B U S I N E S S E S
Katerina Jeng CO-FOUNDER AND STRATEGIC DIRECTOR AT SPECTACLE
CR: How did you get started in marketing and what led you to Spectacle? KJ: I fell into marketing after graduating early from Cornell University with degrees in English and music. My first job out of school was marketing for Yahoo and Flickr, and while I gained necessary experience working in tech, I realized I did not fit into the corporate world...I was also experiencing my own identity journey and discovering what it means to be a queer, first-generation, FilipinaTaiwanese-American woman. Making the decision to become my own boss was pretty easy. Once I founded Spectacle, the focus on representation and inclusion in marketing came organically. I’ve always been passionate about cultivating a community for people who don’t thrive under dominant systems of power, and when the pandemic and the largest racial uprising of our generation hit in 2020, there was a collective awakening to the importance of this, too. Since then, we’ve taken off. CR: At Spectacle, you focus on inclusive marketing. What does that mean to you? KJ: Inclusive marketing means representing people of diverse races, gender identities, classes, sexual orientations, ages, abilities, and perspectives; and making them feel recognized and validated through content and campaigns. This includes being at the forefront of ever-evolving inclusive language, visually showcasing people of all walks of life, understanding our current socio/political/ economic landscape, partnering with people of marginalized groups, and most importantly, ensuring inclusive values are at the heart of a brand, and that organizations are taking concrete action towards collective liberation. CR: What’s something people don’t know about you? KJ: I am weird! As I learn to shed my people-pleasing tendencies, I find I have less and less tolerance for code-switching and “performing” the person I think I should be. When I feel safe around someone, I’m silly, playful and wild. As someone who works in media, I think it’s crucial to remember that what you see is a projection of what people and companies want you to see. While I strive to be as open and vulnerable as I can online, you simply can’t capture the weirdness and multiplicity of a person in an Instagram post. CONTINUED >

Anuschka Pashel FOUNDER OF BLOOM BY ANUSCHKA
CR: Tell us about your entrepreneurial journey. AP: I started Bloom out of my garage when I first came to Denver in 1999. While I'd worked in studios and workshops prior, this was my first business. I had a creative vision to bring everything beautiful and wonderful together in one place. When I had the opportunity to add a retail location, I worked hard to bring it to life. I bought from all over the world—candles
from
Morocco,
pillows
from
Uzbekistan, jewelry from India—so that people in Denver could have a truly unique and beautiful environment. I started designing my own jewelry for the shop. Now, I'm starting to take up painting, so who knows what will be next. CR: What’s something most people don’t know about you? AP: Before I met my husband, I was first friends with my mother-in-law. She made gorgeous pottery that I wanted for my shop. CR: What are you working on now? AP: We’re moving into a gorgeous new space in Cherry Creek North, just over on Second Avenue and Steele Street. There’s a lot of work that will have to be done, but once everything is set, it’s going to be stunning. We’re hoping to open our doors at the end of October.

Amy K. Wright OWNER AND FOUNDER OF AMY K WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY/TELL IT WELL GREETING CARDS
CR: Why did you add cards to your business? AKW: When I first started my business, I wanted to provide photography services, and I was passionate about creating a product that could provide a tangible way for me to create good in the world. In 2016, Tell it Well Photo Greeting Cards was created with the mission of helping other female entrepreneurs around the world through small business micro-loans. A percentage of every card purchase goes to provide small business loans to women in poverty in the US and around the world through the Whole Planet Foundation. It has been a dream come true for me to share my art through my cards and provide a way for people to connect through the act of giving and receiving a handwritten note. CR: What makes the perfect photograph? AKW: This quote from photographer Paul Caponigro sums it up: “It's one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it's another to make a portrait of who they are.” CR: What motivates you? AKW: My passion to empower other business owners to tell their story well through beautiful, authentic images that reflect their spirit and personality, engage their customers and grow their business is the heart of what motivates me.

Deviree Vallejo REAL ESTATE ADVISOR AT LIV SOTHEBY INTERNATIONAL REALTY
CR: What’s your greatest accomplishment? DV: I have been a top producing real estate agent in the Denver market for many years now, which was a goal from the day that I became licensed. The majority of my business is from referrals, which is extremely important to me because it means I am providing a positive enough experience to my clients that they continue to refer me to their friends, families and co-workers. On a side hustle note, my development partners and I currently have about 200 units in planning or under construction, ranging from townhomes to an extended stay hotel. Development has always been a strong interest of mine. CR: What would your dream home look like? Where would it be located? DV: My dream home will be in close proximity to both mountains and water, so we have many options for outdoor activity. I want to own acreage for my kids and dogs to run around as well as accommodating my massive vegetable garden and my desire for more animals. The actual house isn’t as important for me as the location. I can appreciate many different architectural styles and types of homes. CR: How will you know you’ve made it in life? DV: I look at it as a daily occurrence and always ask if I am being the best version of myself. Hopefully, I say yes more than no. I’m a work in progress but the goal is to always be improving. ABI instead of ABC is way more important in my book. 38

