Cheers to 2026
January 2026 P U B L I S H E R , SALE S D I R E C TO R
Andy Manz | amanz@citylifestyle.com
January is here, and everywhere you look, there’s that unmistakable sense of reset—the collective inhale before a year begins in earnest. I’ve always loved this time, when the world feels both slowed down and brimming with possibility. It invites us to check in with ourselves, to imagine who we want to be in the months ahead, and to reconnect with the people and places that ground us. And if there’s one thing Denver does exceptionally well, it’s offering those grounding moments—whether through a slow morning enjoying a cappuccino in the warm January sun, a snowy afternoon walk, or a spontaneous conversation with someone who reminds you why this community is so special. This month, we’re embracing the quiet of winter and the fresh-start energy that comes with it. In these pages, you’ll meet locals redefining what wellness means for them, taking their dreams from pop-up to Michelin star, and discover simple ways to bring more intention into your daily rhythms, starting with some Colorado-made hair product. Think of it as an invitation to slow down, tune in, and set the tone for a year that feels both expansive and deeply rooted. As we step into 2026 together, my hope is that you’ll find joy in small routines, courage in new beginnings, and inspiration in the stories of our neighbors.

“We just completed a new build with Haley, and can’t recommend them enough. Their overall build process along with a dedicated site manager & project manager help ensure things go smoothly. The close coordination between the architect, builder, and subs allowed for an efficient build which took a lot of stress off my wife and I. As issues arose during construction they were handled quickly and fairly to keep things on track, and Dan and team continue to help resolve the inevitable remaining tweaks after move in. Would hire Haley again in a second!”

Decoding Macros for Optimal Health Macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats—are the building blocks of nutrition, supplying the energy and materials your body needs to function, grow, and stay healthy. While micronutrients support chemical reactions in tiny amounts, they make up the bulk of your diet and directly fuel everything from breathing to exercise to cell repair. Because each macro plays a distinct role, finding the right balance for your individual needs is essential for long-term health, performance, and well-being. Carbohydrates (which sometimes get a bad rap) are the body’s preferred and most efficient source of energy. They power the brain, muscles, and nervous system, especially during high-intensity activities. Proteins, made of amino acids, serve as the building blocks for muscles, enzymes, hormones, and tissues. They are essential for repair, recovery, and maintaining lean body mass. Fats support hormone production, brain function, and cell membrane structure. They also assist in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. Each of these nutrients is indispensable, and an imbalance in any direction can lead to fatigue, poor performance, weakened immunity, slowed recovery, or hormonal disruption. I talked with registered dietitian and fitness professional Erica Giovinazzo to understand how to determine the right macronutrient balance, as it is not a one-size-fits-all process. A broad starting point for many adults includes 25-35% of daily calories from carbohydrates, 30-40 % from protein, and 20–35% from fat. However, personal goals play a major role in refining these numbers. Individuals focused on building muscle (literally everyone!) benefit from adequate protein, something that has long been overlooked,
especially for women as they age. Erica’s general recommendation is 0.8 -1g of protein per pound of body weight. This can sound like a lot, and if you have been consuming much less, she recommends ramping up over a few months to give the body time to adjust. The body itself provides valuable feedback when macronutrients are out of balance. Too few carbohydrates can cause fatigue, cravings, and poor workout performance. Low protein intake can lead to slow recovery, muscle loss, and increased hunger. Insufficient fat may show up as dry skin, hormonal irregularities, or constant hunger. Noticing these signals and adjusting macronutrient intake in small increments—typically 2-8 % at a time—can help fine-tune a sustainable and effective balance. Erica works with clients over a longer period of time (6 months to one year is ideal) to really fine-tune the individual macro plan and adjust as the body finds its natural balance. If you are interested in having some help navigating your ideal macro plan, check out Erica’s Edge (Ericas-Edge.com), where you can learn more about her work and the different tiers of engagement she offers. Ultimately, the right macro ratio is a personalized combination shaped by your goals, activity level, preferences, and health status. Through mindful experimentation and some help from experts, you can discover the macro balance that supports optimal energy, performance, and long-term wellbeing. How The Other Side Academy– Denver Transforms Lives—and How the Community Can Help
In a city where conversations about addiction, recidivism, and the unhoused unfortunately often center on what’s broken, The Other Side Academy–Denver offers a powerful counterpoint: a community that rebuilds lives from the inside out. The Other Side Academy began in 2015 in Salt Lake City, inspired by more than six decades of proven therapeutic-community models. “The mission was simple: create a place where individuals ready to change could come—regardless of their past, their finances, or their history—and build a new future,” says Lola Strong, Managing Director of The Other Side Academy-Denver. What began as a single house has grown to include multiple homes, a women’s program,

