For her Gold Award project, Anna Casey, a 2016 graduate of Lafayette High School, sought to instill a love of reading in children in her area. She organized a team of 10 high schoolers to visit a second-grade class at Green Pines Elementary School one morning every other week. The older students read with the younger students and helped them create A-to-Z books. Casey also coordinated a book drive, collecting almost 900 books for Our Little Haven, a residential care facility for children. She said she plans to pursue a career in elementary education and enjoyed getting a glimpse into the field through this project. “Working with the kids was very rewarding,” Casey says. “Seeing them learn and smile and laugh confirmed my career path. I gained patience working with the kids who learn at different speeds, and I developed better communication skills talking with kids and adults.” Lafayette High School graduate Bailey Becker chose her Gold Award project after noticing an overgrown trail at a retirement facility near her home. Becker, who is attending Missouri State University in Springfield, said she never saw residents using the path or nearby bench at Gambril Gardens Retirement Community. She removed the invasive honeysuckle that had overtaken the trail and reinforced the bridge. Becker also coordinated with a licensed arborist who gave a presentation to the residents about area trees and plans. “The residents were really happy about my project,” she says. “The trail is an opportunity for them to go sit outside and enjoy nature.” Aparna Kasinadhuni, a senior at Marquette High School, wanted

She created videos and documents showing step-by-step instructions for completing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems using new Common Core methods. Parents and educators praised the site, and several teachers reported using the videos as part of their lesson plans. “I gained so many relationships with my peers, elementary school teachers and even some higher-level educators [through this project],” Licavoli says. “I learned that I can do anything that I set my mind to, and nothing can stop me from achieving Gold.” When Lili Hostetler, a senior at Metro Academic and Classical High School, learned that her former preschool, Claymont Preschool in Ballwin, needed a way to help new students and families acclimate to the school, she created a children’s book to satisfy the need and earn her Gold Award. She drafted the book and worked with an English teacher at her school to edit it, and illustrated each page by hand. After scanning the illustrations, she created both digital and hard copies to donate to the school. My First Day at Claymont Preschool follows a mouse and his dinosaur best friend— the bright colors and easy-to-follow story line make it a great resource for parents and families to read before attending the school. “The book also teaches kids about including others when making friends,” Hostetler said. “One character, a bear, is kind of shy, but the mouse invites the bear to play, gaining a new friend and confidence in going to preschool.” The Gold Award is the highest national award a Girl Scout Senior

an you imagine if your ancestors were transported to the year 2016 to find that we maintain friendships through texting and email? Photographs can be instantly shared on Snapchat and Instagram? Some people claim 500 “friends” on Facebook? How did we communicate with friends and family before technology played such a large role? I can remember a time when there were not even answering machines, so if you called and no one was home you had to try again until actual contact with another human was made. Before that, party lines existed—two or more families shared a single phone line and incoming calls had different rings depending on which household the call was trying to reach. If you wanted to make an outgoing phone call, you just might pick up the phone to find yourself interrupting the conversation of a neighbor. But even before telephone technology, letter writing was a primary means of communication. Generations ago you might leave a country bound for a new life across an ocean. Or pioneers might traverse the United States with a fair amount of certainty that they might not see family members again. So letters written that had to be transported over weeks or months by horse, stage coach, ocean liners or trains might be the only method to communicate important family information. I’ve discovered letters in my own family collections written to

TRAIN WITH THE BEST close family members only to discover that the family member had passed away in the time it took the letter to arrive. And yet now we can easily know what a distant cousin in another part of the world had for dinner last night. When vacations became more popular in the early-to mid20th-century, family members left with a vague plan of where they might go to give to family and friends. Postcards were written in hindsight instead of instant updates to Facebook pages. Or you might send a letter ahead to a town’s post office—a town you thought they might go to—and address it to General Delivery. And, of course, you didn’t call home because it was too expensive to call collect and pay phones required too many coins to call long distance. If you were only going to be gone a week or two you just trusted that things would be OK. If there was an emergency back home such as a death in the family, you could call the police in the town where you thought they were staying and give them their license plate number and ask the police to inform them of the happening. Can you imagine such an event now? And yet with all of this technology there does seem to be a closeness sometimes lost in many relationships. Quick texts replace deeper conversations and Facebook pages replace in-person gatherings. Yes, we still get together with friends and family, but I can recall my grandparents having much more regular contact with family and friends. Barbecues, basement parties and card games were weekly, or even nightly, occurrences. However, waxing nostalgic doesn’t change the fact that it is a wonderful thing to be able to easily chat with a good friend who may live 1,000 miles away, and see photos of the special events in their lives with some regularity. Even if the delivery method and timing have changed, the message is still usually the same. The relationships we have with family and friends will always be a part of our lives. And I still love the thrill of opening the mailbox to find a postcard from a friend from an exotic location.

