he penultimate month of the year is always a special one—one in which we're reminded of the wealth of gratitude we have for the people in our lives and for the Chesterfield community. The air is crisp, the leaves are changing and the year, although winding down, is as busy as ever, but we can't help but take some time to sit down and think about what we're thankful for at this time. We're thankful for friends and family. We're thankful for health, happiness and prosperity, and, here at Chesterfield Lifestyle, we're especially thankful for you. As we take the time to put together the issues from month to month, you—the readers—are always in our minds. We strive to bring you the good news of the Chesterfield community—to fill the pages of this magazine with the people and stories you care about—and we're thankful you take the time to join us each month. ovember is a fantastic time for wine. Just ask Bryan Herr, proprietor of the Chesterfield wine, whiskey and music venue, Naked Vine. Herr’s venue features domestic wines, whiskeys and artisan cheeses. When asked about Naked Vine’s chilly weather inventory seasons Herr responded: “Do we change during the seasons? Not so much the seasons… we change all the time. We’re always bringing in new wines, new whiskeys and new cheeses. We’ve got 90 wines by the glass and 80+ whiskeys. Any given week we can have 10 new wines and four new whiskeys. Production is so low on some of these that they’re here, and once they’re gone, they’re not available again until next year. We’re still solidly California, Washington and Oregon but we make every effort to find these smaller production wines and whiskeys.” It is safe to say that Herr relies on quality and exclusivity when it comes to recommendations, rather than catering to the current trend. The business is located at 550 Chesterfield Center, on the ring road around Chesterfield Mall. A resident of Westwood near Creve Coeur, Andy Kohn is co-owner, with his wife Dee Dee, of both that facility and EdgeWild Bistro and Tap in Creve Coeur. EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery will turn five years old this month and special celebrations are being planned, Kohn Says, adding that the business’ creation took an unusual path.

“I sold my family’s direct mail printing business in 2006, and, shortly after the sale, some friends came to me and invited me to join an investor group to open Chandler Hill Vineyards in Defiance, Mo.,” Kohn says. At that time, he was engaged in commercial real estate investing and management but, through his involvement as an investor in Chandler Hill, got involved and more interested in the hospitality and wine side of that business. After an unsuccessful attempt was made to expand Chandler Hill by building an event facility on its site in St. Charles County, Kohn started looking for sites to expand outside of Defiance.

“I found what’s now EdgeWild—the old Bahama Breeze restaurant building that had been vacant for five years—and I thought the building looked like a winery already, so I put it under contract and proceeded to create a business plan to create a second location for Chandler Hill to present to the owners and board,” he says. However, he couldn’t get financial support to do the deal. “So Dee Dee and I decided to do this on our own and open EdgeWild—it’s named after the subdivision where my wife grew up in the suburbs of Peoria, Ill., and our first date was at the Mount Pleasant Winery there,” Kohn says, who’s now been married 29 years. The couple’s younger son Michael lives in Denver. The oldest, Robert, had been assistant manager of EdgeWild Bistro, which opened in January of 2014 before he passed away in September of this year. “We’re honored to grow our business and brand in his memory,” Kohn says. “What’s unique about EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery is that we use a lot of wine-infused sauces, marinades and rubs in the food, and every dish we serve is paired with a related wine.” The most popular dish is the Beef Tenderloin Trio, which includes a trio of 3-ounce tenderloin medallions with three different sauces, two sides and is paired with a Cabernet. Another favorite dish is Chardonnay chicken, which uses Chardonnay in the sauce. The most popular appetizer is pistachio-encrusted goat cheese. “We’ve got several fantastic wines. Thirty of our wines are labeled EdgeWild, and we cobrand several wines with fine winemakers like Siduri and Patricia Green,” Kohn says. “EdgeWild just won a spot in the top 10 U.S. winery restaurants list put out by USA Today—we were the only facility in Missouri to receive that honor.” The restaurant’s dry-rub chicken wings were voted the best chicken wings by Riverfront Times magazine a couple of years ago and twice as among the best chicken wings in St. Louis by the WingDing charitable contest held each year—they won overall best in 2013 and second place in 2016, Kohn says. “We also won the best meat loaf in St. Louis by the Riverfront Times likely two years ago and, also two years ago, won the best bite award at Taste of St. Louis,” he says. Restaurant seating capacity is about 400, and, on a busy Saturday night, it likely serves about 600. “Likely 150,000 people come through the doors a year,” Kohn said. “We have lots of loyal customers, from Chesterfield and elsewhere in West St. Louis County and from St. Charles County—we have great access to Highway 40.” A wine club, for a nominal fee, lets members—about 650 to date—receive an EdgeWild label bottle of wine each month plus other benefits. Participants choose one of three club categories— red, white or Missouri/sweet—and each month can select a bottle of wine in that chosen category from the wine list and can drink it on the premises without a corkage fee or pick it up. Other perks include advance reserved seating in the bar and enclosed patio before 6:30 p.m., a $25 gift card for every $300 spent at EdgeWild and complimentary tasting of five wines any time at the tasting bar. A Wine Uncorked series, also for a nominal fee, is held at 5:45 p.m. on select Mondays over a series of weeks and is a comprehensive wine series of eight to 12 classes designed for groups of beginning wine professionals or wine lovers. Kohn said Dee Dee also has immersed herself in the industry. She’s a Level-2 certified sommelier/wine steward and is also a certified specialist in wine. “She’s the first female member of the Burgundy Society of St. Louis and of the Bordeaux Society of St. Louis,” Kohn says. Wine doesn’t need to be only for the wealthy, he said. “Our average bottles are priced between $30 and $45, and those make up 90 percent of our sales,” Kohn says.