graduate housing, and thriving social enterprises—now extending its impact through a growing Denver campus. The philosophy is rooted in honesty, accountability, and unconditional love. In this peer-led environment, students hold each other accountable every day. “This peer feedback is always rooted in care— not punishment,” Strong says. “Over time, students learn that accountability is actually a form of love.” Many staff members are graduates themselves, which fosters a culture of trust. “Their presence sends a powerful message to every student: If I can do it, you can do it,” Strong says. The 30-month residential program commitment gives students time to stabilize, develop emotional maturity, step into leadership roles, and practice the daily rhythms of “right living”—showing up, telling the truth, contributing to the community. They also learn to “act as if,” practicing the behaviors of the person
they want to become until those behaviors reshape their identity. “Meaningful change takes time,” Strong emphasizes. Students often arrive with years of trauma, addiction, and instability behind them. “Short-term programs can interrupt crisis, she says, “but long-term immersion is what truly rewires behavior and identity.” The Other Side Movers and The Other Side Furniture Boutique “The Other Side Academy was built on the belief that people deserve a chance to change their lives without barriers—and without creating a financial burden for taxpayers,” says Strong. “To make that possible, we operate entirely on revenue from our own social enterprises.” Those enterprises—The Other Side Movers and The Other Side Furniture Boutique—don’t just fund the Academy’s 30-month residential program. They’re also the training ground where students

learn to work, lead, show up, and trust themselves again. “This self-sustaining model gives us remarkable freedom,” Strong explains. “It allows us to offer a long-term, residential program at no cost to students or the public, and it ensures we can follow practices that truly work.” Students join moving crews, manage boutique inventory, serve customers, and take on roles many never imagined for themselves. “Many haven’t had someone trust them in years, and being part of a professional crew or managing a boutique department can be life-changing,” she says. Through that work, students “grow in confidence, integrity, and self-worth. They begin to understand that they are capable, reliable, and valuable—and that sense of identity becomes the foundation for lifelong change.” The Academy is financially self-sustaining, but it is community-supported—and that support matters deeply. “People who hire our moving company, shop at the boutique, offer professional expertise, or simply extend encouragement play an important

role in our students’ lives,” Strong says. “When the community gives someone a chance to succeed, that belief often becomes the spark that keeps them moving forward.” At its core, The Other Side Academy–Denver is a place where lives are rebuilt—not through charity, but through hard work, accountability, and belief. And the simplest way to support that mission is by using the very businesses that keep the doors open. When you hire The Other Side Movers, shop the boutique, or donate furniture, you’re doing more than supporting a business— you’re helping someone build a life they once believed was out of reach.

BREAKING THE MOLD Some brands begin with a business plan. Highland began with frustration—and a kitchen stovetop. Before he ever imagined launching a company, co-founder Boone Whiteside was simply a consumer searching for hair products that didn’t seem to exist. “I just wanted something that used earth-based, hair-health-friendly ingredients, was at least semi-sustainable or eco-conscious, and actually worked,” Boone says. It shouldn’t have been a tall order. Yet every product he tried either broke down by midday or came packaged in single-use plastic with a long list of questionable ingredients.

