As Luck Would Have It I’VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF STORYTELLING. My family and I moved to Boulder about eight years ago practically on a whim after our plan to relocate abroad fell apart. It ended up being a perfect fit. Turns out, Colorado people are my people—with their love of the great outdoors, eating well and making the most of leisure time. As luck would have it, that same year I started writing for Lifestyle, where I helped share small business owners’ stories in print. Years later, the stars of our overseas dream move magically aligned and we traded pine trees for the sea, setting off for a temporary life in Sydney, Australia. How fortunate were we to put one life on pause to start another. I found new stories to tell, but while the location was picturesque, we truly missed our community and sense of camaraderie among neighbors.

THE AFRO PICK IS A UTILITARIAN TOOL DESIGNED TO MAKE IT FEEL AS IF YOU HAVE FINGERS RUNNING THROUGH YOUR HAIR. The Afro pick comes in many shapes and sizes and can vary from plastic to nylon to steel teeth. Black hair in America has always been policed. From being viewed as nappy and untamed, Black hair has quite a low acceptance rate when it comes to professional settings and societal views as to what is considered standardly beautiful. Owing to the fact that their entire being, from their hair to their skin color ARTICLE KARYSMA HICKS | PHOTOGRAPHY SABRINA HAMMOUDEH
incessantly was underappreciated, many Black Americans felt pressured to alter the state of their natural hair. While many felt and acted on that pressure, there were some that looked at the state of their natural hair as a revolution. In the '50s, Black influencers, such as female jazz singers, realized that they didn’t want to succumb to American beauty standards any longer and started wearing their hair natural and in a ‘cropped’ cut. Once the '60s rolled around, that cropped cut evolved into what we now know as an Afro. The difference between the two is that while the cropped cut was natural, it was more tamed— whereas the Afro is a more spherical shape indicative of one of the many states of natural Black hair. In the '60s leading into the '70s, Black Civil Rights leaders, activists and even artists began to wear their hair in this state as a way to divulge their rebellion—rejecting the notion that Black hair and Black characteristics were something to hide or be ashamed of. Other than being a statement piece to the testament that Black is Beautiful—in every aspect from the variety of skin tones to hair textures, the Afro signifies a movement, a community.

Now having a new definition to being a statement piece, the Afro pick has inspired a group of new-age men with an understanding of the Afro pick’s historical urbanity and a goal to enlighten the hair space community of the essence of the Afro pick—whether whoever fills that space is Black, Asian, White, Latino—you name it. Founders of AfroPick—a custom design company that tells the stories that need to be told through customized Afro picks, Shaquille Walker, Gemille Walker and Zarrius Walker are all frequent users of an Afro pick and one day realized that they all had something in common. Not one of them had a pick lacking design. “The more we talked about it, the more we realized that the pick was much more than a fashion accessory, it is a cultural tool,” says Gemille Walker. “It is a marriage between art and culture.” AfroPick is comprised of storytelling picks that are painted, designed and curated by a plethora of artists from around the world that all share a common mission with AfroPick’s founders—allowing people to wear their identity and share their individuality by using this tool. These picks come in an array of styles, shapes, sizes, and of course, colors—just like we all do. “We are all individuals. We all have our own mission and stories to tell,” says Gemille. “Using the afro pick as a canvas for that has turned out to be a beautiful way to push our mission.” Looked at as a hypothetical, dying form of art, the Walkers wanted to revive the utility of the afro pick. Realizing that although times have changed and fashion statements may have changed—the essence of Black hair has not. To influence people with thick, curly, or coily hair, there was a niche for getting people to use a product that not only was effective for their hair but also made people want to use and represent the product beyond functionality. Whether it is the artistic value, the historic representation or the message behind the brand, AfroPick is a human experience that offers people of color a space to find community.