It was built specifically to showcase the talents of cocktail whiz Nicole Lebedevitch, and the drinks and space converge so beautifully that Forget Me Not has become an instant classic.
SWANKY COCKTAIL LOUNGES TEND TO HAVE A FEW THINGS IN COMMON. They’re posh, yes, but they also seem to favor dark and masculine; trying to capture that shadowy speakeasy feel. That’s what makes Forget Me Not so unexpectedly delightful. It’s equally—if not more—luxurious than that boys’ club vibe, but bright, cheery and filled with elegant feminine energy. It also just might be serving the best drinks in the city. Forget Me Not opened in early spring, following a three-year renovation of a former flower shop on Clayton Street. Its oversized purple leather bar stools, long red velvet banquettes and rose gold feathered chandelier are arguably just as lovely as the blooms that used to occupy the room. It was built specifically to showcase the talents of cocktail whiz Nicole Lebedevitch, and the drinks and space converge so beautifully that Forget Me Not has become an instant classic. It helps that there’s a spacious, picket fence-perimetered patio, a gorgeous floral mural, that stunning interior space, and an eclectic food menu, but what you’re coming back for are the drinks. Each is better than the last, and you’ll have a hard time choosing between the house-favorite La Pina with blanco tequila, smoked pineapple, cucumber and jalapeño, and the boozier Come Clean, a blend of aloe liqueur, vodka, maraschino and rhubarb bitters. The non-alcoholic Green Machine— Seedlip, cucumber and salted lemon—is just as carefully created. If you need guidance—and you will, because again, everything just sounds so good—the main cocktails are helpfully divided up into categories ranging from Refreshing to Something to Sip On to Citrus and Spice. Or you can entrust the talented bartenders to make you something of their choosing. Bigger groups can share the punchy large-format cocktails, which are a lot of fun and a lot of drink. You really can’t go wrong no matter how or what you order. It’s just that kind of place. When you need a bite to wash down your drink, you’ve got some options. The cheese and salumi boards are packed with both local and international creations, and they’re rounded out with addictive fruit compote and violet mustard. There’s also a healthy selection of tinned fish, caviar and, depending on the night, oysters, or a line-up of small plates running the gamut from Marcona almonds and ultrafresh crudité, to, well, a hot dog and lobster roll. Forget Me Not is surprising in the best possible way. It’s blazing its own dazzling, sunny trail in Cherry Creek, proving that lounges don’t have to be dark to be luxe, or masculine to be impressive. It’s a breath of fresh air, made even better by that breath coming with a side of incredible cocktails. ForgetMeNotDenver.com

She’d hide away in her detailed structures, studying the grasses and flowers surrounding her to escape from reality. Forever fascinated by nature’s detail, Elisabeth still reflects this inspiration in her collages, paintings and art installations today. Elisabeth sells three-dimensional succulent mandalas on her online store, but her collages focus more on untouchable nature—space, the deep ocean and mountain peaks—with leaves and colorful flowers sprinkled throughout. Collaging was a side-hustle while Elisabeth worked at Anthropologie for five years after graduating from the University of Colorado Boulder in oil painting. She focuses more on this medium since leaving the clothing store, known for their elaborate, hand-made window and store displays, at the start of the pandemic.

In 2016, Elisabeth started completing 200 hours of yoga teacher training and developing her Visual Vinyasa collage workshops that instill yogic principles through visual art. “When I started collaging, I realized how creatively freeing and meditative it was,” Elisabeth says. "I thought, if I can create a world within the boundaries of this page, I have the ability to do the same type of creation within my life." Motivated by the same childhood desire to surround herself and the built world with natural imagery, Elisabeth collaged to embolden herself to paint abstractly and create her physical art installations. She started offering workshops in the Denver area and on Zoom, wanting to offer the same sense of encouragement to others. She opens workshops with a yoga review and how it applies to the private group, like a small business or bridal party, she workshops with. In Sanskrit, “Vinyasa” translates to “place in a special way.” As yoga has key principles of mindfulness and intention, so does collaging, allowing creatives to focus on the present moment and meditate while crafting an aesthetically pleasing composition. “Collage is such an accessible art form,” Elisabeth says. “My favorite part is seeing people have those creative revelations.” She prompts private Visual Vinyasa participants with unique themes or ideas to spark inspiration, like life transitions or intentions for the following year. Then participants choose their subject matter and take home their art to remind them of their manifested intentions. Elisabeth has also held public collaging workshops at yoga studios and taprooms like Improper City in Denver. When Elisabeth collages on her own in her home’s spare room studio, she starts by printing out photos taken on her phone or cutting out those in beautiful magazines and coffee table books she often buys from estate sales. Elisabeth then categorizes images by color and size. When inspiration hits, she chooses photos from her natural, feminine image archive and arranges them to portray the look she’s going for.