“WE ALIGNED ON THE NAME ‘HIGHLAND’ AFTER THE BOULDER STREET I GREW UP ON. WHICH PROPERLY CAPTURED THE HIGHER VALUES AND NATURE-INSPIRED IMAGE WE SOUGHT”.
That gap—between what he wanted and what the industry offered—became the spark for Highland. “If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself,” Boone adds. What started as a personal quest quickly crystallized into a three-part code that still defines the brand today: performance, health, and sustainability. “This code continues to drive every decision we make at Highland today,” Boone says. Highland’s origin story feels almost folkloric now: a young founder meticulously studying botanical ingredients, experimenting in small batches, and cooking early formulas on a Denver apartment stove. “The early days were all about identity,” Boone remembers. “I first hit the stovetop in 2019… we didn’t even publicly launch until 2021”. Those two years of trial and error gave the founders space to define what Highland meant—and what it could become. It was during that period that Boone, his co-founder Ben Medalie, and partner Jack aligned on the brand’s name. “We aligned on the name ‘Highland’ after the Boulder street I grew up on,” Boone says. “Which properly captured the higher values and nature-inspired image we sought”. Even now, Highland carries the energy of its scrappy origins. The brand was born in defiance of the limitations the founders heard everywhere: that natural products can’t perform, that sustainability and growth don’t mix, that gender-neutral beauty is too niche. “In hindsight, I suppose the experimental, stovetop Highland history proved this to us from day one: There’s always a different, potentially better way of doing things,” says Boone. “And we’ll always keep looking for it.” Ben, who spends much of his time listening to stylists and barbers, says the professional hair world has long struggled with a strange divide: products that perform well but are full of questionable ingredients, and products that are “clean” but unreliable for professional use. “Pros don’t use and stock ‘natural’ products because they don’t perform well enough,” Ben explains. “But needs and expectations are changing quickly.” Highland aims to bridge this divide. The brand works closely with its professional community, starting every formula with clean, science-backed ingredients and refining them through rigorous testing. “Hair cutting and styling is a true craft,” Ben says. “The products that professionals rely on… need to nurture and support a healthy, great-looking head of hair long-term”.
If “clean beauty” feels like a marketing cliché, Highland is determined to change that. Instead of relying on loose definitions, the Highland team builds from botanical and earth-derived ingredients—compounds selected for both safety and performance. They scrutinize every ingredient against leading standards, then narrow further, avoiding petroleum derivatives, silicones, synthetic polymers, and other staples of the industry. Their Glacial Clay Pomade, for example, replaces petroleum derivatives with beeswax, shea butter, arrowroot powder, and vegetable glycerin. Their cleansing products rely on gentle, coconut-based agents instead of harsh surfactants. And they’re exploring new innovations: beet-root alternatives to polyquats, pine-needle terpenes that outperform silicones, plant-derived polymers that shape and hold. From the beginning, Highland rejected the hyper-targeted, gendered marketing typical of the industry. “We never wanted Highland to be a macho, hyper-masculine brand,” Ben says. Instead, they’ve built a line that emphasizes individuality and inclusivity, with minimal, universal packaging and a focus on results—not stereotypes. “Traditional beauty norms limit people… Highland exists to move beyond that—to make haircare feel accessible, relatable, elevated, and genuinely human,” says Ben. As proud “1% for the Planet” members who give 1% of sales to organizations that protect our ecosystem, Highland bakes sustainability into its operations: infinitely recyclable aluminum packaging, eco-conscious ingredient sourcing, and partnerships with organizations working to reduce plastic waste and capture carbon. “We knew there had to be a better way,” Boone says. “We've got a long way to go, but our commitment to become an industry leader in this domain will be unwavering”. Perhaps what surprises Highland’s founders most is just how many people felt the same frustrations they did. “We never dreamed that this many people would resonate with our mission,” Ben says. With new products in development for 2026 and an expanding community of both everyday consumers and pro stylists, Highland plans to keep questioning industry norms. “We will continue nurturing our incredible at-home and pro communities and continue revolutionizing the hair and beauty industry with products, practices, and overall purpose that wows... hopefully for generations to come,” Ben says. “Onward!” To learn more about Highland, go to Highland.Style, or follow on Instagram at @highlandstyleco.

