During this season of giving thanks, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the many blessings in our lives. We were so excited and blessed to experience a Kansas City Chiefs Football game front row at Arrowhead Stadium recently. What an experience it was to be a part of such a huge crowd and witness the enthusiasm firsthand. It is so enlightening to try something new, whether it is gathering at a tailgate, in front of a warm campfire or around a table with friends and family it is a time to be thankful and refresh the spirit on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving involves the conscious expression of gratitude, spending time with those we love, and “giving back” in meaningful ways. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. One great example of that is the STL Blues Better Halves. You can be a part of their fundraising efforts at Sip, Shop & Show on Dec. 7 (page 36). We are thankful for all the people who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are thankful for our readers, and especially for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE

I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries or evergreen branches with pine cones to fill vases. Add a battery-operated strand of lights and you’re looking just like a designer home magazine spread.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

If items aren’t working together, don’t be afraid to get crafty. Painting pumpkins with spray paint or tying some neutral ribbons around existing vases is an easy and affordable way to make them fit a specific aesthetic.

Isabella Brouster knows all about making the best of every opportunity. A 2021 University of Missouri-Columbia psychology graduate, Isabella says she had planned to obtain her master’s degree in school counseling, driven by wanting to help people. As it turns out, the self-taught artist chased her dream, ran with opportunity, and now gets to do just that, but with her art rather than her counsel. “I decided to follow my passion,” Isabella says. “One of my first memories was trying to sell pencil drawings of my favorite characters from children’s books in grade school. I was trying to make them come to life. I would draw me in their worlds.” While Isabella did take an art class in high school—in fact, she credits her high school art teacher, Christine Sarra, for igniting her love of painting—she never studied art in college, because she “disagreed with people being graded on their artwork.” Instead of art, Isabella studied the human mind. And the payoff has been that she gets to use both psychology and art in her work now. “A lot of what I do now has a healing effect. When I paint a person’s deceased loved ones or pets or their childhood homes, there is a healing effect. Being able to bring that to life for them again, being able to console someone through my artwork is the best.” She also paints murals and takes on commissions. She primarily works on oil paintings on canvas. Isabella presently gets most of her gigs from word of mouth. She also markets her work on Instagram. But most recently, she was hired by City Lifestyle publisher, Kelley Lamm, to render drawings for a series of children’s books that Kelley is writing called, “Oh Olive!” Isabella isn’t the first artist in her family, although she might be the first paid one of modern times. She says her maternal grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as her paternal grandfather, are all artists, though none were paid for their talents. She did, however, discover a relative on Ancestry.com who lived in France in the eighteenth century and was considered a “famous artist…I actually have a few of his drawings and paintings.” Isabella says she hopes the opportunity to work with Kelley will give her a wider audience. “I would love for people to see my artwork and recognize that it’s me: ‘That’s an Isabella Brouster!’”

Isabella Brouster also paints alcohol and wine bottles with cocktails next to them. "I love the way liquid looks in glass and the distortion that occurs," she says. "People use them to decorate their bar spaces and to give an art deco feel."

STL Blues Better Halves SIP, SHOP & SHOW SPECIAL EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THANKFUL NONPROFIT GROUPS

This time of year emphasizes gratitude stemming from opportunities to help others and be helped when needed. The St. Louis Blues 'Better Halves' group is a prime example of that valuable, selfless support. They're stepping up to provide a fun fundraising evening of fashion, cocktails, hor d’oeuvres, a silent auction and door prizes at a Sip, Shop & Show on Dec. 7. The Better Halves group is composed of wives and girlfriends of St. Louis Blues hockey players, coaching staff and managers. "Better Halves' goal is to generate funds that go back to the community," says Dominique Pino, Better Half of St. Louis Blues Hockey Head Coach Craig Berube. "We work with various charities to instill wellness and empowerment. Fashion is a fun way we're all connected. We're excited to have this additional, personal connection with the St. Louis community and fans." Hannah Arnold, director of St. Louis Blues Community Development and Blues For Kids Foundation, says show attendees at Stifel Theatre will receive a special swag bag. The event occurs between 6-9 p.m. at 1400 Market St. in St. Louis. Dominique lends a specific, personal flair to this event's planning, as she's an enterprising designer of customized clothing, home decor and upcycled furniture. She knows firsthand how clothes, or the right wardrobe, actually can change lives by building self-esteem. "It wasn’t until I worked with patients with special fashion needs that I truly saw how clothing affects confidence," she explains. "I've had the pleasure to help others find comfortable apparel that helps with compression or prosthetics." CONTINUED >

She says the simple pleasure of putting on everyday clothing is truly something many take for granted. Dominique has headed several fashion show fundraisers since 2009 to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer organizations in her home state of Pennsylvania. "My mom is a survivor, and I always felt I needed to do more to raise awareness," she adds. "Amber Van Ryn, the wife to Blues Assistant Defensive Coach Mike Van Ryn, is a breast cancer survivor as well. She introduced our group to STL Pink Ribbon Girls, and we've been working closely with them now for a few years."

During 2019, the $8,150 proceeds from a limited-edition clothing line designed by Blues Better Halves benefitted Hockey Fights Cancer. They've also assisted Operation Shower, a nonprofit that hosts baby showers for military families. Additionally, they raised funds for the National Diaper Bank Network and volunteered at Urban Harvest STL. Hannah says Blues Better Halves have contributed for 11-plus years to Lydia’s House families, with one of the most impactful and meaningful projects being shopping on behalf of, and decorating for, women and children who move into the transitional house as a safe space to heal from domestic violence. "Without ever meeting the Lydia's House women and children, the Better Halves create a warm, homelike space for them to recover," Hannah adds.

"Projects like this are what we are raising money for. The more we can raise, the more we can give back."

Yana Tarasenko, Better Half of player Vladimir Tarasenko, says St. Louis has become their second home. "There are a very large number of families, people and kids with different needs. I'm happy to contribute to the St. Louis community and charities.

Many think it's almost impossible to help everyone, but even doing small things, we make people smile and they have hope again." Shannon Allen, the wife to former goalie Jake Allen, introduced the group to Stray Rescue STL. Hawthorn Leadership School For Girls was conceptualized by Mary Stillman, wife of the Blues owner, Tom Stillman. The charter/college preparatory school opened in 2015, and was introduced to the Better Halves group last year. Members indicated they look forward to continuing their mentorships with the students there, particularly with it being the first public, all-girls school in Missouri. Kelly Armstrong, the wife of Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong, says energy coming from the Better Halves is admirable. "They truly care about the groups they're helping and touch the lives of those they're involved with. They always put the charity first." Kelly adds, “I've had the privilege of working with so many giving, selfless ladies through my 14 years here. I’ve witnessed a wife come with her newborn to build a Halloween backdrop for the Trick-or-Treating Event for Children’s Hospital. For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
