Each piece is specially made to withstand the harsh Colorado elements with an emphasis on choosing the most optimal, lasting and visually appealing materials. The furniture incorporates powder-coated aluminum and steel, Sunbrella and marine-grade fabrics and cushions, all-weather resin weaves, sustainable woods and more, while kitchens are made of stainless steel environmentally friendly powder-coating techniques. Durability, fade- and water-resistance and easy maintenance reign supreme, and Micheline notes that Creative Living designs are made to serve homeowners for years to come. “We’ve seen our clients over the past year looking to create spaces that can help them get outside of the four walls of their house while still truly feeling like they’re at home,” Micheline says. Trends in outdoor living that have accelerated and continued to grow over the past year? Larger lounge areas to help homeowners escape the stresses of the day and connect with loved ones with added elements such as cozy fire pits or tranquil fountains. Expanded modern entertainment kitchens with more appliances and gadgets, such as pizza ovens, flat-top grills and kegerators. DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNETEENTH IS THE OLDEST KNOWN HOLIDAY THAT COMMEMORATES THE END OF SLAVERY IN THE U.S.? Like most of Black history, this triumphant event is not taught in schools. Last year, the holiday received more recognition, with cities and states making it an official holiday.

FOR A MINI-HISTORY LESSON: + Not all enslaved people were freed when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863. + The Civil War ended in the summer of 1865.

THIS IS WHAT FREEDOM LOOKS LIKE

+ Union General Gordon Granger and his troops traveled to Galveston, Texas, to announce “all slaves are free” on June 19. + Dating back to 1953, Denver’s Juneteenth celebration chock full of food, musical acts, local businesses, and more have taken place in the historic Five Points neighborhood. + In 2004, Juneteenth was recognized as a ceremonial holiday in Colorado. Norman Harris, a fifth-generation Denverite, is known around the city for the rejuvenation of the Juneteenth Music Festival (JMF) as the executive director. “I participated as a youth when it was at its prominence.” He also experienced the celebration when it wasn’t doing the best, and that’s when he decided to take it on—not to mention his understanding of his legacy. To this 44-year-old Black man, Juneteenth means freedom, and “it’s about our community coming together to understand its past to establish stronger current practices to promote better future outcomes.”

One way of moving in that direction is by keeping the multi-faceted Black experience at the forefront of this celebration—a priority for Norman since 2012. The city’s cultural landscape has changed since 2012, thus empowering Blacks to share their stories through various media. One prominent example is Jasmine Wiley, creator of Narkita Gold Studio’s “Black in Denver” series. In essence, it is a visual ethnogra-

THINGS ART AND FASHION AND HOW SHE SITS COMFORTABLY AT THE INTERSECTION OF BOTH AVENUES. For this artist and designer, it’s about being a part of a continuum that deepens the connection between the art and the audience. While people often ask her to choose between art and fashion, she believes it’s comparable to asking if you prefer eating or breathing— they are both essential. In our conversation with CarolAnn, she delves into her inspiration, design process and legacy. CONTINUED >

THE ADVENTURE HUB GET OUTFIT FOR SUMMER RECREATION WITH DENVER’S CONFLUENCE KAYAK & SKI ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | June 2021

JON KAHN’S LIGHT-BULB MOMENT—WHEN HE REALIZED THAT KAYAKING AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURING WOULD BE LIFELONG PASSIONS THAT HE WOULD PURSUE—CAME AT THE AGE OF 11 ON A FAMILY RAFTING TRIP ON THE SAN JUAN RIVER. A lot has happened for Jon since then, from working as a rafting guide and kayaking instructor to earning a degree in Chemistry. But they all culminated in the founding of Confluence Kayak & Ski, a downtown mainstay that has been serving the Denver community for more than 25 years. “After moving back to Denver in 1994, I decided to start a kayaking school,” says Jon, owner of Confluence Kayak & Ski. “At the time, the Confluence Park boat chutes had just been rebuilt and had really improved kayaking on the South Platte River. It seemed like a great opportunity to open a kayaking and outdoor recreation shop, and so a partner and I took the leap.” Today, Confluence Kayak & Ski shares the sport of kayaking with Denverites and visitors alike. The business has also expanded to be a comprehensive adventure hub, equipping eager participants with gear and rentals for aquatic fun such as stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), rafting and tubing. If you want to stay dry while exploring Denver, they also rent bikes and Onewheel electric skateboards. In the winter months, the shop converts to a full-service Alpine and backcountry ski shop. “I think there is a lot of pent-up demand for people to get outside and to travel this summer,” Jon says. “We are excited to see visitors coming to Denver again to enjoy the amazing access to so many outdoor activities that we have.”

THE BEST SUMMER COCKTAILS TO SHAKE THIS SEASON

THIRST QUENCHERS

+ .25 ounces Grapefruit + .5 ounces Rhubarb + .75 ounces Lemon + 1 ounce Simple + Dash Cardamom + 1 Egg White or Aquafaba + 1.5 ounces Suerte Reposado The name of this cocktail is derived from our favorite place to get fresh rhubarb, Ollin Farms in Longmont. To make this cocktail, start by prepping all ingredients. Make the simple by combining equal parts by volume hot water and sugar, stirring until dissolved (allow to cool before using). Juice a grapefruit and lemon by hand, and run rhubarb stalks through a juicer. Next, combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker WITHOUT ice. Shake hard for 10 seconds, allowing the egg white to incorporate with the other ingredients, which will create a foam. Add ice and shake again to chill. Strain into a coupe glass and enjoy!

+ 3-4 Slices of Green Apple + 6-8 Mint Leaves + 4-6 Spinach Leaves + .75 ounces Lemon + .75 ounces Simple + 1.5 ounces Spirit of Choice We’ve tried this drink with so many different spirits and just can’t decide on our favorite, so we like to leave it open to interpretation. To make, add apple, mint, spinach, lemon, and simple into a cocktail shaker (Make sure you’re using fresh lemon!) and muddle until the apples are pulp. Don’t be scared about the spinach— it doesn’t have a huge effect on the flavor but makes it a beautiful vibrant green color. Next, add ice and spirit and shake. Finally, double strain (with a Hawthorne strainer and fine mesh strainer to catch small bits of pulp) over fresh ice and enjoy!
