IN 2019. Many say staycations are desirable, so they’re creating outdoor rooms with cozy furniture, exterior kitchens, lighting to extend outdoor space usage into evening hours, and speaker systems so favorite tunes can be enjoyed outside. Incorporating edible plants into landscapes are expected to continue to increase, including growing herbs in wall planters. Asymmetrical landscape designs, which are more casual and looser, also were predicted to be popular for this year. And, of course, for curb appeal, homeowners still believe landscaping is paramount for making positive first impressions.
Regardless of one’s goals for landscaping projects, experts at Frisella Nursery can assist with options and decision-making. Because they are a Missouri family-owned business operating for 66 years, they truly understand what plants work with the state’s various soil types and how Show-Me climate might affect landscaping in the future. Frisella Nursery’s Director of Landscape Operations, Tony Frisella Jr., assures they can combine and sync the best elements of soil, irrigation, land grades, plants and drainage tactics for each home’s situation. He is a certified arborist. Tony’s father, also named Tony, is co-owner of the business. He grew up at the side of his father and Frisella Nursery founder, Frank Frisella. Tony Sr. still designs landscapes and enjoys sharing his timetested tips with his team and customers. Tony Jr. just returned from California, where he attended training sessions about new lighting options for landscaping. He says color outdoor lights are possible, but their strength is not quite practical yet. “Color lights are coming but are about a year away,” he says. What is a hot, current trend is Wi-Ficontrolled irrigation systems, he says. “There are huge improvements in irrigation, including controlling things from phones or giving online access to landscapers so they can better monitor conditions and provide quick troubleshooting pointers even when not at the locations,” he adds. Tony says some irrigation devices can even recalibrate themselves to changing weather patterns. “One exciting feature is that some irrigation systems can memorize water usage through flow sensors for each zone of a yard. If someone’s on vacation and the system realizes the water usage is way above that memorized level, the entire system can shut itself down based on it receiving that error. That feature could save people $2,000 on an unexpected water bill,” he says. Other technology being integrated into landscaping

machinery as well. Another trend, Tony says, is homeowners wanting low-maintenance plants. “Just remember, low-maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance,” he warns.
One quick way to green up a hardscape is to plant succulents in pots, so they then can be brought indoors to overwinter. Tony says one landscaping trend that hasn’t fully hit the Midwest yet is natural

Creamy White Chicken Chili Recipe WANT TO DELIGHT OTHERS OF ALL AGES WITH FROM-SCRATCH CON CARNE? ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON
Kathy Helbig-Strick
CHESTERFIELD-BASED EXPERIENCE REALTY PARTNERS OWNER/ CEO KATHY HELBIG-STRICK HAS PERFECTED A WHITE CHICKEN CHILI RECIPE OVER SEVERAL YEARS’ TIME, AND SHE WAS KIND TO SHARE IT WITH CHESTERFIELD LIFESTYLE. “This is the No.1 unanimously requested meal by all three of my kids,” she confirms. “They love dipping buttered, rolled tortillas into the soup, and they relish the leftovers almost as much as the first bowls!” Kathy hit a new level of satisfaction in the recipe when she added chicken bouillon. She says at first the chili was a little bland, so the bouillon added both flavor and saltiness. She also added more cumin and oregano than called for in the original recipe. “I just keep sprinkling almost equal amounts throughout the entire cooking process until I reach the desired savory flavor. Use just a bit more cumin than oregano to keep ratios on target.” Kathy also suggests adding corn starch at the end of preparation to thicken the chili. “Because my kids like to dip tortillas, the chili needs to be thick and creamy enough to stick to the tortillas. But don’t forget that cream cheese and the bag of shredded cheese will be added at the very end so that helps thicken it just a little bit more after the corn starch stage,” she adds. She says she often keeps an extra can of Great Northern beans set aside for leftover chili because the beans tend to disintegrate in the heating of the chili; that way, more beans can be added during leftover meals.

Directions Arrange chicken breasts in baking dish. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Cover with foil and bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or until chicken is done. Cool briefly, pour out liquid, then shred meat with forks. Dice one large white onion. In a large stockpot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Saute onion for 2 minutes, then add minced garlic into the hot oil and onions. Cook for 1 minute or until onions start to soften. Add green chiles to onions, sprinkle flour over mixture and heat on low for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add Great Northern beans, 2 1/2 boxes of chicken broth, cumin, oregano, black pepper, chicken bouillon mixture, Bring to a low boil. Add shredded chicken. Reduce heat and simmer until flavors have blended, about 20 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste, along with more cumin, oregano and boullion, if desired, to taste. Take 1/2 cup of room-temperature chicken broth; add corn starch, stir until smooth and add to hot mixture until desired thickness is reached. Remove chili from heat; stir in 1/2 cup sour cream and bag of shredded Monterey Jack cheese. Stir until melted and creamy. Serve with toppings of choice. Note: This chili is great served with warmed flour tortillas, spread lightly with butter and rolled for dipping.

Chesterfield Lifestyle | March 2019
THERE'S A NEW LOCAL SPOT THAT'S GONE TO THE DOGS, AND THE CREW AT DOGTOPIA OF ELLISVILLE WOULDN'T WANT IT ANY OTHER WAY! They seek to socialize, exercise, educate and even entertain canines with dogged determination every day. "Our pet parents appreciate our progressive approaches to being a clean, organized and safe place for their dogs while they can't be with them," explains Nick Losciuto, dog dad and owner/general manager of Dogtopia. "Everyone likes our webcams so they can check on their dogs whenever they want. Webcams share our transparent way of caring for the dogs, and they provide peace of mind," he adds. Nick says before any dog can join Dogtopia, they administer a temperament test and meet-and-greet process to cover the basics of how each one will react to the sniffs and pawing of other dog friends, as well as how they deal with being away from pet parents. While a dog is being assessed, clients get a full tour, vaccination records are being confirmed, and a review of the dog's history is captured. He says some pooches may not be immediately ready for an indoor dog park environment, particularly if they are anxious rescue dogs that need more time to acclimate to their new lives. For those dogs, they can recommend trainers and tips as next steps. Dogtopia dogs participate in more than 5,500 square feet of open playrooms with canine coaches. The dogs are separated into various playgroups based on temperament, size and personality. They also have an outdoor play area for that type of recreation and stimulation. Nick says he and staffers spend a notable amount of time monitoring and adjusting what he calls "energy balance." Because dogs are in different moods on different days, just like people, some want to play more than others—or not. But Nick adds that dogs are very good at reading each other's body language, so dogs often will just move on to the next dog to see if they're ready to hang out together. Introductions of new dogs are carefully controlled at Dogtopia, Nick assures. They help shy, timid or yappy dogs gradually learn social cues and how to play with the other dogs. Nick says behavior modifications can take more than a month to occur, but they routinely witness positive transformations once dogs realize they can depend on a safe, supportive place.

HOT SPOT (CON TI N U ED) "Many pet parents watching on the webcams tell us they can't believe how differently their dogs behave when away from them, how outgoing they are," Nick says. He says many people also appreciate the amount of exercise that dogs get at Dogtopia, especially breeds that need an outlet for their natural energy. "We realize every dog is unique, so we always work from a feed list and pass on general observations to our clients." In addition to daycare, Dogtopia offers full-spa pampering services and boarding packages. Spa treatments can include teeth brushing, ear cleaning, massage and facials. Drop-offs at Dogtopia start at 6:30 a.m., and pickups are as late as 7 p.m. Nick says their facility works especially well for teachers, nurses, law enforcement officers and others who tend to have long work hours.
