Don’t Be A Gaper! A

s ski resorts are now preparing to open, many of Colorado’s new transplants are eager to get out and enjoy all the incredible skiing and boarding that Colorado has to offer. While many new residents have been skiing for years, thousands will be hitting the hill for the first time. You may be asking yourself, “What is a gaper”? Although there is no official definition of the word in Webster’s Dictionary, a gaper could be described as someone who is in over their head, and / or is lacking on-mountain etiquette. I can speak first hand, because I was once a gaper myself. Even though they look warm, I found out quickly back in 1993, that Starter jackets were not meant for sub-zero temperatures. Just because you might be a beginner, doesn’t mean you have to be a gaper. Dressing for the elements will definitely bring much more enjoyment to your day on the mountain.]

Like many adventure sports, you get what you pay for. If you go with the knock off brands, you are going to be in for a long, cold winter. Invest in the right gear from the start. While you might be on your rear for the first few months, at least you’ll be dry and warm. High quality outerwear (Patagonia, Arcteryx, Marmot) will be used for many seasons to come. I’ve been wearing the same Patagonia Capilene base layer for the last ten seasons. I pretty much live in it from mid-October until Mother’s Day. If you are on a budget, there are some killer deals at the local consignment stores around town. HELMETS

I’ll admit it, up until the late 90’s, early 2000’s, helmets on the mountain were still perceived as lame. Fortunately, the evolution of protecting our dome is now common sense. Buy a helmet folks. You will charge so much harder and be more confident once you do. Additionally, your head will never have felt so warm on a cold day.I love the Bern helmets; stylish, lightweight, and durable. GOGGLES

Once again, the technology of goggles has advanced light years over the last decade. Stay away from the amber lense Scott goggles that your dad bought in 1992. Having clear vision on the slopes is paramount. I suggest Zeal for the quality, and for the locally owned aspect The only thing better than a good day on the hill is a good Apres ski with friends and family. As a former bartender in Vail, I can say that gaper-ish behavior is not just limited to the trail. If you are the loudest guy at the bar, bragging about how many “double blacks” you skied, you are entering into gaper-ville. Be safe, have fun, and don’t be a gaper!

T

his time of year, I’m restless. A trip to the mountains—only 45 minutes to the sleepy mining town of Silver Plume—bridges the gap between

crisp fall weather and the impending cooler air at the base of the Rockies. I’m not a bartender. Six months ago, I would have scoffed at the idea of spending so much time at a bar. I am, however, an observer of place. Place is deeply felt, and like a meter or a gauge, I felt an attachment to the space that we call Bread Bar. And it wasn’t just me. Three other people grew an attachment to Silver Plume, and when the bar—a former mining supply store, then bakery, then bitters tasting room—went up for sale, we joked about it. The fact is, it was so much more than that. It was a dream for all of us in our own ways. Silver Plume is a sleepy whistle-stop, pleasantly eerie, a place where you creep down the roads slowly, out of some inexplicable, quiet respect for forgotten things. It is also magical, spirited with a tangible sense of history, rows of Western shop façades on Main Street, tidy Victorian houses interrupted by structures from original settlers that had fallen into disrepair—a living ghost town. At its height, the Lebanon Silver Mine brought a sweep of 2,000 miners and residents when it was first bored in the 1870s. In turn, the fortune of Silver Plume and its people fluctuated with the price of silver. As ore mining dwindled, the population mirrored its decline—in the 1960s, there were only 82 remaining residents. Today, about 150 people reside in the quaint town in the Clear Creek valley. In less than two months, the bar came together. The timing was poor—I was away for most of the little fixes at a graduate program in Vermont, and I missed some of the essential drawing together of things that would make it what it was. From across the country, I watched as it became a real thing. Almost overnight, we became bar owners, but more than that, keepers of a slice of time warp, deeply invested in the space and the town it exists in. It was, and is, an intimidating responsibility: to become part of the backstory, and to protect the natural character of a place we were wary of disturbing. We (I should say Rob) rebuilt the porch; Steve gutted and fixed up our tiny bathroom, while Casey figured out a way to make more room for guests. I toiled over a wallpaper choice that could subtly replace the antique flowered paper that had been up for decades. We worried over small changes, wondering if it would make the place feel overproduced. Amazingly, it still feels the same as it did when we first stepped in, long before it was ours.

Now Open

(CON TI N U ED)

Now it’s open and I see the sense of refuge it brings to people, and also, the unadulterated delight. It’s a return to something that they, like me, thought was long gone. In late July, we opened to the public, and we watch people discover it every weekend. A piece of history alive and breathing. Many people will continue to pass exit 226, but we find that more people come out of curiosity, for the cocktails and for the company. It’s a feeling, more than anything—something you have to experience for yourself. Bread Bar is open on Fridays from 4–10 p.m. and Saturdays from 2–10 p.m.; you can follow them on Facebook and on Instagram, @breadbarsp.