ito’s in the Valley is a gastronome’s jewel in Chesterfield Valley, a place where new customers quickly become old friends. The Sicilian restaurant and gourmet pizzeria located at 138 Chesterfield Towne Centre. Owners Giovanni LaFata and his wife of five years, Jessica LaFata, who live in Wildwood and are parents to Luca (born Sept. 14) and Giovanni Andrea, 3, operate the facility—which opened in October 2013—in keeping with the family’s 20-year tradition in the restaurant business. Giovanni and his mom, Caterina Maltese, as well as his brothers Vito and Marco LaFata, in 1996, opened Vito’s Sicilian Pizzeria at 3515 Lindell Blvd. in St. Louis. But the restaurant bug bit even earlier than that. Giovanni’s dad, Vito LaFata, had opened a pizzeria in the old Gaslight Square neighborhood in St. Louis in 1966, “and none of us kids was much older than 4 or 5 when we knew we were destined to be restaurateurs.” “We watched our dad and mom do something so passionately—my mom had a strong passion for cooking—and it was always a race to the dinner table for all of us,” Giovanni says. “Even now, all our recipes at both the restaurants are based on our mom’s cooking.” Vito’s in Midtown originally opened as St. Louis Universit y’s

campus expanded and the theater district in that area strengthened, providing a great base of customers. “I saw what’s now the Vito’s in the Valley location by a friend in real estate, and I didn’t make it ten steps into the building when I decided I wanted to open a restaurant here,” Giovanni says. “Jessica was seven months pregnant at the time, and, when she gave me a thumbs up, it was a go. She fully designed the interior, and I did all the design of the kitchen layout and did all of the operations.” Caterina also helps out at the Valley site, “and she and our chef Bryan Srantz meet a lot,” he says. Vito’s in the Valley offers made-fromscratch Sicilian food for lunch and dinner, private events and catering. They just started opening for lunch on Oct. 1. “We locally source our food as much as possible,” LaFata said, adding vegetable change seasonally. “We just found a farm we’re starting to negotiate with—about 40 minutes outside St. Louis—to get all the meat. And I make the pizza dough fresh every day.” The restaurant’s full-service catering targets everything from small homes to offices to large facilities like hospitals. Both the main dining room and bar have large outdoor patios. “I believe the Long Road end of Chesterfield Valley is extremely family oriented regarding the neighborhoods that surround us,” LaFata said. “A lot of times, neighbors living close by run into each other when they come here.

