LIFESTYLE LETTER

Wellness and Wealth: A New Year of Possibilities I love a fresh start. I enjoy planning. I appreciate a good reinvention. So, this time of year is always one of my favorites! The New Year is nothing but a blank book of possibilities just waiting for your story to fill its pages. Luckily for us, we live in a community that values health and wellness, creativity and pursuing passions—the perfect place to start the New Year. This month, we embrace wellness in all its forms. We visit Dr. Callie Doyle's exquisite dental office in Ooltewah. Doyle Family Dentistry's spalike atmosphere comes from Dr. Doyle's understanding of her patient's anxieties and her mission is to make a trip to the dentist as enjoyable (and beautiful) as possible. Wealth adviser George Vieth presents five steps for securing your financial health in the New Year. Wellness certainly extends to your finances and his practical advice will put you on the right path. Dr. Tyler Prentice of Scenic City Orthodontics shares why building a positive culture with his team is just as important as the experience he provides to his patients. Consistently ranking high in employee satisfaction and retention, we take a look at what makes SCO such a special place to work. We catch up with Southern Soul Yoga owner Jenna Wright. Wright's inclusive approach to yoga and pilates creates space for people of all levels of fitness and from all backgrounds. Her extensive class offerings coupled with two locations (Northshore and St. Elmo) truly means there's a way for everyone to pursue their fitness journey with her and her uniquely qualified staff. No matter what your goals and resolutions are for 2023, I hope health and wealth follow you and your family into the New Year. I also hope you take time to pursue some of the passions you've been putting on the back burner. You never know what may happen in the New Year. After all, the possibilities are endless. towards dentistry. This concept of framing all aspects for the patient’s approval is at the core of all our systems and is the ‘why’ behind what we do.” Doyle Family Dentistry's primary focus is on partnering with patients. “We are deliberate in taking our time with our patients, not only to build a relationship with them, but also to understand what is going on in their lives as this will affect the oral environment and conditions of the teeth, gums, jaw muscles and jaw joints,” Dr. Doyle says. Through these connections and genuine relationships, patients become an integral part of their own dental journey. Doyle highlights, “When our patients leave, their predominant impression is that they have been visiting with an old friend and the dentistry that occurred during their stay was just a byproduct of their visit. We authentically care, we love what we do, and we genuinely love our patients.”

Upon entering Doyle Family Dentistry, you may think you have entered a spa. From the serene color palette to the impeccable decor, it is clear that everything in the practice was chosen purposefully. Aware of the trepidation many people feel about going to the dentist, Dr. Callie Doyle set out to change the narrative when she opened her practice a decade ago. “We wanted the atmosphere to be calming and soothing. The aromatherapy, the instrumental music, and the waterfall are present in the background to support a sense of mindfulness and help people feel comfortable and at ease.” Doyle’s intentional choices and eye for design permeate throughout the practice. Growing up, Doyle’s own dental journey highlighted the importance of the patient’s perspective. She stresses, “What the patient feels, what they perceive, what they understand, and what they experience make up the sum of their feelings

Five Steps for Financial Health Being financially healthy looks different for everyone and every life stage. But what almost everyone can agree on are the benefits of creating positive habits to improve the health of your finances over the long term. Before you can get to these five steps, you need to have a clear picture of your Vision, Values, and Goals. Vision can be a misapplied word, as not all of us are motivated by what we see. It could be what you hear or what you feel. It is more of a sense of knowing where you want to end up. Your values are the rules you will

use to reach your vision. Knowing what you are willing to do to have what you want is very important. The next step is to establish three, five, and ten-year goals. Make sure each goal is important, specific, obtainable, and you have the resources to pursue it. After you have completed this work, evaluate your progress every year to see if you are on track or need to make some changes. This is the starting point where financial advisors will begin. Next are the five steps to figure out your “how.”