They figured since the cancer was no longer a factor that they didn’t have to talk about it or think about it. However, suppressing their emotions only lasted temporarily. Now at 25 and having

Using her platform with one other goal in mind, Carley aims to educate listeners about Ewing Sarcoma and other young adult cancer(s). “Young adult cancer is a pressing issue but has never really gotten the same attention or funding that other types of cancer(s) may have. It’s not as sexy and not as cool to be in your 20s and have cancer,” proclaims Carley. “We’ve just seemed to have fallen through the cracks. There’s not a lot of treatment options or a lot of research going on, and that is something I am actively trying to change.” In addition to raising awareness through TX Forever, she also hopes to bring light to The Rutledge Cancer Foundation, founded and owned by Carley's mother. Their family-run foundation focuses prevalently on young adult cancer research and strives to bring less toxic, life-saving therapies to cancer patients. While Carley is incessantly adjusting to her experience with cancer, she is not letting it discourage or stop her from falling short of the footsteps of her family—finding the resources and tools to help others battle their trauma. Whether it is through a podcast, through a cancer research foundation, or a conversation about one of her favorite TV shows, she is sparking conversation—sparking a community.

CHERRY CREEK LIFESTYLE: What made you want to take your art and turn it into a career? DELADIER ALMEIDA: This is something that I have been doing since I was a child. It always came very naturally to me. It was always a goal of mine. CHERRY CREEK LIFESTYLE: Was there an artist that inspired you as a child or was this something that was just of complete aptitude? DELADIER ALMEIDA: Yeah, it was pretty spontaneous. There wasn’t anyone in my family that did anything like this. Sometimes it can be a movie or an image that changes one person’s life. Art changed mine and I just stuck with it throughout my life. I studied architecture and industrial design in Brazil and graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1990. Now, I just paint what I see. The idea is to have a unique view of things so that what I do creates enough interest that people want to have my work as a part of their lives. CHERRY CREEK LIFESTYLE: What is the importance behind people seeing your work specifically? DELADIER ALMEIDA: An artist must have an audience in order for the work to be

influenced. That is very empowering to me. How I want people to be influenced by what I do is part of how I go about forming my vision and my language. It’s important for people to see my work because it is a reflection of the context that I live in.

CHERRY CREEK LIFESTYLE: What kind of experience does a Del Almeida piece tend to give its spectator(s)? DELADIER ALMEIDA: My work is going to affect people based on their history, their interests, their own baggage—you cannot predict how the work is going to be perceived for that reason. You just have to provide enough quality and craftsmanship to best reflect reality. There is going to be a series of aesthetic and language that resonates with someone’s own self-image. CHERRY CREEK LIFESTYLE: In a prior interview, you mentioned that you liked to work “on the edge of your rational mind.” What does that mean and how is it portrayed in your artwork? DELADIER ALMEIDA: The idea is to allow the language of painting to be an ally to my interests and to my way of seeing things; and allow an abstraction to what I’m looking at. I may be looking at a tree, but it’s more than that. You can’t allow yourself to be too rational with everything. It’s a matter of accepting reality but allowing your own inner reality to come in and make its collection of marks. CHERRY CREEK LIFESTYLE: Do you feel as though there is an importance built around the concept of art? How do you feel that it impacts our communities or society on a larger scale? DELADIER ALMEIDA: I think that artists bring attention to aspects of reality that people in their daily, busy lives may not have time to appreciate. In addition to showing people the things that may go unnoticed, we, as in anyone who produces cultural content, are shaping our society by seeing things in a way that it never has. There is room for a more sophisticated, more complex, and more engaged perception of visual reality—an entirely new way of seeing things.