anaging diabetes comes with costs. From healthy eating to testing supplies to medications, working toward recommended glucose levels can add up to some big financial expenses. The American Diabetes Association estimates that medical costs attributed to diabetes care equal about $7,900 per year and that medical expenses for a person with diabetes is 2.3 times higher than a person without diabetes. Meal planning and exercise are often first choices to manage blood sugars. Choosing healthy foods in the right amounts and staying active can help by decreasing insulin resistance, promoting weight loss, decreasing your need for medications and lowering your risks for diabetes-related complications. You don’t need to hire a personal trainer or join a gym to exercise. Check your community for free or discounted exercise classes, try walking the paths at local parks or walking at a mall, look for discounted exercise equipment or check the internet for exercise videos that can be done in your home. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive. Having a meal 26

plan and using it will help with portion control. Planning menus in advance and making a grocery list will decrease costs at the grocery store. Avoid shopping when you’re hungry. Signing up for your grocery store’s customer programs or shopping at discount grocery stores can also result in savings for you. Shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season or growing your produce is a way to save costs. Also, plan for leftovers – yesterday’s grilled chicken can be used for fajitas or a stir fry today. Monitoring your blood sugars may be part of your diabetes management plan. It is important to know how often to check your blood sugar and how to use these results. You can reduce some of these costs by choosing a monitoring system that is preferred by your insurance company, looking for discount programs from the manufacturers or choosing a less expensive monitoring system. Medication expenses seem to be rising each year. There are ways to help with these costs. Shop around – contact various pharmacies to find out which ones can offer the medications you need at a

lower cost. Ask for generic medications and take advantage of financial assistance programs offered by many pharmaceutical companies. Enroll in a flexible spending account through your employer or take advantage of Medicare benefits. Ask your doctor about possible dose adjustments and medication options. Your doctor may also be able to provide free samples of medications. Get to know your pharmacist. Small tweaks may impact how well your medications work. Don’t be afraid to ask your pharmacist to assess your medication list for possible cost-saving suggestions. Many people don’t learn about the costs of their medications until they’re at the pharmacy register. Putting in some effort to research ways to save costs before you go to pay for medications can result in big savings for you. cork wall and wine box wall are some creative home projects for local do-it-yourselfers who can incorporate their love of vino with their fondness for home improvements. Cory Lamp, who lives in Chesterfield, is the owner of Lamp Wine Cellars in West St. Louis County. His 10-year-old firm offers custom wine cellars and wine cabinetry. “I got the ideas for these do-it-yourself projects from a client of mine, who has created both,” Lamp said. “He’d had a lot of old wine boxes over the years and wanted to keep them in his wine cellar because he liked the artwork on them. So he created a wall of these boxes. He had also – like many people – collected buckets of wine corks and decided to use them on a bathroom wall there.” Here are instructions for both of the projects from Lamp.

CORK WALL

Sort the corks by height so that you can arrange in rows.

There are two main ways to adhere them to the wall. The first is via a hot glue gun, but I find that rather slow and messy. The second and preferred way is to attach with a Brad Nail Gun and at a minimum 1- and 1/4-inch brad nails. Of course, you’ll need an air compressor for this, and all of these tools can be rented from a local big box store if you don’t own them.

The time-consuming part of this project is accumulating and sorting the corks. Once this part is finished, the attaching to the wall really depends on the size of the project, but I can see installing 100 corks in an hour easily. Most likely the corks won’t cost anything (unless you drink bottles of wine first!). Tool rental is less than $50 a day.

WINE BOX WALL

1. Acquiring the wine boxes is easier than you’d think. Most wine stores purchase wines shipped in these boxes and have empty ones available, usually for free. Also, many private wine clubs ship their wines in boxes if bought in enough quantity. I have lots of clients who seem to have extra boxes lying around and want to get rid of the clutter! 2. If you start with a full box, you’ll find that often the good artwork is sometimes on the lid and sides but never on the bottom. So I break the box apart by literally knocking the bottom out with a hammer. The sides then easily come apart—but watch out for sharp nails. You’ll probably need to remove these nails with nippers or a pair of pliers. 3. Box ends are rarely uniform in size, so arrange them in a pattern on your wall that will require the least amount of cutting. 4. You will most likely need to make some cuts to get everything to fit, so a chop saw, jigsaw or handsaw and even a table saw will come in handy. 5. Put a couple dabs of Liquid Nails on the back side before attaching to the wall. I like to put a small brad nail in each corner just to allow the liquid nails to set up. 6. Works well in a backsplash-type area or, if ambiguous, on a larger wall to create more of a mural. 7. Time to do this depends on the size of the project, but could certainly be done in a weekend. Wine boxes really shouldn’t have to cost anything. If you don’t have the tools yourself, they can be rented. Liquid nails cost around $2 per tube, and you will most likely not need more than a few tubes. 34
