FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Chesterfield with a bond between humans and animals that is so special. Meet a few of them and read on page 26 about their four-legged friend, Pepper, having a great time at Dream Play Recreation and around the city. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats so you can spoil your loyal companions. When’s the last time you had family portraits taken—or action shots of your kids

DENTAL PATIENTS. Those fun aspects are just some of the varied benefits offered by Chesterfield Family Dentistry to encourage and envelope children in comfort during dental visits. “Most people develop dental phobias when they’re young,

and those fears follow them throughout their lives. So we try to make those first set of visits as welcoming and relaxing as we can,” Dr. Jonathan Silva, owner of Chesterfield Family Dentistry, says. Dr. Jon knows a few things about motivating youths. He’s been coaching youth sports, especially lacrosse, for many years. He enjoys time with his niece and nephew. Additionally, he literally grew up in the office of his father, Dr. Herbert Silva, who was a West St. Louis County area dentist for 40-plus years. To counteract fear in kids during dental visits, Dr. Jon and his team incorporate a spectrum of interesting props and popular child figures to help communicate with young patients. Take, for example, their entertaining appeal through Sammy the Snake, a yellow and orange puppet with a tremendous toothbrush, who tells stories about what it’s like for snakes to often be unsubstantially feared. In the reception area, children can read about Curious George’s first dental visit. Or, children can watch Peppa the Pig, Disney movies or sporting events. Down the hall, patients hope to get their pictures on the wall through the practice’s Cavity-Free Club. Chesterfield Family Dentistry young patients can take home their “All-Star Brusher” certificate with stickers and kid-style brushes, because prevention is the best cure, reminds Dr. Jon. He says patients help decide whether popular characters, such as the Avengers or Disney princesses, are the best brushers.

CHESTERFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY

“One of the most common questions I get from young patients is about what new prizes are in the treasure chest,” Dr. Jon says. He delights in explaining to youths that the best brushers are not ones who race through the process and finish first. “Everyone should brush for two minutes, twice a day. And they like to guess what those times should be,” he adds. He also offers floss threaders with animal holders. After using a disclosing solution that reveals through purple or pink hues which teeth have been missed in brushing, children also can view photos of their mouth and be guided through how to reach those crucial spaces. “Our rule of thumb is that until a kid can lace up their own hightops and tie a double knot, their dexterity isn’t good enough to thoroughly brush their teeth by themselves. So, we recommend they receive help through that period,” Dr. Jon says. His commitment to getting children to brush properly goes so above-and-beyond, he’s developed a procedure that involves a rock ‘n’ roll-jiggle dance routine. “Because every tooth wants to dance,” he jokes. Chesterfield Family Dentistry patients also receive goodbye parties for teeth, after which Dr. Jon uses his magic wand to complete the deed. To round out dental education, Dr. Jon tells young patients about the sugar bunnies—or sugar bugs—that linger in their mouth. As the tale goes, these creatures start as bunnies. The more they eat and grow, the more mess they make. He gets children to recognize that mess has only one place to go: in their mouths. Once they get good and grossed out, and intrigued, he shares that those bunnies can transform into bigger bugs, which only make bigger messes. Yuck. By that time, who wouldn’t be reaching for a toothbrush and twice as much toothpaste? In addition to youth dentistry, the practice handles family, general and cosmetic dentistry, plus dental emergencies. Dr. Jon says his hygienists and dental assistants can handle up to five siblings simultaneously, or some combination of family members, so multiple trips or waiting through back-to-back appointments may be avoided. 13463 Olive Blvd. 314.878.9808 ChesterfieldfFamilyDentistry.com

Dr. Jon Silva, owner of Chesterfield Family Dentistry, assures his practice's dental team focuses on positive reinforcement with children, seeking to encourage them and help them feel special. He says it's vital that a child's first dental visit is a nurturing, patient and friendly experience.

MERCY EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND CARE TO LEARN ST. LOUIS CHAIR, DONN SORENSEN, WANTS KIDS BORN INTO POVERTY TO SUCCEED

HAVE THE SAME CHANCES IN LIFE AS DO THEIR MORE AFFLUENT CLASSMATES. As executive vice president for Mercy, Donn’s role as chair of Care to Learn—Greater St. Louis Region Advisory gives him the opportunity to do just that. In 2007, Springfield, Missouri, resident and humanitarian Doug Pitt saw the poverty statistics in his hometown growing, and he decided to take action. After reaching out to some of his influential friends in the Southwest Missouri area, he formed Care to Learn, a statewide organization that targets students with unmet health, hunger and hygiene needs that keep them from reaching their scholastic potential.

struggling to stay in school because of poverty issues,” Donn says. “We came up with Care to Learn as a way to get money in the hands of teachers without any bureaucracy, and when a hero teacher sees a student struggling from any health, hunger or hygiene issue, they can fix that issue then and there.” The organization raises money by doing fundraisers such as galas or golf tournaments. “The generational poverty and achievement gap is growing, and it’s growing fast,” he says. “Poverty is insidious.”

