Home for the Holidays Congratulations! If you are reading this, you have made it to the last month of the year. December has always been a month of celebration in my eyes—a time to celebrate loved ones, family, friends, and accomplishments from the past 12 months. If you are able to be home for the holidays, we hope you are cherishing every moment of it. If you are not able to make it home for the holidays, we hope you can cherish loved ones from afar and still create that sense of “home” wherever you are. This month, we highlight Riverside Bed & Breakfast, a stunning escape located in Soddy Daisy that is the perfect getaway for a staycation or for visiting family members this holiday season. We catch up with Tess Taibo, owner of Torte & Eat who is building a business model sure to bring joy to your loved ones. We take a look at the mission driving Oaks Coffee and provide you with a few of our favorite non-traditional gift ideas to celebrate the season. As you read this issue, I hope you are encouraged by our local community and that you feel the commitment our team has to every story we create and every partner we promote. Emerald Group Hosts Grand Opening Celebration Emerald Group, comprising Emerald Operating Partners (EOP) and Energy Transition Finance (ETF), will hold the official grand opening of its new office in Chattanooga on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at 1110 Market St., Suite 204. Officials said it "marks a pivotal step in the company's expansion strategy in the United States." Emerald Group, which is making Chattanooga its national headquarters, seeks to link clean energy projects with financing and business help.

Little Coyote Opens to the Public Offering a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere, Little Coyote, the third concept of husband-and-wife team Erik and Amanda Niel and newest addition to their long-standing Chattanooga locales (Easy Bistro & Bar and Main Street Meats) officially opened its doors to the public on Monday, Nov. 13. Te s s Ta i b o From a young age, Torte & Eat owner Tess Taibo developed a passion for creating elevated gourmet and fusion dishes using fresh ingredients. “I grew up in Napa, California, which is basically a food and beverage paradise,” shares Tess. “It exposed me to all kinds of great fresh flavors and inspired me to make lighter and fusion dishes.” Through the years, Tess honed her craft serving as a private chef, catering events, and making specialty cakes and desserts. “I started making gourmet items like small bites and meals for friends for special events,” she says. “That turned into very specialty kinds of gourmet appetizers, cocktail spreads, and desserts.” “The name Torte & Eat is inspired by the love I have for both savory bites as well sweet items like cakes and specialty desserts,” she adds. “I have the tagline on my site that food is worth overthinking because, to me, some of the most special dishes that surprise and delight people come from a thoughtful approach to food.” Currently, Tess creates customized, elegant Sip & Sweet boxes perfect for special occasions or as a simple thankyou gift. “I love to create interesting flavor combinations by adding a gourmet twist, say with botanicals, that elevate items to something more than what you can pick up at the store and then customizing those items specifically for people,” says Tess. “These boxes are a great way to do that. Oaks Coffee exists to initiate a positive change in local lives through a stand-alone cafe that serves the entire neighborhood. We curate specialty coffee, made-to-order food, and event planning to elevate the customer experience. This is done with one goal in mind; to generously give profits back to our community partners who strategically aid the betterment of Chattanooga. We focus our give-backs on the underprivileged; bringing hope to youth via education & mentorship, resources to the less fortunate, and rescue to those in need. A few of our partners include Bethel Bible Village, YCAP, Habitat for Humanity, the Rescue Mission, and Love’s Arm Outreach. Like a social enterprise, potential supporters have the opportunity to become an Oaks Champion. We steward their financial support to refine, improve, and extend our existing cafe/organization: that way we can continue giving our best to the community. Champions may choose to support internal projects at the cafe (ex. storage facility, walk-in cooler, or a coffee roaster) or give towards a general philanthropy fund to be used quarterly as needs arise with our partners. Champions also receive an annual newsletter to keep them up to date with the fruits of their giving; all donations are tax-deductible. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-ofthe-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour. the snacks Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation. WHAT YOU NEED • Cheese board or serving plate • Assortment of cheeses We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Demonstrated by Spaniards as well, this tradition involves eating 12 grapes with every strike of the clock, symbolizing good luck for every month of the new year. + DENMARK Destroy your frustrations and start the year fresh by smashing unwanted glassware. Danish tradition calls for smashing plates on the doors of friends and loved ones around midnight, but we think you should probably save that part for when you’re actually in Denmark. + SCOTLAND Although its singing has become pretty standard worldwide, “Auld Lang Syne” originated in Scotland in 1788 as a poem by Robert Burns. Go ahead and make a cheat sheet for all your friends—we won’t judge.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