EVALUATE YOUR EXPENSES: You may have a general idea of what your regular expenses are, but it’s a good idea to look at your bank statements to get a better picture of exactly how much money you spend. Having accurate numbers of what you spend can help you identify areas where you could be spending too much and can afford to cut back. For example, you know approximately how much you spend eating out for one meal, but do you know how much that adds up to over a month? Put your actual expenses into focus. INCREASE YOUR NET INCOME: Everyone wants to make more money, but unfortunately, that’s not something you have a lot of control over. Increasing your net income isn’t only about earning more–it’s also about spending less. After you take a good look into your finances, find areas where you can cut back. There may be some areas of your finances where you’re spending money unnecessarily. Instead, use these funds for more practical purposes like paying off debt, creating an emergency fund, or saving for retirement.

unexpected, whether that’s a repair, a bill or a loss of income. Creating a buffer is about having some wiggle room within your finances. An easy way to start saving is to set up automatic transfers. Most financial institutions can help you set up internal transfers so your money moves from your checking to your savings account without you having to think about it. START SAVING FOR THE FUTURE: The hardest part about saving for retirement is getting started. There are more exciting ways to use your money than putting it into an account and not spending it for 30 years. But starting to save now will better serve you in the future. Putting money towards your retirement is about focusing on the future and your long-term financial goals. So, put your freed-up funds to good use and start investing for retirement.

Improving your

financial health

Improving your financial health isn’t a process that happens overnight. It’s a journey that will take time but will be worth it. PAY OFF DEBT: Paying off your debt can have a significant impact on the health of your finances. Of course, having debt is often unavoidable, but the kind of debt that overwhelms your life is not financially healthy. Reducing your debt will only serve you in the long run. Use methods like the snowball or avalanche method to get your debt under control. Once you’re no longer paying the principal and interest on your debt, you’ll have room to do with your money what you want. CREATE A FINANCIAL BUFFER: A financial buffer can come in the form of a designated emergency fund or adding to your existing savings account. What matters is that you have funds for the

Southern Soul Yoga’s Focus on Building Strength Through Community ARTICLE BY EVE ROBLES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRITTANY BURRIS

H OT SP OT | HEALTH + WELLNE S S

The practice of yoga dates back over five thousand years. For millennia, practitioners have engaged in this meditative exercise seeking strength, flexibility, peace, and focus. Southern Soul Yoga owner, Jenna Wright, is passionate about helping others gain physical and mental strength through the connection of mind and body within a supportive community. When asked what sets her studios apart from others, Jenna gave us one defining word: community. At Southern Soul Yoga, mind, body and community are one. Wright tells us, “It is extremely important to me to create a place where people can come and unify on similarities and be open to discuss differences. A place where all walks of life come together in a space to be seen, share in that time, and bond in a way they may not have otherwise.”

When Jenna began her journey with yoga, she experienced benefits that were not just physical, but mental as well. It became so transformative for her that she wanted to help others benefit from it in the same way. Wright says, “For me it is about the strength of the practice. I am a power teacher, but my focus is not on how hard I can make the practice. It is about getting out of your head and into your body. The more strength you build physically, the more mental strength you build. Then, you are able to really sit in stillness.” It is this combination of physical and mental strength tethered with diversity that is embedded into the culture at Southern Soul. Southern Soul goes beyond the offerings of typical yoga studios. From an array of heated and non-heated

yoga experiences, to Pilates and other strength building classes, Jenna stresses that she doesn’t put any perimeters around the traditions of yoga. For her, it is important that practitioners have the ability to be themselves and make their classes their own. There is a sense of distinction in every aspect of the experience as each type of class has its own focus and tempo. Wright says, “We use authentic music and allow the teachers to play whatever feels authentic to them, their age, or their heritage.” With locations on the North Shore and in St. Elmo, Southern Soul Yoga provides an array of classes to suit the most advanced yogi and the novice student. Exceeding Expectations SCENIC CITY ORTHODONTICS' CULTURE FOR CHANGING SMILES

Since 2010, Scenic City Orthodontics has been changing lives by changing smiles. As the practice expands, the key ingredient to its success is a positive culture. Flooded with raving patient reviews, Scenic City Orthodontics boasts five-star ratings across all three of its locations. We spoke with Dr. Tyler Prentice about what it is that sets his practice apart from others in the area.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CULTURE AT SCENIC CITY ORTHODONTICS? Our thing is always exceeding expectations. Here, it is patients, people and smiles. It really is our team that does the incredible job. Every year, we continue to grow and it is the great people that are a part of the office that work together in the shared vision–a dedication to watching people smile.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO CULTIVATE A POSITIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES? Happy employees lead to happy patients and families. If we focus on our patients and they are happy, then that transforms them. Our patients and our team. That’s what it’s all about.

