Our Perfectly Imperfect Summer Adventure This summer, we tried hard not to over-commit ourselves, planning only a few things and sporting an overall agreement to just let life happen. (Not an easy task for this recovering over-scheduler.) Then life reminded me that I am never actually in charge anyway (gasp!) when our daughter tested positive for COVID the first week school let out, several days shy of her first sleep-away camp. By the time we reached the afternoon the day before camp was set to begin, she tested negative. We rejoiced and we packed…only to hear later that evening the camp had to regrettably shut down due to a staff outbreak. Sometimes the irony of life is laughable. We made the best of it, and when plans with friends fell through later on or the weather refused to cooperate, we reshuffled, again and again. Oddly enough, the camp closure set a carefree tone for the summer, making it no longer about what we did, but rather how we adventurously went about the day. By summer’s end, we’d leaned hard into winging it, and something that had me feeling anxious in June had become second nature by late July. As the bucket list items were ticked off—picnic brunches, nights spent in tents, farmers’ markets and dinners alfresco—I realized by not trying to control anything, I actually felt more in the moment than I ever had before. Isn’t that something? Here’s to living perfectly imperfect lives together,

“This works really well as a small business. When working with small vendors, they don’t require an order minimum or a set amount of production time. Hopefully, I will grow to be able to make quantity and have items in stock, but right now, everything is made to order,” Lulu says. “While items are in production, I will typically stop into the shops and factories once a week to make sure my ideas are translating to how I imagined them to be.” And though her focus is set squarely on the future—of the brand, the industry, the planet—history is woven into each and every item. Each piece is named after a craftsman or artist from the past.
Based in Los Angeles, the Colorado–born furniture, textile and interior designer Lulu LaFortune got her start working for names like Kelly Wearstler and James Perse. But after she found herself furloughed at the start of the pandemic, she knew it was time to debut her own eponymous brand, Lulu LaFortune Limited. “With this free time on my hands, I learned that a lot of small shops and craftsmen in LA were still looking to work on projects,” Lulu explains. “So with some designs in mind, I spent the summer of 2020 prototyping a collection, and I launched my own brand in October of 2020.” Now with almost two years and several collections under her belt, she’s rapidly expanding into new categories, with goods of all sizes and functions, having initially launched her brand with large-scale pieces and lighting. “This most recent collection has been all about expanding Lulu LaFortune Limited into a lifestyle brand, which is the ultimate goal! With this launch you’ll find glassware, napkins, blankets and smaller pieces of furniture like cocktail tables and dining chairs,” Lulu explains. “While I love designing sofas or standout table lamps, I wanted this collection to have products that allow you to integrate the personality of my brand into your home without the huge commitment.” A common thread you’ll find in every collection is the desire to make something that lasts—something that’s heirloom quality. Lulu points to the staggering statistics when it comes to design industry waste: According to the EPA’s most recent estimates, just under 10 million tons of furnishings end up in the landfill each year. “By researching and interviewing dozens of families, I learned that furniture gets passed down very often— but those pieces that do get passed down have to have a strong purpose or a story, which can only happen if the furniture is well-made and can survive decades of use,” Lulu explains. “So, while the reasoning behind crafting heirloom-quality pieces is to avoid the world of fast furniture, it is also to create meaningful pieces of furniture that can have a story and purpose in your home.” Currently, all items are made in LA, where Lulu gets to check in personally on production.

“While I love designing sofas or standout table lamps, I wanted this collection to have products that allow you to integrate the personality of my brand into your home without the huge commitment.” “I work with a dear friend, Claire O'Neill, who is an art history genius, and we love to spend time researching notable creatives from the past,” Lulu says. “My favorite of the bunch is the names of my recently launched glassware. Each color is named after a woman who worked at the Tiffany Glass Studio. A lot of people might not know this, but while Louis Tiffany was the founder of Tiffany Studios (the creator of the famous Tiffany lamps and lampshades), there was an incredible team of women designing the patterns of the lamps, cutting the glass and creating the iconic pieces that we think of today. So I decided to honor these women by naming each of the tall tumblers I designed after them.” Snag a Tiffany glass or another future family heirloom at LuluLafortune.com, and find Lulu on Instagram at @ lulu.lafortune.

Work Options: The Helping Hen Food Truck WorkOptions.org | TheHelpingHen.com Previously Work Options for Women, this culinary organization was founded in Denver in 1997 with a mission to help individuals overcome long-term employment barriers by providing job training and resources, from acquiring proper identification to group therapy sessions. Work Options allows hands-on experience for adults who were formerly incarcerated, are transitioning off of public assistance, are facing housing insecurity, or are looking to gain work experience. The free fourto six-week training program teaches students applied kitchen work while offering support for successful employment and sustainable living. The Helping Hen Food Truck is a paid internship opportunity following completion of the Work Options’ training program. In addition to providing employment opportunities, the truck serves Denver’s food-insecure community, having offered 100,000 emergency meals since its opening. This past winter, the Helping Hen collaborated with Colorado Village Collaborative to offer free meals for unhoused individuals and created lunch meals for staff at UCHealth. Those interested in applying for the program can go to workoptions.org/ new-students/ and donation information can be found at workoptions.org.

