AROUND TOWN Ken Gart, chairman of RPM Events Group, said the move would allow organizers to put on “one great race instead of two average ones.” The races, which are expected to attract 20 teams, will be held August 22-25 at locations yet to be determined. Organizers see the opportunity to create a women’s race with international impact. In the past, the women were overshadowed by the men in races that were run the same day. Gart said next year’s prize money of $75,000 would be $5,000 more than the purse for the men’s races this year. The women’s purse this year was only $20,000. “We love men’s cycling,” Gart says. “We’re proud

IMAGINE A DINNER PARTY THAT STARTS WHEN YOU ARE GREETED WITH A GORGEOUS WELCOME COCKTAIL. You mingle with fellow guests while grazing on charcuterie before taking a seat and soaking up the magic of a table set with custom dinnerware, organic linen, glowing candles, flower-filled vases and calligraphy place cards on handmade paper. Your evening progresses, with everyone nibbling on homemade bread and passing decanters of wine paired perfectly with the seasonally and locally sourced menu while sharing heartfelt toasts across the table. Your evening culminates with a signature dessert and steaming espresso. Luxury dinner parties like this could be catered and sourced from multiple vendors, but Feast, founded by Hannah Howard, provides it all (down to washing the dishes), with a level of care and connection that goes beyond table settings and food. Building on her background as a creative director and stylist, Hannah first started Ink & Root, a calligraphy company March of 2016 after moving to Denver with her husband, DJ. Soon, this self-taught, left-handed

together through her unique and organic art at calligraphy workshops. Her next evolution? In October of 2018, she launched Feast, with the help of her business partner Carsyn Bock. “Feast is about giving each other access to the deeper parts of our lives by sharing, passing, interacting and ‘scooching’ a little closer to one another,” Hannah explains. The laidback modern vibe that each Feast exudes is a reflection of Hannah’s killer personal style, which she describes as “slightly modern in the midst of a jungle with a nod to Morocco.” To capture her vision, Hannah worked with designers all over the world to create each stylish element of a Feast. Consider it a sneak peek into what an intimate dinner party at Hannah’s house would be like, but with a personal chef, stylists/servers and a photographer to capture Insta-worthy shots.

“We set our clients up for hosting the most dreamy dinner party, but to be able to actually take part in the magic of the night,” explains Hannah. “When you’re hosting a dinner party by yourself, it’s impossible to truly enjoy it to its fullest because you are constantly working and anticipating other’s needs. We want to give our clients the delight of hosting, without the logistics and hassle of it all. “Our timing, our placement of everything on the table, our incredible food, unique cocktails and our ability to create a mood with a beautifully created scene sets us apart,” she continues. “Details are what we are built upon. We do nothing without care and intention.” For Hannah, a Louisiana native, gathering around a table and sharing a meal is a tradition deeply rooted in her childhood. “I came from a traditional Southern family who always ate dinner together,” she says. “Every Sunday, we ate lunch at my Granny’s, who is my absolute role model and hero in the kitchen and in life itself.” And Sunday lunches at Granny’s were truly feasts, with Granny teaching Hannah all the finest elements of being a gracious host. “Homemade everything; five different vegetable sides from the garden, in traditional Southern form; at least two different meats; homemade rolls; and after it was all said and done and no one could fit in another bite, she served homemade dessert always followed by coffee,” she fondly recalls.

“FEAST IS ABOUT GIVING EACH OTHER ACCESS TO THE DEEPER PARTS OF OUR LIVES BY SHARING, PASSING, INTERACTING AND ‘SCOOCHING’ A LITTLE CLOSER TO ONE ANOTHER.”

While Louisiana will always be home for Hannah and her husband, right after they got married, they decided they wanted to shake things up and experience new things, as well as live in a place that actually had four seasons. Since moving to Denver, it has stolen their hearts. Thanks to Feast, Hannah continues to teach people the power of gathering around a table, instilled in her by her Granny years ago. “The beautiful and magical setting our company provides is simply a way to foster that communal concept, but the heart behind Feast is carried long after the actual event,” says Hannah. “Everyone has to eat, so why not create a beautiful space and environment to do it together?”

JOY AND LOVE ABOUND IN ARTIST WILL DAY'S BOULDER STUDIO.