"I thought, if I can create a world within the boundaries of this page, I have the ability to do the same type of creation within my life." As businesses anticipate the world reopening after the pandemic, Elisabeth ramps up her installation art piece production for the world outside her garage, where she paints and works with bulkier, larger materials. She recently constructed light-up clouds made from paper lanterns and cotton stuffing in one of Fort Greene Bar’s rooms in Denver. Elisabeth plans to continue offering collaging workshops to help people realize their creative power and take a moment to breathe during their busy days. ElisabethGraceArt.com

TO EXPERIENCE MOUNTAIN LAVISHNESS AT ITS FINEST, CONSIDER A STAY AT THE LITTLE NELL, ASPEN’S ONLY 5-STAR, 5-DIAMOND, SKI-IN/SKI-OUT HOTEL ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN
ASPEN IS BREATHTAKING DURING ANY SEASON AND ALWAYS ENDLESSLY BURSTING WITH ACTIVITIES REGARDLESS OF WEATHER. Winter has the obvious ski and snowboard options while summer beckons Maroon Bells hiking. Did you know they are the most photographed mountains in the country? The month of October makes for a gorgeous drive on Independence Pass (which typically closes around Halloween, weather pending) with its striking colorful foliage juxtaposed against the snow-capped mountains. Additional seasonal favorites include biking, golf and horseback riding. A Relais & Châteaux resort, The Little Nell is a place that easily exceeds sky-high expectations—every small touch is covered. Its living room and lobby have undergone a recent transformation by acclaimed architect and interior design firm Luis Bustamante of Spain, which brought in stunning millwork for the walls, fireplace and ceiling, new furniture, carpeting, sconces and then some. Think symmetrical and harmonic proportions. Geometric design elements are at the forefront of the refresh. Luis is also a sculptor and painter and some of his own artwork adorns the hotel’s walls on either side of the wood-burning fireplace. The 92-room ultra-luxe accommodations are undoubtedly high-end yet undeniably cozy, making you feel right at home once you settle in. From the eco-friendly wooden key cards to the plants in the rooms (and orchids in the bathroom) to the turndown service complete with bedside slippers and a carafe of water to quench mid-night thirst, every aspect is well thought out. Four-legged friends are welcomed—and pampered—with gourmet treats; the hotel even designed a Puppy Jet Lag Kit specifically made to help dogs adjust to its high altitude. Of course, there’s also a 5-star concierge service always at your fingertips, led by a Les Clefs d’Or-certified chef concierge, to help wrangle any-sized task, including booking appointments and reservations, suggesting activities and arranging transportation. Rooms and junior suites were renovated a few years ago by New York-based luxury firm Champalimaud Design, featuring bespoke floor plans and gas log fireplaces, many with their own private balconies. With lodging ranging from guest rooms to suites to luxury residences managed by the hotel’s team, plus the Silver Queen Gondola, hiking trails, haute couture and world-class dining just steps out its door,

eat + drink
EAT & DRINK Dine outside on the patio at Ajax Tavern, located right at the base of the gondola, and soak in the majestic mountainside while people (and animal) watching. Catch Dinner + A Movie events while weather permits, where you can dine under a tent, watching a film on a pop-up big screen with the mountains, moon and stars for a backdrop. Order off the menu or reserve a special Veuve Clicquot package for $200+ with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label and two lobster rolls. For breakfast, lunch, an afternoon cocktail or dinner, there’s Element 47, specializing in seasonally inspired dishes and locally sourced fruits and vegetables. Take a dip in the outdoor heated pool or hot tub. As the day goes on, drop by The Wine Bar, inspired by Willi’s Wine Bar in Paris, Corkbuzz in New York City and Wally’s in Beverly Hills, to take part in its Coravin Wine Challenge, where you’ll summon your inner sommelier while being led through a blind wine tasting journey as you listen to DJs spinning vinyl records. Sip your way through a deliciously educational experience, learning how to see, smell and identify unique characteristics of four different wines—two red and two white. The tasting includes a cheese board that’s perfectly paired with your wine selection to help you determine if your glass is filled with pinot noir, malbec, merlot or cabernet sauvignon.