WHEN YOU STARTED SCENIC CITY ORTHODONTICS, WHAT WAS YOUR APPROACH TO MAINTAINING A POSITIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT? We invest continually into each other and the team. We are always learning and growing together. In the office, culture is the most powerful thing to have in order to maintain success. And of course, the Golden Rule still applies, if you focus on taking great care of people, the rest works out. It really is as simple as that.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WAYS YOU PROMOTE A POSITIVE CULTURE? Culture isn’t something you do once a year. It is something you do every day. You need to maintain focus on that so you don’t lose it. We start the day with fun “Minute to Win It” games because it is hard to transition from personal life to work. So, we review anything of interest to get our mind right for the day in order to be ready for our patients and families. We have Culture Court, our internal praise messaging system, which crowns a monthly and yearly Culture King or Queen as voted by their peers. We also connect outside of the office. The team is the successful piece to the positive culture here. We take care of people on their way in and out. Everything is a part of the experience.

AS THE PRACTICE GROWS, HOW DO YOU ENSURE YOU CONTINUE TO BUILD AND PRIORITIZE CULTURE? We set ourselves apart by providing personal experiences and individual care. We don’t have a lot of big changes—patients see the same familiar faces every time. The quality of the people and the systems already established maintain it. We manage through the same doctrines to maintain the same high-level quality. In turn, people are invested in the long term, rather than the short. The Transformative Power of Self-Care

Center MedSpa Serves Clients at Every Stage of their Beauty & Wellness Journeys 26

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

Center MedSpa opened its doors in 2008 with Therese Parker taking the helm in 2021. We spoke with Bonnie Kaddoura, the Spa’s director, about Center MedSpa and what makes it a unique destination for self-care in Chattanooga. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Therese Parker has always held a deep love for the Southern city’s beauty and growth. Her passion for helping others become their happiest, most confident selves led her back to school to acquire her aesthetics license, and she started her dream career at Center MedSpa. In October 2021, Therese was given the opportunity of a lifetime to purchase the spa she called home. From massages and body treatments to hand or foot care and a plethora of result-driven non-invasive skin treatments, Therese and her team work tirelessly to maintain a welcoming, restorative environment. Within Center MedSpa’s walls, all are welcome to experience the transformative power of self-care.

In an industry focused on selling treatments, Kaddoura notes, Center MedSpa believes in listening to clients and curating experiences to enhance their self-care journey. Center MedSpa brings transformative clinical treatments, a restorative spa experience, and prestige retail together under one roof to serve the local community at every stage of their beauty and wellness journeys. Center MedSpa offers a wide range of sought-after services including: Moxi, BBL, and the Center MedSpa Signature Facial or Pedicure. The sole facial, for the feet, is a sought-after service that no other medical spa in Chattanooga offers. Potential clients who need guidance about how to get started are encouraged to book a free consultation where one of the spa’s expert therapists will meet with you and go over your concerns and create a customized plan based on budget, goals, and downtime.

When asked for any final thoughts or comments about Center MedSpa, Kaddoura stated, “There is no “one size fits all” approach to beauty and wellness, but with the right expertise and guidance, becoming your most beautiful self can be easy. Center MedSpa goes beyond skin deep to listen to our clients and deliver personalized service to meet their needs and goals. Whether you join us once for a spa day or visit regularly for treatments, our staff is committed to providing an experience so good, you can’t help but tell your friends.” Center MedSpa goes beyond skin deep to listen to our clients and deliver personalized service to meet their needs.