Community Foodshare: Mobile Pantry at Centennial Elementary CommunityFoodshare.org A member of Feeding America, Community Food Share was founded in 1981 after several Boulder County organizations met to discuss how they could best resolve hunger issues within the area. The organization’s multiple programs—from the senior food program “Elder Share” to its mobile pantries across many locations— engage Boulder and Broomfield in eliminating hunger. Community Food Share partners with Broomfield FISH and Centennial Elementary School (13200 Westlake Drive, Broomfield) on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 2:30 to 4 p.m. to bring fresh produce, dairy, meat and other items to those in need of food assistance at no-cost, on the go. Saving households about $120 per visit, the mobile service assisted 3,500 community members in 2021. The purpose of the mobile truck is to increase access to food and decrease the need to travel, according to Community Food Share’s marketing and communications manager Frankie Ryder. The organization asks that those who attend bring reusable shopping bags, as well as photo identification and proof of current address in Boulder or Broomfield counties. Information on donations of food or funds to Community Food Share can be found at CommunityFoodshare.org/donate/ and volunteers can go to CommunityFoodshare.org/volunteer/ to join the mobile service team or learn more about their local needs.

It’s easy to focus on your surroundings at Three Saints Revival. What with its riot of colors and patterns, the floating cloud sculptures and dream imagery wallpaper, there’s a lot to attract your eye. So yes, you may get swept up in the bright, convivial space, but soon your tummy will rumble, your throat will get dry, and then you’ll remember why you’re there in the first place: To eat and drink. And eat and drink you will. You’re at Three Saints Revival because you love tapas and lots of them, cocktails that are kissed at the table with rose water and desserts that expertly mix sweet with the savory. You’re at the anchor restaurant of the Hotel Indigo to indulge your taste buds, at the Mediterranean tapas destination designed to please multiple of your five senses, but especially taste. Three Saints Revival’s executive chef John Broening has helmed many of Denver’s top kitchens, including Duo, Argyll, and, where he first met restaurant owner Robert Thompson, Brasserie Rouge. Here he gets to go wild with small plates, the little bits of this and little bits of that that are fun to order and even more fun to eat. There’s the super-refreshing watermelon salad with feta and cucumber, well-dressed with red wine, vinegar, and olive oil; the deceptively spicy broccolini speckled with pickled Fresno peppers and anchovies; the house favorite shrimp and CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . chorizo, rich with garlic and sherry butter; and the sofrito-draped lamb meatballs atop creamy parmesan polenta. Oh, and then there are the patatas bravas, a full-on tower of crispy-skinned tater spheres atop a medley of aioli, tomatoes, peppers and onions. Dessert comes from multiple James Beard Award nominee Yasmin Lozada-Hissom, so obviously you’ll be ordering at least one thing off the sweets menu, and hopefully more. The citrus olive oil cake is a staple, a well-balanced cake served on a thin pool of caramel alongside a scoop of pistachio gelato. Or there’s the flan tocinillo del cielo, or “heaven’s bacon,” a silky chunk of flan with caramelized shredded coconut that lives up to the lofty name. Of course you’re thirsty too, and so you’ll want to explore beverage director Patrick Williams’s section of the menu. The wine list is presented in a unique way—as a map, where you can pick your sip based on geography if not varietal. Cocktails range from the bubbly Italian Apertivo di Sicilia (blood orange gin, amaro, quince syrup, lime, and prosecco) to the singular Pan’s Cave (aloe vera liqueur, mezcal, lavender syrup, drinking yogurt, lime and a spritz of rose water). You’ll want to try something unexpected, because what fun is the expected? If Three Saints Revival sounds like a good time, that’s because it is. It was designed to be a post-COVID gathering space, where we can reconnect with friends over good food and drink. It also just so happens to be a bright, bohemian dreamland, because reconnecting with friends over good food and drink is even better in bright, bohemian dreamlands. So yes, enjoy the full sensory ride that Three Saints Revival offers, but especially that good food and drink. ThreeSaintsRevival.com

