Whatever the next step for you is, we want to remain connected. With preparation in mind, take a look at our article regarding what's called Seasonal Affective Disorder, which literally can make people SAD during winters. For anyone who's considering pursuing a fresh face for the New Year, please see the article about plastic surgery on page 24. We also suggest a hearty recipe, a good book and a special outdoor spot to visit in this edition. We get a glimpse from a St. Louisan about what it was like to be on a new, national TV show about cake decorating, too.

“GOOD MORNING AMERICA!” For nearly two decades, those were the words we heard from TV broadcast veteran Joan Lunden when she greeted viewers on the ABC news program. As the longest-running female host ever on early morning television, Joan reported from 26 countries, covered five presidents, showcased several Olympics and kept us up-to-date on how to care for our homes, families and health. She’s a sought-after motivational speaker and has authored 12 books, including a memoir, Had I Known, documenting her breast cancer struggle and treatment. Now 70 years old, a mother of seven, including two sets of teen twins, Joan returned to morning television--reporting about Baby Boomers, aging and friendships on NBC’s The Today Show. In a virtual video interview with the journalist from her home, Joan tells me it was a question from a Hollywood reporter that prompted her to write her latest book, WHY Did I Come Into This Room? She recalls, “This young guy, his first question to me was, ‘Well, Ms. Lunden, what is it going to be like for you going back to morning television as a senior citizen?’ I almost fell off my chair!” she exclaims. “I mean, OK, fine. Technically, I am. But I’ve never

HERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE WORDS PLASTIC SUR-
GERY WERE ASSOCIATED WITH WEALTH AND THE AFFLUENT. However, the industry eventually dovetailed into mainstream life and has become more routine, likened to typical activities, such as going to the gym. Well-known plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Prada has been working magic on his clients for more than 16 years.
“As I’m getting older, I think about trying to spend more time together and not making it all about work.” “If you think about it, 15 years ago talking about plastic surgery on TV would have been taboo. Now patients are excited about their looks and want to share their experiences,” says Dr. Prada. After finishing a cosmetic surgery fellow-

ship in D.C., he joined the clinical faculty team at St. Louis University before eventually joining St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Prada says he always gets gratification from making his patients happy. “It’s incredible, they reach out whether it’s through Instagram or on Facebook, and that makes it all very rewarding for me,” he explains. When it comes to his cosmetic surgery patients, canceling an appointment is usually not an option. Dr. Prada laughs, “It’s funny, people will drive through snowstorms even if it’s almost impossible for me to get to the surgery center. They’ll call me and say the patient is waiting.” It’s a medical field that’s continuously evolving and changing, from the arrival of fillers and Botox to more involved advancements. “Technology has changed dramatically over the last five or six years for us to be able to do a 3D image of a patient, and show them what they can look like before and after; 10 years ago we couldn’t do that,” he explains. “There are so many things that have changed since I started practicing, and I would say most all of them are for the better.”

The doctor credits his parents for their guidance and lessons learned. “Both of my parents came here from overseas and believed in education, hard work and doing well, so those things were an enormous part of who I was growing up,” he says. Dr. Prada’s parents also instilled in him a deep family bond that he has continued with his own family. “My wife and I spend a lot of time together, whether it’s just going out to dinners or working out together or taking walks,” he adds. He says he also spends a great deal of time with his two sons: “Our oldest son is a senior in high school going off to college at some point, and our youngest is a freshman at CBC.” The family keeps pingpong tables and foosball in their basement for family competitions, and they spend a number of weekends out of town attending their oldest son’s lacrosse tournaments.

I’ve been doing my cake photography and sharing my creations with friends and family for years now. But when the producers of Candy Land saw my work via social media, it intrigued them enough that they wanted to see what I could do as a member of one of the teams. I was sort of 36

1. Pick a Problem to Address A leader can never become a catalyst until he or she first takes ownership of the problem they wish to solve. You cannot rally people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these days; people know when a leader is being half-hearted, and they don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that

credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey.
