of her pursuit of infusing passion into her own life, as well. "I love to keep things bright," she says. Madison specializes in fully custom orders, for every life event, including birthdays, graduations, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, new bundles of joy and other momentous accomplishments. She believes, "There’s always a reason to pop the bubbly." She says she typically suggests La Marca Prosecco and Veuve champagne bottles, but she's worked with just about the whole bar cart, including bourbon, tequila and wine bottles. "I've painted on all sorts of shapes and sizes of beverages and glass products." After clients opt for which beverage bottle, together Madison determines color schemes, design and personalization. "I love adding all sorts of custom flares. My artistic style is perfectly imperfect, I love watercolor artwork and plenty of shading and dimension on my bottles," she explains. Madison says she's planning to release limited-edition New Year's painted bottles that are black, white and gold, with fireworks and 2023 personalization.