Chaminade, at 425 South Lindbergh Blvd., is an independent Catholic day and resident school sponsored by the Marianist Province of the United States, and has been serving young men in grades six through 12. “My dad, Jack, class of 1954; brother John, class of 1980; and son Andrew, class of 2016, all went to Chaminade, as well as myself,” says Dan, class of 1982. Jack, who retired in 1996 as director for the F18 program in Switzerland for McDonnell Douglas, was sent to the school after his mom passed away when he was young. “My father decided it would be very important for me to be strong in the Catholic faith, and felt putting me as a resident student—originally in fifth grade—would provide stability and help support my formation in faith,” Jack says. “I enjoyed the guys I grew up with—we’re still all friends and get together once a month. I felt the brothers provided a good, stable base for life, good moral values and a good foundation. Chaminade became my home. Our family has started a family scholarship at the school as well, trying to help others go there—especially those who board and who have a lost a parent ” Dan, who is manufacturing technology integration leader at Boeing St. Louis, said he didn’t feel family pressure to go to Chaminade, but eventually followed in, especially, his brother’s footsteps. “My older brother John was having a great experience there, and when it came time for me to make a high school selection after going to St. Monica’s grade school, I was impressed by the friendships my brother was making,” Dan said. “I got an all around education in faith formation, focusing on an integral and holistic college prep experience. And Chaminade has a strong academic program with a family spirit I felt and still feel.” Dan was captain of cross country and track. “Each year at homecoming, the cross country team would run in and light bonfires to start off homecoming week, a memory that remains with me still,” he says. “I remember there was a big Catholic athletic conference cross country meet, and you had to run up a long hill with Chaminade’s football team cheering us on. Hearing those upperclassmen cheer us as we made the push up the hill is a special memory.” Dan’s son Andrew, 18 and now a freshman studying pre-med at the University of Mississippi, attended Rockwood District schools before Chaminade.

FAMILY CAN BE FRIENDS; FRIENDS CAN BE FAMILY WORDS LANDON GERVICH

’ve always had a big family—four brothers! Throughout the years, I have come to learn that you can’t pick your family—that is definitely not a problem for me. I’m actually really glad that each of my brothers is so different. Jack (9), my youngest brother, is into the theater and performs all summer at the MUNY, and there’s Mason (18), my oldest brother who is a very talented guitar player. Lucas (15) plays football for Parkway West and, finally, Mack (10) who ranks in the state in diving. I say it’s not a bad thing that you can’t pick your family. I know we probably would never have become friends without that bond, and I can say without a doubt in my mind that my brothers are some of my very best friends. We always spend time with each other when we can by helping each other with homework or just hanging out together. Even though we might have an occasional tiff, we genuinely enjoy one another’s company. Mason just left for college last month, but we still communicate daily—whether it’s through Snapchat, Instagram or FaceTiming. Some people might say that with our varying ages it would be hard for my brothers and me to get along; I think it actually helps because each of us can pass down wisdom of experiences to younger

brothers while the younger boys can help us with new technologies and seeing things through innocent eyes. Other people have it different from me—people who maybe were not born into a big family or people who don’t get along with their siblings very well. One example of a situation like this is between my best friend Evan and his sister—they don’t get along at all. In fact, he even considers my family to be his family, and with the amount of time he spends at my house, people already think he is just one of the brothers, anyway! So in Evan’s life, his friends are like family, and in my life, my family members are my friends. Friends can be family and family can be friends. Do you have any friends you consider family? Do you have some family members you consider best friends? Either way, we are all lucky to have important and special people in our lives that consider us to be important and special, too. Bonds are more important than boundaries, and love is more important than labels. Landon Gervich is freshman at Parkway West High School. Landon journals, plays the ukulele and has been interested in becoming a writer since the third grade.