CHEF JUSTIN FULTON Brings Margot Home to Colorado to Find More than One Reward
Margot has been a presence in Denver’s culinary scene since its pop-up days as a little secret in passing culinary conversations. Chef Justin Fulton and his wife, Maggie, decided to move back to his home state of Colorado to raise their family and hopefully pursue his first solo venture. Fast forward a few years of pop-ups, an expanding family, and Margot held its last pop-up on a Monday and opened the doors to its brick-and-mortar location for friends and family that following Saturday in the spring of this year. Margot is located on South Pearl Street in Denver’s historic South Pearl Restaurant district, and shares a space with Toshi Kizaki’s omakase experience, Kizaki. Introduced to Toshi through local Japanese ceramicist, Kazu Obu, Kizaki was looking to share its space with a like-minded Chef, and Justin was ready. Opening with an eight-seat Chef’s counter, featuring a twelve-course
tasting menu, and a dining room for a more casual experience, Margot has quickly established itself as a core pillar in Denver’s dining scene. Within its first six months, Margot has received national recognition, including earning its first Michelin star. When asked how it felt to bring this concept to life in Colorado, Chef Justin states, “Bringing Margot home to Colorado has been every bit as rewarding as I’d ever hoped for. Meeting the people who are so excited to find out what we’re all about is a cherry on top.” Chef Justin and his team, some of whom have been with him from the Coperta pop-up days, showcase local, seasonal, Colorado ingredients with finesse and sophistication. Notable dishes include the Olive Oil Brioche, set out to rise in front of you, then baked fresh for a later course. Additionally, the Kinship Toast course, made with a Boulder-based sourdough, topped with foie gras parfait, and continuing the ode to Colorado producers, paired with North Fork Valley’s Aquila Cellars’ riesling Chamisa.

