lum Sage Flowers, located in the Highlands neighborhood, is a Denver gem. Founded in 2005 by current owner, Erin Hornstein, the Plum Sage team has grown to include Elizabeth Gotsdiner who has worked

with flowers for over 14 years, and Mallory Hight, a Boulder local who grew up taking care of flowers sold at her familyâ€™s hardware store. Put together, the team offers an abundance of energy, personality, and creativity, all of which is palpable upon stepping into the store.

The shop specializes in wedding arrangements but will create pieces for just about anything - from corporate gatherings to a simple accent for your dinner table. Plum Sage also offers quarterly floral arranging classes, and Lifestyle had the privilege of attending one which focused on late-autumn and winter arrangements. The class was a complete delight. Upon entering we were greeted by Wesley, the store’s new shop puppy who is just learning to handle his new-found customer-relation responsibilities. The smells of wine and fresh cheese wafted through the air, and the space was filled with the laughter of boisterous women, mainly brides-to-be, or women looking for an activity to jazz up a weekday night. Everyone, including myself, was happy to be there. Both the fall and the winter arrangements included fresh and very carefully chosen ingredients. For the fall arrangement, Plum Sage supplied carolina sapphire, nandina foliage, and bay leaf, along with Combo roses for the focal blooms, disbud mums accent blooms, and dried pasta wheat to add a bit of texture to the piece. The winter arrangement used cedar, boxwood, and carolina sapphire for the foliage element of the arrangement, O’Hara garden roses for the focal blooms, parrot tulips for accent blooms, and cotton to create some texture. It’s a testament both to the beauty of nature and the expertise behind the Plum Sage team that, despite our fumblings, all of the resulting arrangements were gorgeous. • Seek out fresh foliage/ blooms, either from browsing through your neighborhood flower shop, or taking a walk with a pair of clippers through a nearby park

for pretty foliage. When shopping, look for upright (i.e. non-droopy) healthy blooms without bruising, and green stems without brown or mildew (a sign of age). • Find a vessel you love. A good place to look for containers is Ikea, West Elm or a craft store.

• Buy some floral foam to fill your vessel and cut the foam to size with a knife

edge. (You can purchase floral foam at Michaels or from Amazon.) Note: When you soak the foam, fill your sink with water and let the foam float on top. Allow it to slowly sink into the water and fill on it's own. This will allow the foam to soak entirely and prevent dry pockets from forming inside. • For design, try using foliage to first fill in your vessel and conceal the flower foam. Play with texture, draping and symmetry. There are no rules! Just enjoy the process. Note: Try not to rearrange pieces too much once you have inserted them into the foam... the more holes the foam has in it, the weaker it will become and you will lose the "anchor". • Next, add your large, "focal" blooms. These are the blooms that are the "centerpiece" of your arrangement. As with the foliage, cut bloom stems at a diagonal angle, clean off about 1/2 to 1" of the stem, and insert it into foam. If you are using roses, insert the stem into the foam quickly after you trim the stem, otherwise the stem will begin to "scab," and the bloom will have a difficult time taking up water. • After you've added the primary blooms, go ahead and add your accent blooms! Again, the same process applies when trimming the stems/inserting blooms into the foam. Place these in the negative space between your focal blooms. • If you would like, you can finish by adding texture to your piece! For the fall arrangements, we added texture with dried wheat, and for the winter arrangements, we added some texture with cotton stems. We also added gourds that worked with the respective color schemes. We simply used a wooden pick to anchor the gourd into the edge of the foam/vessel. • You're all set! Add a little bit of water daily to keep your arrangement as fresh as possible, and enjoy!

Tucking under edges and creasing firmly gives your package a nice sharp edge and polished look.

Once your sides are in place, it's time to cut your ribbon. We keep it simple here, too - no bows or frills just a flat angled edge, taped down.

Double-sided tape is one trick that we use at Alpine Modern to make our packages have a seamless elegance.

Folding in the sides is an important step that takes a minute to finesse— don't rush this. Hug the paper so it's snug to the box, and make a sharp crease. Use the double-sided tape to make everything lay nice and flat.

Just where the ribbon edges meet we add an Alpine Modern sticker to complete the package. If you're wrapping at home, consider finding some fun stickers to add a little whimsey to your gift wrapping.