“HISTORY WILL REPEAT ITSELF, BUT IF WE CAN GET THAT CHILD THROUGH GRADUATION, HE OR SHE CAN NOW GET A JOB, MAKE MONEY AND MOVE ALONG IN THEIR LIVES.” —DONN SORENSEN “One of four children are born into poverty in this region, and the only way a child can break out of the poverty cycle is education,” Donn says. “But if poverty itself is keeping that kid from getting an education, that’s the insidious part, and that’s what we’re trying to solve.” Poverty and its ensuing problems, such as hunger, health and hygiene issues can keep children from attending school, and when they do attend, they can have trouble paying attention to the teachers. “If they’re hungry, they can’t focus,” Donn says. “If they don’t have clothes or hygiene products, the last thing they’re going to think about is education, because they’re just thinking about survival.” “So, kids in poverty underachieve other kids by quite a bit, and by the fifth grade, they are averaging third-grade levels,” he says. “Do you know how many kids in the Greater St. Louis area are homeless?” Donn asks. “How many will be sleeping on the street tonight? Two-thousand kids will sleep on the street tonight, and they don’t deserve that.” Care to Learn finds out about student needs from the school districts who have been approached by a superintendent, principal, school teacher or, sometimes, a school bus driver. “We tell them we will help them and give them some start-up money, but they need to engage their community and do fundraisers,” Donn says. Donn has many stories about students helped by Care to Learn.

“A teacher noticed two brothers weren’t going down to the lunchroom, and she found out the boys were hiding out in the boys’ room,” he says. “They didn’t have money for lunch and were too embarrassed to go to the lunchroom and sit with the rest of the kids.” Care to Learn got a locker in the principal’s office and stocked it with food for the boys to come in, get some food and go down and have lunch with the rest of the kids. “In another case, a teacher noticed that, all of a sudden, a boy wasn’t concentrating in school and was sick a lot, so she did a little sleuthing and found out that the mother had lost her job,” Donn says. “She didn’t have food or the right things in the home, so the boy was missing school.” Care to Learn got food and other items the family needed. “A teacher saw this girl, a senior, who had been doing well in school, but then she started missing days, having behavior issues, and the teacher thought something wasn’t

Care to Learn now serves more than 98,000 students in 34 school districts and has met more than 950,000 health, hunger and hygiene needs of Missouri students. “If a kid stays in the cycle and sees mom and dad not working and making bad decisions, and doesn’t have what he needs to stay in school, he’ll do the same thing,” Donn says. “History will repeat itself, but if we can get that child through graduation, he or she can now get a job, make money and move along in their lives.”

certainly proven her worth with the against-theodds prosperous fortune she’s brought him! Scott Berry bet “with his heart, not his mind” on Jan. 15 regarding the National Hockey League season while he was in Las Vegas. He put $400 down on the St. Louis Blues hockey team for winning this year’s Stanley Cup championship. At the time of his bet, the Blues had the worst record in the league and were given 250-1 odds. People snickered at him. Nobody’s laughing now that his long-shot bet paid out $100,000! The 31-year-old could’ve guaranteed himself some sort of profit by selling his betting ticket and also wagering on the Boston Bruins to win it all. Instead, he refused to hedge because he says he wanted to stick with the Blues. He got Gracie the day after he bought that ticket and considers her part of this blessing. “The ticket itself had a journey, going from my sock drawer so Gracie wouldn’t chew it up, to eventually my safe, to lastly a safety deposit box once I realized how valuable it was becoming,” explains Scott, who is a Parkway West High School graduate who now lives in Brentwood. To collect his winnings, Scott flew on a private jet to Vegas. He took the payout in a check, rather than chips. He wore the NHL’s limited-edition championship belt on the trip, but what he remembers most is believing that if he sold the ticket or even hedged on the Bruins, he would ruin all the momentum. “I’m very superstitious and a die-hard Blues fan,” he admits. He says he got kicks from hearing about people in various cities, including New York City, San Diego and Chicago, talking in offices about whether each other had heard about “the guy with $100,000 on the line” and whether he would sell or ride out the situation.

“This team, this city, these fans deserved the Stanley Cup way more than I deserve $12,000, $40,000 or $100,000. I wasn’t about to do anything to misguide it,” Scott says. “Sometimes in life, you just have to go with instinct and unwavering faith and let the big guy up above decide what happens!” Since collecting his winnings, Scott says he returned to work. “I just went to a conference in Orlando, and prospective clients walked up to our booth and asked for pictures with ‘the $100,000 Blues guy.’ It’s been truly surreal.” The first thing Scott bought with his winnings was a night out with friends. Then he did a giant barbecue for his dad on Father’s Day. Then he had to pay off his Stub Hub credit card, as he was racking up more expenses post-season. “I plan to donate to the Blues for Kids charity,” says Scott, who recommends counting blessings every day and always giving back some to help others. He says he’s so proud of St. Louis. “It feels so good to have something we can collectively gather around and celebrate. It’s much, much broader than just sports and a championship,” he adds. Kudos to Gracie for her part, as she must’ve been channeling the positive vibes from Barclay, this year’s Blues therapy dog in training.

My role as liaison between administration and staff also allows me to run a weekly conference. We bring all of our heart experts together to determine the best avenue of care for our patients.

Clinical excellence and the combined resources of BJC HealthCare make us a top heart hospital. Experts like ours, make us MoBap. Meet the experts dedicated to your heart health at: MissouriBaptist.org/MeetMyTeam