“When walking through the home, there is a strong juxtaposition between the classic, authentic architecture and the modern feel of today.”
Taken from a scene from Bridgerton, this English countryside estate is nestled away in Cherry Hills Village. Sitting on nearly six acres, 8 Sunset Drive is a remarkably private oasis inside and out. From the portico entrance held high with white columns to the open floor plan and vaulted ceilings, this home is a case study for the Georgian Revival style, says listing agent Josh Behr with LIV Sotheby's International Realty. The story of this property goes back to the 1920s. While the history remains, modern touches are found throughout the more than 17,000-square-foot house. “The home has had several renovations since 1920, yet all the owners have acted as stewards of the original aesthetic and craftsmanship by ensuring the updates and maintenance be upheld to the highest standard,” Josh says. “When walking through the home, there is a strong juxtaposition between the classic, authentic architecture and the modern feel of today.” With a clean, modern aesthetic consistent with the finest homes of today, it’s clear that the current owners have thought meticulously about this property. Take the dining room for example. The elegant space is laced with a crown molding design on the ceiling and trim throughout. The crystal chandelier, French doors and large windows boasting natural light really tie the space together. “The timeless architecture and elegant interiors make this a rare find and truly unique offering, placing this home and property amongst the finest in the country,” Josh says. “Its refined, classical aesthetic, clean lines and expert craftsmanship are stunningly complemented by extensive modern conveniences in the way of state-of-the-art appliances, luxury amenities and state-of-the-art technology featured throughout the home.” Carrying on with the home’s theme, the updated kitchen boasts white cabinets with black accents and stone countertops, high-end appliances, and a substantial hood creating a kitchen enviable to the finest chefs. In addition to his and her offices and a variety of spaces to gather and entertain, this home features a guest quarter, seven bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.

The real treasure, though, are the grounds—a space of beauty and caliber rarely found. A fountain sits in the center of the stone terrace, which spans the width of the house, and two cascading staircases invite guests to the lawns surrounded by mature trees. In fact, this outdoor living space is Josh’s favorite aspect of 8 Sunset Drive. “The grounds are irreplaceable and most certainly the most breathtaking element of the home,” he says. “The structure is beautiful and significant in its own right, and in fact, the connection between the interior spaces and sprawling yards and gardens evident in virtually every room in the house serves as a constant reminder of this incredible property.” The vast acres also create a sanctuary, with exclusive on-site amenities like a tennis court, pool, play structure and several patios for all occasions. Located in Cherry Hills Village, this property feels set apart from the everyday bustle of the city but still maintains quick, convenient access to Cherry Creek, downtown Denver and the Denver Tech Center. 8 Sunset Drive is currently listed for sale by Josh and the Behr Team for $12.9 million. 8SunsetDrive.com

Local Dog Dates NEARBY PLACES TO TAKE YOUR BEST PAL FIDO
Our four-legged pals are some of our best friends and closest companions. We take them on walks and hikes and occasionally let them join us for coffee, drinks, or a weekend of camping. But not everywhere we go is deemed dog friendly. As the warm weather soon turns to fall, we put together a list of fun places in and around Cherry Creek to take our furry friends. Don’t forget to pack extra water and doggie bags to pick up pet waste.

Please keep in mind that dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, unless in a designated off-leash area, according to the city of Denver.
HIKING
Like us, our dogs need exercise too. While neighborhood walks are fine, most Coloradans love adventure. A great way to combine spending time with your dog, hitting that 10,000step goal, and finding adventure is exploring nearby trails. First on our list are the Cherry Creek Park and Cherry Creek Trail. Running along Cherry Creek and the backside of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, this trail spans from Denver to south of Parker. If you and your four-legged friend want a short but pretty walk, we suggest starting at the park behind the shopping center and making your way toward Colorado Boulevard. Along the roughly 1-mile walk (2 miles round trip), you’ll come across a beautiful creek, Pulaski Park and the City of Brest Park at the end. Another great park worth visiting is Cheesman Park. The 1.5mile inner loop or 2-mile outer loop is a popular option for trail running, walking, biking, and of course, walking your dog. The beautifully landscaped park also boasts large trees perfect for sitting in the shade. Another hiking suggestion is visiting the Cherry Creek State Park. This roughly 20-minute drive from the Cherry Creek area is well worth it for you and Fido. The state park features a 107-acre off-leash area with water access for canines to enjoy. A vehicle day pass will run you $11.
DOG-FRIENDLY PATIOS
If lunch or drinks on the patio are more your speed, be sure to visit Watering Bowl. Staking claim as Denver’s best “pawtio,” this dog-friendly patio is attached to a bar serving up a variety of drinks, including Rescue Brews named after popular dog breeds like Labrador Lager and Great Dane IPA. All well-behaved dogs are welcome to hang with their owners here and meet new friends. In the warmer months, Watering Bowl typically has kiddie pools for dogs to cool off in too. Another dog-friendly patio option is the Cherry Creek Beer Garden attached to the Moxy hotel. Located at 240 Josephine St., this patio offers craft beer, sharable plates, a variety of seating options and games. This local hot spot tends to get busy on the weekends, so we suggest arriving early to find a shaded spot for your dog. Other dog approved options include patios at Cherry Cricket and Chopper’s Sports Grill. With plenty of shade covering, Cherry Cricket or Chopper’s Sports Grill’s patios are great options for hot days.
PLACES TO STAY
Weekend staycations are a great way to mix up the week for both you and your dog, and if you really want to elevate your local dog dates game, consider booking a room at a petfriendly hotel. The Moxy hotel allows one dog per room up to 60 pounds, according to its website, with a $100 non-refundable fee. Another Cherry Creek hotel, Halcyon, will host you and your four-legged pal for an additional $75 amenity fee.