“MARGOT, IF SHE WERE A PERSON, HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE EASIEST TO GET ALONG WITH, THE LIFE OF THE PARTY. THAT STILL VERY MUCH IS THE IDENTITY OF THE RESTAURANT.”
Whether dining at the Chef’s counter or in the dining room, the ambiance emanates a feeling of home. As courses are served, that feeling is expanded upon by the incredibly charming staff that keep you grounded with personal touches. The experience is intentional, Chef Justin explains: "Margot, if she were a person, has always been the easiest to get along with, the life of the party. That still very much is the identity of the restaurant. She makes you feel welcome as if you’ve been there before, but might challenge you to try her new appetizer with snails. HIDDEN GEM This Luxe Cherry Creek Residence Boasts a Feature Rarely Found in Town—an Unparalleled Sense of Privacy
Tucked into a quiet circle near Denver Country Club and Cherry Creek North, a rare gem awaits its next great act. Listed with Deviree Vallejo and Liz Richards of LIV Sotheby's International Realty, the residence at 2630 E Cedar Ave is one of eight addresses on the street that can claim what very few homes in Denver can—all the luxuries and convenience of one of the city’s best neighborhoods and yet all the privacy and seclusion of a gated community.
SENSE OF PLACE
ARTICLE BY KATHERINE OWEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATE KOERNER WITH WAYUP MEDIA
While it’s undeniably in the heart of the city, it’s a true Colorado home with a seamless connection to the outdoors: “There are a multitude of exceptional features,” explains Deviree, “but I most appreciate the outdoor living spaces.” She highlights how the kitchen is wrapped by two outdoor spaces, one with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that disappear to reveal a spacious patio with a pizza oven and a built-in bar and grill. On the other side, additional glass doors lead to a cozy fire pit with outdoor seating that beckons for after-dinner drinks. Upstairs, a sprawling rooftop-style deck is outfitted with lounge chairs and plush seating anchored around a second fire pit, where west-facing mountain views offer an al fresco ambiance like no other. The home’s hospitable mien continues indoors, where three fireplaces across the three stories conjure an atmosphere that’s equally inviting. At 7,000 square feet, the floor plan is designed to easily flex between everyday living and elegant entertaining. From the second guests step through the grand, 12-foot, custom oak pivot door into the entry, an open layout cultivates an intuitive sense of flow. Five bedrooms and seven bathrooms are spread out across the three levels and are accented by amenities like a home gym, an office, and plenty of spaces to entertain, from the 1,500-bottle wine cellar to the full lower-level bar to an upper-level wet bar. The kitchen, of course, is fashionable and functional, seamlessly connecting to the dining space and living room. But behind the masterpiece of stone and wood is a hard-working prep kitchen, where much of the real action happens. Perfect for stashing countertop appliances and extra dishware, the high-function, highstyle space boasts dual dishwashers, wine refrigeration, and copious storage. But for true oenophiles, the wine storage doesn’t end there: out in the heated, three-car garage, you’ll find an additional 250-bottle wine fridge (alongside a convenient dog wash!).
BUILT FOR THE FUTURE
While contemporary architecture and sleek finishes make the home feel perfectly of-the-moment, its design details make it fantastically forward-thinking. An elevator next to the stairs ensures easy access for all to every floor and invites owners to age in place. Seamlessly integrated smart-home technology brings enhanced function with just a tap. And a professionally managed HOA handles the gate maintenance, private trash pickup at the home, snow removal (including sidewalks and paths), and upkeep of shared roads and fencing, so residents can relax, making the most of this rarefied retreat. ARTICLE BY KELSEY HUFFER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HALCYON, A HOTEL IN CHERRY CREEK
Rather than waiting for our schedules and bucket list locations to align, my burnt-out friend and I, long overdue for a connection, set one simple, immediate goal: a one-night staycation. We had no excuse; we had to unwind and enjoy ourselves. We picked the first available night and stole away locally to Denver’s Cherry Creek North. Bypassing the itinerary, we made a no-pressure agreement—we booked Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek and simply indulged in the art of showing up. The location’s effortless and Halcyon’s unpretentious luxury allowed us to quickly unwind. Checking In, Tuning Out: Recharge Your Battery in Local Luxury We chose Halcyon Hotel as our basecamp for a staycation refresh. Halcyon offers more than a hotel stay; it provides a truly curated experience. Its philosophy of "Unexpected Luxury"
shines the moment you step up to the Kitchen Counter—the lobby check-in feels like arriving at a stylish friend's home. They immediately offered us prosecco or a regional beer, setting an instant tone of easy indulgence. The Kitchen Counter also provides 24/7 handmade espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and tasty snacks. We appreciated the environmentally friendly yet decadent nook found on each floor, which offers complimentary sparkling or still filtered water, tea, and fresh fruit. The rooms themselves encourage unwinding. They feature plush velvet, vibrant textiles, and thoughtful tech, including an in-room record player and a selection of vinyl, perfect for setting the desired mood. The details elevated our stay, yet we felt perfectly comfortable and at ease with Halcyon’s welcoming opulence and unassuming sophistication. Indulge Without the Itinerary: Walkable Access to Shopping and Dining After settling our things, prosecco still in hand, we stepped outside to shop. Surrounded by the 16 walkable blocks of Cherry Creek North Shopping District, we happily left the car with the valets for our entire stay. We spent the afternoon strolling, dipping into locally-owned high-end boutiques, art galleries, and designer flagship stores. Cherry Creek North boasts one of the city's highest concentrations of independent galleries and locally owned boutiques. For longer Denver stays, or for the out-of-towner, Halcyon also makes a perfect spot, offering easy access to favorites like the Denver Botanic Gardens, Red Rocks, Union Station, and the Denver Central Market. We sipped delicious seasonal drinks, including a homemade eggnog, with a clear view of the city skyline and wished we’d saved some room for the delicious-smelling pizza. Thanks to a bit of luck and being in the right place at the right time, we grabbed nightcaps at B&GC Denver, a clandestine speakeasy with fabulous decor set in the former post office. The bartending excellence and atmosphere make it worth breaking our rule next time to make a reservation. Curated Wellness and Adventure, with Less to Pack The Gear Garage is a unique amenity that truly sets Halcyon apart. Guests receive complimentary access to premium items like Vespa scooters, luxury bicycles, and a selection of cameras. Grab a cruiser bike and glide along the Cherry Creek Trail, just steps away. For the wellness-minded friend, the hotel offers a Wellness Passport, granting free access to premium local gyms and studios—a fantastic way to keep up your routine while you relax or try a new studio.
High-End Sips and High-Quality Company: Grown-Up Getaway Once we worked up an appetite, we returned to the hotel, facing a hard choice between dinner at Local Jones or Quality Italian. We settled the choice by coin flip, welcoming respite from the decision fatigue that plagues us during the week. We enjoyed a delicious, unpretentiously elegant meal at Local Jones. They deliver modern American fare in a setting buzzing with energy—a perfect spot for dinner or a lively brunch. Afterward, we went up to Halcyon’s rooftop pool deck and bar. I look forward to returning to enjoy the heated infinity pool that stares directly at the Front Range. We cozied up near a fire pit, and the attentive staff at the Rare Bird brought us blankets.
