AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Chesterfield Lifestyle in 2018! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Started in 1991, this event attracts more than 10,000 vehicles each year and more than 10,000 individuals during the Old-Fashioned Holiday Stroll. Walk-thru nights are Dec. 10-11. Guests also can see the lights from a horse-drawn surrey or wagonette, the city train or a sleigh hayride; reservations are required. Celebration of Lights is open Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (except Dec. 11) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays are for train, wagon and sleigh rides only. Train evening time slots include 5:45, 6:15, 6:45, 7:15, 7:45 8:15 and 8:45 p.m. Sleigh ride time slots each night are 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for cars and $15 for large vans or limousines. SOME CALL IT ACOUSTIC MAGIC. Joe “The Biz” Bizelli, a 33-year-old singer/songwriter from New Melle, started playing open mic nights in St. Charles coffee houses and performing at a retirement home in 2003. Now he’s working with one of Tennessee’s aspiring country music artists, Cole Sitzlar. After Joe moved to singing at bars, parties, wineries, corporate events and weddings, he eventually played music fulltime and has kept strumming since. “What separates Joe from other solo-acoustic musicians is his ability to cover a wide range of new and old music,

Cat Stevens, Rhianna, Dolly Parton, Dave Matthews Band, Beyonce and Blues Traveler,” says Bryan Herr, owner of Naked Vine in Chesterfield. Joe's first single, "Follow Me to New Melle," was released on iTunes and YouTube in March 2016. He says songwriting goals consumed him in May 2016 while witnessing some professional writers play at the Bluebird Café in Nashville. “They were so incredibly talented that no one spoke or made a sound while they performed. I knew that night that was exactly what I wanted to do with my life.”

Each event is completely unique and customized to fit clients’ needs from start to finish,” Mirela says. Unique events come from close attention to details. TIPS FOR BUDGETING EVENTS A perfect first step is to determine an event budget and establish its main purpose. Because many people struggle with keeping on-budget due to the lack of prioritizing and being realistic about what’s affordable, Jasmina says a planner is a great way to have a guide for budgets, along with realistic options. “Through honest, detailed conversations, we can find out what’s truly important to be spending money on,” she says. She suggests dividing event budgets into five major categories through a detailed spreadsheet, including items projected expenses, actual expenses, details and unexpected costs. “Each category should have its own sub-category, such as venue, catering, decor, transportation, entertainment, marketing and event planning fees. Ensure your budget includes service fees, gratuity and taxes,” Jasmina says. At least 20 percent of event budgets should be allocated to the unexpected costs category, she forewarns. To make the most of budgets, Jasmina and Mirela secure quotes from multiple vendors. “Pricing will vary from season to season, but the more details we gather, the more accurate event estimates will be,” Jasmina says. To extend budgets for corporate events, one idea is to ask vendors and industry partners to get involved by supplying products, donations or in-kind services. Ensuring all parties involved in event planning are on the same page regarding budgets is a vital step as well.

EFFECTIVE NOV. 4, THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF MISSOURI'S FACILITY IN CHESTERFIELD VALLEY CLOSED. The closure included operations of both the Adoption Center and Animal Medical Center of Mid-America at 17537 Edison Ave. Humane Society of Missouri President Kathy Warnick says the Humane Society’s board of directors determined the best use of the organization’s human and financial resources in the future was to concentrate on continuing operations of HSMO’s two largest facilities: the Macklind Avenue headquarters in St. Louis City and the Best Buddy Pet Center in Maryland Heights. "We are very grateful for the dedicated efforts of all of employees, volunteers and donors who contributed so much to fulfilling our mission in the Chesterfield area for the past 12 years," Kathy says. "We also sincerely appreciate the support of this community in giving loving homes to our animals and patronizing our veterinary facilities." She says they were fortunate that the organization was in a position to offer employment elsewhere in the organization to nearly all of the employees based at Chesterfield Valley. Those leaving the organization were offered severance packages. HSMO is the largest animal welfare organization in Missouri rescuing, rehabilitating and finding homes for adoptable animals. 50