SO YOU WANT TO SKI OUT-OFBOUNDS, EH? 7 initial steps aspiring backcountry skiers can take to start earning turns. ARTICLE JESSI HACKETT PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER HUANG

I

n Colorado, much of today’s ski culture has an emphasis on backcountry or big mountain exploration. While inspiring, the prospect of

setting out on exploratory ski missions in the middle of nowhere when avalanche deaths seem to be at an all-time high can seem uninviting and overwhelming. Where the heck do you even begin? Here are seven suggestions to follow if you’re serious about transitioning from resort junkie into someone who knows how to safely navigate and survive skiing or riding beyond mediated terrain.

OUT-OF-BOUNDS (CON TI N U ED)

03 TAKE AN AVALANCHE 1 COURSE.

Drop the money and get educated. Courses are generally a few days in length and cover the basics in reading terrain and snowpack, utilizing gear and assessing risk. Most courses include time “in the field,” and this is the perfect time to rent or borrow gear to practice using it properly. If you’re a student, look to see if your rec center or other clubs on campus offer courses at a discount. 04 FOLLOW THE LEADERS.

Mentors matter. If you know someone who has been skiing out of bounds for a while now, ask them if they are willing to take you out skiing on some mellow terrain after you’ve taken your Avalanche 1 Course. Offer to drive or buy them an après meal. If you can’t coordinate a time to go exploring, invite him or her out for a drink and pick their brain. Ask them about how they got into backcountry skiing or about the lessons they’ve learned in the field over time. 05 GET YOUR CARDIO UP TO SPEED.

Skiing in the backcountry doesn’t just consist of steep turns and face-shots; a lot of time is spent hiking. The popular phrase “earn your turns” isn’t just talk, it takes work ascending the mountains you plan on skiing down. Start getting your heart rate up in your daily life so that laps in the backcountry can be less lung busting. 06 IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, DON’T LEAVE THE RESORT ENTIRELY.

Hiking legs are important, but skiing legs are what make it fun. The more you’re skiing, the better. Try to make it a point to get some resort laps in here or there throughout your season. It means you’re keeping your skiing legs in shape, and you’ll be more prepared to take aggressive turns in an ungroomed landscape. 07 FIGURE OUT WHERE TO EXPLORE.

Start talking to people and researching common places to ski or ride in your region. You may hear folks constantly talking about a certain trail or recreational area where they like to go touring. Study those places, the terrain traps associated with them and begin familiarizing yourself with that topography. Then, when the time is right, you’ll be ready to send it. 34

olorado is home to some of the best skiing in the world, and with that, accompanying breakfast joints, dinner spots and family friendly festivals. While there are lots of excel-

lent ski resorts and towns all across the state, you don’t need to go far from Denver to plan a weekend away or even just a day. As the winter approaches, we wanted to investigate three of the most accessible resorts from Denver: Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail. Here’s some insight as to where to eat, drink and play for kids—and grown-up kids—of all ages. CONTINUED >

VAIL Vail is an enormous resort and after a snow, its size allows for skiers to find fresh powder long past first chair. For those looking for a leisurely day of skiing or new to the sport, the resort offers some of the longest green and blue runs in the world, allowing everyone to explore the grandiosity of the mountain regardless of skill level. The town is pricier than some neighboring resorts, but for those looking for a luxurious ski vacation, Vail has it all. LAST CHAIR | DINNER

When in Vail ... dine in luxury. And when looking for fine dining, Matsuhisa is about as fine as it gets. While Chef Nobu Matsuhisa has

locations—Denver,

Aspen and Vail—this location is perhaps the most exquisite with outdoor fire pits, stone fireplaces and custom woodwork, not to mention breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains. The experience comes with a hefty price tag, but Matsuhisa’s new-style Japanese cuisine, influenced by his classical training as a chef in Tokyo and also from his time in Peru and Argentina, is unforgettable. THE BUNNY HILL | FUN FOR THE KIDS

One of the more-unique amenities Vail has to offer is their pint-sized snowmobile rentals, designed especially for kids! Available for kids 6–12 years old, your child can cruise around the Blizzard Speedway snowmobile track at whatever speed they desire. A great way to break up the ski week, these mini-snowmobiles are an outdoorsy kids’ dream. SHOPPING IN LEISURE & LUXURY

If Vail is known for anything aside from its skiing, it would be its shopping. With literally hundreds of shops at Vail’s base, you can find everything from jewelry to clothing boutiques, outdoor gear to kitschy souvenirs. From Arc’teryx, Helly Hansen and Patagonia to Bridge Street Jewelers and Artful Sol, Vail, again, has it all.