IMAGINE THAT LAYING BEFORE YOUR FEET IS A MASSIVE WHITE CANVAS, STRETCHING OUT SEVERAL YARDS FROM WHERE YOU STAND IN EITHER DIRECTION. Now imagine being charged with the heady responsibility of transforming that canvas into nothing short of a reflection of your truest self: your very soul. For some of us, we feel the thrill of possibility; the raw potential of what could be. For others of us (ahem, me): we’re already sweating. The thought can be almost paralyzing; the fear and insecurity crippling. For abstract artist Will Day, however, the two emotions co-exist in the creation of every new canvas and therein lies the beauty. Will is known for his bold, large-scale works swathed in profound colors and energetic shapes. Even when speaking over the phone, he exudes joy and a warm intensity, often pausing mid-sentence to bellow a laugh or exclamation. Hammering at times pounds loudly in the background, and Will explains that he is preparing a canvas for his new series, Wonder. “It’s all based on the idea: I wonder if we all had the chance to let go and work from our hearts, what could we create?” Will muses. The idea is born out of two themes dearest to Will’s heart: authentic self-revelation and a desire to connect with others on their own creative journey. It seems clear that Will is very much equal parts doer and dreamer, an artist who approaches all he does with passion and gusto. Remember that blank canvas? Will begins each new work by rolling a canvas out onto the floor, and while he is known for working pri-

marily in oil and acrylic, he admits to using anything he has on hand to play with the color and texture of his canvases—even walking across them as he creates. Day shares that it's all about letting go, being in the moment and bringing forth clarity from the chaos. “It’s about opening yourself up to the world. It’s scary; it’s vulnerable. But I know that if I just show up, my art will represent me,” Will says. “And there’s always a thread of joy and love.”

That thread isn’t limited to Will's artwork—it’s also beautifully apparent in his bright Boulder studio. He describes the space with emotion as an environment that transformed his art and taught him to let go. "I’m in a space that’s bigger than me,” Will explains. “Physically, yes. It’s a large space for large works of art. But its also a space where I’m free to create. It redefined my voice. Because I don’t just paint—I have to paint. I have to be in my studio. It is essential to my core and my well being as a creative person.” Not surprisingly, Will’s journey as an artist began long before he moved to Colorado. While Will discovered a passion for creating at an early age, he and his wife started out in New York City with successful careers on Wall Street. On September 11th, 2001, however, everything changed. Will’s wife had been working on the 78th floor of the South Tower but had not yet arrived to work when the towers were hit. Everyone on her floor lost their lives. “My wife survived, but it was a game changer for our relationship with the world,” says Will. “It scared us, but my wife’s story is one of resilience.” For Will, it prompted a shift that led him to pursue a career in architecture, and eventually, brought him back to painting. He credits his family for their steady support throughout his artistic journey. “They give me courage. They remind me that we are all in this to guide and support one another. Financially, spiritually, emotionally… they give me faith. Faith and belief that we can do something unique and different,” Will says. “They are my soundboard for reality.” It’s a soundboard that rings true, as Will continues to create and inspire others on their own journey. Will opens up the studio regularly to the Boulder community, hosting parties, yoga classes, poetry readings and at times teaching classes himself. He also works with the Boulder Prep School and the Parlando School of Music, helping children who have faced significant challenges connect with their hearts and express themselves through art. “With art, there’s room for everyone. It’s not about million-dollar paintings and making it big. Not that those things are bad!” Will laughs. “But I don’t do it to please people. It’s about making art that is one-of-a-kind, and most importantly, true to myself. It’s about touching people on their own journey and allowing them to find their creative spirit. I want my art to draw people in and take them somewhere. Because art connects us all.”

“NOW I COULD SEE DENVER LOOMING AHEAD OF ME LIKE THE PROMISED LAND, WAY OUT THERE BENEATH THE STARS…” -JACK KEROUAC, ON THE ROAD

IN THE LATE ‘50S AND EARLY ‘60S, ANYONE WITH THEIR FINGER ON THE PULSE OF AMERICAN ART AND CULTURE WAS FAMILIAR WITH DENVER AS ONE OF THE MAIN AXES OF JACK KEROUAC’S ROAD-TRIPPING ADVENTURES MEMORIALIZED IN ON THE ROAD. Kerouac and his Beat friends loved Denver, and many of them regularly patronized places like El Chapultepec and My Brother’s Bar. Nearly 60 years later, Denver has earned its place as a beacon of the arts in the Rockies (watch out, Santa Fe!), as that “Promised land, way out there beneath the stars.” While it is not as obvious as New York City or Chicago and not as loud as Miami or Los Angeles, Denver is a significant player in American arts and culture, and it is evolving even as you read this article. This city has been undergoing its renaissance for some years now, and art is at the core of Denver’s new identity as one of the country’s most coveted cities to visit and live in. Artists are responsible for the existence of RiNo and the resurgence of neighborhoods like Berkeley, and much of the content of those “Things to do in Denver” lists is arts-centric—it is no wonder that Meow Wolf chose Denver as its third location! There are several calendar squares designated for the arts, such as First Fridays, September’s CRUSH WALLS and November’s Denver Art Week. But the following three artists are reminders that Denver is consistently enlivened by its art.