He took the 24-foot trailer and gutted it. Giving her a “shell on” renovation, rebuilding everything from the axles up for it to be fully functioning when off the grid, meaning she has a generator on board to power all coffee equipment. The shell remains original and that’s just about it. The end result reveals a dreamsicle colored trailer that nods to the Wild West inside. Canvas blinds, cowboy and horseshoe motifs, and matte black light fixtures all blend seamlessly together against the peach-colored walls. Light fills the spacious interior where Brandon brews up specialty drinks for customers and friends alike. His very first stop is the Cole Neighborhood community where the trailer sits parked. He has been warmly welcomed by neighbors and passersby with whom he is eager to share his favorite Denver coffee. His chosen coffee is roasted by Middle State in Denver (MiddleStateCoffee.com), who he loves for their flavor and roasting techniques and also for the people behind the beans. “They are a rad bunch of people who are fun and supportive to work with, which is as equally important as the coffee itself,” shares Brandon. “Along with having Middle State on the bar, I will be rotating guest roasters from across the country.” Currently, Brandon serves a range of coffees and teas, including cold brew, cappuccinos, and chai and matcha lattes. With both a loyalty to his favorite roasters as well as a curiosity to incorporate new coffees along his journey, Nowhere Coffee is becoming the capsule for an ever-evolving expedition. “Nowhere is still in its infancy as a business,” Brandon expresses. “So, the itinerary is moment to moment, but I have events around Colorado booked through the fall and plan to take some road trips west and up to the Pacific Northwest this year.” Even though Ramblin’ Rose had to wait a little longer to show off her glossy new veneer, Brandon feels fortunate that he had the time and space to focus all of his energy on the trailer. “If everything wasn’t shut down I would have felt a self-imposed pressure to hurry and get it finished,” Brandon shares. These silver linings of Covid have enlisted gratitude and perspective for those healthy and able to see them. Brandon is no exception, and now that travel restrictions are easing and cities are re-opening he is prepared for those wide-open roads ahead.

T H E R E N E GA D E D E S I G N E R ANNA LAMBIOTTE IS THE NON TRADITIONAL INTERIOR DESIGNER YOU WANT IN YOUR HOME ARTICLE LIVIA HOOSON | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS
THIS ASPEN-BORN MOUNTAIN GIRL NEVER THOUGHT SHE WOULD END UP BEING A CITY DWELLER, BUT THE MILE HIGH CITY HAS BECOME HOME FOR THE INTERIOR DESIGNER, WIFE, AND MOTHER OF THREE FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS. Anna began her design pursuits in Lake Tahoe with the design firm Studio Lambiotte (StudioLambiotte.com), after getting recognized for the distinct aesthetic of her own home. Recognized by friends in the industry, she started taking on clients, bringing her natural talent to each space she touched. This self-proclaimed ‘renegade designer’ is proving that with intuition, intelligence and creativity, who needs formal training to succeed? Anna has been a designer for 15 years now gaining experience in the industry through hands-on and independent projects. She has never worked for a design firm or studied design in school. What she does have is a BA in Art History and an MBA from the Darden School of Business, allowing her unique balance of analytical and creative prowess to soar. Between her and her three female employees, Studio Lambiotte works with homeowners as well as real estate and commercial developers to conceptualize and create incredible spaces both in urban and mountain locales across the state. Her aesthetic is based on a neutral palette using classic concepts while balancing contemporary ideas with vintage pieces. She also celebrates the natural light a structure has within and enjoys connecting the outdoors to the in while adding bits of color and textures to an overall serene space. “A space should feel comfortable and grounded, and then you can add a pop of color here or a crazy lamp over there,” says Anna. “I want homeowners to walk into a room and feel good, and oftentimes that means you have to edit.” She runs her business in a very collaborative way, working closely with architects, builders, and the client in order to achieve the same goal, which might not always be an easy process, but nonetheless achieves gorgeous results.
THIS DESIGNER'S 7 FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT DENVER 1. HOMEBODY - I always want everything in this store—it’s dangerous. 2. MODERN NOMAD - An amazing store that celebrates local/small businesses. I buy most of my runners here and they have fantastic vintage pieces. 3. BLOOM - I’m a sucker for monthly orchids (and all things green) and amazing ball candles. 4. BRONCOS AT MILE HIGH - It's my happy place. 5. AMY ELAINE SKINCARE - This woman is a magician and the most chill lady you can share an hour with. 6. MOVEMENT IS KEY TO MY WELL BEING, AND THESE PEOPLE SAVE ME: The Studio - Sara Fox; Soul Cycle Dylan Hurwich; Fierce45 - Erica & V 7. EASY ACCESS TO THE HIGH COUNTRY, forever and always.
Although life in Denver is far different from the mountains, she values the people here for their friendliness and the immense support from the local community. “People lift each other up here, they want you to succeed! Specifically with women business owners in Denver, from the design studios to the showrooms,” shares Anna. “It’s a fun and exciting time to be creating spaces here in in Denver. I feel very fortunate.” CityLifestyle.com/CherryCreek