SET THE SOIREE ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY POPPIES + PAISLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

T

here’s always an excuse for a dinner party, especially this time of the year. Family gatherings. Friendsgiving.

Holiday parties. It's all about friends and family coming together to eat, drink and connect. Connection happens to be the perfect word to describe the purpose of a soiree, and it’s also a concept that’s meaningful to local event planner Dagny Morrow who helped Lifestyle design three out-of-the-ordinary table concepts. • Local is the New Black • Minimalist-Minded & • A Global Setting Morrow owns and operates Last Best Weddings with her partner in planning, Liz Meyers. The pair started their business with connection in mind. “We thrive on relationships and building connections with local business owners in our community,” says Morrow. Each table came together through collaboration with local businesses and artists, which resulted in three tablescapes to dine for.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE OUT OF THE THREE TABLE AESTHETICS?

"Local is the new black is our favorite table concept because it showcases so much of what we personally love. Supporting our local community, eating high-quality local food and sharing food and local businesses with our friends are what we love to do in our everyday lives. Colorado is the home of so many wonderfully creative humans, and we hope to work with them all someday. If we can continue to support them by implementing their craft into our events, that is the butter to our bread." WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR HOSTS LOOKING TO STYLE THEIR OWN UNIQUE TABLE?

Have fun with it. Go to a local market and find inspiration from the seasonal vegetables. Go to the local florist and find inspiration from the seasonal florals. Whatever it may be, look to your local community to find inspiration, and have a blast putting together a dinner party for your loved ones. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DECOR DETAIL WHEN IT COMES TO A DINNER PARTY?

The food. When it comes down to it, we LOVE food. CONTINUED >

“We met Karina when we unexpectedly found the house we fell in love with — and now own. At the time we did not have an agent so we worked with her as a transaction broker. We were so impressed with her we hired her to sell the home we owned at the time. We had a short time frame to sell and we were confident Karina would get the job done. And she did. It went under contract in 6 days. Her guidance on staging and pricing were key in this fast sale. Karina is a direct communicator who clearly understands her client’s needs. hen disaster strikes, our human instinct is to help, fix or give back. Sometimes that can seem overwhelming or nearly impossible,

especially when chaos is occurring thousands of miles from your own front door. But who said it has to be complicated? For co-owners of Hope Tank on Broadway, Erika Righter and Jade Baranski, they believe giving back can be done effectively, locally and simply. At Hope Tank, you will find “gifts that give back," items available for purchase that each benefit a specific charity or cause. For Righter and Baranski, it’s all about involving the community and equipping those interested with the right knowledge. For Righter, Hope Tank began as a passion project with a small shop on Santa Fe. It was a way to connect the community to impact in ways that are unique and simple. After about a year and a half, Righter had to decide whether to forge ahead full speed or stay small. Realizing the excitement around the project and a clear need, she was then willing to take the leap of faith. Later, the space on Broadway became available and Hope Tank was moved to its current location. “The Baker neighborhood felt really authentic,” Righter said. “It reflects the diversity we were going for. Broadway gets a wrap for being a hipster neighborhood but it has some of the nicest, warm and friendly business owners.” Baranski first came into Hope Tank as a customer and fell in love with the concept and heard the spiel from Righter. At the time, Baranski owned their own business but after buying things at the store, they were on board and ready to get involved. According to Righter, Hope Tank’s mission is to connect the community to their impact, which is accomplished by selling gifts that give back. Every product in the store has a sticker indicating which charity is benefitted through the purchase. The staff is educated about each different charity to assist customers while browsing.

(CON TI N U ED)

“We want everybody in on this,” Righter said. “We want to connect people to their heart and realize that they can do something in their community that matters . . that their impact can fuel their business or nonprofit and it reminds them why we are on this planet.”

Righter has noted a trend in some companies that claim to give back with the production of their goods but are actually greenwashing. While these organizations have wonderful intention, sometimes they aren’t achieving what they set out to do. So, Righter is vigilant about educating each consumer about these types of claims and ensures that Hope Tank has done their homework. “It is important to research how much of a positive impact [these organizations] actually have,” Righter explains. “Is the impact actually needed or wanted? Internationally—is the impact something that the country actually needs or wants? Is it creating opportunity?” Baranski and Righter are non-traditional business owners and the store is only one component of what they do. They work with 20 nonprofit organizations, support different campaigns quarterly, host events in the community and provide services through Impact Factor, including Swag For Good and Joy Lab, which allows the community to interact with their brand on different platforms.
